  • It's been a long time coming, but the Dream Reef Tank finally has its lights! For the first time in almost ever, I am going to run a hardcore reef tank without metal halides!
    I'll go over the lights, the mounting, the PAR levels and more in this episode.
    I am using 3x Philips Coral Care Gen 2 LED's and 4x Orphek OR3 reef blue supplement bars
    Shout out if you have any questions and as always, be sure to subscribe to the channel if you have not done so already!

    I think with the Kessils you will have hit the mark on the lighting. I have the Kessils and Orphek OR3 and the compliment each other well. The Phillips will do well in adding the fill lighting. I think the BRS tests came to the conclusion that if you tried to make the Phillips run at the AB+ color they would not grow sps since you have to turn them down so much. If you run them the way you intend you should have less of an issue, but with the Kessils and Orphek you will have the best mix.

    • @ParkersReef

      Yeah I think it should meet my needs perfectly. I’m not a modern “blue wash” reefer, so will suit me even more :)

    I agree on adding the Kessel’s. They are better than any other led fixture when it comes to shimmer.
    Your fixtures look great. I’m sure when you tidy it up as you say, it will look great in that crazy cool light lift you built.
    I often hear people make the comments about correcting the readings on the PAR meters when reading LED’s. I tend to believe that knowing your tanks PAR is a reference and not like measuring alk. You really only need to do it once and at colonies start to shadow and you measure it again, just use the same brand meter. The corals will aclimate anyway.

    • @ParkersReef
      @ParkersReef  3 роки тому

      Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Kessil will certainly add that gorgeous shimmer and I agree about getting a baseline PAR to refer back to 👍🏻

    Nice vid Parker, I couldn't help myself but play with the numbers, as the biggest virtue of LED is the energy savings. Lets compare MH to your LED setup. I'm running your LED full bore, as after seeing those PAR results, I reckon you'll need it if you're going SPS dominant.
    Start up cost:
    4 Cozumal Sun reflectors ($595AU) + 4 x 400W bulbs ($355AU) + 4 Lumatek ballasts ($880AU) = $1,830
    6 x Kessil A360X ($4800AU) + 3 x Philips Coral Care ($5400AU) + 4 x Orphek OR3 ($1280AU) = $11,480
    Running Cost:
    MH (1.76kWh x .28c) x 12hrs = $5.91/Day. Per year = $2,157/Year.
    LED (1.1kWh x .28c) x 12hrs = $3.70/Day Per year = $1,350/Year
    Power Saving = $880/Year.
    Not accounting for yearly bulb replacement, break even = 10.97 Years.
    Accounting for bulb replacement (4x400w MH bulbs), break even = 8.2 Years.
    In this scenario there are two questions I ask, does the LED achieve a better result than MH and do the savings stack up. As MH users, you and I know the cover, PAR and shimmer are fantastic out of the box. The big issue with LED is that you have to use more LED to solve problems. Orphek to solve the blue issue, Kessil to solve the shimmer ect. As for the economics, the savings will come, but they are a long way away. You have to assume that all this plastic lasts the distance, otherwise there are no savings.
    Personally, I think you should have spent the $1,830 on MH lights, and the other $9,650 on solar panels. Good luck.

