I've had my 4XE for 1-1/2 years and love it! I wasn't an EV/Hybrid guy until I drove it. My commute is 6 miles each way so I run 90% electric and only buy gas every 4-6 weeks. But the real thrill is the power!! So much fun!

Well done. A member of my EV club has a coworker who bought the same vehicle but never charges it. Apparently there was some financial incentive to by the plug in hybrid making it (with tax rebate) a better deal than the ICE. Rather than embrace the opportunity, he’s just getting worse gas mileage lugging around a heavy battery and motor for no reason. And I’m concerned with current tax credits, this situation may multiply. Thank you for making the perfect use case work. You’ve restored my confidence some.

I had a BEV for 18 months. The instant torque was great and it was a blast to drive. We take long road trips and decided to switch to a PHEV because of the added time and stress involved with charging on the road.

Curious if you would have felt the same on the supercharger network

    • @anthonyp6462
      @anthonyp6462 Рік тому +1

I, too, had a BEV for 24 months. I ditched the whole BEV concept because I didn't like the range anxiety or having to plan trips around charging networks. I also go camping and to Mexico regularly AND wheeling, so no BEV could do all that. What really sold me on a PHEV was when my buddies and I decided to go to Vegas on a whim on a Friday afternoon. I just took off with about 80% charge from my work and headed up the 15. My ICE buddies did the same. My Tesla friend only charged once a week at a supercharger since he lived in an apartment. His car was about 20%. So, he had to find a supercharger and wait to charge. I was at Barstow by the time he was done charging and on the road. His model 3 standard range had to charge again in Barstow. By the time he got to Vegas, we finished our buffet, did some gambling and were on our third round of drinks. We gave him the usual hard time about being a fan boy and he said if he only knew, he would have gone to work with a full charge. Well, that's the rub, isn't it? If you're BEV, there's no real spontaneity in trip planning. We're thinking of driving to Ensenda next weekend and he's going to rent an ICE car since he doesn't know what the supercharger network is in Baja. Uh, yeah...spend $$$ on a BEV, be a slave to a charger, plan trips around charging stations, and ultimately rent an ICE car for long road trips. PHEV is the way to go for now. I can plug in anywhere there's 110/120 or with a J1772. I have an on board battery charger through my ICE engine, and depending on the length of my drive, can recharge 60-80% and use those electrons to increase my ICE mileage. But most importantly, I'm still driving a Wrangler Rubicon and I can go where no BEV can, at least for now, without having to worry about my battery level. 😅

I agree. Being near the west coast and not in California, there really aren't many chargers, so it's really not practical to drive an electric vehicle. Hybrids just make the most sense, because you don't have a massive battery pack that battery electric vehicles have, and it gets much better fuel economy than your typical gasoline car, with less emissions than a typical gasoline car, and because there is a fuel tank, it's much easier to fill it up on the fly.

It's got a fun amount of power and can easily run on gas for the rare extended drive. I ask for updates and all they tell me is that it is going as planned, I highly doubt that. The two realls, one is for coolant leak and the other for engine shutdown when you are driving. (which I have not experienced). As far as ownership, hate the vehicle. The engine is extremely noisy, sounds like a lawnmower, cabin noise is horrible above 45mph. Plug in not worth the tax credit, should have gotten the 6 cyl. The 4xe is just a compliance car to please the government requirements. Jeep needs more time to perfect there electrifcation and not put together a piece of junk.

My father and I have had a bronco on order from 2021. We recently took our 2005 grand Cherokee to a jeep dealer to look at wranglers and test drove the Willy’s 4xe. We ended up leaving with it! We were surprised how beastly the Willy’s is in person (looks as tall as the Sasquatch for what it’s worth) and we’re impressed with how it drove. Just a side note the led taillights come with a blind spot warning package around 1200-1300. You can buy the taillights from mopar and it’s an easy install if you decide to buy one without them. Also the keyless entry and garage opener are around 700 if you want that as well. It’s really been a lot of fun we are in a hilly area and are getting around 28mpg avg and around 21 gas only mpg. The 2005 grand Cherokee got 10.5 mpg! Around 13 city and 15 highway mpg. & of course you can just run electric for shorter commutes and extend the combined avg mpg.

While this Jeep isn't for everyone, it works great for me. I had a 2018 JLU Sport S, lifted with 35's and 6spd manual. I got between 12 and 17 mpg. In 2021, my local Nissan dealer had a killer lease on a Leaf SV with 0 down that actually cost less to own and operate per week than the price of gas to fill up my Jeep every week. So I was net 0 extra out of my pocket. The limited 150 mile range left me only using the BEV for local drives and the one time I took it on a drive over 100 highway miles, the range dropped like a stone (the Leaf isn't an efficient highway cruiser since re-gen doesn't really help if there's no stop and go traffic) and I had to stop at 30% charge since I was afraid I'd run out of electrons. That was the most stressful drive I've had short of a blizzard I drove through. So after a couple of model years, I got a '23 Rubi 4xe and combined the best of both worlds. I charge at home, drive about 12 miles to work, level 1 charge at work and then drive home all on electrons. After 6 weeks of driving, my first tank of gas was still at a little less than half (and that included a 40 mile drive home from the dealer with 0% charge on the battery pack). I was averaging about 36 mpg. My trip to Vegas had me at about 26 mpg, but I never had to worry about charging or stopping to charge. I still get the spontaneity of driving when and where I want to with the option to go EV when I want to. Sure, the tech is still new and the range isn't that great. But as battery tech improves, I'm sure there will be an aftermarket option to swap out the 17kw pack to a more robust one and an option to swap out the onboard charger. Even when the infrastructure improves where BEV's can charge in 5 minutes or less with ultra high voltage chargers and super cap battery packs, legacy BEV's, like current Teslas and Rivians, won't be able to utilize that capability and will still be a slave to the current charging rates. PHEV's in general, not just the Wrangler, are the only option for stress free driving. And that's only for driving in the US. If you ever have to drive north or south of the border, you will have a harder time. Just look at Roman's video of when he drove to Alaska in the Ford Lightning. It made for good viewing, but I'd never take a trip like that in a BEV.

