may I suggest mosquito fish. if you put 10 or 15 in the pond they will reproduce quickly , they'll eat all the mosquito larva and they don't need a heater.
Medaka Ricefish do the same thing but make it look good.
I agree with mosquito fish! They share my ponds with goldfish and both are hardy in my area. They both reproduce readily and I no longer have any problems with mosquitoes!

I already have solar on my house, so I find myself questioning building a separate solar system for just the pond pump. Do you think having the pump only run during the day, like with a timer that only runs the pump when the suns up. Would that hurt the filters beneficial bacteria?

How does this save bills also your using a uv filter too run clean water into the bog filter so really it's not a proper bog filter

Where was the bit where you setup the bog filter?
I was sat waiting for the cost analysis versus mains. Considering most pond liners have 10 to 15 years guarantee it makes it worth it.
A quick point for your floating sprinklers. If you get a couple of weights from a fishing shop or even tie a stone to a bit of line that is the pond depth, that will hold the sprinklers in the middle
the problem with solar powered filter is the biological filtering will be messed up by running during day and drying out at night.
It doesn't dry out because the return is via an overflow so the barrel is always full of water. Nitrifying bacteria can manage without oxygen in flowing water for about 24 hours, what they can't cope with is drying out. That's why solar powered bog filters work.
put in a large pot with a plant or some floating plants the plants will absorb all the nutrients from water that lets algae grow
one problem you may experience with your design is if the pump goes out you may experience dirt back-syphoning from the bottom of the filter into the pond. You can either install a check valve on the inlet side, or simpler would be to bring a 90 degree fitting to bring a standpipe up, like you did with the outlet overflow, then have 2 90 degree fittings to send it back down to the bottom of the filter. If you drill a small hole near the top of this U shape pipe, but just below your water level, you can let air into the pipe to break the syphon.

@@thedadishere I only saw a drain/purge valve which doesn't address the back siphon through the pump. It's even on a separate bulkhead.
If you use a dc pump it is much more energy efficient than converting AC to DC.
Ive done the same thing on a bigger scale and it works great and runs 24/7

The battery is basically useless in this instance and really only functions as a buffer for the solar and voltage control. I would have suggested a better and cheaper choice would have been a DC 12v pump that can run directly off the solar panel. 8aH isn't going to last very long pumping water after the sun goes down
I have since upgraded the battery - but even 8aH lasts a hell of a lot longer than a DC connected pump with no battery when a cloud appears!

On the return pipe to the pond from the barrel, you might wanna increase the outlet pipe diameter 3fold and/or fit an overflow. That way when things go wrong (and they will) the water can still get back t'pond!
Nice setup! I guess the battery discharges as well, each night since it would still run the pump for a bit after solar power is no longer available.

White cloud mountain minnows would be cool in the pond if you want something low maintenance
Will a filter like this work for poultry with a drip line? I was going to make the drip line come from the bottom, but I need to have the outsource from near the top??? Thank you. I want to be able to top this off, and use this for their only water. It's only 10 quail.

I'm just planning a solar powered bog filter for a wild life pond. I think it might work quite well to use several smaller DC pumps, thereby eliminating the inverter, which I've read are normally only about 75% to 80% efficient unless you buy an expensive one.
The problem with solar panels is of course that they're only pointing at the sun optimally for a short section of the day - which is why I thought it might work better to have several smaller DC pumps feeding the bog filter, each with their own smaller solar panel, set to point at the sun at different times of the day. Again this is for a wildlife pond (no fish) - what do think?
Power over kill! Why not run a 12 volt DC pump with mppt charge controller? Combine with a simple timer = job done!

Tie a drawstring bag full of stones under the sprinklers to use as an anchor. This will stop the sprinklers floating to the sides.

Interesting watch the progress of your pond. I have always wanted an outdoor water vessel, I shall see how the solar panel works for you both.
Love the ingenuity of this. One thing you may find depending what you put in here, those small diameter pipes may clog fairly quickly at that low flow and block. reducing it to almost nothing limiting its effectiveness
Yes, maybe - but easy enough to swap in larger pipes if needed. Hopefully the clogging wont be an issue as regular flushing should keep everything clear
Was hoping for the bog setup, hoping to see what the pipes are for and how to stop water running back to the pond if solar pump stops working and emptying the bog filter…
Great timing, just finished digging out a much smaller pond. Might try this on a small scale with a nice plant pot.
Maybe they got rid of barrel because it was leaky 😂
Would love yo have my own pond but just don't have the knowledge or the guts to have one yet. Although I will be using your ideas when I do get one in many years

Any reason you did pump into the bottom and push up and not pump into the top and gravity feed down and the outlet at the bottom ? wouldnt that be easier to clean ? or is there a difference in power consumption?
Having the water rise up through the filter media has a couple of advantages - it allows a more even distribution of the water through the media, and the larger particles get trapped at the bottom making cleaning (through a flush from the bottom drain) easier.
Bought a pump anyway, solar panel, battery, solar charge controller, inverter etc etc …..probably about 15 years worth of electricity money for a pump 😂 by which time all that will need to be replaced. False economy

Luckily, maths isn't a matter of faith.
35w pump x 24hrs x 365days at £0.34 per Kwh = £104
So £200 investment paid for in 2 years - even if you allow for only running 12 hours, 4 years. If I add in UV, Air pump any other equipment, that brings down the ROI with no further expense.
But yeah - believe what you want and I'll put it in my big pile of things I don't care about.
What would be the battery difference to be able to run it 24 hours?
For this application I would need about 800w to run it for 24hr. So that would need a 70Ah battery to power that, but that would empty the battery so it's a case of how much can the 100w panel replace that charge during the day. So probably have to up the battery and the solar panels to cope. I'm doing some testing now with a larger battery - so watch this space!

Just get a Grant to put Solar on your roof (you can do upgrades to make it better later) and run a normal pump. Your whole Fish room and home could be run form the Sun that way😁
already have that - the house it powered by solar on a FIT, but bills still through the roof!

How did you decide on the barrel size compared to the pond size?
To be honest, I didn't - that just the size the barrel came in and luckily seems to be working out!

What fittings/ seals do you use for the barrel to prevent leaks?
5w or 11w UV if things get green, or HEAPS of plants :) or lots of shade plants (lillys)

Uv light will kill pea green water in a Heartbeat! Even when using a bog filter.

at the beginning of the video, you said you can do it without a battery. I just want mine to come on when it is sunny. I am hoping for a 12 v submersible pump that I can run directly from a solar panel. (200W ?) with a 5 foot lift. Does this sound feasible? I like your accent and your I'm not arguing shirt. I gotta get that for my husband. He has taken to 'mansplaining"

It is free power, I don't pay the sun for sending rays to my solar panel.
