Piss Angel was the very first PxDx track/tune i've listened to when i first entered into true metal by 2004. honestly, i may not be that much into grindcore/hardcore but certainly this band gained our group's respect. and speaking of their moniker, i liked the way it sounded. Well the term "pig" could really mean a lot of perjorative terms. I first learned about this band way back 2001 and their name really caught my attention. I like listening to the mp3 track which also has a very long narrational outro. Pig Destroyer is truly GREAT. peace! = neoknivez

Scott Hull uses a Jackson custom shop soloist 7 string guitar with a single EMG 81 in the bridge (I think), mahogany body, through neck, ebony fretboard. For his rig he uses customized Crate GTX3500H Head including parts from a Ampeg vh-140. You can apparently get a similiar tone with a Crate GT3500H (350 watt head). You're right, he is fucking amazing. Have you heard many other guitar only grind bands ie Discordance Axis, Agents of Abhorrence?

Yeah, Scott Hull was in "40 More Reasons to Hate Us" I do believe. But Seth Putnam wrote most of the guitar work for that album so Scott's influence is barely heard. If you didn't know he is also in Agoraphobic Nosebleed and Japanese Torture Comedy Hour.
PD's lyrics are psychotic and awesome. I dont remember what cd it was that listened to but the lyrics were very very weird and dark and psychotic. thats why i like them

The intro riff is straight-up death metal, the second riff is sludge metal and basically sounds like a Melvins riff. The only thing really grindcore about this is the singing, which is basically hardcore punk shouting. Downtuning and thrash metal influences aren't required for grindcore. The best known grindcore bands are rather metallic, but there are plenty who just make grinding hardcore punk. Pig Destroyer's basically extreme metal with punk song structures.

I agree w earyn. i love deep, heavy riffs and blood curdling screams as next as the next person, but most bands out there don't seem like they put enough time into their work. they seem to lack a real creative spark. mastodon is a good example of what metal should sound like, especially their older shit.
Great song, but it doesn't fully work unless it's at the end of Prowler In The Yard. That's what gives it such lush, bloodslick power, the whole storyline of that album is fucking amazing.
To me, Pig Destroyer sound at their best when they're doing this slower/chuggier style. I'm down for blasts and stuff but it's this style that gets me hard.

The reason grind is what it is, is due to the "grinding" sound the guitars make. That is the main basis of grindcore.
