hi , this is Carl Carlton son. thanks for reviewing my dad song. We was sitting down this morning and watching your video and we really enjoyed it. Appreciate yall respect for women and good music. Keep up the good work
One of the best funk songs of all time, and holds up 100% today and for many years to come. You should be very proud of your dad!
Ill be forever grateful to your dad for this song. One of my favs of all time. Played it at my wedding reception.
One of my favorite songs growing up. Your Dad made us all happy and we will never forget this one. Thank You.
A great song will always be a great song. You must be proud of your dad's accomplishment.
Couldn’t agree with you more Amber. How could the music industry go from how this song describes the beauty of a women to how rap and hip hop describes them today ?
Because we accept it. Just as many women as men listen to that trash.
The 80's had 2 Live Crew...
This is music, not garage.
The kinda music like hip hop existed it was just in more coded language
@@Carlinisalive 'coded language' say what??😮
This gem dropped in ‘81. It was a big club and roller rink hit.
That’s the year I graduated high school can’t believe it’s been that long🙋🏻♀️
@@jeanstrickland2445 time is FLYING! I graduated in ‘86.
tell me brenda are you the one i used to hold the hand at the skate.
James Ingram plays keyboards on this song. Before James became a protégé of Quincy Jones, he was in a funk band called Revelation Funk. You can see them in the 1970s movie "Dolemite"
I used to play bball with James bro Phillip round 77_78, he was in the band switch.. sepulveda park in panorama city CA...miss it too
I do a little karaoke and one of my favorites to do is Just Once.
@@jowsmith1904 Cool!
You taught me something. I didn’t know that James Ing played on this. If my memory is correct, it was written and produced by Leon Hayward of “I Wanna Do Something Freaky To You Fame”. Twentieth Century Records created an R&B sub label in 1979/80 and signed Leon Hayward as writer/producer and possibly A&R man. He signed veterans like Carl Carlton & Eugene Record to deals. This song was the only big hit. The label and parent company folded a year or so later.
Man I didn't know James Ingram played on this, Thanks for the info!
Carl had an earlier hit called, EVERLASTING LOVE. This song blew everyone away in the dance clubs and made you forget about everything except feeling good and the girl you thought was your personal Mama Jama.
Yes, they just covered that song the other day with another artist. But we all mentioned Carl in the comments.
This song got everybody on the dance floor back in the day. Those whoo hoos at the end everybody sang and loudly!
Also on the roller skating rink floor!
Sure did!
We still on the dancefloor with this jam.....try Rick James Superfreak and the Commadores Brickhouse
Yes it did!
👍
You guys totally need to get into more ‘80s R&B and funk. Start with Patrice Rushen’s “Forget Me Nots.” Such a great feel-good song. And Amber, there’s a HOT 🥵 sax solo! You guys could even include her on Female Fridays. Other hits from the genre are “Tonight” and “Keep on Loving Me” by the great Whispers; “Strawberry Letter 23” and “I’ll Be Good to You” by the Brothers Johnson; and “Make that Move” and “Night to Remember” by Shalamar.
I've been suggesting Patrice Rushen! How can then not cover this pint-sized queen and former crush of Prince
Great choices.
I was smitten with Patrice when that came out.
I love Strawberry Letter 23. My friends and I would stop the car n get out and dance to it. Not on the Interstate though. Lol. Just State Routes in the country or in the small cities where we lived. They aren't small anymore. Anyway it was so much fun! Oh to be young again.
That's the one sampled by the "Men in Black" theme song. Great funk.
This was the jam back in the day! Put this song on today and anyone over 50 will be on the floor. Class of 81 we played this at prom!
Definitely filled the dance floor. Jermaine Stewart, " We don't have to take our clothes off " is a few years after this but is very similar
“Treat her like a lady” by the Cornelius Bros & Sister Rose is another fun song from this era.
This song was a MONSTER on Top 40 radio in 1980 (81?) when it was released, and hung around for at least 5 years of regular airplay. "She's fit! She's stacked! She's got all the curves a man likes!"
You're dancing around his best recording, his cover of Everlasting Love. When you finally listen to it it will blow your doors off.
i was just playing this for my daughter and her friends sunday night, they are 21 yrs old.
SHOUT OUT TO ALL THE BAD MAMA JAMAS😊
This was a pretty big hit back in the early 80's and women that I knew swore that he was singing this song about them personally.
LOVE this song. It's over 40 years old and is STILL a bangin' song and will never get old. It's on both my funk and my disco compilations, a classic. Amber mentioned rap, it's not today's rap, but back in the late 90's Foxy Brown made a song called "Big Bad Mama" that featured Dru Hill and it sampled this song.
