Indie developers are nice, the anti piracy screen for just shapes and beats is just one of the developers talking to you and telling you how you can support them without buying the games they make
yeah that one's pretty cool. also kinda shows how some people don't quite seem to get piracy, i guess. even if you can't pay for it before playing, knowing a game is good and being able to spread the word after playing it and experiencing it yourself, then buying it when you can afford it, still ends up better than following all the "don't pirate indie games" stuff and not playing it at all. obviously, the "buying when you can" part is important, but for smaller games, word-of-mouth has value too. as long as that is kept in mind, and people do pay afterwards, i don't quite see the issue with the matter. maybe people are too used to thinking that a copy of digital data has inherent value? the value is in the experience and the developer should definitely be paid at some point in the process, whether before or after
But I wouldn't go extreme on this opinion either because over the years I've definitely seen some evil indie game developers. Here's some quick life advice: Just because somebody is a scrappy underdog doesn't mean they're a good guy. Tl; DR indie developers aren't always peaceful, sometimes they're just harmless
Minor correction. Bungie was acquired BEFORE Halo was finished. The investment from MS was what actually enabled the game to become what it did. The OST for the first game actually came with a mini documentary that went over this development and the crap the game looked like before Bungie was acquired.
Moral: You can love but don't worship. These companies are not your Gods and blindly kissing their feet solves nothing. Take it from Patrick Star himself: "Hero worship is unhealthy."
Nintendo: has fans Nintendo fans: Are so passionate that they spend a decade of their lives making a tribute game without expecting anything in return. Nintendo: Is that fucking competition I smelled?
Well NOW maybe it would be competition. As in people playing the free game over the title 😂 People returned their copies of SV. Long time fans. To bad that won't change anything because it's the highest selling because of the access and normalization of technology in every home. Possibly a Switch and smartphone in everyone's hand starting at school age kids. They have officially hit their next generation of *MAJOR* players I believe. If Nintendo fans get to play a Pokemon game with actual effort in the development they might demand the same from Nintendo and that's a big no-no for the yearly shovelware that it has become

I dare you to compare how stable the download from their server is, compared to other launchers and stores. And those other functions that Epic lacs are important. There is a reason why Steam is successful and them being monopoly on PC is mostly because of how inadequate the competition was, not because of their monopolistic behavior. I would just blame other platforms for being shit.
This is true and heartbreaking. I’m a big Pokémon fan and the only way for them to to not be like that is to not support their games. But it’s makes it unfair. We shouldn’t have to choose to not spend money on their games to give us games worth buying.
@@Linkman8912 no. Nintendo is very strict on their pirated games. I see what you’re saying but I want to support the devs. Game freak is a great and passionate company. Just forced to meet punctual releases and meet a quota for money. Especially since pokemon is one of their biggest money makers. It isn’t fair to game freak that Nintendo has a different agenda. Though the company itself has its downfalls too. The reason why game freak has a serious down trend in quality is because they refuse to hire a larger team and are still required to meet the time crunches. They feel that a bigger team makes the number of people passionate about the games much less than what they have. Which makes sense but is contributing to the loss of great games.
And now they're using patents as an excuse to kill their competition and the hopes of future creatives, which, more than anything else, is utterly inexcusable and wicked

If you can avoid all things gaming for about 6 months to a year, you can finally "return", and by "return" I mean enough current(current to today) games will have dropped in price, they'll have faded from public light, and you can go get games for a fraction of the cost, and you'll be totally unaware of all the flaws of the game and it's release. Staying current on gaming is just torturing yourself. The gaming community will always be permanently depressed and enraged because they're indulging in an industry that abuses them. There was a meme circulating around the internet back in the days during the Pokemon Uranium incident. A child prodigy from Africa or something successfully created a device using woods and tools to be capable to run Super Mario Bros. As a sign of congratulations. Nintendo's staff fly over there and told the kid that they either destroy this new competition or the kid will be sued for 1 million USD. Or something like that. I may hate it if Blizzard and EA became the norm. But I fear the day when Nintendo's practices became the norm.
The overall sentiment I've heard over the years of people who hate getting treated like shit by these companies but buy their stuff anyway is essentially they would rather continue to buy and play the games because it's easier that way. I've almost given up trying to bother anymore.
Yep, it’s so annoying. Nothing will change until people stop supporting disgusting behaviors. I agree wholeheartedly, but I think it's important to separate Dev teams from the company overall. Not completely, they are still part of the company, but the Dev teams are where any genuine care for the players might come from. Do I trust Nintendo? Not really. Do I trust Eiji Aunoma? Yeah, probably.

