Thanks! I guess it’s a good news bad news story. We “Have” the deer around but don’t like how they behave with our stuff. Lol. Appreciate your insight!
Now you tell me, lol! I searched for that answer this spring but couldn’t find one. These trees did need the suckers removed and the balance of the pruning was a one time thing. The prior owner just kind of let them go. From here on out, I think they look pretty good. Thanks for the insight, I do appreciate it.
@@creekriseoutdoors Best of luck with the trees. I have around 50 trees and every year I add more. It's a learning process for all of us. The deer will destroy those trees unless you protect them for about 10 years. After that they can survive the deer. Even after that I protect the trunk of the tree as long as I can. The deer will browse the leaves and anything they can reach. My hope is that the American chestnut tree can make a come back. They have added a Gene from wheat to the American chestnut tree that makes it Blight resistant like your Dunstan trees.Yet the government won't approve it as they consider it a GMO. That's the best option for American chestnut trees surviving we have come up with in the last 60 years..
Thank you. Yes, I hope they make a comeback. Such a valuable tree. I hadn’t heard of the wheat gene issue. I’ll have to follow that along. Have a super day.
You can drive a stick of rebar, or any kind of metal rod, on two opposite sides of the trees about 6 inches from the tree. This will stop bucks from rubbing them. I had to do this on some of my young live oaks and they never touched them again. You don’t even need a cage around them.
That was a nice days work, Great job. When they are that big I dont think tubes will fit around them to protect them from the deer. That one tree was pretty big around. Tree tubes have a diameter of about 4-5 inches. If you want to protect them from the deer you might have to do cages. The also have a deer repellant spray, but then that kind of defeats the purpose in having the trees to attract deer.
You can buy tree tubes that you use tie wraps.just put two of them together around your chestnut trees.. I just planted 25 hybrid chestnuts and they are doing great
Thanks for the suggestion Paul. I’ve thought of that but with 89 trees, it seemed daunting. I’ll get them protected and post a video of how I did it. Thanks for watching.
Are you mowing your grass around trees?
Yes. I bought a Bad Boy zero turn mower this year and it’s been great. I can mow within inches of the trees and clean up the rows really nice.
I planted Keiffer pear tree's 10 years ago, had to fence them in or they would all be gone by now due to deer pressure.

Good job, I'm sure the trees will appreciate the attention and care. This will be my third year with chestnut trees, still trying to be patient.
Good luck with your Chestnut trees this year. Thanks for watching.
Good days work bro. Love the orchard and the time lapse of your work. That's pretty cool stuff.
34° buddy... i haven't forgotten...😬👍
Yeah I’m waiting country Charles. Lol. I’ll find time to swing by for an Osceola hunt with ya.
@@creekriseoutdoors you just lmk buddy. We've got a good crop of gobblers this year it's looking like. 👍
Be careful pruning chestnut trees. You can't prune them like Apple trees..

Thanks for that advice. I’ll be hoping to have them all protected by the spring. Thanks for watching and sharing your insight.

Thanks for that feedback. I appreciate your insight and experience. Yeah, I’m thinking some sort of cage is in order.
@@creekriseoutdoors I am just going to accept that some of my trees will get damages by deer.
Yeah I agree with that. We’ll just have to get the big one for the dinner table!! Lol
Buy the slit tree tubes and put two together with tie wraps
Awesome historical lesson on the Chestnuts trees man. Thanks for taking us along with ya. Looking forward to your upcoming deer season brother!
Thanks man. I can’t wait to see what they produce this year!

Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching. Great idea. Good luck with your hybrid Chestnuts!
Could just put some of the same fencing around those trees, 5 foot section zip tied into a circle, no need to put the t post.
Thanks for the suggestion Paul. I’ve thought of that but with 89 trees, it seemed daunting. I’ll get them protected and post a video of how I did it. Thanks for watching.
@@creekriseoutdoors putting in trees is a lot of work, but it's worth it if you can get a higher number to survive...good luck
@@creekriseoutdoors Just get some pieces of 8" stove pipe and stick them around the bases in the fall!
Thanks for the tip! That would certainly work!
