I had the pleasure of watching Artis win ABA MVP with the Kentucky Colonels. There's a UA-cam video of the ABA/NBA All-Star game from Artis' MVP year. It's Artis vs Chamberlain. Wilt pounds away Artis' first shot attempt, then blocks his second. Next, Wilt dunks on Artis and retires to relaxon the bench. Toward the end of the game, Wilt returns to play. Artis is hand-checking Wilt on an in-bounds play, until Wilt jabs an arm and Artis goes flying off his feet. Artis said he always thought he was strong til he played Wilt!
Unfair comparison. Artis was young and thin at that point. 6 or 7 yrs later he was 280-290. He would have held his own with Wilt strength wise. Not as quick or athletic as wilt

He described it as being like a little kid hanging on his daddy's arm. He said Gilmore's arm didn't even move. The guy was slim, but still at 6'7" and or over 200 pounds.
Artis Gilmore was a monster, exactly! A big enough “Monster” to scare the shit out of Lakers Fans(Like myself) seeing how he would destroy the Lakers with or without Kareem Abdul Jabbar.
Wilt was incredibly strong. His strength and athletic ability were second to NONE in the pivot. Gilmore is second, after Wilt. Save that Shaq was more dominant and had incredible core strength. As great as Gilmore was, he did not have great manual dexterity. Nor did he go after the rebounds with the tenacity of Wilt and the GREAT Bill Russell. Gilmore did not work to develop his offensive arsenal like Kareem, Wilt and Jordan(AND Kobe, RIP). but this big man was one of the great centers of ALL time. Hats off to a legend!
Artis Gilmore is never mentioned in top 50, but they will mention Bob Pettit and George Mikan, who only scored 10,000 pts and 4,000 career rebs and he played in a weak NBA, with less than one black on ea team, but their fans don't want u to forget them. Bellamy, Thurmond and Gilmore all scored over 20,000 pts and all over 13,000 rebs
If you're going to limit yourself to 50 players all-time, Pettit and Mikan belong more than Gilmore. Simply because Mikan played in a NBA when it was a white boy social club and he still on scored only 10,000 pts and had 4,000 career rebs, meaning he didn't have the modern black center to compete against, his career was over before early 1950's, while the A Train scored over 20,000 pts with more than 15,000 reb, against th elikes of Kareem & Big E, which makes common sense.