I remember Foxy Brown.
I'm going to have to go listen to that now!
@@jillwklausen It's a good song.
Great song! And we definitely tore it up in the basement parties!
Please react to these other bangers:
• Junior - Mama Used To Say
• Rick James - Superfreak
• Michael Jackson - Rock With You
They played this at the skating rink ... everyone would hit the floor and skate to this one.
2 hit wonder..... great tune, check out his version of ever lasting love
I would argue that Carl Carton's Kung Fu Fighting was also a hit.
@@siegelemerson921 Wasn't that Carl Douglas?
@@siegelemerson921 that was Carl Douglas
Whoops. My mistake. Kung Fu Fighting is by Carl Douglas
Jody Watley is really a singer to check out! Looking For a New Love, Don't You Want Me, Still A Thrill, Real Love, Friends and Everything are some of her best!
Along with her I'd add Pebbles and Karyn White.
I'm surprised that you haven't yet reacted to Heatwave.......what a band. "Grooveline" "Mind Blowin' Decisions" "Boogie Nights" and many more......well worth checking out.
HEATWAVE yes! They are awesome 👌!
Amber, Please consider Aretha "Natural Woman" for FEMALE FRIDAY. The live performance at the Kennedy Center awards was incredible.
Jay saying “HEY!” at the perfect moment is something I love about this channel. Great job you two!❤️
I know you didn't pick this from just my suggestion -- I'm sure lots of people suggested this in the comments for "Everlasting Love" -- but that was just two days ago! 😄 This is one of the jams in "Undercover Brother," along with "Brick House" (which you already played), "Dazz," "Ladies Night," and "To Be Real "
I've been an official bad mamma jamma judge since this song came out and I have to say, Jay you a lucky man! Amber is an official bad mamma jamma! You guys are great . You do make me smile every day. Thanks
Love this one! So much Funk and the Soul in his voice in the last verse. We danced our butts off to this.
This is a great one, and you may have seen in the comments from Love Affair, he did a disco remake of Everlasting Love. For some more funkiness,Parliament -Give up the Funk(Tear the Roof off this Sucka)
This was at the end of the disco era 🤧. My friend would sing this to me 41 yrs ago. 😄 Now 61 & a Nana of 2 .Time flies kids!! Best times of my life!! 💃 Although the present pretty sweet with a great family. The Commodores "Brickhouse" reminds me of this. So many more from the early 80's. Love you both.
Foxy Brown sampled this song in her banger "Big Bad Mama" which was on the "Def Jams How to Be a Player" movie soundtrack. It's definitely worth checking out, especially the video! It's a 90's classic!
That's why I figured he would guess the sample because of Fox Boogie! Maybe not his generation of rap.
That was awesome!
ALL the women seemed to always have an extra step on the dance floor while this was blowin everyone away!
That was the jam fo sho back in the day. It was one of the songs you always heard at the roller skating rink. If y’all like that, you would love “Jamaica Funk” by Tom Browne .
Since Jay likes singers with high pitched voices, I suggest "Never Can Say Goodbye" or "Don't Leave Me This Way" (which has horns in it!) by The Communards featuring the voice of Jimmy Somerville!
My man Jimmy still has the pipes today!
Love Jimmy Sommerville.
@@roderickcoates1424 Yes, Jimmy Somerville took these 2 Disco classic songs to another level! You wont be able to sit still - have to get up and dance to them!!!
Wow! Haven't thought about The Communards in decades. Thanks for the reminder!
She got Batman pajamas! This song is a never get old jam! So happy you two finally got a chance to react to it! Much love to the whole robsquad family!
Carl Carlton is such an powerful, soulful singer. Very underrated! When he gives that shouting "Hey-eh-yeah!!" at the end it gives me chills. He's just one of those guys where great phrases flowed effortlessly out of him.
Remember It! Funky Beat, Great Voice, this 70yr-old says 'What's Not to Like?' Happy to hear it again! :) Amber, I can testify.... You smiled for the whole song! Fun watching you guys!
Wife here..HAVE LOVED and JAMMED to THIS SONG ALL MY LIFE!!!...THANX!!..THE FUNK and LYRICS are OFF the CHAIN!!!
That’s LOVE ❤️ DESCRIBING HIS BAD MAMA JAMA 🥰 THE LYROCS R BADASS
Love watching you two enjoying this amazing funk classic. Giving me late 70's Stevie Wonder vibes.