    • @ParkersReef
      @ParkersReef  3 роки тому

      Thanks so much for taking the time to watch the video, do the math and comment! I'll give you my answers to your questions, but bare in mind - this are just my answers, each will have their own opinion!
      To make matters even more interesting, I already have reflectors and ballasts - so that cost would not have to be accounted for!
      OK firstly, when I ran MH before, I didn't run it on its own. I still had 6 Kessil A360x on a 6 foot tank to supplement it as well. Main reason being, you cant change the colour or intensity of MH and whilst I love the cool crisp white of MH during the day, I don't want them on first thing in the morning. Sure with 4, you could run 2 on and 2 off for sunrise/sunset but it would look a bit average. So you would have the expense (both purchase and running) of some supplement lighting as well. That does mean though that you wouldn't have to run the MH for 12 hours a day though, probably closer to 8. MH has a nice shimmer, but it aint kessil shimmer :D
      Next, not sure what bulbs you are running, but I only like Radium bulbs. They are closer to about $180au ea at the moment and are becoming incredibly difficult to get. I was getting quite concerned that bulb availability was going to be a problem in the future, to the point of pricing up a stockpile of 20 radium 400w bulbs (at a crazy price!) to last me 5 years, then tackle the problem again then.
      Bulb inconsistency is another issue, to get 4 exactly the same colour temperature, you could go through 5 or even 6 bulbs mixing and matching so it looks even. Less of a problem with Radium bulbs, but still happens.
      Heat is another factor you left out, there is a huge expense involved with cooling of both the tank and the house. We have already noticed a huge difference from not running the 2 400w halides in the lounge room, cant imagine adding 2 more.
      Lastly, the upfront cost of the fixtures is a expense that I personally wear, the quarterly electricity bills are a "family" expense. Keeping the family expenses as low as possible is a wise move to the longevity of your tank! We already have solar and that has been a life saver for the tank, offsetting the usage costs drastically.
      So I guess to wrap it up, the main reasons why to move away from MH was: Availability, consistency, heat and electricity usage. Do the Philips look as good? Yes, absolutely. Amazing spread like no other led I've ever seen.

    I can't believe I am saying this but it's a great setup. I love a really blue look but I feel that a whiter look is better for acros. On my lights I have a blue and a white channel and there is only a couple of hours where I run them both together - then I saw that Yoshi I think does the same.
    I think you can get 120 degree optics - I am sure Telegraham has done it so just right to him on Instagram (his preferred channel). I would also run orphek bars along the front edge of the tank angled towards the back. Greg Carrol said he did this to get SPS growing forwards towards you so it is a really amazing view when standing and looking in at the tank (at a similar angle to the lights).
    Every light has it's advantages and disadvantages - for me the Phillips biggest will probably last forever and you will be able to swap out the LEDs down the track. I wouldn't run a hood but for those who do it's probably the most cost effective light. The amount of whites I think is a good thing... I know it's not essential but I would like a broader spectrum with UV, Cyan, 740nm... I always thought I'd ask Orphek to do a custom light bar if I wanted those. BTW they are the same LEDs as the bigger Orphek and that should be mounted 14" so I would guess the same with the Bars.... but I would get some 120 degree lenses onto those ;)
    Happy Reefing mate - It's an incredible build!

    Nice, light setup. Enjoying your tank build so far.
    Are you happy with the light bleed from between the water and hood of the tank? Personally if the hood was 15mm lower it would stop the spill.

    • @ParkersReef
      @ParkersReef  3 роки тому

      Yeah that was not originally in the plan and was not actually the result prior to me adjusting the stand once the cabinets arrived. I ended up trading off the 8mm of light bleed at the waters surface to cover the silicon and part of the sand bed at the bottom. I can potentially lower the canopy down that distance (was my plan at the time) but I must admit, I actually like the little "window" into the tank now!
      With it all built in and being so super quiet, it's handy to be able to tell at a glance that the tank is running. I used to be able to hear the wave makers on my old setup and that put me at ease as I was leaving the house in the morning to go to work. This is the new equivalent for me :P
      If it ends up being annoying, I'll lower the canopy though :D

    As always, great video for inspiration! your dream tank is also most of the reefer's dream tank. The video is great for me, I am currently planning my peninsula tank and is also looking for a way to mount the electronic legs to my 96x36x27H tank. Most of the legs don't go longer than 72 inches. If setting up the legs on one side only, would you think it might be too heavy to hold 8 feet of length?

    • @ParkersReef
      @ParkersReef  2 роки тому

      Depending on what lights you're running, but yeah, I think that would test the strength of the structure reaching out 8 foot. The last thing you want is for it to fail and drop the lights in the tank, would make a huge mess....
      Perhaps there might be an option to have a cable support with a roller or something at the far end? It wouldn't be overly visible but could work well?
      Alternatively, I'd take the light frame to an engineer and see if they can't add some additional supports to make it withstand the overhang?

      @@ParkersReef some of them could, but i am scare for the rack to drop in the tank now that you have mentioned it. Since the canopy can open on both side, i will mount it centered on one side on the 80\20 and have it move up and down from there. No need to make too many mods since the mount can be flush to the canopy unlike the desk legs in my case.
