A passionate, sensitive, and extraordinary performance by three gifted musicians. Frost's haunting, beautiful tone and his subtlety are akin to a master class in clarinet greatness.
Such an extraordinarily balanced ensemble whose deep love of their individual instrument sound, and how to meld it into a whole, doesn't come along often. Twenty-five minutes of channeling Brahms. Thank you.
ABSOLUTELY!!! I had a clarinet/sax studio for forty years. My son attended a concert of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra with his UW-EAU CLAIRE clarinet studio and arranged to meet Mr. Frost (O with an "umlaut") after the concert and got to have a group photo taken with him AND receive an autographed concert ticket.
The musicians' ability to play with full passion and articulate clearly at the same time is very rare ,not to mention the rare ability to play together.Great that this performance has been preserved!
@@mpatcas I agree 100 percent. What disturbs me is that reputedly Brahms preferred the trio. The quintet, for me, is one of the handful of greatest chamber works. I'd love to hear Brahms explain his thinking.
There are simply so many subtle touches that this particular trio makes. The only account I can articulate at the moment is that tender resolution by the clarinet during that embellished variant of the opening material [4:45-4:55]. Strikes my heart every time!
Found this video from 'Classical Music' group chat that was shared on MeWe network. As I listen to this, I am mindful of the masterful playing of the trio. This is amazing -- the beginning clarinet solo is wonderful, and being an amateur clarinetist and pianist myself, I am enjoying listening to this (and should be a great piece to wind-down the day with). Brahms was a genius, and thanks for putting this here.
Thank you, merci, for this poetic response to such musical poetry. I could listen over and over as I did on a train from Paris to somewhere in Germany many years ago. Listening to the cd and playing the piano part atop the score lying on my lap on the train. I am still in awe as the piece and playing accompany me in Acadia State Park. Oui, "belle a pleurer..."
There are these heavenly works for the clarinet by Brahms: this trio, his clarinet quintet and his two clarinet (/viola) sonatas (Op. 120). I wish he wrote a clarinet concerto! (Mozart did, of course.)
One of the most outstanding lovedeclarations in music literature by the cello and piano to the clarinet, Brahms to Richard Mühlfeld, his "fraulein clarinet"
As I will be airing this magnificent trio in two days, for the first time, I am inspired by the ensemble tightness and give and take of this group of very excellent players. I hope my clarinet playing can attempt to match what is so fulfilling in this presentation. Keep playing and sharing with the rest of us, as it does help and inspire us to seek higher ground. trio sublime ,, le clarinettiste joue prodigieusement d'un instrument qui fût si cher à la création intimiste de brahms ,, le pianiste paraît talentueux et l'ensemble nous propose une version fabuleuse dans la lignée des morceaux de musique de chambre du maître de hambourg ,, que de romances ,, on peut y voir les lumières pâles de la mer du nord qu'affectionnait tant le jeune yohannes quand il jouait des nuits entières dans les cabarets enfumés du port de hambourg , aux cris des marins ivres des relents de bière âcres des parfums puants dont abusaient les filles de joie railleuses ,, c est dans ce cadre étrange que naquit l'immense génie de brahms , pour notre plus grand plaisir ,, comme on aurait aimé qu'il composât plus mais chacun des ses opus exige tant travail d'intuition de maîtrise musicale pour finalement accéder aux sphères rares du génie ,, merci pour le partage ,,
This trio does not equal the quintet with clarinet op. 115, but it is quite typical of the autumnal colors of the late production of Brahms. It is a very sensitive piece.
Superb. Even though I'm a clarinetist, I particularly love the way Hagen varies his bow position, toward the bridge for more resonance and toward the fingerboard for less. As always, there's the vibrato problem, which the cello does easily and the clarinet does only with difficulty. I particularly wish that Hagen wouldn't vibrate on apoggiatura and suspension resolutions, but maybe that's just me. At any rate, this is the only version that equals the old Kell recording.
As a violist, I love this piece on viola. But this clarinetist plays it so beautifully! I don't care much for this cellist though. His lines are too short and fragmented.
QuickScopersUnknown While I find Martin Fröst great and he plays many of standard classical repertory very well I think he is a bit better in contemporary music. Personally when it comes to standard classical music I take Walter Boeykens,Håkan Rosengren and Michael Collins over Martin Fröst.
Stefan Sigfinnsson I understand where you come from. After all, I wasn't too impressed with his performances of Mozart and Weber, but his renditions of Copland and Nielsen are fantastic.
Are you kidding!? The cellist has amazing dynamic and chamber music skills! He doesn't break the continuous line of music ever, and plays very sympathetically towards the others. I'm sure that's why Frost picked him in the first place, for his amazing palette of dynamic and shading. They all blend tremendously well!
I love this cellist’s bowing which sounds like a wind instrument’s articulation. Soooooo good!!
A passionate, sensitive, and extraordinary performance by three gifted musicians. Frost's haunting, beautiful tone and his subtlety are akin to a master class in clarinet greatness.
The cellist is really amazing!
+ekimong Belongs to the outstanding Hagen Quartett
.....And the Clarinetist!
So is his whole fam 😅
And pianist❤

