We have had about 8-10 Canon R5 users who have copies of the R5 that cannot get a tack-sharp image with any lens on the body, including RF's and Primes.
I know that in at least 2 cases, Canon support has fixed/repaired the issue and has diagnosed it as a "misaligned sensor mount," and in the other cases, much to the dismay of the users, Canon is saying there is nothing wrong with the cameras. I also know the service center in Costa Mesa, Ca, that has repaired one of them correctly (and it is now working fine).
I have known one of the photographers this has been affecting for about 10 years. He upgraded from a 5Dii. I have seen his images, and it is not fine. Imagine saving your money, buying your dream camera (the R5), ousting it under the Christmas Tree, finding it doesn't work, and sending it in to Canon who is now saying it's fine.
Canon needs to communicate better with its repair and service centers to ensure the issue is known and that we can help these users get their cameras working correctly.
Also, check your R5s as soon as you get them!

A clarification beyond "not able to get a sharp image" would be helpful. Unless the misalignment moves focus beyond infinite (which for most lenses would require a very large misalignment), it should still be possible to get any part of the picture in focus with a misaligned sensor. This was different when the AF module was separate from the sensor, but when the AF is done by the sensor itself, a misalignment should not make it impossible to achieve focus. A tilt of the sensor might tilt the focus plane, but the point of focus should still be sharp.
Even if the percentage is low - great that you collected the information and make it public!
Seems to have been effective on the past
Thanx Michael for the notation, it is a very respectful effort you are doing, you are a great faithfull reviewer, objectivity is something widely missed , or at leat, rare, nowadays!
In Sweden there where a nature photographer who bought an R5 and testet it with his 600mm F4 mkII and got unsharp images. He where among the first in Sweden to receive his camera. He return it to Canon and got a replacement. He was using the mechanical shutter and slow shutter speeds, like 1/10s... He testet another friends R5 and find the same thing, but not as bad. The answer from Canon was that the problem here where shutter shock. He tried the electronic first curtain mode (which I think is now fabric standard) and the electronic shutter and received razor sharp images. I have not noticed this and tried a lot, but I usually use electronic first curtain and electronic shutter. I received my camera in the middle of september I think my camera works good and get sharp images (as long as I use the correct technique). I use a Sigma 500 f4 lens, and that lens is super sharp...
LOL, cannon will ALWAYS say they no nothing about it. Remember the 70D focus issue. Tons of 70D's in for the same focus issue mine was in 3 separate times for it. Every time it was an unheard of problem. As well as the flash problem that affected the LARGE majority of 70D's. Even though they could repeat the problem on the majority of the 70D bodies it was an unknown problem.
I bought the 70d and returned it and switch to Nikon after I couldn’t get any image in focus
Dude I thought I was the only one!
Thank you Michael for the heads up. I am awaiting receipt of my R5 this week and now I know the first thing to do is check out the focus. I will be using my Canon EF 100mm macro f2.8L USM
my first R6 had exactly this problem, and fortunately was within the return period and was able to swap out. it's a bizzare and unsettling feeling when you shoot some fantastic shots, only to find in editing that none of them are critically sharp
It's so interesting that there is a group of people who would rather have this issue covered up. You make it clear that it is a very tiny fraction of cameras that have this misalignment problem, but that does not mollify these cretins. Thanks for doing this and I will certainly test mine immediately on arrival.
Canon usually likes to keep things on the down low if possible, even when there is a real issue. Its bad for sales. In the mean time, users who have spent big $$ are frustrated waiting for a solution.
@@MMavenCommon reaction by most of the companies. As a long time Nikon user I felt they were the worst. Anyway, my issue is not with companies, it's with the fan boys who want to suppress the kind of information you presented or to even personally attack the person presenting it.
@@MMaven sure it can hurt sales But having a problem like this highly publicized also leads many owners to suspect they have the problem when they don’t. That makes it even harder for them to service customers who truly do have a problem and it can be a years long headache for their service people. That is true for all industries.
@@markwillride Ive been doing this for 14 years now. Ive lost track of how many times an issue Ive made public was quickly fixed by the company. Fixed problems translate into happier customers.
@@markwillride And there is absolutely no question in my mind of my own R5's sharpness. When 18-20 users are saying they cannot get sharp images, something is wrong.
I always like your video. Your content is so unique that no other youtuber knows anything about. Thank you for spreading the knowledge so that we also will know.