Its quite sad how the majority of people are blind to the fact that Nintendo is a super shitty company. Just because they've made great games they're willing to turn their blind eye to it. Yet people make videos like "Riot did what Blizzard couldn't". Like stfu. They both soiled their sheets and Riot just happened to change them faster and now people are blinded by the brand spanking new clean white sheets.
Yeah but honestly Riot has always been way more user-friendly than most companies. They don't even fit in the Greed section, since they never force you to buy anything and everything gameplay-related in their games is free. They usually listen to feedback from the players and almost never fail on their games, even though they release 1 every 10 years. I don't think Riot should be considered anywhere near the other companies

The diamond and pearl remakes on switch sucked complete ass, the only time where split screen was even used at all was in the Underground and the execution was absolutely horrendous
I think company social media profiles certainly aren't helping this. Lots of people have already developed parasocial relationships with celebrities and internet personalities and are doing it with companies, too. Giving them these personas that make people antiquate them with Indie developers so they can do no wrong, no matter their business practises or behaviour.
I'm absolutely appalled that people are still buying EA's products even though there are ALWAYS massive backlash in every single new game they released in the past decade. People just didn't learn.
It's equal parts addiction and apathy. On-top of being greedy, companies like EA are also predatory. They squeeze the weak until they're empty, then toss their withered husk on the pile.
The problem is that in this world, its not only gaming companies doing it, this car manifactures, gadget companies, phone companies, condom companies, they all do it its a much much bigger problem
This video is surprisingly well made. Can't believe it took me so long to find it. Watched all the way through without skipping, and can jut say this is amazing.
I do find this very informative. As a Nintendo fan, myself. The description fits them perfectly. With a MASSIVE fan follow cultivated throughout the decade, such a love-hated relationship is rather mind boggling to say the least. Even worse when you're an artist and a fan. The whole copyright infringement thing is enough to scare you silly. And is kinda sad when you think about it.
Brand loyalty sucks and it's definitely true that a lot of people don't recognize it. However, Valve does have the best launcher/marketplace by far. And they are usually consumer-friendly. They are also a relatively small company and although they haven't released that many games recently, what they have done is pretty crazy, such as all their contributions to VR and the Steam Deck (which basically started a new market by itself).
@@coupon7639 define small then. Small compared to ConcernedApe (Stardew Valley)? No, Valve is huge. Compared to Blizzard? Blizzard has 10 times as many employees as Valve. Hell, even Epic games fired ~850 people in the end of 2023, which is nearly double the employees that Valve even have in total.
The research done by the guy is okay, but not good in regards to Valve, which I know, because I follow what they do since more than a decade, it's a shame really, because he gets crucial things wrong, which makes me question all the stuff that he said about the other companies as well... For example, he claims Valve reacted to the EGS by lowering their revenue cut, which is just plain wrong. Valve lowered the cut before the EGS was even announced. They did it after multiple game developers came out and complained about it, causing a lot of headlines. Hell, I wouldn't even be surprised if those complaints and headlines were the reason Epic Games decided to launch the EGS. With the amount of features and polish it had (or rather has), it could very well be the case. Also I find it a little ingenuine to say that they don't make games. If you play Dota 2 or CSGO/CS2, you know that the amount of content and changes they made to those 2 games alone in the last 10 years is pretty damn huge. With the amount of work they put into that, they could have released at least 5 other games.
To be fair, most of the Seven Deadly Sins kind of collapse in on themselves, anway. Envy, Lust, Greed, Gluttony are all similar behaviors, just nuanced. Pride, Wrath, Sloth usually have the same motivation.
@@planescaped I think the only one that might not completely apply is Gluttony, since I don't know of any smaller companies they bought out to kill off (though they threatened to cancel Fire Emblem series prior to Awakening due to declining sales. (FE is made by Intelligent Systems who are 2nd party devs to them). Now its become a fan service dumping ground with anime tropes and lacks the unique style it had before, but that's just an example. As for every other sin though, anything goes. Greed: Charging an extortion with no price drops on old games as re releases or remasters. Sloth: Releasing and/or rushing out unfinished glitchy pokemon games (though this is partly the fault of Game Freak as well). Even hardware is getting sloppier, such as the cases of switch joy cons drifting and 3DS being less durable to wear and tear than older consoles etc. The emulation of retro titles is also lazy and shows no interest in preservation or doing their old work justice, and ties back to the greed point with them charging a lot a month extra just to play N64 games, but worse than they were on Wii U (Plus the button mapping is deliberately gimped to force people to buy another overpriced controller. Lust: Not sure how Nintendo treat their own devs and staff as the Lust title in this video was based on such a case, but as others have mentioned, the actual devs at Nintendo seem like decent people, strained by the higher ups to meet deadlines and Nintendo's bottom line. Envy: Although Nintendo being protective of copyright is nothing new, they used to take more risks and be more experimental, particularly back when Hiroshi Yamauchi and Satora Iwata were the CEOs, back when they were split into R&D divisions and EAD, then SPD and EAD, but since they merged them into EPD, and since the Switch came out and made its own space in the console market as a home console/portable hybrid, they've become more complacent and relied more on the recognition of IPs and re releasing games than ever. There are exceptions of course, but they seem willing to resort to the same habits as other companies and compromise what made them so cutting edge in the first place for more profit. Wrath: Basically all the DMCA/copyright stuff, from taking down Pokemon Uranium, AM2R, the Smash tournaments, youtube monetization, taking down music/OST channels etc, when its all basically harmless free advertising for them that should have no bearing on what new things they release. Of course I'm not acting like any of it is malice, just based each deadly sin on something the big N has done in bad faith not caring about consumers, not just because their consumers "care" so much but because its morally questionable exploitation of goodwill. They are notorious though because of their reputation for revolutionizing the industry and still standing strong with followers who defend them to this day. Juist thought it'd be interesting to analyse.
The way this video is structured is amazing. Playing the game of "Guess the Sin" is so fun whenever a new section pops up. And when you said "You already know the final, deadly sin of them all" you were so right! Guessing the answer correctly made me feel so satisfied. Also, the structure of this video makes the complex world of video game companies make sense when you look at it from this perspective. You can clearly see the sins they possess.
Another reason to hate game companies is that sometimes they’ll use game developers, passion for making games as an excuse to make them work crunch hours, and pay them less. They’ll also use developers as a shield to block criticism for decisions that they made and forced onto the developers. Remember that game developers are just trying to do their job. If we want real change in the game industry then we need to start blaming game companies that are making these bad decisions. (Besides Indie games but that’s a different story)
valve is the only company which cares about linux gamers though, they developed the proton compatibility layer which allows linux users to play almost any windows game.
The steam deck will also vastly increase the number of compatible games, which is great considering how most other publishers don`t care about linux at all.
Also hate the exclusivity deals that epic has been signing up , I get that there needs to be done competition for steam but it's anti consumer to have to put your game on one specific store
@@tudytudy3316 That's true, but they also offer more services than "hosting the games", the problem is that Valve doesn't even give a small discount to indie developers or at least a negotiable cut, which is a big greedy move.

