You know, if Jon likes spreadsheets so much (and he does!), he'd probably like an obscure indie title called Dominions (preferably the most feature-complete version, Dominions 5). Someone with twitter or reddit should suggest it to him; it's a turn-based strategy game about a bunch of fantasy versions of (mostly) real cultures having a holy war to decide whose god should control everything.
I'm the middle ground. kind of more towards the former reaction. I went "oh this reminds me of starsector where you can make an empire out of buying and selling drugs in the right places. I should play starsector again."

I think this game is for me (never heard of it before, Transport Fever 1/2 are my fav transport game though). Because some weeks later I've set up LibreOffice Calc (like Excel but free) with formulas, macros and graphs so my trade routes are as effective they can be (and since my job is coding economy software for the financial market, this was easy). Wish there were more data to make use of as there's no good way to tell what gets where. Anyhow, subbed years ago because we had lots of games in common and still my source to get good tips. Thank you 😎 Great update lately too. Now it actually is hard. ;-)
I love games like this since I was a kid. Playing Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizons on my SNES. Which was a game taking place in... I believe it was 1510 to start and was pretty much just sailing around the world doing sailing things back then, trading, exploring, piracy. And had a little bit of storyline for each character as well as the ability to invest in and sway ports and other little things going on. Absolutely fun game, sunk way too many hours into it. Simple as it was back then, it's nice to see those kind of games still flourishing because... I kinda like that mid tier economic game. What I mean by that is that you're not quite doing like some massive: "I run the global economy!" grand strategy level... and not just some personal RPG level of: "Get rich or die trying". But where it's still fairly small in scale (about you and your actions) but also has a persistent world that makes sense and can be impacted. I can't just keep trading Art from Athens and Carpets from Istanbul forever as I'll eventually crash both markets by overstocking them. If I want to explore a new area I haven't been I should be thinking ahead about what trade goods the people in that area might want, like Glass Beads from Amsterdam to trade for Gold from Africa for Spices from India to make a good profit as well as discovering things along the way on my return trip, selling spices in Lisbon, etc.
I played the first Port Royale and a game called Pirates Gold (which basically was pretty much the 1st Port Royale) Loved both of them and like the new things added to this game. Soooo when do we get to see you do a pirates run on this game? That would be fantabulous! :D

Bought Port Royale 3 on a whim as its dirt cheap right now. Big fan of Anno 2070 and really want to get into Tropico 6, and it looked a middle ground. I would call it a coincidence that this was the video today, but coincidences are generally a product of malice.