Thank you Lev- I’ve recently changed my mind about the type of content I will make moving forward and want to focus more on helping/informing my subscribers
Great video...Maybe a image sample of how off the focus is. I bet many may have a R5 with not so much understanding of what tac sharp focus is to something being out of focus. Image comparison would be added help on top of this GREAT heads up! Thanks!!
We have a bunch of them posted in the group
My thoughts as well, also a r5 owner, have some lens softness but not all curious on seeing this issue in detail. Gets me paranoid 😣
@@MMaven I cant find any of theese in the group. Looked back into january. Can you link to something in the group? I‘m worried that I have this issue too!
@@MMaven I dont touch Facebook. Neither should anyone else.

Thanks for bringing this to the light. Have you heard about another issue with R5 and R6 regarding the frame around the sensor “melting” when you shoot backlight photos? A lot of reports from the users in Korea, but it seems like the other countries mostly brushed it off. Canon Korea is replacing the melted frames at a cost right now.
There is another reported issue with small gaps in the body frame as well. Feels like a lot of the early batches (which Korean photographers were able to get) had quality problems.. hopefully they correct it going forward.
I am a landscape photographer and have been using Canons for 6 years. My latest in 2000 was a 6d Markll. In July, I upgraded to a R5 and have noticed my landscape photos are way too soft. I use EF lenses with the converter. I looked at images I took in February with my 6D of downtown Los Angeles from miles away and you can see details from trees near me to the buildings in downtown. Yet my current images of the desert with the R5 just look shaky and soft.
I may have this issue too. I raised an email ticket to Canon last October 9 because all my pictures were not sharp. They did not give me any solution but I upgraded firmware and left with the impression that focusing was better. After comparing all pictures taken with the R5 against my previous Sony A7R3 I found that all my R5 pictures are out of focus for 100% crop. I have never had a single picture in sharp focus.
Sorry to hear that! You are not alone and we have had several other shooters also say they are having a similar issue. I have an R5 and almost everything coming out of it is razor sharp, so I hope this video helps canon realize there are a handful of users who have the issue. Thank you for chiming in.
@@MMaven Thank you Michael. Your videos are really helpful. I will immediately raise a service request to Canon. I'm also joining the Facebook group.
i think that's what I'm dealing with. I'm experiencing blurriness around the image except at one spot. I was wondering if it has something to do with my AF settings, but I can't put my finger on it. I've had the camera and lenses for much longer than 30 days, however.
I purchased in Pune, India... I hope i can get some positive outcome through the canon service centre where my seller has redirected me.
Thank you for your support.
I feel like I'm the only one with a certain issue: any focal length wider than 50mm sometimes won't allow me to focus further than 20 feet or so. I haven't seen anyone have the same issue as I, and after sending in my EF 24-70 twice and R5 body once to Canon Professional Services it still occasionally has this issue. I had it happen to me on two photoshoots in a row, both times at the same point in the shoot and my theory is when the body gets cold enough the IBIS seizes up and puts it to where the lens even at past-infinity won't let me focus past 20 feet.
i have same issue , called canon , they want me to send the camera to canon also to mention some people saying in body stabilisation has problem
But if you don't have any R Lens and can only use adapted EF lenses, will it show on those lenses?
Thankyou so much for all your guidance and inspiration.Hopefully we will continue to follow your New Life’s adventure on You Tube.Take care my Friend and Best wishes for the Future.J
I just had my R5 corrected "electronically" for this. Shipped it Virginia. I was shooting at f/8 on a 16-35 EF lens and half of the frame (left) was smudgy/soft.
Thank you a lot! Im buying the r5 and now I know what to look for. Since Im buying it on a local store, I must try one specific unit available before paying. Its an advantage of physical stores :)
Thanks for this. I have been having an issue with R5 and rf 70-200 combo. That lens works fine on my R6 though. My R5 will not get sharp pictures and will even freeze up. None of my other Rf or ef lenses have this issue
I have exactly the same problem. Bought my R5 on feb 18 this year and leave it in the box for two weeks. I am a motorsport shooter and my 5D4 was old enough to replace. But the first motorrace event in march this year i couldn't get one sharp image. I tried lots of setting, thought the fault was mine, but after six weeks a phoned Canon. Now the camera is with Canon official repair center (TechRepair) and they refused to replace the camera because i mentioned only after six weeks. So there solution was repairing. They decided to replace the whole sensor and IBIS system and because the camera was heated up without any reason on one ocaasion, it was bloody hot, they also replace the mainboard. I left the camera there on june 2 and i hope to get it back in the next week......i get a R5 to use because of my CPS Platinum membership...This service is so terribly bad from Canon......i will never trust that repaired R5 again.
