I've seen recommendations to make a small mountain (with a pointy tip like a pyramid) rather than create a flat bed in the coffee ground holder. This way, the water lands on top and trickles down to the rest of the grounds. When the process completes, you should see a nice flat bed of evenly soaked grounds (tip was recommended on reddit).