No, Nintendo did NOT save the gaming industry from the 1983 crash. For a start the crash only affected north America, it didn't touch the home micro based European games industry. Secondly it didn't save the NA industry, it restarted it.
Ubisoft would actually fit nicely to "envy" role - imitating others and trying to have the same type of games as others, failing constantly with their copycats

Amazingly depressing video, but incredibly written nonetheless. This is an amazing essay overall and I'm amazed at the care you put into it, and how tragically true it all is...
was watching this casually when I saw my face at 6:49 lol. I was a 3d artist at blizz for 10 years and the few talks I have online are about art so it feels very random to see a clip of a video of me being used to illustrate a person I don't even know (even if it says "not kevin Meier" for half a second) or on a topic I personally never experienced.
So I'm not sure I agree with the steam section. Steam gained and continues to gain popularity because compared to other launchers, Steam and Valve actually brings value to the games on the platform. No other launcher has as much of a focus on features for the users. For instance, Steam's controller support is second to none. Most of them lack forums for support. Some devs that went Epic exclusive have told their customers that if they want controller support, that they should add the game to Steam as a non-steam game. Other devs use Steam's forums in place of official ones, even when they aren't even selling their game on Steam. No other launcher has put as much effort to making their games playable on Linux. On the contrary, some such as Epic have made efforts in the past to specifically block their launcher or their games from working on Linux through Proton. I get why you brought up their refund policy, but the fact of the matter remains is that even now the default of most gaming stores is to NOT allow refunds. Before Steam did so, the only store that did was Origin. Epic when they started initially did not allow refunds, and when they did start doing so, many had problems actually getting the refund to go through. And it's still a weekly occurrence where somebody will try to get support for something that happened with their account only to be told by the epic subreddit mods that their subreddit isn't for support (because those posts make them look bad) which leads to them taking it elsewhere. So it's pretty common knowledge that even now EGS is not worth using. People log into the site to claim the free games, but never install them, instead often choosing to just buy them on Steam. You also bring up the 30%, and act as if Valve does nothing and just holds it over the devs heads. But that argument is BS. Valve charges very little to be on their store and devs make it back basically immediately. Which basically means that after that little bit of money, all that matters is that for every copy of the game sold directly on Steam, the dev gets paid and Valve gets paid at the same time. Valve has incentive to ensure that people buy from Steam, because if users aren't buying from steam, then Valve doesn't get paid either. So over the years Valve has worked to make their platform actually worth using. In comparison, many of the competitors have far more money than Valve and yet they can't seem to come up with a halfway decent launcher. Because to them, there is no point in competing on quality. Epic has outright stated as much themselves btw. Rather than draw in users organically, they prefer shortcuts. By offering publishers deals and consumers free games, they hope to build a userbase that is less likely to consider Steam. Problem is that this growth is inorganic and not stable. Most people who have an EGS account only have it to claim the free games, but they never download or play them, and when they do, they buy it on steam or pirate it. Very few people actually buy games on EGS compared to the users who just claim the free games, and people have chosen not to buy specifically because they think Epic might offer it for free. Epic built an audience of players that do not pay for things. Inorganic growth falls apart over time. The second Epic ends the free giveaways they will lose most of their userbase, because those people were in it for the free games and the experience with EGS is worse than piracy, so anybody actually wanting to play those games will either pirate the game or buy on Steam or elsewhere. And over the years EGS has been described as a marketing black hole. Games go onto EGS to die. Other launchers have similar issue because using them is such a drag that many would prefer to pretend they don't exist. Like I've got an EA account and a Ubisoft account, but I don't use their launchers because I've had frequent bad experiences with them and would rather not play a game at all than be forced to use them. So as a consumer, I can confidently say that those other launchers didn't earn their cut. In fact it is always the customer that decides this, the money ultimately comes from them. Steam sales dwarf the other stores, it must be doing something to draw in most customers, Devs that go exclusive on EGS for the bribe still tend to use Steam for their forums and advertisement. That right there proves that developers see value in being on steam. They just want to use Steam's services to drive people to the store that supposedly offers them a better deal, but because EGS is such a marketing black hole, they know full well that it's actually Epic that isn't earning their cut. Furthermore, devs can generate keys and sell them on third party sites. And Valve takes 0 cut of the revenue in that instance. If I buy a game on said third party site, they get a bigger cut and we both still enjoy the benefits of steam. Valve further rewards devs who sell a lot on steam by offering them a higher and higher cut. So whether they sell a lot of copies on Steam or some third party site, they tend to take away more than the 70%. Valve also eats a lot of the costs that a dev might see if they sold directly to consumers. For instance, chargebacks have devastated some indie developers. People buy their game using stolen credit cards and sell on grey market sites, then the owner of the card notices and does a chargeback, which penalizes the dev. If a dev sells on Steam or some other third party store, that store will usually eat the cost of the chargeback. Steam also offers consumers steam gift cards. You buy a 20 dollar card and it will cost 20 dollars for you. But it actually costs money to print and sell these. Valve eats the cost of these cards, and the money comes from the they take, not the developer's cut. When asked when EGS would offer gift cards, Tim Sweeney outright said the cost to provide them would outweigh their own cut. As such, they don't offer gift cards. Valve offers developers storage, bandwidth, they eat the processing cost for payment. They offer cloud saves, online matchmaking, they work on proton support, controller support for other controllers, they handle regional price recommendations (but allow devs to choose their prices), they sell in many many markets that a smaller developer might not be able to handle. So ultimately the 30% argument holds no actual weight. Everybody wants the best value for the least money. So I don't blame developers for wanting a better deal, but as a consumer