  • How much do teachers make? 📚 For World Teachers' Day, we compiled all our interviews with teachers.
The average base pay for teachers is $26,193/year, or $16.43/hr. Interestingly, all of these interviews were filmed near our home base in the DMV (DC/MD/VA), and some of the highest-paying school systems exist in this area as well. All 3 top companies for teachers in the US are schools based in the DMV (Montgomery County Public Schools $47.33/hr, District of Columbia Public Schools $46.22/hr, and Prince George's County Public Schools $45.99/hr) Source listed below.

Yep. Northern Virginia (aka NoVA), which includes Arlington, might as well be its own state given how high the cost of living is there.
We're just south of Richmond and stayed in a vacation rental townhouse about 5 years ago. There was extremely little street parking (fortunately we could use the garage) with zero yard, no porch/patio, and it wasn't even an end unit. It was half the size of our house, but its Zillow estimate was more than 2.5 times that of our house!! Plus we have a half acre lot with trees, a driveway that can hold 4 cars without blocking anyone in, plus enough street curbage within our property boundary for another 3 cars.

I was listening to my idol, Martha Stewart, in an Interview on shop with the stars.
She was asked questions abt her mom. Her mom was a teacher who md very little money at $27,000 per yr. Martha is in her 80s.
In 2004, my starting salary in the State of Florida, with a BS & K-12 cert, was $27,500.
Teachers are getting their cheap cars repossessed in the parking lots of schools so they can pay their student loan debt.
When I returned in 2017, as a high qualified educator, my salary was $37,500 with an MS in reading edu (at a cost of $68K), gifted endorsement cost $2,000, & my ESOL endorsement cost $2,000.
In 2022, my salary was $47,500. Teachers in FL got a raise, spearheaded by the Governor, but the districts also decreased med benefits to 70/30 & the copays per yr went up to $7K & sht term disability went up to $200 per paycheck.
So much for the $10K increase.
Now, I have my PhD & I can expect to mk $57K per yr while my state college hubby mks $400K/yr.
Oh, the salary cap for teachers is $101K & for admin $151K.
We both work for the state. He teaches a single class per semester & has 17 grad students & 6 labs.
I have 37-students per period in a molded & rat I fested portable, in an upscale community, that gave me a lung disease.
The class sz teacher student ratio for core classes is 22:1.
My salary doesn't match my financial invesent in my education, which is by the way student loans.

Let me give you a solution to teacher shortages
-remove principals , superindents and all those administrators
    How does that solve everything:
    1) their huge pay checks can be divided on teachers of that school /district which will mean teachers will have a livable wage (its illogicql for administrators to get 300k with bonus each year while teachers who do thr heavy lifting get from 30k to 80k and only lucky ones reach 100k but with a compromise aka more classes and doing the job of two or three teachers )
2/ administrators have never been on the side of teachers they never help , they do practically nothing but be a burden on the teachers on top of the student's parents , administration is a source of stress for teachers, remove them will let teachers teach and educate and build relationships with their students without stress and without those administrators interfering and implementing policies and recommendations that are clearly theoretical which proves that they never stepped foot in a classroom or that they don't care
3/ teachers already do most of the administrative job in the school, so they can handle few tasks more as long as teachers number is adequate to cover the classes abd the work load and that is so doable when you remove the dead weight

Not true. Maybe if you are a first or second year teacher you can get away with jumping ship and taking a new job. But you can't easily do that after 10+ years in the profession without taking significant pay cuts. Willing to bet you are not an educator yourself. Every teacher I know works 8 hours a day in the building and countless hours unpaid time at home. We also get 4 days a year off that aren't holidays or unpaid winter or spring break. You are prohibited from using any of those days attached to a 3 day weekend, which is not the case in the private sector. Teachers continue to get abused because people have a false understanding thinking that since tax payer money goes to education they get to be armchair bosses towards teachers. Teacher salary is just one of many issues, but it's a compelling one. You wouldn't have 400-500,000 unfilled teacher vacancies if it was paid accordingly with similar educated professionals. Just to be licensed in my state you need 6 years of college, plus every 5 years you have to take more courses to renew your license. I believe the wages continue to lag behind because it is a female dominated profession that Americans do not value, same as social work. We need a nationwide teacher walkout to send a message.

Not even from the States butI love that your videos are all around NOVA and DC.. I used to live there and still visit it a lot. I get a rush every time I recognize a spot and the memories attached to it..and asking people these personal questions makes me feel like I know the community even better💙🤍
Plus ofc the educational value of actually knowing the answers.. Thank you))