And people complaining about the 90D....😉
I just bought, then returned an R5 when the prices dropped last week. The image quality was terrible. I couldn’t get critical focus, regardless of ISO, Shutter speed, IBIS /IS on or off. Every image was soft or just plain out of focus.
I also thought the noise was really bad on ISOs above 400!!! At ISO 1000, the images were unusable. I compared against images from my R6, and on both focus and noise, the R6 was in a totally different league. Even my old 5d Mark 2 image quality was head and shoulders better than the R5.
I hope my R5 was just a dud.
My R5 has been really good to me all this time. Of the ones having the issue there were in a very small minority. R5 is still a GREAT camera, just make sure you have a good one
It happened to me... Totally out of focus... They said they fixed it... Will see it later this week...
Please let us know what they say
I just received my Canon brand new R5 with brand new RF24-70 f2.8, , I’m not able to get any sharp image at all , I will return or replace with other R5. Hope they don’t change my restocking fee, thanks a lot for this great heads-up.
My $699 Canon M50 is sharper than my $3899 R5. I may end up selling the R5.
Maybe you got a faulty sensor too...
Same here! Already sent it in to Canon once. Anything past 15 feet or so, and it’s just a mushy mess. My old iPhone 7 takes better pics. Sending in again, but now I have to pay. If they don’t fix it this time around, I’m gonna get rid of it and go elsewhere……i mean, $3900 f’n dollars for a studio-only camera?
Omg me too and I think it’s not working
That's right, sell on your broken camera to some other sucker. Nice one.
Have the same issue with mine. Sending it today to get fixed.
*_Nice Info_*
I remember years ago the banding issues with EOS R,I still use my EOS R after so many years, and i am very happy with it,almost in 99% of situations banding is not an issue...but this ''Sensor Misalignment Issue'' that's pretty bad.
As always ... Looking out for his followers. Thank you because I'm ordering the R6 this week.
Thank you Mark! Its a very limited number we are seeing, maybe 10 out of thousands. Best wishes!

@@jacobcherry990 Is this the link you're looking for? This is MTM's R5/R6 group page. facebook.com/groups/295373685003326
Hello Michael. Great video and very nice of you. Im worried i have this problem. The link to the photos in your fb group does not work unfortunately. Can you provide another link to some examples?
I wish I had seen this a month ago...I bought my R6 and had a family member pass...a while after I finally had a chance to use the camera on a trip to Montana, and found out when I got home that I had zero sharp images....out of thousands of shots from Yellowstone, Tetons, badlands....super disappointing. Hopefully Canon repair center fixes it and I can take another trip soon.
Thank you! Finally an answer. Sending my R5 in after months of disappointment. Could this also cause excessive grain?
You are welcome. It wouldn't explain the grain, but this mightL ua-cam.com/video/5f9rTVqF46I/v-deo.html
@@MMaven Just got my R5 back from Canon. They confirmed the sensors were misaligned and fixed them. I had my R5 for 10 months through international photo tours frustrated that very few images came out at all. I wish I had seen your video 10 months ago. The merchant should have known and told all R5 he sold. I'm curious if the sensors on a 100mm macro lens with an R5 convertor might be the reason the autofocus isn't working. Your thoughts? Thanks again. It was a nightmare.
Were they able to fix the grain issue? I'm having focus and noise issue and wondering if yours was better after sending off for service?
Very helpful video! My R5 is fine, and my R6 is arriving tomorrow. Will definitely check
Great Tip.
I'm having this problem too. Can't get any sharp pictures They all seem just out of focus or a lot out of focus. I've had my R6 for 2 months. Thought i just needed to learn a new system give it time. But I've taken around 6k of pictures now trying every setting every focus point, different shutter speeds ,higher and lower ISO nothing seems to work. Im using a RF 24-105 stm kit lens and RF 600 MMM and a RF 50mm1.8. I also used a rf 100-500 for a day and it didn't help my problem. Just sent it back to canon hopefully it will get fixed. I did buy the Canon Care Pac. SOOOOOOOO
Well it's in the shop. Hopefully it will fix the problem. It's going to take at least 3 days so its more then just a tune up.
