Hi mate. I’m looking at building a sleeper pond so your videos have been so helpful! Quick question, were you just using the bog filter on its own? Or did you have a mechanical filter pumping into it? Cheers
It was a pump with s filter sponge inside. It stops larger particles but not smaller. Had to be squeezed out once a week as flow rate went down. If you build s bog filter just make sure you install a bottom flush valve that you can open once a week. Helps a lot eith build up off sediment.
Great overview and summary of your lessons learned. That is quite a bio-load, and as you suggest, I suspect a larger bog filter would bring better results.
You can alleviate some of the burden on your biological filter by using a mechanical filter before the water goes into the Bog. You already have a Pump so its an easy upgrade. It will then prolong the amount of time before you need to clean the bog out.
I do have a little bit of mechanical filtration in pump. This was a bit of experiment to be honest to see how much the filter could handle. I'm gonna build a larger one in next few weeks with bottom drain out of rubbish bin. Thanks for advice.
I've made one out of wooden whisky barrel. What I did was line it with pond liner. Supposed to be waterproof but it stunk off whiskey even after washing. Decided to lie it. For outflow I didn't use uniseal I did circular hole just bigger than outflow size. I chose inch and half pipe as it was 900 litre an hour pump. I put liner through hole. Forced pipe through it then used ct1 sealant all around both sides. Difficult with wooden whisky barrel. Much easier with plastic look whiskey barrel. You can use uniseal or any tank connector.

Yes I'm going to build a larger one with flush valve at bottom in next few weeks.
