Totally agree with how minimalism makes life so much better and less stressful. I sold my house and car and donated almost everything else two years ago so I could travel full-time. It's a very liberating feeling not having/thinking about/worrying about stuff. I'm also currently in Kuala Lumpur and have been here for a month. It's definitely one of my favorite cities in the world and one that could be a future home base for when I'm in Southeast Asia. Thank you for all of your excellent videos!

You should do a video explaining how you went through the process of getting rid of decades of accumulated stuff to arrive at a backpack of clothes. It must have been an emotional experience. Also, you could discuss what are the challenges of living with so little - do old habits of consumerism creep into your mind from time to time, do you shun stores, do you have a continuous process of disposing old items to stay within the one backpack limit?

Minimalism is a game-changer for sure. It's an option that most people have, that can open a lot of doors. I completely agree and love the flexibility, mobility, and low stress of this lifestyle as well. I've been working seasonal jobs at national parks for about 6 months of the year, and starting to live the other half year overseas. Will be documenting on my channel. Hope to visit Kuala Lumpur in the next year or so. New sub here, enjoyed the video 👍

You hint at an important point: Letting go of things is one big step and letting go of habits and fears is another. The ghost rules past.
You never really own anything. Even property you rent from the government and you have no recourse if they don't honor the contract.
Letting go of stress is the ultimate goal.

@@RetireandGo I absolutely love traveling however i also enjoy a simple home life as well. I would like the best of both worlds too. To have a small home and garden in my home country in NZ and have the means to travel. However NZ has become the whore of very nefarious forces and is totally unaffordable now. So…selling up here in central Europe and I shall let my intuition guide me. Currently learning Spanish in preparation. 😅

Thank you for this video. You're awesome. Question: if flexible, mobile, and having sold everything, house included, talking about bureaucracy for business or government affairs, how do you deal with having an address States-side and Malaysian-side? I understand that in the US, PO Boxes can be rented, but in certain cases, PO Boxes are not accepted as valid addresses, how do you deal with that issue? (Assume that you have no one to help, no family, no friends, or that you would want to be 100% independent from requiring the help of someone else) Thank you. PS: The standard lens looks perfect to me, the very mild fish-eyed or I assume a wide angle lens blurs the edges, slightly rounds the picture (sphere-like), and IMO can be used to direct the focus on the center of the screen which could be particularly useful for emphasis but it also can be used to create an artistic and dynamic flow...maybe also creating a disorienting feel which, again, can be very useful for certain scenes. Each tool has its purpose, time and place that the artist, such as yourself, masters over time. Stay free! Cheers!

@@RetireandGo Much obliged! You're the Man! So, I take it as such: a family address for my physical, legal home address for official matters; a PO box for any other matter; and mail services to forward mail to wherever I am in the world... 2 add'l questions if I may: are there such things as PO Boxes in Malaysia or equivalent alternatives? My first trip was 3 months with a 2 week stay in each place. I learned a lot from doing that, then tried some other ways. Keep experimenting until you find what works the best for you. As for deciding on a home base, that's probably something that will happen organically as you travel around and find the place(s) that resonates with you. You don't have to decide early on. I was traveling long term before Covid. Averaged 18 countries a year with an inconspicuous 20L Uniqlo 3-way backpack. Packed my clothes, ThinkPad, tripod, and DSLR and still stayed below 7kg. Never checked in my bag ever and whenever flight employees saw my bag they just waived me over. I'm a woman and the stereotype is that women have a lot more to pack while traveling, but that's just rubbish. I think people just don't know how to pack properly, especially the gap year kids who think a 60L backpack is necessary for their round-the-world trip. The bag itself is already heavy with all their padding to make you comfortable wearing it, but if you pack light you won't need such a big bag in the first place.

If I didn't have to bring my laptop and camera equipment, I'd probably be able to use a 16L Fjallraven Kanken like other long term travelers I know. In the past I've created a excess of sensation through things... material possessions, starving for the next experience (item) or so it had seemed. Now I and he are letting go , selling off prize possessions, giving things away. Im struggling with a loss of self expression, not a battle I cannot win , Everything I own has been carefully curated, Buddha's for example sold a fountain I'd had for decades and literally felt pain, in that moment I also felt a enormous joy knowing the person who purchased it will love it. I know when I pass on all things will end, the freedom currently is stronger than all of our possessions- .Does anyone else struggle with letting go ? The ebb and flow hits hard . I'm only beginning this journey and I completely understand what you're going through. Every item I discard has a story behind it. I irrationally struggle with the thought that if I discard the item I also lose the story and the memory. Some days I can attack a closet of possessions with fury - they tie me down and fill my house with an unsightly mess. Those days are my most productive ... until I find something sentimental and I get stuck. I'm determined to get done but it's a process with ups and downs.

I definitely want to travel, with a backpack, with no cares or F*ks to give about what I leave behind in the US. @@RetireandGo There is a ton on UA-cam about it, but essentially, you walk through all of Spain from town to town so you don't need a tent or sleeping bag and stay in albergues, which are like hostels, but with a huge community aspect. It's fairly cheap, and one of the key elements of it is walking with as little weight as possible, so people go extremely minimalistic for it, like 10 pounds including the backpack, for 500 miles of walking. Also, the movie "The Way" with Martin Sheen and Emelio Esteves does a good job of putting a bit of Hollywood spin on it (but it's very pretty and moving). It is really high on my list for after this contract is up and I do the Early Retirement life.

Minimalism…you are speaking my language. USA expat in Asia 5 years and loving it. Still holding on to Car in storage. Final product to “Let Go”. I struggle with this decision. Keep or Let Go. Everything else is gone…It’s a Subaru I can turn into light travel car camper for visits back. Maybe I’ll flip a coin. Your Thoughts?