One of my favourite pieces in general. Brahms has become my favourite composer after listening 15 years of classical mosic.
this cellist steals the show. amazing
The opening theme played by Clemes Hagen has never been better played!
ABSOLUTELY!!!

EXCELLENT cellist, gorgeous tone!

Greatest piece of music ever written.......
give the clarinet quintett op. 115 a try. it is in the same vain and IMO even greater
@@mpatcas I agree 100 percent. What disturbs me is that reputedly Brahms preferred the trio. The quintet, for me, is one of the handful of greatest chamber works. I'd love to hear Brahms explain his thinking.
Just listen to how musically Mr. Frost plays the phrase starting at 2:32: perfection!
Leif Ove Andsnes is in my view the most sensitive pianist in the world today. He never plays anything without capturing the essence.
listen a few seconds before 02:37 for appreciate the sound between clarinet and piano, its amazing how they achieve this, really unique
Dream performance.Sounds like a once in a lifetime meeting.
It's hard to find a cello and clarinet sounding beautiful together - and y'all did a very good job of just that!
Wow. Such beautiful playing.
I am absolutely in love with this. I first heard it at a chamber music concert a couple years ago and never looked back
For me, this is the best recording on youtube. I am currently practising the first part (I play the clarinet) and it helps a lot to play with it too.
i could listen to this for years and not get the least bit bored

Geniuses are a dime a dozen. Brahms was superhuman, our language doesn’t have words to describe his ability to touch the human heart.

I came back repeatedly for the rest and now find it complete in one block, what a surprise, many thanks!
Wonderful!

Stupendous performance! What a great trio, a) by Brahms and b) of musicians. Thank you Gents, this was truly wonderful.

Brahms clarinet chamber works are all masterpieces...
Magnifique, wonderful! quelle musique et quels interprètes!
Form and content. Take your pick. You can't miss. Both are so evident in this beautiful late work. Thank you for the video.
Really beautiful. The entire ensemble is outstanding.
Brahms smile in the heaven.........
Gooooooood

Mary Vinquist I agree! I'm a cellist as well, and I'm trying to sound like Hagen in chamber works with others. :)
elegant
Such beautiful piece. By the way, Martin Frost has such long legs lol...chair seems a bit low for him
Ditto!
I disagree, the cellist's lines are beautiful and breathtaking
Nice

10/10 :)
I prefer the trio to the quintet. Both are great.

As a violist, I love this piece on viola. But this clarinetist plays it so beautifully! I don't care much for this cellist though. His lines are too short and fragmented.
Frost is one of the greats. His sound is amazing.
I'm no cellist but the cello sounds pretty good.

QuickScopersUnknown I don't care much for his renditions of the Nielsen concerto. I much prefer John McCaw's version with Philaharmonia Orchestra.
I'm so confused... who are these 19 people who didn't think this was incredible playing?!?!
+Andrew Janss maybe some People that plays in weddings.
they are 23. and it is a choice
+Happy Guy And now now they're 28...!?
Agreed. I swear there are some people who just go around videos without watching them, clicking the dislike button just for the sake of it...
Don’t focus on such things.
Love what you love.