I also want the best value for my money. I could choose to pirate everything, or buy from grey market sites, use a VPN and abuse regional pricing, buy physically on console used, but instead I choose to buy on steam/itch/gog and certain reputable third party sites, and I've always advocated against buying from grey market sites especially due to them harming indie devs in particular. I've been a PC gamer for a little over 10 years and in that time I watched Steam grow it's userbase organically. Valve isn't perfect, their handling of content on their platform is inconsistent at best, but compared to other platforms that languished in the same time period they still come out looking quite a bit better. Not only do they treat their userbase quite well, but they also treat their workers well too. Whereas Epic is well known for supporting crunch development culture. Valve also hasn't handled their IPs the best way, but everything Epic touches has turned to shit. Fall Guys is practically dead, Rocket League a shell of it's former self. There are games on EGS that didn't even last half a year. The only modicrum of success they have had in actually penetrating the PC market is by pushing EOS for games sold on steam and that usually comes with the issue that games that have worked fine for years suddenly stop working, sometimes outright requiring an epic account to even launch. In fact that's basically how all of their competitors work now and have worked for years. If they can't get you to buy their games on their own launcher, they will force you to use their launcher in addition to Steam to play the game. Each one tries to force growth, but that growth falls apart because at the end of the day, nobody actually likes those launchers and more and more end up pissed enough that they eventually just choose not to play those games than use that launcher.
I would like to second the point made about EGS giving out free games, Slime Rancher, I bought it on Steam because of how simple it is to run it on Linux, it supports it natively, unlike on the EGS.
also. the revenue split. isnt even our problem to be frank. sure call me mean. at the end of the day. the developers. are trying to sell me a product. this isnt red cross nurses asking for donations to save kids from dysentary. I also have a job. I work hard at my job. I dont see myself as morally obligated to just buy a game on a "more fair" platform against my own prefrence or convinence. what if the platform. has a shit refund policy and I dont like the game. oh well. guess I "did my part" to support developers. developers are not more valuable than I am. we both work at a job. I have my money. I will decide to do what I want with my hard earned money. I'm not the rich greedy billionaire refusing to lower prices by 1 penny to save 50 million lives here. I work a full work week. I'll buy what I want. and devs can sell where they want. Im not required to go scour non steam stores to find games and probably make the experience worse for myself. this goes triple because Im a linux gamer. and valve/proton makes it literally click and play versus setting up a game in lutris. which is not just click install and play the game.
@@nexus3756 Yeah I never bought the revenue split argument. Devs argued that Steam didn't earn it's fair share, but the consumer is actually decides that. The consumers are the ones that are actually spending money for the product, while devs reap a percentage of it based on the revenue split they agreed with at that store. Whether a game does well or not, since it is a split, the dev makes what they earned and the store makes what they earned. If we want to get into whether the store actually "earned" their money, then we would look at sales on each. Since games tend to sell way more on steam, it is easily arguable that Valve indeed earned their share. Meanwhile, EGS has often been described as a marketing black hole. It's a place where games go to be forgotten. So I would say Epic has not really earned their value. Some greedy publishers and devs seethe because they think that if people are buying the game on Steam, those people should instead buy it on a platform where the dev makes more. But to the consumer, those platforms don't offer as much to the user. Epic offers way less value to the consumer than Steam does and the price is the same. Devs aren't entitled to more money just because EGS offers a better split. If they want people to buy on EGS instead of Steam, they need to pressure EGS to actually improve and compete with Steam, but this will likely necessitate increasing Epic's revenue share. There's also the moral tax that comes with buying on Epic, which is that a good chunk of your money goes to Tencent/CCP and even more goes to Tim Sweeney. This is of course subjective, but I can't see myself ever supporting EGS as long as Epic is involved in it. It's been 5 years since EGS started and not only are they still competing with the Steam of 2003, they have done nothing for the pc community outside of trying (and failing) to monetize freeloaders. Whereas Steam, while not without flaws, comes across as a much better company for consumers, it's workers, and the industry in general. That alone pushes many people to prefer Steam even over cheaper stores.
@@deadchanel1298 Same I respect the developers who spend night and day making a product but not the companies who only care about whats in your pocket.
I used to work 50-60 hours a week, every week, when I worked at Papa John's. I don't know if its better or worse than being a dev for Rockstar, but working those long hours for months on end made me...incredibly depressed.
Envy made you depressed, not working 60-hour weeks. It’s that or your diet, the culture, pharmaceuticals, a combination of things, etc., but it’s not caused by working long hours. Humans absolutely were built to work that much, and feeding people is a great cause.
I have to take issue with your PoV on Valve here. Do you have any idea the cost of hosting and maintaining an estimated 9.2 Petabyte library of games and the running costs of serving that up, dupilcated across 20 different locations worldwide, with each one paying the ludicrus costs of getting direct access to the core backbones of the worldwide web in each area? CDNs are hilariously expensive to operate, that's why services like Amazon's AWS3 are so wildly successful, Valve and Amazon are making industry leading internet service features available to indie developers. Until EGS, Valve took the lowest total cut of any company for game distribution (this is why D2D and Gamespy died, developers found Steam and lost interest in publishing elsewhere), and not only doesn't charge an update fee (unlike Epic) but also provides update packaging tools and version control for both users and developers (Yes, you can downgrade your games on-demand with just a single string in Steam's console, assuming the developer allows it).
Yeah... I have to agree with the part about them stopping making new big games, but a 30% cut is an industry standard that Apple does too, and there's a lot of underappreciated work and money that goes into server stuff, moderation to keep malware off the platform and things like that.
I'm partially surprised Epic Games wasn't in here for sniping games already scheduled to go to Steam and making them EGS exclusives and not fulfilling promises to improve their store

