The "SHOWER OF STARS" specials were staged live from CBS Television City in Hollywood, NOT Desilu (in 1956, their facilities were at Motion Picture Center- they didn't purchase RKO's studio until September 1957). All "live" TV programs were filmed with a special camera {converting the 30 frames per second screen image to a 24 frames per second film speed}- either 16 or 35mm- for delayed rebroadcast on stations unable to carry those programs "live"- and kept by the networks for legal purposes...Color "kinnies", though, cost twice as much to film as black and white ones, so the networks usually had "live" color programs preserved on black and white film; it's very rare for a color "kinnie" from the '50s to be found.

"Goodman had arranger Jimmy Mundy write a full band chart on Fralich in Swing, featuring Ziggy's trumpet and vocalist Martha Tilton, with lyrics added by Johnny Mercer. Renamed And the Angels Sing, it became a #1 hit in 1939, and further solidified Elman's name before the public.
The tunes included Fralich in Swing, which was Elman's Jewish version of a Romanian song called Der Shtiler Bulgar, and Zaggin' with Zig, which Bernardi composed

I was there, and for me it was unforgettable. I saw Benny Goodman and his band 8 times and once got to shake his hand. I was to young to see Martha Tilton with him, but she was one of the greats.

I love swing music since I was a 7 years old boy. I startet with Glenn Miller. My Mom loved his music. Today I am playing the same 1940th Tenor Sax like the great Tex Beneke did... Martha Tilton has been such a fantastic singer, with that cristal clear voice. I love it. And she really was a beautiful woman. I am sad, that we are loosing this great generation during the next 5 Years. I will miss really them.

Benjamin David Goodman passed away at the age of 77 on June 13th, 1986 and Martha Ellen Tilton died on December 8th, 2006 at 91...

Those were thd days when the stars were singin' and playin'. There's no artist like them nowadays.
When I was a girl I would listen to a Virginia college radio station- I believe it was 90.1 from Richmond. May be wrong about the exact station- but- I would listen to the Saturday Night Swing show. It featured old records and old radio programs. I will never forget hearing this song for the first time. And I will never forget how it made me feel. And I met my angel. My man. Zachary. We've been together for 9 years. And the angels still sing. I adored this woman's voice from the start and I still adore her today. I am now 39. Been many years since. Lets hope for many more to come ...dancin with my angel...

Fortunately for history, someone had the vision to film Martha & Ziggy while they were still here. The appreciation Martha shows Ziggy Elman as he goes into his famous solo is priceless & speaks volumes of the respect one artist had for the creator of this world famous song, Ziggy Elman (with help from Johnny Mercer). Martha was as classy as they come.
Martha Tilton. Great voice, great presence, great understanding of the song, and total class. Ziggy Elman. Brilliant trumpeter, and a brilliant musician (they are not the same). The combination is priceless. A timeless gem. Many thanks for posting this!
Ziggy's memorable trumpet solo had that distinctly bittersweet yet joyous Jewish/Klezmer flavor.
I was so surprised to find out Marha didn't pass away until 2006. I'm sure heaven awaits her. she was 91.

Concerning which, I just posted a comment: Wasn't that a beautiful arrangement? For those (like Sinatra) who care to remember -- that lovely orchestration was from “Glenn Osser” - not well known when he died 5 years ago, age 99. But good enough to have a respectable Wiki entry which says in part:
Abraham "Glenn" Osser (August 28, 1914 - April 29, 2014) was an American musician, musical arranger, orchestra leader, and songwriter . . . born in Munising, Michigan, the child of Russian-Jewish immigrants.
He studied piano, violin, saxophone and clarinet in high school and went on to study music at the University of Michigan, beginning in music education and switching to music theory. After graduating in 1935 he worked with a college dance band and, on advice from the band leader, moved to New York City [where he] began arranging [and] got to work with Benny Goodman on his radio program, and (although he was not officially credited) wrote the arrangement of Martha Tilton's recording of "And the Angels Sing" with the Goodman orchestra.

You are beautiful and gorgeous and it's a perfect singer I never seen her years ago to Benny Goodman band or is that those days are going by dancing and that was a real dancing and the real clubs sorry to see it all gone
I've heard her do four versions of it and they are all just as beautiful.

