Hahah in most countries not even human friendships can escape deadly violence. Many a “friend” has maimed another for all sorts of inane reasons. You simply can’t turn your brain off around any other living being.
One in the zoo never attacked the guy, it told him to sod off. If you are laying on the floor and a hippo stares down at you, but you live to tell all about it. It never attacked you.
Can someone please explain why you'd opt to cruise around in a tiny little paddle boat on a river full of hippos? Like independent thought is allowed yknow?
I was on the Zambezi river last year in Zimbabwe. We were having a boat tour. It was a cruise, so the boat was big and fast. We saw elephants, hippos, & alligators. It was amazing …but I couldn’t imagine getting on those waters in a CANOE!? No. Thank goodness he survived…unfortunately his friend who drowned wasn’t so lucky.
I'm sorry but what was he thinking? He should have listened to his wife. The second warning should have him second guessing himself when his nephew was attacked. Common sense failed him. I'm sorry but i don't feel sorry for Marius. A hippo is a terrible choice for a pet.
Right? I felt more sympathetic towards him when I thought he didn't know better but less so now that I know he thought he knew better than the experts because of some "special" bond he imagined. I mean I love dogs and have felt bonds with them (not to mention they are also actually domesticated by centuries) but I would still take precautions around strangers or kids/babies because even domesticated animals can attack you. Even zoo keepers and conservationists/rescuers who raise wild animals know that when sexual maturity comes around, handling them becomes a lot more risky and they usually have to take more steps for simple things like feeding or cleaning. I'm honestly just glad no one else died to this hippo by some miracle and I hope the hippo wasn't put down for following its instincts. Worst part is, I doubt this will be the last time someone attempts this :/ humans aren't great at learning from past mistakes
Although hippos have been previously been considered to be herbivores, there are many instances in which they have been recorded eating meat and engaging in cann1bali$m. The first *verified* instance of hippos eating meat (operative word being 'verified') was recorded in 1995 by Dr. Joseph Dudley (University of Alaska) while visiting the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. According to Dr. Keith Eltringham, one of the world's leading experts on the species, hippos will consume meat because of insufficient nutrients and other factors not currently understood.
From the footage alone, the Hippo didn't listen to him AT ALL. They have no bound, it was just on his head. That animal just have patience. Once again misunderstood patience as obedience
As kids growing up in Tanzania, we'd go to the park and play the daring game of "Slap the hippo". Looking back, it was silly. My friends were eaten one by one. I stopped playing because I was the only one left. So I moved to Sheboygan Wisconsin, where there are no hippos.
I saw a video in which a boy of about 12 tried to annoy a rhino in a game park. Finally he succeeded, and the rhino leapt at him, judging the distance between them with such precision that he landed with a crash just inches away from the boy. The boy took off even faster than the rhino.
There is just a slight bit of misinformation in this video. No, hippos cannot bite off human limbs. Especially not in one bite. Other then that, good video. Thank you for putting it together.
Be safe! Just adopt a gila monster. They're easily trained. And a couple of Brazilian wandering spiders. They're just adorable! And sea snakes for your swimming pool. And for the perfect lap pet ... Komodo Dragons! Get a pair!!! Name them Antony and Cleopatra.
How about a blue ringed octopus from Australia? It's so tiny you can keep it in your pocket and you won't even know it's there. Until you put your hand in, that is…
I am disappointed that the narrator said - early on in this video - that we would find out what made Marius's pet hippo finally snap, but then said - several minutes later - that no-one knows for sure why the hippo attacked Marius. He posed a couple of questions such as: "Did it attack Marius because it felt threatened? Or was it trying to defend its territory?" Thus, he should have rather said - early on in this video - that "Today we will look at what possible reasons the pet hippo of Marius may have had to attack him, and what that can then teach us about what we need to be aware of before we decide to go to an area where there are hippos in nearby lakes".
I thought you said this was how to survive!? But you want me to get behind a car because a 900 lb hippo can't flip it like you flip a quarter? Okay, bye now.
Much of the hippo footage was of Jessica, a hippo rescued at 1 day old by a couple who raised her. She was 7 when she wandered into a farmer's property and was shot and killed. Marius's hippo was rescued at +-4 months old, was rehabilitated, and only then was taken in by Marius at a much older age. While I don't agree with owing wild animals, I have worked with them and I can say that while there is ALWAYS a risk working or owning them, the younger they are when you get them, the better. On another note, to say the hippo would eat him to death is an incorrect statement. Hippos attack and kill but never eat humans.
On Vancouver Island I met a bear, which ignored me. In Kaziranga (India) I met a rhino, which did not. Luckily I was in a jeep and the rhino contented itself with chasing us off its territory. I can't imagine playing piggyback with either one, and certainly not with a hippo.
the circumstances of apex animals such as hippos, is that they want to be respected after they reach adulthood, in which they know they're physically dominant. They're intelligent enough to know when they're being subjugated; made into a pet. For example, unlike dogs, there is a reason why its difficult to leash-train a wolf, as many will refuse this type of subjugation by a man.
I'm patiently waiting for Steve Backshall to become the next Steve Irwin. All that knowledge and experience, yet little respect for the animals themselves. He'll do anything for the camera.
I agree completely. Or how about these people that choose to interact with predatory wild animals? Specifically those that think it’s OK to camp in bear territory….smh. Ya know….. almost everyone of these fools say the same thing: “the animals and I have a mutual respect for one another….” 🙄 I don’t think that’s true. I don’t think those wild bears, big cats or wolves have a mutual “respect” for humans that interact with them. I think it’s merely toleration on behalf of the animals. They tolerate those humans because they’re probably feeding them. But eventually, that won’t matter because wild instincts almost always kick in, and those animals end up biting the hand that feeds them. Then the next thing you know, a posse is formed with intentions to kill the wild animal that attacked a human stupid enough to get too close…..smh

Humans tend to anthropomorphize animals (give them human traits) and it's DANGEROUS to go down this road!! Dogs are the only species that I know of (with the exception of some hand reared birds) that have a 'sense' of their owners and their feelings/state of mind. Example. I has a baby rooster that I hand reared. I even brought him into the house and put a little diaper on him. But, as soon as he reached sexual maturity, he ATTACKED me, cutting my calf open with one of his spurs. We had to dispatch him bc he'd attack me every time I went into the yard! He, most likely, viewed me as 'competition' for his hens (chickens don't have any knowledge of the sexes in humans; as far as I was concerned I was just another rooster). Dogs have proven their loyalty to their owners and have performed incredible tasks for their owners and can be loyal to a fault. BUT, that is a strategy that the dog has developed over MILLIONS of years as a survival instinct; is the dog capable of 'love' of the owner? Is my Pitbull's' extreme degree of observation of the yard in the evening a strategy for it's own purposes or to truly protect me? Who knows?