Everlasting Love is the other great Carl Carlton song to react to. Different vibe, but also great.
I was 10 when this song came out! My sister and I used to sing it in the back of the station wagon. No seatbelts! 🤣
You should check out "All Cried Out," by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam with Full Force. Or "Love TKO" by Teddy Pendergrass.
all Cried out Alison Moyet - a better choice
You hit the nail on the head when you said how did we go from this to what is out there today. A majority of the old school songs were about appreciating women and now all I hear is songs about degrading women. I'm a white male almost 60 that grew up on #1 Motown & then Classic Rock and also had some Old Western and Big band/Jazz music influence from my father whose favorite artist was Nat King Cole. I've been watching several first reaction videos over the last couple of COVID years and I will say that your channel is my favorite and I believe your reactions are truly genuine. It doesn't hurt that your other fans are also suggesting some great songs and you are open to all of them. I hope you get to a million subscribers because I think you are keeping some great music alive. Heck, I even had to watch some of your videos for my own first time reaction or just because I completely forgot about how good that particular song was. Happiness and health to your family.
Such a fun song. Can't help getting up to dance to this! 🔥🙌
Praise women! Praise men that appreciate those women!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Let’s all get together and lift each other up! This song just fills my soul with happiness and 💕💕
Gotta play his biggest hit “Everlasting Love”, went to #6 in the fall of 74.
Yeah, it's from the year 1980, but it was probably written in the late seventies. It was so popular in the early eighties that I forget that people no longer know the song. And that "poetry in motion" line is a decades-older compliment, maybe dating back to the early 20th century. This song basically has the same message that the Commodores' 1977 "Brick House" did: that girl is built! For a similar message but from a woman's perspective about a man, check out Sister Sledge's 1979 "He's the Greatest Dancer."
This song is still such a banger. I found this song 1 day here on UA-cam. Loved it from the first time. Eargasm!
When I heard they had made a song about me, I wasn't sure I would like it.
But I did.
😜😁
I saw Rick James at the Oakland Coliseum back in the early 1980s. Carl Carlton opened for Rick. When Carlton played this jam at one point he brought his son on stage who had to be single digits at the time and they did a dance routine together. I may not have remembered that he opened for RJ if not for his young son coming out to perform with him. It was great.
Another song of his is “everlasting love” from the 70s.
5:07-yeah, Jay, we tore this up in clubs
This is a fine example of just how much a great song can change your mood. You two came into this reaction with downtrodden attitudes - who knows why - but suddenly a great song cheers you up.
It's good that you can choose a song on your own every once in a while. Good song and reaction here.
Club Music yes u are absolutely RIGHT JAY. They used to play this in the club with Junior "Mama Used To Say" can you 2 please react to this as well, thank you both for this reaction
One of the songs in Disco's Last Gasp in the early 80's. Still gets folks moving!
A great reaction, thank you both. This was a big tune in 1981, from the mid to late '70s music was so good, 'Junior - Mama Used to Say', 'Lynx -You're Lyin' are other great tracks from that time.
My husband used to call me his bad mama pajama back in the day. Everyone danced or skated to this one. Speaking of poetry in motion by Johnny Tillotson from back in 1961.
This song is from 1981 and a lot of the R & B took this sound route because of the synthezisers...great song...good job
We DID tear it up in the clubs on the dance floor! Used to Love dancing to this song! it was released in 1981. Thanks for this fun reaction! ;-)
Everybody hit the floor at the Skating Rink when this came on.... we'd be Boogey Bouncing our asses off to this jam in the mid 80's! :)
Have you listened to Young MC “Bust a Move”? Early rap, no degrading lyrics, fantastic song. Karaoke night in New Orleans… a good time was had by all.
In 1981 I got to see Carl Carlton perform this up close in a small nightclub. The place was jamming!
I know that you recently played Everlasting Love by Love Affair, but I highly recommend that you listen to Carl Carlton's version. He does an incredible job with it, as witnessed by his performance in this song!
My first concert was Rick James, Teena Marie and Carl Carlton. Oakland Arena. We had an excellent time. I was 13 years old .
Thank you for supporting my Cuz. Much Love and appreciation. This is ( Jeanine)🥰
Great dance tune from back in the day. If you can't find a way to move to this one, it's cause you can't move no more!
You should check out "Get Off" by Foxy. It is a jam.
Underrated Banger!!!
His song "Everlasting Love" will become a favourite. It is a old school love song with early on charm.