@@tmad1 Hope you got it fixed and sorted out. Did it end up being a misaligned sensor??
How did your repair go? I sent mine in and they just looked at it and updated the firmware- that was it.
Thanks for making this M. Hopefully we get it resolved
You bet buddy- I want your R5 working for you the way it should be.
Can we get a sample of what a "tack sharp" and "soft" images are? I can be super picky or super ease to the point that I won't even know what's what.
Which tech center did the repairs and is aware of the problem?
Can you recommend a test?
Michael, I sent my R5 back to Canon for repair and I just got it back and the focus is poor at best. It doesn't matter if I shoot Auto or manual, Raw or JPEG... Can you send me a email and I will send you a photo or two? I am sick. I cannot use the camera. I put on an 800mm and I can barely recognize the picture I just took.
What did Canon say? Have you joined our Facebook group it would be best to post images there so others could see
@@MMaven Where should I post them, Michael?
Joe, have your R5 has been fixed ? Having same problem all my photo absolutely out of focus with brand new R5 and RF24-70f2.8
Do you have any comparison pictures or videos? I and not a pro so sometimes I think its me and then I get the same problems on different lenses so I think it's the camera.
Thanks for the info Michael!
This sucks! Even it's only a neglible amount of R5 Cameras, speaken of the Volume being produced, it seems somehow Canon rushed the R5/R6 Duo into the Market, without perfect, proper Quality Control. I remember, my 5D had the Issue with the Mirror, which could get loose, and falling into the Mirrorbox, because Canon used a crappy Adhaesive, to mount it on the Mirrorplate, and into Spring 2009, even when the EOS 5D Mark II was being widely avialable (2008 Model), they made that Service Statement. And very early Serial Numbers (05xxxxxxx) had also Issues with the Sensor, that OPPF in front was being very Scratch-sensitive with Sensor Swaps....which i never use, i have since 2003 (Nikon D100, EOS 10D) only used a Dust, and -Rocket Blower, nothing else. Never wet-cleaned my Sensors from all my Gear.
Mark, the early serial numbers you are referring is for the Canon EOS R5 ?
@@AndreadePoloSaibanti Hi Andrea, nope of course, it was for the EOS 5D original, which came out into August/September 2005.
Think I will stick to my canon r with 600mm f11

Thank you for the info,i have the same isuue
I had this issue with my R6 and the fix was turning off the ibis

Sorry to hear- my link is in the description!
I am facing the similar problem... I am using EOS R5 with EF 100-400mm version 1... Not one image is sharp.
Try a different lens. The 100-400 v1 EF doesn’t have the resolving power for the sensor. Try a prime stopped down to f4
My camera was giving me tack sharp photos until about a few months ago (October) now it is hit and miss....mostly miss. I have had it since January 2021. I am upto date on my firmware.
Crap. I've had mine for longer and I've been having this problem. I thought it was just me, some form of user error. But I have not been able to get sharp results with the R5. My EOS R was vastly sharper.
Sorry to hear my friend. The R5 is incredibly sharp with good lenses. There is no question- hopefully bringing some awareness to this problem will help
Thanks for making this Bro.
You bet
You are awesome Michael
Thank you so much Michael. Your the best. :)
Or ? Maybe everyone shouldn't shoot every pic at 1.8 or 1.4 ?
I bought an R6 and some pictures are sharp and others are soft more like a 50/50 hit rate. Really disappointed on the camera. I submitted for an exchange. Hopefully the new one performs better.
Same! I don't know if it was just me or the camera. What lenses are you using for your photos?
@@auomauom I used the canon RF 35mm 1.8, 85mm F2, Sigma EF 135mm 1.8, EF 48mm 2.8 didn't matter the lens. The results were the same with 2 different bodies. My A7III delivered way better pictures than the R6. Which I sold after being disappointed.
Any idea on price to fix it ?

Hi, I own a R5 which I have purcheased last July. I am wondering if that batch might be affected by this issue. I own an RF 15-35mm 2,8 and a RF 70-200mm 2,8 lenses. How can I check exactly is my camera has this sensor misalignment syndrome? Sharpness sometimes might be a subjective matter....
Those are very sharp lenses. When you were taking pictures of non-moving subjects are the majority of them soft looking?
