Thank you for posting this! I owned the Typical Male single when I was a kid and loved this song on the B-side. Never thought I'd find it again. Brings back some great memories. She did such an amazing version of this song. THANK YOU!
Spent my afternoon listening to different versions of this song. Ace of Base, Aswad and Tina Turner's. I love them all but I personally love Ace of Base's version most, since i grew up in the 90's.
I did the same. Ace of Base version is alright, and I never knew that Tina is the original artist. Tina makes this song so much stronger and emotional (yeah, big surprise!) To me Aswad is always the one and only version. It really hit me when came out. Anyway 80's music is always number one!
Introduced to this song by Ace of Base in 1993, then found out it was a cover of an Aswad song about 5 years later. Now a further 13 years later and I find out that that was a cover as well. I'm thinking of starting a blog for "songs that you didn't know were covers". A few months back I heard the original version of Vengaboy's "We're going to ibiza" ("I'm going to Barbados") which was a bit of a shocker as well.
The first version was the Tina Turner as B Side of Tipical Male single on 1986. Diane Warren (Her composer together to Albert Hammond) was disapoint about the treat record label (Capitol) gave to the song. Later in 1988 was sent to Bonnie Tyler for record it, but Sony Music dont promoted the album Hide Your Heart and never released this song as a single. Aswad and Ace Of Based did them version later.
Wow! I was TODAY years old when I found out this was the song that inspired Ace of Base's version (Which was one of my fave songs out of 1993's "The sign"). What can I say? Tina's voice and take on it is so powerful and touching that it made me well up at 1:20 am. Great discovery!
Fantastic rendition of her own song. She sounds incredibly relevant; her powerful, soulful voice is second to none. And you can actually understand the lyrics ;) .
Tina is phenomenal. But I still love the Ace of Base version. Early Tina is fantastic, and gets overlooked. I'm talking Ike and Tina timeframes. Some of the jammiest stuff ever....
Tina had some great B sides in the 80s. I love I Wrote a Letter and Keep Your Hands Off My Baby should have been on Private Dancer, and this should have been on Break Every Rule.
Record companies screwed her out of two hits: this record, Don't Turn Around, and 2002's The Game of Love w/Santana. She did revive and give a bridge to Bonnie Tyler's "The Best" so... win some, lose some.
I Knew this song was gave to tina 1st and I love the Ace of base version which is the only reason why I am here right now. But until today I never knew she actually did the song. Love this song both versions.
I was a teenager when Ace of Base made it big; shame nobody knew it was a cover. Tina Turner's vocals blow away the dance pop overproduced Ace of Base version.
This is A KILLER SONG. Someone dropped the ball on promoting this song. Very well written lyrics and music has a kick ass feel. Never heard this before now.
Hold on a tic, she was the FIRST major artist to record this? And Ace of Base's version came later? I had no idea!!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯 (also had no idea there were so many others who covered it!)

I am pretty sure that you will find that the cover version of 'Don't Turn Around' by Bonnie Tyler in 1988 (on her album 'Hide Your Heart') may have prompted Tina Turner to cover Bonnie Tyler's 'The Best' from the same album to have what is, arguably, Tina's biggest and most recognisable recording!! 'Save Up All Your Tears' was also cloned by Cher!
God this was a great version! Should had been a single. Always thought this was a Aswad song Ace of Base covered but she did it and Albert Hammond (dad of The Strokes Albert Hammond Jr) wrote it

RIP Tina Turner, thanks for sharing your immense talent to the world
Tina Turner- The original version was simply the best.
Thanks for the memories. 🌹
How did I never know Ace of Base's version was a cover??
This version is too good to have been wasted as a b-side.
I agree!
This shoulda been a hit for Tina Turner!

Neil Diamond also covered this song. His version is my favorite.
The Ace of Base version has a better arrangement.
