As the world's worst 1st violin In a quartet I can confirm the score is rather difficult, the wonderful counter rhythms 3 against 2 and 4 create superb tensions for the player and listener and their resolution just creates the romanticism that is Brahms. So well played
These guys have a completeness and equality of roles which is exceptional in string quartets. I admire their playing a lot and Brahms seems to fit them like a glove. The "awkward" third movement is particularly successful.
A sense of the fine brush, intense fusion, counterpoint and depth, of the Borodin, no less an admirable, loving embrace of Brahms by Jerusalem. And there is nothing wrong with the applause-when/ where ever.
You ask, is there "less leeway for interpretation with Brahms?" I don't think so. Listen to the amazing Carlos Kleiber version of B's 2nd symphony with the Vienna and then listen to a number of others. This quartet is remarkable because they can all sink into the notes, have all the parts be clear and together, and hold the long line, which builds so much tension and interest with Brahms. That is hard to do -- very rare. Also listen to the second movement where the cello comes in (right after 20:20) --superb.
I reckon this is Brahms best quartet - strange perhaps that he published it as "No.2" and not No.1. The complex rhythms and harmonies, delayed resolutions, the tension in the fugato at the end of the first movement - brilliant stuff. And fiendishly difficult to play, so many string crossings in the upper parts, 4 against 3, etc etc. My amateur quartet will attempt this soon, wish us luck!!
Otherwise, behold a positively-*_superlative_* piece - absolutely wonderfully played!!!! As I'm making my way through Brahms' chamber music (Clarinet-Quintet in b-minor {H-moll}, Op.115, Piano-Quartet in a-minor, Op.25 {to which I'll have to come back very soon!} - and now THIS!!!): this most certainly is a *gold mine* of absolute TREASURES!!! Only one item of puzzlement: one of the tuning-pegs of the 'cello seems broken or missing! Since it seems that all 4 strings ARE being used nevertheless, how is it that the string stays in tune and doesn't need to be adjusted (e.g., between movements)? Thanks in advance to whoever can explain this to me.
@@mancas71 there is no op 15 in beethoven quartets tho. Given that they are playing in the Marinsky theatre i guess it's way more probable that those are the numbers of orchestral stands (it's a very common thing for thecnicians to write numbers to remember where to put them for concert). I don't have russian alphabet on my phone but I assure you orchestra is written as the guy above pointed out.
+Fiona Laursen - I agree, beautiful piece & well done.. one quick question?.. what is "xdxd"? (I'm an old dude, and horribly outa' the loop, jajaja).. thanks, Rick
Argh it‘s so unrespectful to activate advertisment between the movements and even more right in the music that the music stops. That‘s a big unrespectiveness against brahms!
When was the last time a quartet received applause after the slow movement of a quartet? And in a cultural capital like St. Petersburg? Perhaps it is the norm there, but clearly not elsewhere.
К сожалению, на концерты часто ходит необразованная публика. Нормальная образованная публика Санкт-Петербурга знает, когда хлопать. Но пришло много немузыкантов (предполагаю, из еврейской общины), которые были рады выразить свою любовь между частями.
The first movement is a massive work - quite symphonic, so I just think the audience was reflecting on the huge journey they'd been through. They needed a pause, too.
I wonder if others have the same feeling that Brahms leaves less leeway for personal interpretation, or dictates more powerfully what mood and character his music should have, or even that good musicians naturally hit the nail on the head in the same way… so that what one listens to is not so much this or that quartet playing, but Brahms. I noticed this in performances of the piano music - rarely allowing eccentricities, unlike, say, the same pianists playing Bach. To me, this Jerusalem Quartet recording sounds good, but not in any way distinguished, which is perhaps precisely the distinction. if you see what I mean
I fully agree! Always feel like that listening GOOD PERFORMANCES of Brahms! That’s the goal of every good musician, I believe - to make the contact between the composer and listeners without being the most important part of this process:))))
"Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre St. Petersburg 4 December 2013" Perhaps they just liked it ?? Maybe the audience is not civilised enough, but interpretation is tremendous. I would have probably jumped all over the room by joy.
A show off string-quartett, they can play, yes, but why all this showing "Oh how I am superb"? Please watch Guarneri-Quartett 1987 - a different world and different culture - they play much better, but take it as selfunderstood, everyone in the audience understood, too, at those times, no need to "show"...

