    The journalist would write about wrestling being fake but really the only people who would read it would be upper/upper middle class white people in the cities. Middle to poor people in the country and cities had no idea wrestling was a work and especially immigrants who couldn’t even read had no idea so that’s why most of the famous wrestlers back then where of ethnic descent or had gimmicks that mostly appealed to poor-ish people. It wasn’t until the late 80s and especially the mid 90s when communication between great distances became common that people finally started getting wise that it was all a work. I grew up in the late 80s through the 90s in southern America and I remember all the males in my family thought WWf/WWE was fake but Memphis wrestling and the NWA was real. Just a little simplified history for anyone who wanted to know

      Well he kinda mixed a few things up. The fights with the plants at the carnival were mostly percieved as real, as people had literally 0 idea of what effective fighting looks like and the fights weren't ment to be entertaining, they were still performed by knowledgable catch wrestlers with a surprising result in the end. Of course there could have been isolated incedences were the performance was not as believable and a few people might have called the guys out, but only when wrestling split from the circus and started being portrayed more like a play in front of an audience and local TV stations with the first gimmick personalities being introduced people slowly figured out that something is up and it's not 100% real. That was when this article was written and people really did not care

    • @KingOfWinter
      @KingOfWinter Рік тому +4

      dbgrfdg Yeah at first it was 100% real and listening to what people had to go through training wise is scary since they had to be strong/skilled enough to take on all challengers and they better not lose and make the circus look bad or have to pay the money they advertised but almost assuredly didn’t have lol. They say amateur wrestlers decided to make a professional league so they could all get paid after they got older and couldn’t really compete with the stricter rules and younger guys of the Amateurs. But they would run into a couple problems the matches would take forever to end there are some on record lasting 5+ hours with intermissions and it was driving away business cause you can’t take bets on something you don’t want to stay and watch lol. Also the top guys would get hurt and have to be out a year or more recovering which would then hurt everyone’s bottom dollar. And a minor problem was you can’t control the outcomes which would sometimes leave the wrestler and promoter looking dumb when someone in the crowd did out wrestle them (a plant from another promoter usually). So a lot of the top guys of the time got together and started laying out fun short exciting matches where they controlled the outcome, no one got hurt and their marks stayed watched and betted on the matches win-win for everyone. But reporters who traveled around to the different matches reporting on them started to get wise to them and started reporting it was phoney. But poor people and immigrants didn’t read the papers so the sport kinda just went in that direction. The whole “people didn’t know what a fight looked liked” is true about some but the clever thing about wrestling is it’s rules (that are no longer really used unless needed in a modern match lol) but you could use a closed fist for example because if you’ve been in a fight a closed fist only takes 2-3 good punches to take you out but if you HAVE to use a open palm well maybe that has a different effect. There are a punch of little clever Nuances in the rules system to explain why it didn’t look like a fight you would see on the streets for people who had seen real fights. Even this is still very simplified history. Jim Cornette has a podcast that goes way deeper then I ever could on this subject if anyone reads this novel and wants to learn more.

    Original catch wrestlers were legitimate CRIPPLERS. They could blow out an opponents knee, break vertebrae, and dislocate elbows in seconds. 'Worked' wrestling came about because they needed to be able to have competitive but SAFER matches with each other with no one going to the hospital afterwards. Wrestling became a 'work' out of necessity not design.

    • @romxxii
      @romxxii Рік тому +7

      see the thing is, this never really changed. Even today, WWE's roster sports a healthy amount of former amateur wrestlers. And I'm not just talking about Div I cream of the crop like Brock Lesnar or Olympians like Kurt Angle or Chad Gable. You've even got some upper midcard talent like Dolph Ziggler (AKA former Kent State champion Nick Nemeth). Hell, all three of the New Day are former high school wrestlers.
      I wouldn't even push my luck against the guys who didn't have an amateur wrestling background, as some of them can manhandle anyone who doesn't have proper combat training. Go look up the video of Triple H taking down a rabid fan who jumped the fence and attacked Stone Cold Steve Austin.

