👍
I love this have u ever had to clean it tho
Not since it was installed mid summer. Just flush using drain valve. They obviously do need to be cleaned but it depends on fish waste/load They have to deal with. I find them much better than similar sized filters you get from a shop.
@ I just made one for my pond I went to Walmart and got those bags for delicates in the wash and put all the rocks in them so it’s like a giant canister filter, added decor rock on top so when it’s time to clean I can pull the bags out
Good video but was there a pump shield net fitted afterwards?
I should have showed the pump more. It has 2 shields that clip on. You can clip them off and clean. Needs doing once a week otherwise flow can deteriorate.
nice I have copied you for my turtle in the garage for the winter looks nice thanks
Good. I hope he's happy over the winter in his new home.
Why plastic lol it’s not that clean test ur water they prob have a a lot of micro plastics put it in metal bucket with copper pipe in it ur water we’ll be fresh clear and nutrient rich
If I was drinking the water I may do this. I haven't had any issues in past. Your right however about microplastics it is an issue not many are aware of.
Nice and clear water
Lovely video! I've always wanted a container pond but was worried about it freezing over and being too shallow, but I had never considered heating it! Maybe that's a new project I can start next year :)
It's just started snowing here today 2°c. Only thing is the cost of electricity keeps going up. 🙄
You're so lucky you don't have raccoons 😂... They ate all my black moores
Those raccoons sound like a menace.
Nice
Thanks
What about the sunlight? It's going to make the top layer of rocks covered in algae that will go right into the pond immediately
You get a small amount it doesn't cause any issues. If you get a massive amount then your likely getting same growth in pond and your filter system is undersized for stock/bioload. I have a different bog filter that gets quite a bit on top it doesn't cause issues in pond. I have quite a new filter at the minute only 5 weeks old that has a bit. Again not causing issues in pond it's filtering.
Beautiful fish
Thanks
Wow, you have a lot of very lovely fish! I am with you, I like my fish and my plants! Wishing you the best on the new pond project!
Thanks again
Definitely need to overlap the sleepers on the corners for more strength
In the video I talk about this. A larger pond yes definitely. This small pond. Where pressure is not that great. With internal brackets not so much. I made the choice because I prefer the look of it. Personal choice. But good practice is to overlap.
Spent hours watching videos for inspiration on my pond build and yours is up there with the best. Great fish and I love it with the plants and natural look. Looking forward to some videos on your new build. How big are you planning to go?
As big as the misses let's me 🤣 . 1400 gallons maybe. It depends how much I wanna dig down really to add volume. Have you started your build yet? What size you going for.
@ haha the boss always has the final say! ... Not started yet, just finishing off a path and patio in the garden which had a lot of manual digging so i may need to rest my back for a few days before starting the pond 😂 .. Im thinking slightly smaller than yours. 2.4mx1.8x1.2m. ≈5000litres. But I only want 2 sleepers above ground like yours, I don’t like the massive above ground look. I’m also unsure of my filter system. I want to do it diy but not sure if my idea would be good enough as it’s my first one. My current plan is to use 3 of the massive 500litre whiskey barrels. Pump from the pond going to the first one full of filter brushes, feeding the next with 200l of k1 media with an air pump feeding into it to make it a moving bed, which goes to the last one which would basically be a larger version of your bog filter. Not sure if I will need a pump to return back to the pond with that amount of water. Also undecided on if I need a uv somewhere in there. I want to avoid a bottom drain if possible but need to find a pump that would be suitable for moving that amount of water with numerous koi as they grow. 1500litres of filter space seems overkill but it would save me having to redo it as the koi grow in a few years
Yes I have sern people do these sort of systems. Don't they stagger the height of each filter so they naturally feed I to each other. I think it would depend on how much water you want to move an hour and the size of outflow. Does sound like a lot of filtration for size of pond. Maybe 200 litre barrels for filter brushes and k1 media and larger for final bog filter. Make bog filter a feature that looks nice and try and hide other 2 barrels in fake ivy or something. But you know what they say. You can never have enough filtration.
@PeterWilhelm also I find if you have plants you don't really need a uv light. I keep both mine turned off.