Thanks for the keen observation and comment. I’m definitely no expert on Kinescope prints. The information I received with this recording specified it was, that. It is true this is one of the better/best looking ones, if it is one. My burning question is this (yes I believe it really did broadcast live in color in 1956): If not Kinescope what would the source be? Some kind of early videotape feed, or live black/white film, or what?

I am old enough to have seen her on TV or heard her on radio in the 50's and 60's but the only song I can vaguely remember is this one. The big bands sound better each time I hear them now; especially with Liltin' Miss Tilton singing. I am really upset with myself for not attending the Tilton and Goodman 40th anniversary Carnegie Hall Concert in 1978.
To date this is quite possibly my favorite of all songs! I don't believe I've heard a "bad" version of it yet. But that being said Martha's 1939 version with the Benny Goodman Band is my favorite vocal version and The Tommy Dorsey band version with Ziggy on trumpet is my favorite instrumental version. And hearing Martha & Ziggy together for this version is great! Thanks for a superior post!
The trumpet solo that "takes away from the song" was by the great Ziggy Elman who co-wote the song with Johnny Mercer. I love MT also, but his trumpet solo only adds to the song.

I always thought that Miss Tilton's original recording of And The Angels Sing was perfect. It's a legendary song, and her singing had a reverential, legendary sound. She deserved more credit than Benny was ever willing to hand out, for its success in 1939. Thank you for this posting. I remember watching her as a teen in the fifties, not quite as perfect, but close enough.
Yes the original was Perfect. Thanks for the great comment. Benny didn't appear to appreciate many of his girl singers.
Except for Helen Ward. They had an affair, and almost got married.
@@fromthesidelines According to a friend of mine, who KNOWS Big Band; Benny made a habit of 'approaching' his female leads. That may account for the short stints of many, including Miss Tilton.

Louise Tobin was married to Harry James in 1939- and I believe Benny had no liasons with her after she replaced Martha Tilton that spring. But her tenure as his 'girl vocalist' was VERY brief.

broadcast. Desilu produced these shows for the Chrysler Corporation and were filmed before a studio audience in color. Hosted by William Lundigan and Jack Benny, but Red Skelton hosted some of them too with co-host Ethel Merman.
Please do upload any other "Shower of Stars". in your collection. True treasures of bygone times.

"Martha had many exciting experiences while singing with Goodman. When Benny was at the Paramount in New York a couple of enthusiasts jumped on the stage and started dancing. This is the first known instance of such exhibitionism. The incident was unforgettable because the boy who was dancing accidentally kicked Martha and she collapsed on the stage."

If a copy of videotape how did it survive being erased/reused?
Is it plausible that it wasn’t broadcast live, although advertised and aired as such, that it was filmed in color and later broadcast from film on schedule, and this is a copy of a b/w print (or reduction print) of an original color film?
Any clarifications or ideas are always welcome.

I believe you are correct: There is no bad version of MT singing And The Angels Sing. Each version has its unique qualities. The 1939 Camel Caravan version has a quality like no other; the 1939 Victor copy is also unique. Although many may be looking for a more polished and professional version and that would have to be the 1955 Capitol LP I believe it is spotless! My preference is the 1939 Camel Caravan version which I am very fond of. Thanks for commenting.

Ah, Mr. Altman, you ought to know that the song is based on Der Shtiler Bulgar, and Elman is playing the song as it is played traditionally. If you prefer Swing to Frailach, fine, but respect where this tune is coming from. BTW, it was a #1 hit.

Are you sure this was 1956?, Ziggy was not a well man and Mannie Klein had subbed for him in the BG story.
Yes the year was correct, many independent sources confirm, but Ziggy was lip synching for this Shower of Stars Show. They all put on a pretty good act. Although not public record I have always suspected the whole soundtrack after Skelton's lines was taken from a 1955 recording.

I hoped he had regained his ability to play. He fluffed at 2:12. Regarding the use of videotape, the first Ampexes were used for network news broadcasts. As Barry I. Grauman said, the film scratches tell the story. Unfortunately, the sound has significant flutter. There are technically better kinescopes from this era.
Good lord how far America has fallen today.