    • @MrJm323
      @MrJm323 Рік тому

      No, this argument doesn't work. Because amateur freestyle wrestling usually doesn't result in severe injuries. The referees have actual authority in actual sports; and it's one of their principal jobs to enforce rules to prevent the serious injury of the athletes. When two genuine competitive athletes come together, the conclusion of the match is not foreordained -- it's not "fixed" (and, if it is fixed, it is no longer "sport").
      'Worked' wrestling, as you put it, is simply not wrestling. If it's choreographed and not genuinely competitive, then it is staged entertainment -- not sport or real athleticism.
      Circus clowning, stunt performing, vaudeville performing (etc.) isn't sport. No matter the "athleticism" required, they are entertaining performers rather than genuine athletes.
      Professionalism -- the pursuit of high stakes prizes -- puts pressure on any sport. It's easy for a particular sport to degenerate into choreographed physical theater and match-fixing. It takes effort on the part of baseball commissioners and the heads of boxing commissions to keep the professional leagues of their sporting disciplines from taking the road that professional catch wrestling did around the 1920s. Essentially the carnival organizers took over the organization of "professional wrestling", and knew what to do with it to keep the money rolling in.
      It's not deserving of the name "wrestling" or "sport" now.

    Wrestling didn't really exist in Italy. But then in the early 2000s MTV Italia started broadcasting the WWE and everyone lost their freaking MINDS. It was the first time we were exposed to American "culture" (other than mainstream Hollywood movies). They tried following that up with stuff like Monster Trucks but it never really worked as well as the WWE did.
    Every single boy in my school was OBSESSED with American wrestlers, the amount of money parents spent on buying merch for their kids was insane. Pencil cases, backpacks, notebooks, you name it. John Cena, Eddie Guerrero, The Undertaker and Hulk Hogan were the most famous. My cousin Tommaso tried several times doing Eddie Guerrero's "frog slam" move on my 4 year old sister. WWEs struggle is, that they cater to these big investors who love to see FOX and Saudi deals and they hate controversy, especially in this era. (I mean Saudi itself is a huge controversy, but 350mill is 350mil, so what you gonna do)
    They are all about branding and bloating their numbers by any means. But the storylines themselves are only an afterthought.
    For example, the UA-cam numbers come mostly from India, The watchtime on Peacock comes from fewer people but doesn't go down much, because they make their PPVs longer and for example WrestleMania is now 2 days instead of one.
    They were lucky that Fox and other TV stations were competing for live sports/programming, especially in the pandemic era. That is also the reason that RAW is 3 hours long. In return though, the blandness, bad stories, long exhausting monotone shows, all this is driving away fans and many wrestling fans like me have predicted a long time ago that it is all comes crumbling down eventually when too many viewers turn off, but they keep going for a surprising long time at this point. And with Roman Reigns gaining popularity, the product getting slightly better since Vince is no longer in control, AEW being somewhat of a competetion forcing WWE to be more creative, stuff could actually become more popular now.
    Talking about AEW, there seems to be a need for more Wrestling of TV, since they are doing fine as well and Japanese promotions also rising in popularity here in the US. 5 years ago we only had WWE

    That was a fun little video essay. It should be mentioned about the "Shoot Wrestling Days", that a few other reasons why it ended were that it wasn´t exactly audience friendly, since matches were either very short or very long and very boring, since it would usually involve little actual action, once one of them got the other into a submission hold. Not to mention that it became harder and harder to find new wrestlers, since nearly all of them came in with almost no wrestling experience and many of them came out of their first matches with career ending injuries, matches that they had earned practically nothing for participating in.
    It also would have seemed fair, if Roddy Piper had been mentioned along with Hulk Hogan, since not only wouldn´t Hogan have become as big as he did without Roddy. It was also Roddy, who was the first wrestling star who became known for being the star of a mainstream movie in "They Live", which brought a lot of new attention to the then WWF as well in the 80´s, whereas Hogan (with the exception of his small part in "Rocky III" and starring in the WWF´s own disaster of a movie "No Holds Barred") didn´t get into that part of it until the 90´s.

    You’ve got it wrong with the origin of catch wresting and how the match went on to be fixed. At first there was some legit catch wrestling fights. But the thing is that often the opponent would end up seriously hurt or maimed ( even today, a lot of catch wrestling holds are forbidden in grappling matches because the risk of injury is too big). And that wasn’t good for business. No fights, no money. So they decided to go with a fixed fight format so they could fight several times a week and make bank.