@@alexisthisreal5488 yeah that sounds more sensible doing 2 smaller ones. Then if I did need to size up in the future it wouldn’t be too much hassle. Are you going for a bottom drain or just using a pump with your new one? I just don’t like the idea of more digging and having to concrete it in and cutting the liner 😂
im gonna make my bog filter out of a whiskey barrel aswell pal. did you use a uni seal to attach a pipe to the barrel
I've made one out of wooden whisky barrel. What I did was line it with pond liner. Supposed to be waterproof but it stunk off whiskey even after washing. Decided to lie it. For outflow I didn't use uniseal I did circular hole just bigger than outflow size. I chose inch and half pipe as it was 900 litre an hour pump. I put liner through hole. Forced pipe through it then used ct1 sealant all around both sides. Difficult with wooden whisky barrel. Much easier with plastic look whiskey barrel. You can use uniseal or any tank connector.
Looks like a good idea but I'm wondering how you go about cleaning it?
If you size the filter correctly to stock of pond. Use a pump with mechanic filtration in pump. The mesh you can squeeze out once a week. Flush it once a week. I just get gravel out and clean end of season. You can get buckets of water from pond and tip in top with cleaning valve open. It isn't a spotless filter system. They do get dirty but still work if sized correctly.
@alexisthisreal5488 Thanks for the advice and tips.
Thinking
I did roughly the same filter, with a pipe dedicated to blow air from top to bottom to clean the rocks from time to time and pouzzolane. After 24h in my small pond (850 liters) I can see the pump at the bottom. Maybe an additional pre filter be needed but in the end it already works well !
Yes I tend to use the pumps that have filter mesh inside. Tend to get them on Blagdon pumps. And flush regularly. Squeeze mesh out once a week.
Love it. I’m from Canada and enjoy the detail explanation of your pond and fish videos.
Thanks for watching.
Hi mate. Stunning pond that. I’m looking at building one for some koi and goldfish. Really want plants in like yours but reading online many people say the koi will destroy the plants. Have you had that issue? .. do you mind letting me know what type of plants you have in there? Cheers
I have literally had every different plant in there over the years you can purchase from your local koi shop. My Ponds are sleepers and I screw decking timber to top over liner. This decking sticks out into pond about 5-10 mm. What I do Is simply screw the plants pots to the side of this decking so top of plant pot is in line with top of pond. The pot hangs down. The koi can't get to soil to dig out. The roots grow through and the tend not to eat them. Plants do very well like this. With plants like lilies and water Hawthorn which I have in pots on bottom it is harder. They fo like rooting around and dig them out. I put bigger pebbles in top of pots. This tends to stop that but makes it more difficult for plants to grow through pebbles they do though. My koi are max 45 cm. Bigger Fish may cause more trouble. I have a layer of gravel in bottom of pond. Canadian pond weed roots into that and koi don't seem to dig it up.
@ 🙏🏾 Thanks a lot for the reply. Screwing the plants in is a great idea I haven’t seen anyone else do. Keep up the good work, and the videos, they are really helpful 👍🏾
Brilliant, thanks mate, given me just the nudge I needed!
Glad I could help mate.
Hi mate. I’m looking at building a sleeper pond so your videos have been so helpful! Quick question, were you just using the bog filter on its own? Or did you have a mechanical filter pumping into it? Cheers
It was a pump with s filter sponge inside. It stops larger particles but not smaller. Had to be squeezed out once a week as flow rate went down. If you build s bog filter just make sure you install a bottom flush valve that you can open once a week. Helps a lot eith build up off sediment.
@ great thanks mate.
That's real nice buddy, love it
Thanks 👍
you have given some great tips in this video thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
This was fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing! 👏
Glad you enjoyed it.
Such a beautiful pond
Thankyou
I put my pond pump in a bucket with lava rocks in bags on and around the pump. I also put in some filter fiber floss in bags too. Keeping it all in net bags makes it easier to clean with a hose every few months.
Try to clean it with pond water if your not. Water direct from tap will kill beneficial bacteria that colonise all the surfaces. But not bad idea having it around pump.
@@alexisthisreal5488 I have well water and it is fine for use straight in the pond.
@@jonisolis9645 that's great 👍
Wonderful pond and fish! I love my ponds! I need a large one like that!
Sweet, sweet, sweet!
Very inspiring. I'm in a very similar situation to you, experimenting with some small above-ground ponds, as well as creating some simple nurseries to learn to grow lotuses, lilies, water lettuce, mosaic plants, duckweed etc, mostly for my turtle pond. Love your explanation of the bog filter, thank you. I'm going to give that a try
I'm glad you liked it. It's nice being able to create and experiment in this way.
@@alexisthisreal5488 Totally agree. Love pottering around the garden trying to create new environments for wildlife. I'll be following any new ideas you might have :)
Water hawthorn? Nice.