The jury on Kia still is out, the EV system should be very reliable while the power seats, infotainment, and switches could potentially be issues down the road; but you have that 10 year warranty. And the latest Consumer Reports recommends the EV6. But the Niro, also by Kia has had many electrical gremlins. Even Toyota has had some reliability glitches with my second generation Prius where there was a major recall on the cooling system for the inverter and the dealership repair was poorly done requiring me to have my car towed after I got the red triangle of death warning. It turned out to be a loose cable. I even had problems with the High Intensity Discharge headlights with them failing intermittently, and driving in the mountains I had overheating issues with the battery on a 75 degree day. Horrible miles per kwh because it's carrying an ICE engine and horrible MPG (if you don't plug in) because your carrying a battery and electric motors, also the best part of an electric car is the rapid quiet acceleration; plug in hybrids are not made for that; they can be fast but the ICE engine kicks in and starts screaming at acceleration. Also, because the electric drive train was so inefficient and the battery size is a third of a full EV she was constantly plugging in to try to get as many electric miles as possible vs a full EV you really need to plug in every few days or overnight. Price of a plug in hybrid is not much better than a full EV. My son has a Maverick (non-plug in hybrid) and we all love that little truck.

My last vehicle in the true off-road world was a ZR2 S10 and I never pushed that to it's limit and currently a Latitude Renegade has gotten me some places I didn't think it could go, so why would I need the last 20 years of off-road advancements? Some nice tires and at least 9 inches of factory clearance will get me a long way considering my off-road use is more about letting me personally do more things than it is about playing with my vehicle. The deeper I can get into the woods, the more hunting and fishing and hiking opportunities open up, you know, that kind of deal.
In this same note, I think a more meaningful Anniversary package for the Rubicon would have been offering it with the 31 inch tires the OG Rubicon's came with and maybe some retro paint options on 2doors. GMs ZR2 line was a direct response to those early Rubicon's, and the reason the ZR2 was only offered on the S10 and S10 Blazer platforms was because a full size like the current Sliverado ZR2 could never compete with the mountain goat nature of those early 2000s Jeeps, which much like "Soft-Roaders" today where more about going around things and picking good lines than crushing objects and critical thought under massive tires. But I suppose that doesn't sell and won't have the same profit margin.
Edit: for some reason Autocorrect decided "Rubicons" would just be possessive rather than plural. I also now realize that 31s would be a direct downgrade over even basic Sport trim wranglers, which should give people an idea of how much the Wrangler has really ballooned in the last 20 years.

If you're going to buy a jeep, in my opinion this is the one to buy. Best of both worlds. You can go full EV if you want and then take it on trips without all of the charging drama.
My old coworker had an EV car and his argument against hybrids was that when you're just commuting you're carrying around a gas motor system you're not using. To that I say in a daily commute with an EV you're carrying around a bunch of batteries you're not using.

It’s truly sad to see what Jeep has become. I’ve owned 6 wranglers over the years and will never own another one. Jeep has completely forgotten the fan base that got them to this point. You basically have to be rich to own a wrangler these days between the vehicle price and the maintenance issues. Gone are the days where a average person can buy a wrangler and take their families out on adventures.

As a Chevy Volt owner, I think this falls a little short of the ‘sweet spot’. I get ~40 miles of all electric range and I wish that were even slightly higher. I wish this had 60-100 miles of electric range and then had a smaller gas tank. Since those gas tanks fill up in 2 minutes it’s not nearly as big a deal to have to stop once or twice more on a longer trip, but those extra 40 miles could really make a difference in a bigger city or especially on an off road trail where this will chew through battery.

I've said this for years, if car makers designed all their new 200+ mile electrics with this same gas generator - there would never be range anxiety. And BTW, I bought my Volt 7 years ago (not one problem). It had a sticker price of 44k. I bought it used with 22k miles on it for 12.5k.

This is exactly what we need more of. If you are really serious about the environment, developing more hybrid vehicles will do far more than full ev’s with the current tech. An engineer from Toyota just did a study showing this. Not to mention this is just far more practical for most. If you could buy a full ev for $20k to have just for commuting and have a 2nd gas car for road trips it would be a different story, but at current pricing most of us can’t afford 2 vehicles. This is the solution. Also- remember a few days ago’s video on the Rivian vampire loss resulting in a 25mpge equivalent? When you factor in the Lithium production for the Rivian this Jeep walks all over Rivian from a true environmental standpoint.
