You know what, you might be correct on one aspect, both were infatuated with their brides initially. in Henry was infatuated with Catherine but through the years, she failed to produce a male heir and welp, she's gotten older therefore when the younger Anne started to shine, we all knew what happened. On the other hand, I sincerely thought that while Charles never got over Camilla, but at one point he probably did like Diana (esp. physically, Diana was beautiful). Henry did end up falling hard for Anne, but I doubt that it's the same with Charles and Camilla. Henry ended up beheading Anne while Charles ended up marrying Camilla.

The series made it seem like Diana and Charles would have been better off as friends then as being married. I mean Charles seemed like he had an interest in her but more of a friendly interest and never truly love. His family, however, had been so smitten with her and he had been quite old already so there was a lot of pressure put on him to marry someone and she was so to say the only option at the time.
He could've married Diana's older sister, he was dating her after all. She's in the 20s, Diana was in her teen (late teen but still). Idk why he chose her, I think partly the whole 'virgin' aspect and she's so young, so they thought they could 'mold' her or make her be the 'obedient' wife, but it's not in her nature to be the 'obedient' and 'meek' royal, unfortunately.

Is there anyone else here who actually finds it sadder to watch the moments when Charles and Diana seemed happy with each other - knowing how fleeting those moments were? Even sadder than the blistering scenes where she's vomiting or when Charles calls the marriage "this grotesque misalliance?" It's similar to how many people find it harder to watch footage of Charles and Diana's wedding than of Diana's funeral. At least by the time of the funeral she was finally at peace. But seeing her walking down the aisle, you think of all the misery that was awaiting her. You think "Poor girl, if only someone had stopped her. I was infatuated with them both when I was a child. Watched their marriage on TV at 4 am or at least replays of it all morning. I thought they were remarkable people and wished it were me too. I saw her as so casually outgoing and brilliant. I don't know why she is painted as shy/ somewhat simple. As Princess she was v captivating to the people, a natural crowd pleaser, very pretty and well pleasing. She remained very beloved of the public all her years until that fateful trajedy. Her parents, sisters and children all adored her. We rarely remember her family that raised her, who must've suffered so much after the news of her death :(

I think in certain aspects he may have love Diana; there were certain aspects he definitely admires about her. But to him, Diana was a key to the life he wants, but that wasn't the key he didn't want. He did not get the freedom he dreamed he could have with that life; with Camila. You can almost see when he is comparing them together, to see which is better or what would have been like had Camilia been there. Charles was completely a selfish person...he used Diana to secure his opportunity to be the next king... yeah he never discarded the idea of being king...he could have married Camilla if he had refused to be the next king, but he wanted both...he wanted power and attention, that's why he married Diana and later purposefully treated her like that so that she becomes vulnerable, does some mistakes based on which he can divorce her...it was all along His and camilla's plan.

He had to abdicate the throne, it was kind of a rule that a future king or a reigning king can't marry a divorced woman, so if Charles had married Camilla he would have had to waive his right to the throne, coz Camilla was already married...

The private secretary's book is very insightful & shows an insecure, compiles woman who just needed some support from on her husband,but got public put downs ( often in front of staff & often in front of VIP's & dignitaries on royal visits) & disinterest.

Charles isn’t the first person to be denied marriage to someone they love. However once you decide to commit to another person and marry them, you cannot simply go on and give personalised gifts to each other, call them on the phone constantly , be friends with them or wear your ex lover’s gift of your names intertwined.

Just like how Andrew had an adventure with Anne. The couple probably see it as their pre-marriage adventure so one day they can tell their grandkid that their mom and dad bone the royal family once.
The thing is if Camilla is committed to Charles and the couple simply not marry to anyone else they might simply be married. Elizabeth II did that with Philip. The Japanese Emperor also refused any other marital prospect except his chosen wife.

ME!!! To be honest, when I suspend my disbelief, I see them not as the actual historical Charles and Diana but fictional characters. Watching Josh and Emma portray Charles and Diana, I actually am rooting for the two characters.

The series made it seem like Diana and Charles would have been better off as friends then as being married. I mean Charles seemed like he had an interest in her but more of a friendly interest and never truly love. His family, however, had been so smitten with her and he had been quite old already so there was a lot of pressure put on him to marry someone and she was so to say the only option at the time.
He could've married Diana's older sister, he was dating her after all. She's in the 20s, Diana was in her teen (late teen but still). Idk why he chose her, I think partly the whole 'virgin' aspect and she's so young, so they thought they could 'mold' her or make her be the 'obedient' wife, but it's not in her nature to be the 'obedient' and 'meek' royal, unfortunately.

Is there anyone else here who actually finds it sadder to watch the moments when Charles and Diana seemed happy with each other - knowing how fleeting those moments were? Even sadder than the blistering scenes where she's vomiting or when Charles calls the marriage "this grotesque misalliance?" It's similar to how many people find it harder to watch footage of Charles and Diana's wedding than of Diana's funeral. At least by the time of the funeral she was finally at peace. But seeing her walking down the aisle, you think of all the misery that was awaiting her. You think "Poor girl, if only someone had stopped her. She could have found a man she really could have been happy with."

I was infatuated with them both when I was a child. Watched their marriage on TV at 4 am or at least replays of it all morning. I thought they were remarkable people and wished it were me too. I saw her as so casually outgoing and brilliant. I don't know why she is painted as shy/ somewhat simple. As Princess she was v captivating to the people, a natural crowd pleaser, very pretty and well pleasing. She remained very beloved of the public all her years until that fateful trajedy. Her parents, sisters and children all adored her. We rarely remember her family that raised her, who must've suffered so much after the news of her death :(

I think in certain aspects he may have love Diana; there were certain aspects he definitely admires about her. But to him, Diana was a key to the life he wants, but that wasn't the key he didn't want. He did not get the freedom he dreamed he could have with that life; with Camila. You can almost see when he is comparing them together, to see which is better or what would have been like had Camilia been there. He was always living in the past, living in the what-ifs, clouding him from the present, where he could improve the life he had, by just giving a chance The inability to achieve the freedom he desired, he lashed it out on her. When you disrespect your wife, you are basically giving everyone a right to treat her as such and that is what our princess had to go through. That is by far, the worst thing a husband can do to his wife
I think at one point in there relationship, he did have feelings for Diana...it's just that his feelings for Camilla were much stronger. You can love two people at the same time but, never in equal measure.