Thanks mate. Yes water Hawthorn.
Nice job mate 👍
Cheers mate
Beautiful pond, nice work 👍
Thanks mate
I love both of your fish ponds! 🐟🪴🐟🪴 You could also build a box around the pond and filter and add some foam in the inside spaces to insulate the pond for winter.
Yes that would definitely save on heating bill. Think I may do something like this from months Dec to end of Feb.
Instead of trying to slow the pump down which can cause back pressure on it, I would just add a splitter to the hose and add another fountain to the pond, like a frog that spits water. Bog filters are wonderful!
I think I'm going to increase size of outflow to handle 900 litres an hour. I want a little more movement in water to make sure waste doesn't sit on bottom. It's all a bit of an experiment. What I like about ponds really. Being able to tinker about and play with things over time to help improve environment for fish.
Great video, i really enjoyed watching! Keep it up!
Thankyou. Glad you liked it.
Super lovely goldfish! Love your pond! 💚💚💚💚 When you say 10 degrees is that C or F? 10 °C = 50 °F
Yes 50 °f . They can be quite delicate and do not like temps below that. Even then they have to be climatized slowly. Stock spring when temps up so ad winter rolls in they get used to decrease in temp. Don't put a fish in in say Sept Oct when nights are cold and fish may have been kept in 23 °c .
I'm not sure what weather is like where you are. I'm from UK near London so winter can be cold.
@@alexisthisreal5488 I got my fancy goldfish in a tub in my greenhouse. My comets are in an outside pond.
1,500 liters is equal to about 396 gallons. Super lovely pond! I am in Louisiana and want to try my fancy Goldfish outside too. I need to build a larger pond for them in the ground.
What are winters like there?
@@alexisthisreal5488 Mild except for a few cold spells down in the teens F.
That turned out really nice, and the water is crystal clear. What type of floating plant is that, I know the water lettuce but I like the look of the other one. My pond is small for typical water lily's but this looks like a decent alternative. Also liking that sand bottom, but don't you find it will get too dirty? Do you regularly clean it? I've currently got river stones on the bottom, but I don't like them, colour is boring and I think they're too big. I'd like sand but don't want the extra hassle of having to clean it.
The plant is called water Hawthorn. I really like them to. As for the sand it is a first for me to. I always used pea gravel or pebbles. The fish stand out much better with sand. As for cleaning its been about 4 weeks I think maybe more since I finished it. I haven't cleaned it yet. I did notice when I put fish in I could see poo on bottom but it seems to gradually move toward pumps ad fish move around and stir things up. Doesn't seem to be a build up anywhere. May change I'll have to keep an eye on it.
@alexisthisreal5488 thanks for that, does the water hawthorn die back during this time of year or do the leaves remain through winter? I hope the sand works out well, does look nicer. Wondering what a mix of sand and some gravel/pebbles might look like...?
@@alexisthisreal5488 If the sand is a thin layer it should work great.
Awesome
Thanks
How many gallons/liters is the pond? Im looking for that exact size and having no luck.
Main container is around 280 litres. I'm sure you can pick them up in a lot of pond supply shops. Filter container is around 100 litres.
Amazing - love it - thank you!
Thankyou
How lovely!
Thanks for watching
another great pond mate, love the look and setup i agree, the sand bottom does look great with goldfish
Thanks mate. I like the sand bottom too.
Very nice
Cheers mate
Very nice well kept pond well done 👍
Cheers mate
Absolutely stunning mate! have done something similar but your idea of attaching pots to the side is definitely one I'm going to use! How do you stop the fish eating the lilies?
My fish don't seem to eat them on either pond. They dig around in pots. I try to put some bigger stones in pots but not restricted lilies growing.
@@alexisthisreal5488 amazing thanks for the reply. The ones you screw into the side. Do the pots not split and fall into the pond? Are they not too heavy with the stones in?
Nice. How cold it gets in winter?
Minus 6 at times. Heated though.
You can alleviate some of the burden on your biological filter by using a mechanical filter before the water goes into the Bog. You already have a Pump so its an easy upgrade. It will then prolong the amount of time before you need to clean the bog out.
I do have a little bit of mechanical filtration in pump. This was a bit of experiment to be honest to see how much the filter could handle. I'm gonna build a larger one in next few weeks with bottom drain out of rubbish bin. Thanks for advice.
Hello, what species od plants are in pond??
Water lilly, water Hawthorn, orange peel plant, water forget me not, canadian pondweed.
