It should be noted that: only one model (the "Select") has the half-pot switch. On a positive side, other Moccamaster models do come with a thermal carafe instead of a hot plate. All Moccamasters have similar builds and internal parts, though. So there are options!

We are proud owners of a now 10 year old Moccamaster, And in those 10 years of being used at least once a day, not a thing broke or failed us, it just keeps on going like a champ, making one great batch of coffee after another, cheers ☕

Dude. I begrudgingly bought one of these a few months ago after my wife continuously complained I was taking too much time making pour overs. I spent years trying to perfect my pour over technique. I hate this machine for making me feel like I wasted years of my life. The coffee (on average) that it produces easily matches what I was producing with my Commandante and Orea V3. I can’t explain it. I do find that giving it a little stir during bloom can help with extraction. I also find that keeping the lid on during the brew is key. Other than that, it’s flawless. I hate that I love it so much. I echo all your sentiments. Great vid.

mike, i just recently started to put the drip stopper on and let the hot water sit with the coffee. i then stir it , i do this two times during brewing.......to me, i find that the coffee is even better tasting this way.......

I own this coffee maker also and I love it. I have left coffee on the burner for up to half an hour and I did not notice much of a difference in the taste of the coffee like I have in other coffee makers. I have always felt like the thermo carafes change the taste of the coffee a little bit, but that’s just me. This makes the best drip coffee.

here in Finland the Moccamaster is a household stable you can find ANYWHERE, so i've had my fair share of experience with them aswell as growing to like the coffee it produces, much better than most popular batch brewing alternatives. They usually have a manual drip lock on the filter cone, which in my experience seems to never work properly for some reason so glad to see theres a model of this legendary brewer that seems to have upgraded the drip lock system.
Like you said also, one of the things I dont like about it is the plastic peripherals that feel really cheap, even though they usually last pretty long regardless. I wish Moccamaster would make alternative peripherals in more premium materials to be purchased separately, for example.
    Great video as always, too!

I Highly agree. I generally do a V60 or an Aeropress but if we have guests over, I usually go with the Moccamaster. It's a solid brew and it doesn't feel like I'm "wasting beans". As a bonus, I don't have to stand in the corner meticulously trying to maximize extraction while guests/friends wait awkwardly.
Though, I wonder how the Chemex Compares. That's the one I use for 3-6 people.

For the hot plate I use a silicon trivet ( hot pot pad ) to separate the carafe from the hot plate. Easy.
I prefer brewing into glass so doing this trivet thing works great for me.
If I want to reheat remaining coffee I simply remove the trivet.
To level up the results of the brewer, I rinse the paper filter while it is in the funnel as one does with a pour over funnel. Then I add the grounds and brew. (Naturally, dispose of the water from the rinse before brewing.)

Hi from Malaysia! thanks for the awesome review! We use it at your cafe roastery too. Batch brews are not so popular in specialty coffee shops in Malaysia just yet and it has a negative perception on it.
But we have been using this for close to 2 years now and boy are we happy to have it. What we were able to do with this tool was offer at wide range of single origin coffees to our customer, while still being able to charge them a afforadable price. As our barista do not have to be there constantly taking care of the brew unlike a traditional V60. It has so much more upside than downside.
Everytime when our customer take the first sip for the mccomaster, they are pleasantly surprised by the brew quality. But I must admit that, there are certain coffees that are harder to extract, or more complex, does not do well with the mccamaster. Overall, this machine allows us to showcase our beans and single origin that we've roasted in an easy and simple manner.
We might just have to do a review on it too :)

  • @HannesNitzsche
    @HannesNitzsche Рік тому +6

I guess part of the reason for the thin/cheap/flimsy plastic parts is that they have low heat retention and thus don’t affect the coffee bed while brewing.
I have been eyeing the moccamaster select for a while now as I’d also like to have a brewer for more than two people for when we have friends over. And it’s certainly still on the list, but for the time being we just got a 6-cup Chemex for its aesthetics and because it’s a relatively low-budget batch brewer.

so would not really apply to their sturdy stainless steel carafe. Only complaint I have with it is No specific pouring spout for more directional use. Needs redesigning in this respect only. This is actually the reason that I bought the Moccamaster. It performs very well for even a single cup brew due to the conical shape. Flatbed Brewers typically struggle a lot in that regard, but the Moccamaster is great. Even has the lower flow mode for small batches

I own two of these makers. I have tried everything, and this makes the most reliably great pot of coffee. Every time, and anyone, and I mean anyone can make it work. You are right about the quality of coffee is based on the beans. I know you didn't like the plastic, but if these parts were made of something else it adds costs in a place where you don't need too. The temp of the water is the miracle. And FAST. I had the thermal pot version, but really the hot plate is better. I also appreciate that you can get the parts. Yes it is fixable. Whether it is the pot or basket, it's available. I will not complain about the outrageous price of the pots in Canada, I think that is a market issue. I have dark blue and one in gold.