While being on topic for the video, i feel like any kind of possibility for developers to change is direct competition, which, epic games seems to want to do it, while burning out their developers.
I don't know about the steam section. They have a lot of modding, networking and forum infrastructure that is actually really well executed. Does it warrant a 30% cut. Aw hell naw. But it's unfair to not mention how monumental that work is and how much it helps developers
I think it's quite fair for most games released recently on Steam. I don't think hosting a couple gigs of nsfw puzlles that a hundred people will buy is even profitable with 30% cut. On the other hand big companies must have exclusive contracts with Valve, no way company with game with 100 mil in sales would willingly give Valve 30 mil.
Yea the 30% cut i dont thing can be 100% justified. But along with the things you mentioned the number one goal for steam is probably trying to get many customer on board with their platform as much as possible since they are pretty much a game publisher now. And in that area they have be working pretty hard as well. They developed the steam link to try to allow players to play games from their couch. Which a lot of console gamers enjoy. While it has been discountined they still have software support for it if u want to run it with a raspberry pi or something. They have steam os and developed alot of linux support to help linux users play more games. They made the steam deck which is helping reach the handheld market. I say they are doing their jobs pretty well as a gaming publisher
EVERY game developer i have spoken to and seen actually think the 30% is fair the only ones I've seen complain are the ones that sell poorly because the game they made is boring and attract SO few people or big game companies like ubisoft that then realize that farcry 6 isn't good enough to get people to use epic games store
its a 30% cut then if u reach a goal it goes down to a 25% cut then it can even reach a 20% cut so the HUGE games often loose 20% not 30% also they do get mad that's why cod is on battle net and why ubisoft tried there own store then epic games only to admit defete and return to steam because gamers make the choice WHERE they want to buy it and if your game is mid I'm not going to epic games or some launcher I've never heard of @@LiveGameDriveChannel