    Just want to clarify one thing... You said Vince & co. had the rare ability to spot future megastar crossover talent like Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold, The Rock, John Cena, Brock Lesnar, Dave Bautista, etc.
    Not true. No one who's ever succeeded at the highest levels of the WWE did so because they were overlooked gems only Vince could see.
    Those guys became household global icons because the system Vince operates is so complex and grueling that the people who rise to the top can go on to have success in other ventures such as Hollywood, or in Brock Lesnar's case, legitimate pro sports like the NFL & UFC.
    Vince isn't finding the diamonds in the rough. He's gathering the coal to feed his pressure cooker which will eventually create the diamonds. You got to have it ALL in that industry. You got to have the look; the personality; networking and politicking skills; be inexhaustible; and ambitious.
    Don't overlook the politicking abilities either. We've actually seen Jesse Ventura and Kane become elected public office holders after retiring from WWE also. It isn't just movie stars and prize fighters. If you can rise to the top of the classical WWE machine,* you can make it in just about anything. Hell, Chris Jericho went on to become a rock star, author, and podcaster for Chrissakes!
    *I say "classical WWE machine" because they've gone away from it this past decade after Vince got tired of his biggest stars like The Rock, John Cena, Dave Bautista, and Brock Lesnar walking away to other industries for more rewards than he can provide. Now, WWE kneecaps everyone with stop-start pushes, redundant storylines, surprise roll-ups instead of finishing moves, and being fed to Roman Reigns to stop everyone's momentum dead in it's tracks

      i agree that the examples you have given are very true, i will add that working and traveling as much as they were would also play a factor. The pressure of constantly being that busy must be massive and something that only a handful of people ever really experience. To keep that up for 10/30 years would make just about any job or career after that feel easy or at least easier in comparison.
      If you watch interviews of the the undertaker, stone cold or any superstar, they were very obviously extremely passionate and proud to do what they did and if you can carry that same passion and pride over to something else there is a huge chance of success.

    Casual mistake..
    but WWE isn’t a sport, It’s a promotion/brand. There’s many of them like WWE, AEW, ROH, NJPW, etc. The sport you’re referring to is pro wrestling lmao
    Plus the only reason idiots laugh or take it as a joke and see it as pointless is because they don’t even understand the entire point of it. It’s not just fake fighting, the entire purpose is for promos being cut on the mic between wrestlers/factions, storylines being created n followed, and the emotions behind everything with it. That’s what gives it the entertainment aspect aside the crazy stunts and flips that cruiserweights pull off.

English speaking readers of the New York Times, etc. got hip to it, perhaps fancied themselves too sophisticated to be duped and started showing up less. People don't realize, not only are the fans in on it, we're actually used by some of the better wrestlers to make it more exciting. Wrestlers will whip the crowd to a rabid frenzy to get the environment just right for people in attendance or at home. D-Generation X would talk directly to the crowd for instance. Cheap heat is when a wrestler will come out in sports team rival's jersey to anger the audience. It's interactive entertainment.
    And if you think crowds are ridiculous now, some wrestlers had to carry target pistols so on their way to their car they could fire off blanks that sounded like real bullets because they'd get attacked. Andre the Giant was harassed by drunks so bad he chased them out of the bar and flipped their car. Crowds are tame these days.

    People who are upset or make fun of other people for watching Pro Wrestling should really stop watching movies, especially considering they are a lot more fake than pro wrestling.
    They themselves don't even realize why they watch and enjoy movies and series so much. The story is more important than whether it's real or not because the customer ultimately cares about whether they're entertained by what they see as opposed to how real it is.
    Also you've gotta be stupid if you think a human being could have a 20+ year career in pro wrestling after getting smacked in the head with steel chairs, closelined and thrown into burning tables. When it's real or a wrestler isn't careful to protect their opponent, the opponent gets injured. Even a simple powerbomb has left numerous former wrestlers paralyzed due to it being delivered as if they really meant to hurt their opponent.
    It's also the same reason people are drawn to Super heroes. WWE, AEW and the like just bring you the hero, villain story in a live setting which is a lot harder to do than recording multiple takes and editing it to make it look real and presented on a screen.
