- This BMW M3 (E46) was the last generation M3 to use a Naturally aspirated Inline 6 Cylinder. Today's M3 boast a Twin Turbo 6 Cylinder but at quite a hefty starting price at $65,000. How good can an M3 thats 13 years old be? Lets find out!

Love it. Looks Great. The trunk is a bit off but thats what you sacrifice for having a CSL style trunk on a vert. Many talk smack about the vert. Yes, everyone knows the coupe is better. If your planning on tracking it and driving like a wild animal down curves then go for it. But realistically when do you get to do that or how often. I on the other hand love the Vert I've owned two and both have been verts. I had the chance of buying a coupe but its hard to find one that wasn't abused or low mileage. And if you do find one get ready to break the bank. The one I bought was one owner (The owner of the BMW dealer I purchased it from) and was very well taken cared of with only 40k miles and a 6 speed manual. For a fraction of a coupe. Yes I love the coupe and would take it over a vert if I wanted to track it or drive it in curves. But I live in Houston, where theres nothing but straights everywhere you see. I love to drop the top and take my wife for a spin. The car looks great with the top down and you get to enjoy that raspy exhaust even more. You also create a lot of attention and I love it. Everyone has their opinions and preferences and thats fine but I don't see why they have to be critics. The funny thing is most of them do not even own one or ever driven one. Great review. And to the owner, Awesome car.

That's otherwise a nice example if it were not for the mismatched boot lid, M stripe grille stickers and angel eyes. The best kind of E46 M3 is the one that's kept closest to OEM, with only subtle functional mods.

First raspy exhaust note I liked, sounds angry AF.
For anyone wanting to buy one of these car, great choice by the way, I think he made an error in saying that there's a lot of power and torque in the lower RPM's. This is truly not the case. The high-reving S54 engine is not known for that, and as someone who owns one I'll tell you that the power doesn't really hit until 4500-5000 RPM/s, but then you get a lot of power all the way up to 8000 RPM's. I think what he was feeling was the difference between having it in sport mode compared to not having it in sport mode. Either way, good review, just thought I'd clear that up.
Toby Bruckner Maybe your vanos is not working properly.
Lol definitely not the case. I mean you can make the wheels spin and all that, but what I'm saying is that it's not known for lower end torque. This engine is literally known for it's high end torque.
Toby Bruckner understood but the vanos provides a broad torque band throughout the rev range versus for example vtec that is only noticeable around 6500rpm. If your vanos is working properly you should notice the instant torque. Maybe it's just my car but even my co-workers tell me my car feels torquey. Fyi, if you live in hot climate or been running the car for a bit, the IAT will read higher than the actual air temp, causing the car to pull timing and so forth resulting in lost of hp& torque.
I definitely feel the torque. I'm just saying it's known for it's top end. It had torque down low, but just not nearly as much.

Love the video quality and the sound is great. The only problem is the only slower E46 M3 than the convertible is the convertible with a hard top! I admire your passion but for us purists you were simply driving the wrong car.
I'm not sure how being a purist would effect the choice of having a convertible M3. To each his own though bud.
The problem with the convertible is the extra weight and the more flexible chassis. And the hard top adds even more weight. On the ground this car is at least 400 lbs heavier than the coupe and that's a considerable difference and a well known compromise in deciding between the two.Convertibles sell for thousands less than coupes if at all at this point. But to each his own though, right bud?

@@jimmysprinkle9666 That only matters if you buy it specifically for track use only. Otherwise get off your high horse acting like your not a purist getting a vert. A vert with a proper coilover suspension is extremely capable.

It is a big deal. The vert is 400lbs heavier and the chassis is not as stiff as the coupe.
This car is from the era in which making it a convertible sacrificed a lot of performance.

Hey Rick, thanks! The exhaust is a Borla Cat back with Statusgruppe Headers. The combination made the exhaust sound alittle raspy but I did not notice any drone. However, I never drove it on the Highway which is probably where it will drone most if it does at all.

Frankly I see the vert and hardtop as two very different vehicles. significant weight difference, shitty chassis, boxy body etc still a great car but if you're going to review and e46 don't review a vert. ( go the extra mile and try to find a csl)
Richie J "go the extra mile" is quite nearly difficult considering being able to find a csl in America and more specifically southern california will prove quite difficult. There weren't many produced and it was for the European market.

Richie J I don't know about you, but im trying to aim for a comfortable car to daily, I would love to have the vert for that, but if I wanted an all out track car, I'd go for a coupe.
To each their own, any M3 is a great car I just think if your going to review an M3 it should be a coupe. I'm biased because I've drove a vert and a coupe and they feel completely different, I have a coupe and love it.