So.... I'll admit to being one of Nintendo's fans I love their games and characters and IPs. And I love that it's one of the few companies where I can pre-order a game with confidence that I will get a playable, and generally really good, game (though Pokemon Scarlet + Violet is VERY worrying that this might be changing) That said, every point you raised regarding Nintendo and their Pride is... so painfully true. Heck, I'd even argue that the reason the majority of their games are good on release is because of their pride. But gosh, imagine how much better they could be if they just... allowed creators to create. I'll forever be heartbroken at the loss of SilvaGunner - that channel helped get me through university. And the only reason I could think of for Nintendo to do this is pure spite I guess my takeaway is, as others have mentioned love - not worship and always be aware of a company's flaws - nothing and noone should be on a pedestal
The Pokémon franchise has never had the same quality standards as the rest of Nintendo. However, the Super Mario Bros movie is a worrying sign, since that movie was just a cash grab without a very good story.

12:08: That's quite disingenuous to say that Valve takes their cut on Steam for "hosting it". The Steam backend and developer tools receive constant innovation, and have made developers and publishers lives so much easier, it's not even funny. Don't take it from me, take it from an indie dev that has been "in the game" for more than 20 years by now and remembers the time before platforms like Steam existed (ua-cam.com/video/stxVBJem3Rs/v-deo.html) Transcript of the relevant part for people who don't want to click a video link: I hear indies complain all the time about the cut that Apple and Steam take. But all of the stuff that Steam does for you and makes easy I've had to do myself, support myself [...]. I've hired full-time employees to do the stuff that Steam does. I'm surprised you didn't talk about Bungie (you did for a brief moment to mention Halo and 343I, and while I agree with your point there, for the most part, you ended up just transitioning to Halo at that point). Especially after they've split away from Activision, they're still treating Destiny 2 horribly. We though it was Activision treating Destiny bad, it was Bungie who was, and still is. You should read up on it, if you don't know already.
10:41 You can feel the disbelief and anguish in their voices, it’s almost comical. When I heard Valve, I instantly thought of sloth. Because, what are they doing game development wise? I mean, their hardware’s nice. But, what other games can they release(that aren’t spin-offs).
Also note that Nintendo doesn't have reviews for games on the eShop, and doesn't allow refunds, which isn't that big of a deal cuz you can look It up, but if you only have a switch then that sucks
Honestly I don't have words to say because you said anything I would have for me and better than I could structure in a comment. I'd only add that hell if you wanted to get into everything in a multipart or marathon video (which, why would you want that that sounds like the embodiment of pain and with corpos like Nintendo begging to be taken down) I would end up watching the full thing. The only thing that really rubs me the wrong way so far is assuming that hosting and letting people download software isn't worth adequate compensation. None of us host software or even abandonware/retro games and the people that due rely on their day jobs, community support, ads, donations etc. Especially all the games I play that were made 20 years ago. I'm not going on ebay to hunt down system shock 2 when it's available and will still be available in 30-50 years. This became much easier for me to understand and relate to when I came to a realization: Company executives claim to be responsible for bringing good things to us, but their role is only to EMPLOY the people who do the ACTUAL creative work. Does doing so bring those things to us? Sometimes, but not always. Occasionally it means keeping the work FROM us, often through cancellation. Every creative empire is kept afloat by multiple, sometimes countless creators. So ask yourself: does your favorite company truly empower creators? Or is it merely a bunch of greedy execs holding the keys to their IPs, acting as gatekeeper to all the ACTUAL creation?... This... THIS is why I've started enjoying more indie video games in recent years. There's too much talent out there, and it doesn't necessarily require the rights to old franchises in order to be good.
True. Imagine what could be achieved if we didn't construct our economies around the profit incentive. What would happen once genuine talent - in all fields, not just gaming - was not constrained by greedy executives.
Steam definitely takes a hefty chunk of the revenue, but it is also the most fleshed out and feature packed launcher. I think the reason that steam is so popular, and that backlash is generated when a company makes a separate launcher is the lack of features performance and value that steam gives player. The steam link, remote play, controller emulation and config support make steam games a much better value for consumers even though it is miles worse revenue wise for devs. The steam CD key market also allows consumers to get an even better deal at the expense of the developer's profits. Other launchers have key redemption but many of them are rarely as populated and competitively priced as steams key market. Other launcher versions of games will sometimes be cheaper because of the higher demand for steam keys instead of other launchers keys. I'd love to see epic flesh out their launcher and add more features but until then I don't think they will be able to reach the same appeal and wide audience of games they aren't giving for free or making exclusive. I'm not sure the validity of this claim but steam also seems to have better download speeds, likely due to their larger network of servers. Many launchers such as Origin or Ubisoft's are infamous, at least in my circles, for poor performance, intrusive and expensive background tasks and lackluster social interfaces. I'd like to see more competent competition but the only mainstream launcher that hosts games they didn't develop or publish seems to be epic at the moment. Itch.io and GOG Galaxy especially have more potential but are currently more niche and indie focused than Epic and Steam.
yes but they also freely promote games u are likely to like while epic CONTANTLY promotes me sports games i have NEVER paid for a sports game thus featuring it on my home page is USELESS