The best musicians to play Brahms I have ever heard!!!
Exceptional, seamless, beautiful performance. Well done, guys!

Awesome performance. One of the best quartets of these times.
yes. to bad Brahms didn't write 15 more masterpieces at this level. luckily he managed to write 1 or 2 truly great quartets..same for Schumann.
My god, this is stunning
Such a pleasant sounding piece that it doesn't even feel like it's in a minor key.
Music starts at 0:52
Die beste Aufführung dieses anspruchsvollen Meisterwerks bis heute. Die Tonqualität ist auch ausgezeichnet.
Good balance between lyric and dramatic. Always hits the mark. Lets the music flow like a stream. Bravo!
The last movement has always been a favorite of mine, and this interpretation is simply stunning. Goosebumps!!
Me too!

Excellent performance - they gel together very well.
Great performance. Fantastic cellist... and his intstrument is veeery powerful. Bravissimi
absolutely amazing
Such beauty!
Powerful and divine music!
my favorite Brahms string quartet.
This is so beautiful
These immense Brahms string quartets are infrequently heard. Why? Thanks, Jerusalem Quartet.
too much pizzicato :D
I'm sorry but the string quartets and other chamber music of J. Brahms are a big part of the repertoire.
Some ask ‘Why? I say ‘Why not?’
They performed this piece perfect!! It's almost difficult work..
so much more refined than his first it's marvelous.
like comparing apples and oranges- both are delicious!
And the first is also marvellous if wildly romantic.
amazing!
WONDERFUL
Stupendous! The third movement is strikingly haunting. But, then, this is Johannes Brahms!

@@maikereimer8382 we almost made it to the end... Next week we will have another attempt on the summit
Thank's
Brahms really brought out his luscious, dark voice in these quartets.
I wouldn't label his voice as "dark"...seems like bright light to me.
but I know what you meant..brahms at his best.
the audience loved it so much they clapped after the first movement haha
the applause is annoying but still better than the sacrilegious UA-cam ads 😭

The piece is op.51. The music stand says op.45. I don't know what to believe anymore.
Addendum: I definitely have a man crush on Ori Kam
would guess "op." in op. 15 stands for "оркестр" or something
And the cellist is playing op. 18!
Op51

The chairs are nicely raised for good playing posture... 😀
Surprised i'm the first to comment on the applause in between movements, at the Mariinsky Theatre too surprising and jarring ...
when brahms premiered his piano quintet, there was thunderous applause after every single movement.
slight correction: Hans van bulow was at the piano.
Stunning performance. In my opinion only Emerson's recording can match this!
Jeffrey Chan and this is even live...
Argh it‘s so unrespectful to activate advertisment between the movements and even more right in the music that the music stops. That‘s a big unrespectiveness against brahms!

It's not personal, it's business.
Do you really think there's a difference between a Brahms video and a Barbie video for UA-cam?
Buy a CD or pay for the music otherwise. It is disrespectfull to think you can get it all for free.

Is it so terrible that the public shows its enthusiasm? For me it's a problem only if it disturbs the artists.
Isa de Gracia You are both right. But applause between mov is annoying.
That second movement was just breathtaking and deserved applause even if it was disconcerting to some.

All of us were happy at that time but not any more.
So well said. After 2014, Russia turned toxic.

I agree. The music of Brahms will suffer greatly if it is infused with interpretation. These guys seem to know that.
The Russian clap after every movement!!! In that way they really don't listen the true atmosphere of this delicate inner-sounding score...............
Brahms must have felt pretty good about that one - and he would have liked this performance too.
Is it too much to ask to put the advertisements between movements?
Why does it seem like this string quartet TOWERS over his 1st? Am I crazy?

Maybe one day, after did heard these works: love you Brahms? will be why you laugh from Brahms?

Wow; such a beautiful concert, what wonderful music. And the cellist??? Wow, very Russian...
Fantastic music! But - don't applaud in between movements.
Wonderful playing of a very difficult quartet. The applause from the audience after every movement was very off-putting, though.

Gorgeous playing. But Uffa! The movement is out of sync with the sound!
Brutta abitudine del pubblico di applaudire fra un movimento e l'altro!!