How you made me laugh Amber when you said you were gonna mess with Jay's phone. It was reminiscent of your " Pranks" you've done on your family Channel. Some of them are sooo funny.
You make me smile everyday. 😄😂🤣
Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Big, big, BIG danc'n song!!! Nobody was sitting!!!
Everlasting Love was my favorite from Mr. Carlton. But I danced to this song many many times.
Everlasting Love, is a great song done by Carl Carlton
My introduction to Carl Carlton in about 1974 as a fourth grader. Year later I discovered it was a 70’s cover. After that I forgot about him. He came storming back 6 years later with this smash! It was huge in the summer of ‘80. Sadly he never had another big hit lite this again. It inspired the Bar-Kay’s “Traffic Jammer”.
This was the roller skating song!
I was in Jr High when this song was popular. Haven't heard it in years, but it took my mind right back to the roller skating rink. ❤😁❤
His version of EVERLASTING LOVE is the best!
Not just in the club! My oldest daughter told me that when she and a friend went to Florida to visit her uncle they were driving with him down a main street and came to a stop light. This song came on his radio and he literally turned it up with the bass, got out of the car and began dancing in the middle of the intersection. A few other car occupants got out and began dancing with them. She said it was a real showstopper. I would've loved to have been there!
Always loved this song and it's also played in the movie "Two Can Play That Game". Awesome movie.
That’s what I remember it from. Vivica fox
Classic Ol' School Jam.
He had another hit from a few years before called ever lasting love!
it's already been said, but it's worth repeating...carl carlton's "everlasting love" is an absolute banger...i heard it for the first time a few years ago on track radio and as soon as it ended i played it again...amber i'm sure you have enough female friday suggestions to take you through 2055, but carl made me think of timi yuro's "im so hurt"
Fun song! Try George Thorogood and the Destroyer’s “Move it on Over”!!!🤘🔥
When you guys were talking about how did we go from songs like this to the lyrics we have today it made me think if a few groups and songs that were fire like this song.
Zapp n Roger - "Computer Love", "I Wanna Be Your Man"
Atlantic Starr - "Always", "I'll Remember You", "Secret Lovers"
Lionel Richie - "Say You, Say Me", "Hello", "Three Times A Lady", Endless Love", "Stuck On You", "I Call It Love"
You definitely need to react to Everlasting Love by Carl Carlton! You just reacted to that song by the group Love Affair, but his is the version that you definitely have to hear!
We skated, danced, and sang to this song 🎵thanks for sharing. Much love to you and your family 💕Brandi Modrak 💕P.S and yes we partied to this ♥
This is definitely one for the "Living Room Dance Party" playlist.
Can't sit still during this song and he sounds so happy. Great song I haven't heard in forever, thanks.
His voice always reminded me of Stevie Wonder a bit as well. Such a great classic song.
You guys need to do Rick James & Tina Marie “Fire & Desire” powerful singing in this cut.
Those of us who grew up in Detroit (where Carl is from) know him as "Little" Carl Carlton. One of his first hits "Competition Ain't Nothin'" was popular when I was a child. I haven't heard his name in years - sure brings back long-forgotten memories!
We could not wait for the DJ to play this song at the club. He was nominated for a grammy in 1982, reached number two on R&B charts. Another great feel good song is "Rock the Boat" by the Hues Corproation.
Good memories from this one. You should hear "Everlasting Love" I think it was an even bigger hit.
They did a cover of that song by Love Affair two days ago.
@@Shrykespeare Thanks, I'll have to check it out.
This instantly took me back to the dance clubs. This song got EVERYONE on the floor!
I loved Carls remake of "Baby i need your loving" from the following album. It has the same dance floor groove as Bad Mama Jama. Give it a listen when you get a chance.
This came out in 1981 . His remake of Everlasting Love in 1974
I know this song. It's a classic. I don't know what else he's got. But the talent is clear.
Everlasting Love is really good by him.
this is my father he have a big smile on his face watching this thanks for the love and support also listen too his other song called private property i like that one lol
Love it! I was 18 in ‘81’…
I was at that age where I’d tear up the Roller Disco, then hit the clubs afterwards. Good times!
A huge hit in the clubs at college. Everyone got on the dance floor for this one! A friend would do backflips to it!
Always loved the funky beat in this song!!!!!
When Jay's arms come up and he starts swaying, you know he's really into it! 😁🥰
Just looking at your expressions and your moves, I can see that you just cannot contain it!!!! Dance out!!!
This Song was Played at my High School Dances and Partiesand at the Skating Rinks. Everyone would get on the Dance floor!