Young game designers, programmers employees of working to make any game you need to make sure you before you accept a 40 hr a week average salary that has very specific carve outs that pay you the average hours of Overtime at the end of each month. This way regardless of the week all OT counts to the average. This way the company can't pull any tricks on you. Like working you hard for 3 weeks only to cut your hours on the 4th week negating the 3 weeks of 80hr to 100 hrs per week and wiping out the OT balance. Regardless of this any time per week over 40= OT pay time&half. Be smart and value yourself. I was far too naive when it came to this with my employers.

Wrath is the only one that wasn’t very obvious to me. I still think it didn’t make much sense.

I bet that was funny to see
So I'm not sure I agree with the steam section.
The Steam section was one of the most braindead takes I've heard in a video.

I feel like Ubisoft really embodies all 7 of these sins. From their disgustingly endless sexual assault lawsuits, to their intense focus on micro transactions in Assassin’s Creed, oh, and their dubious reliance on the Assassin’s Creed brand. This is a truly gross company, and It saddens me greatly because Assassin’s Creed was what made me want to persue history and teaching as my dream…
Isn't ubisoft like all women ?
@@norbertscheibenreif8336
Are you asking if the company is mostly made up of women? In that case, no. A lot of gaming companies when taking team photos actually tend to put most of the women at the front to appear more inclusive. Rocksteady is known to do this, going back to 2009.
I'm just glad that SEGA/Atlus can be ruled out of the general "evil/greedy game company" list. Surprised nobody mentioned them as a counterclaim, but I understand they're not like most video game companies in this context.
They aren't perfect but they have infinite patience with fans, considering how they act and what kind of content they made (and they entered several horrible drama)
That's why indie developers are the only ones I support now.

You improved alot in your video making skills, ever since i first watched your floppa and bingus video, I cant wait what else you have to make.
EVERY game developer i have spoken to and seen actually think the 30% is fair the only ones I've seen complain are the ones that sell poorly because the game they made is boring and attract SO few people or big game companies like ubisoft that then realize that farcry 6 isn't good enough to get people to use epic games store
its a 30% cut then if u reach a goal it goes down to a 25% cut then it can even reach a 20% cut so the HUGE games often loose 20% not 30% also they do get mad that's why cod is on battle net and why ubisoft tried there own store then epic games only to admit defete and return to steam because gamers make the choice WHERE they want to buy it and if your game is mid I'm not going to epic games or some launcher I've never heard of @@LiveGameDriveChannel
they are not a publisher they are a game marketplace @@inoukim
I was typing a serious comment but then heard the “At least we’ll have more FNAF games. Wait what happened to Scott Cawthon-?” and now I’m laughing so hard.
As a huge FNAF fan that made my week. I already loved and liked the video but that SENT ME
Seriously though loved the video, I’m so glad it was in my recommended today
Can I just say, I love your videos. But I do happen to notice a copious amount of Beastars music throughout. Nice taste, the ost slaps. Thanks for another amazing video!
You will likely find at least one Beastars song in every single video from here to my most recent one. It's my favorite OST of all time easily.
this is a very well put together video, im sure it’ll be recommended for everyone eventually…
So.... I'll admit to being one of Nintendo's fans
I love their games and characters and IPs. And I love that it's one of the few companies where I can pre-order a game with confidence that I will get a playable, and generally really good, game (though Pokemon Scarlet + Violet is VERY worrying that this might be changing)
That said, every point you raised regarding Nintendo and their Pride is... so painfully true. Heck, I'd even argue that the reason the majority of their games are good on release is because of their pride.
But gosh, imagine how much better they could be if they just... allowed creators to create. I'll forever be heartbroken at the loss of SilvaGunner - that channel helped get me through university. And the only reason I could think of for Nintendo to do this is pure spite
I guess my takeaway is, as others have mentioned
love - not worship
and always be aware of a company's flaws - nothing and noone should be on a pedestal
The Pokémon franchise has never had the same quality standards as the rest of Nintendo.
However, the Super Mario Bros movie is a worrying sign, since that movie was just a cash grab without a very good story.
@@me-myself-i787 It's mostly because the Pokemon franchise is not manage by Nintendo (they are just the publisher), they are managed mostly my The Pokemon Company and devlopped by Game Freak (which is pretty much an indie studio with good funds)
Im still not keen on even loving it. the practices and executions just make me puke, to then hide themselves in the pride.
They have to make good games to mantain loyalty and rack up sales... and sometimes not even that
honestly, they make great games. Genuinely. But. I have refused to buy their games for years, because of shit like this. And I wish more people followed suit.
@@me-myself-i787 I mean it was a Mario movie, of course, it wasn't going to have some super deep and complex lore. It was a movie made for entertaining and is probably rightly labeled a kids movie.
As a Nintendo fan, can confirm.
Nintendo fan here, when I like a game I play, I find a way to give directly to the people in the credits.
I don't buy games from Nintendo. All the games can be acquired for free, even as all of the eShops have been nuked.
I would love to see a whole video on the smash issues or that whole scene, I feel like you would kill it with that. Love the content!
Spot on, please do continue with a part 2 this was very good. We need to get more traction on this issue, it is a real issue, it has only been gotten worse over the past 2 to 3 years.

