- Twenty years ago, David Prezant, M.D., professor of medicine at Einstein and chief medical officer of FDNY, provided triage care at Ground Zero as the September 11 terrorist attacks unfolded. That was just the beginning of his work with the thousands of first responders whose physical and mental health were forever changed by the attacks, ensuing rescue operations, and exposure to environmental toxins. In this documentary, Dr. Prezant and retired FDNY firefighters Capt. Al Fuentes and Lt. Terrence Jordan tell the poignant story of how their lives came together on that tragic day and the impact that Dr. Prezant’s research, advocacy, and treatment continues to have on the lives of 9/11 first responders.
Dr. Prezant is a clinical pulmonologist at Montefiore Health System and co-director of the World Trade Center Health Program. He was born and raised in the Bronx.

I am a family member of a retired FDNY Firefighter that died from ailments he had due to his response and recovery at WTC. My father died in 2014 at the time of WTC attacks he was in the Special Operations Command of the FDNY on a Detail. He worked that day and responded he also was part of the recovery efforts for most of the duration. I remember the day he was told by Dr Prezant that his "firefighting days were over" he retired in January 2002 due to COPD, he also was diagnosed with PTSD which later lead to him having heart problems. When he passed in 2014 I was asked to send his death certificate to the FDNY but before that I was not in the right mindset. When the medical examiner came to see my fathers body she had asked me if I wanted an autopsy. Again not in the right mindset I was saying to myself I didn't want my father to be cut open and all these other emotions going thru me so I declined it. This would lead to a barrage of red tape when the Medical Examiner finally gave us the Death Certificate it stated his primary cause of death as a Heart Attack, it also said the secondary cause of death was his COPD. I actually remember talking to Dr. Perzant on the phone the day after I buried my father and I was told if his COPD was as the primary cause instead of the heart attack he would have been considered a Line Of Duty Death. Then I was also told the only way to have this fixed was I would have to basically do a legal fight to prove my fathers COPD cause him to have a heart attack. To this day I said to myself why didn't I just get the autopsy I also believed my father had undiagnosed cancer he was very frail for his age he was 59. I lack any funds to pull some crazy legal battle with NYC and FDNY to get my father the recognition he rightly deserves I had even had thoughts of exhuming his body to test his bones for cancer however I wont put my family through that. I am pretty sure I am not the only one who got caught up in this I will always say my father died due to being sick from working at Ground Zero even if he isn't consider a LODD.
My prayers and condolences to you and your family, I thank you for everything you all have done.