I just got mine after saving up a bit. I love the utily looks and the simplicity of it. I used to go to Dunkin but I sold my stores (yes) so I researched something to repicate the brew of Dunkin but I didn't want a huge BUNN unit in my kitchen. Coffee quality👉 Precise grind weight 👉and very high temp make the best coffee brews. I agree about the hot plate but if you don't drink your coffee in 18 minutes (when it starts to become acidic) buy a better coffee, make a smaller batch or buy an insulted carafe. Cheers! ☕

LOL I have spent a lot of time brewing various espresso based drinks and pour overs so I know what that feels like.
While I got complimented I didn't really have much access to the conversation.
Still fun to make that much coffee back to back.
Batch brewing I have encountered has been pretty poor so it must have been the beans or may have been quite stale.

I switched from a Bonavita to a Moccamaster and my one complaint is that when I look at the coffee bed after it’s done brewing it just doesn’t look evenly extracted. There is a noticeable channel in the middle of the bed. I usually end up stirring initially and then agitating the grounds at certain points during the brew to get a more flat and even looking coffee bed. I don’t know if this has any impact on the results in the cup, but visually it just throws me off and the process ends up being more hands on than I was hoping. Anyone have the same issue?

As mentioned, at the beginning of the coffee quality section, there is definitely a noticeable issue with water distribution on the Moccamaster. Doing some agitation, or a swirl at the beginning of the brew definitely helps, and I find that grinding slightly finer to slow the flow is also beneficial.

Stand correctly, brushed brass and dark blue. Now to the get guts up and buy the expresso maker.... by the way, I did some basic math. I have made over 100 pots with my Canadian Mocca since I got it in May. Average of 5 mugs per pot. So, 500 mugs would have been $1,000 at least in Tims. Even with the cost of the coffee and a decent grinder, any pot I make now is.... free..

Let us not forget that no two people have the same taste and will not agree on what is the best. For the past several months, I have brewed at least 15 different brands, med and dark. At the end of the brewing all those brands, The old fashion grocery store coffee Eight O'Clock med roast is some of the best tasting. How about that. I do like Blue Bottle and even Dunkin has some really good taste. Blackout coffee to me is over roasted and too bitter. Peet's med roast is also some really good coffee. I try to buy whole bean and not pre-ground. I have a company two mile from my house in Irmo South Carolina, Loveland. They have a nice coffee shop that and they roast the coffee. Soda City is one of their brand names. It is ok but much like Blackout. Chef Jerry Irmo South Carolina USA

You seem to be listing quite a few grocery store brands. I'd encourage you to keep exploring freshly roasted coffee! It is a commodity that goes stale, and is best enjoyed fresh around 1-3 weeks after the roast date. Impossible from a grocery store

I did mention some grocery store brands. I do purchase as much speciality coffee. I totally understand what is fresh and what is not. I think over the past year, I have watched every video James Hoffman has produced. lol So I am not here blind. I do understand coffee. I also see a lot of grocery store coffee just as good as the high end. To me it is all about the machine, the grinding and your preference for taste. One of the biggest problems I see is the amount of coffee most brands want you to use. Even my Breville says with a full pot of 60 oz, 12 scoops or over 100 grams. I have brewed that much and find that one huge waste of money and coffee. @@LifestyleLab_

At last a reviewer who is bold enough to critise the quality of the plastics used. Actually for the price it's quite flagrant. I have written to the company suggesting they upgrade the plastics. Surprised they failed to reply. One other point the control button which operates the machine once the carad (insulated is best)f is fully inserted sometimes sticks as well as the non-drip system. Apart from that its probably the fastest filter system in the world and results are very good

What's the weird plastic cone inside the coffee pitcher? And also let me guess BPA free ? bpa is just a sales pitch, is not really free they use bisphenol b Plastic which is worse. Coffee company should not use plastic of any sort inside of the machine components, the filter holder or inside the pitcher . Due to absorption of micro plastics when heated.