That's quite disingenuous to say that Valve takes their cut on Steam for "hosting it".
The Steam backend and developer tools receive constant innovation, and have made developers and publishers lives so much easier, it's not even funny.
Don't take it from me, take it from an indie dev that has been "in the game" for more than 20 years by now and remembers the time before platforms like Steam existed (ua-cam.com/video/stxVBJem3Rs/v-deo.html)
Transcript of the relevant part for people who don't want to click a video link:
I hear indies complain all the time about the cut that Apple and Steam take. But all of the stuff that Steam does for you and makes easy I've had to do myself, support myself [...]. Valve does NOT deserve to be grouped with the other companies here
Funny how he doesn't mention that workers in 99% of game companies don't get the share from profits and somehow it's only them who lose 30% and not CEOs and shareholders.
My first though definitely not last video from you. Very well done, as well as thoroughly entertaining/informative through and through. Good going.
My guy, this is a PERFECT video
Well done
10:41 You can feel the disbelief and anguish in their voices, it’s almost comical.
When I heard Valve, I instantly thought of sloth. Because, what are they doing game development wise? I mean, their hardware’s nice. But, what other games can they release(that aren’t spin-offs).
Half Life 3
I'm sorry I'll stop, I just thought it was funny 😂
Valve has become a software and hardware company. The games they make are to push the boundaries of the things they decide to push
Bra-fucking-vo, you had me both holding entire convos with my headmates mid video about how right you actually are and had a few of us even laughing for over 10 mins at some of the punchlines of the video even if it wasn't the point of the video.
this video concept is the coolest thing !! your videos are amazing dude
Growing up I actually bought a ton of games because I knew that I was poor and I would never be able to play these games. (some could be played on low settings) I just keep building a library and now at 25 I can play fear 2 on my 1080, Gmod on my 1660ti, and atomic heart on my new 4080. I don't know any other company that would have given a s*** enough to let me keep all this software over the years.
Netflix used to be that guy until they cut shows left and right, same for HBO, Hulu, at some point the license runs out but steam as a service has never let me down. Not a single time. Unlike people steam has always been a consistent and reliable service. AND I CAN USE IT OFFLINE ✊🏾
Yeah, this guy clearly does not understand the costs of running an operation like Steam. Valve is one of the very, VERY few companies that are actually somewhat good, yet people online seem to have some kind of vendetta against them
exactly do they not understand how EXPENSIVE bandwidth can get when people are downloading 100+ gb games constantly the 30% chunk is more then fair
exactly SONY and Microsoft charge that 30% ON TOP of the monthly fee to users + have ADS in the damn store itself STEAMs featured are not ads u cannot pay to win yourself a first page result steams money comes fully from that 30% cut with that they pay for the servers and everything else its crazy how people thing UH they should only take 5% that's "free money" all they do is host it these people DO NOT understand bandwidth and storage costs at all@@lukaszspychaj9210
the seven deadly sins: greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, sloth and nintendo.
This became much easier for me to understand and relate to when I came to a realization:
Company executives claim to be responsible for bringing good things to us, but their role is only to EMPLOY the people who do the ACTUAL creative work.

Capcom does. Monster hunter for life.
The 7 deadly sims idea is such a good and engaging way to portray the information well done!
This is why I refuse to buy AAA games, and I probably haven’t except a handful of times for like 15 years. Not only are the companies shady af, but the games themselves are uninspired and unfinished. Really makes it hard to enjoy gaming these days
