I love how calm Clawdia was when you had to take her out for Mr. Pirate belly-wetting demonstration. She came back at the end and started grooming him like nothing happened. So lovely.
Good point about "wait and see". I have learned that if I suspect something, I should act and take them to the vet. Follow your gut and don't second-guess yourself as a pet guardian. I have never had it happen where I thought something was wrong, took them in, and it was nothing. It has always been something more serious.
Very helpful in this terrible weather. I have 2 elderly cats and a younger one. They love to go outside. I stay vigilant and let them in often to cool down. Always have cold water available out on the deck for them. If I go out for any time, I keep them in the house. I have treated ferrets for heat stroke using the above methods. It has been too hot to take my snakes outside for enrichment. Thank you Doctor, this information can save an animal's life.
to say that the very afternoon I watched this film, we found a neighbours cat showing the symptoms you described so clearly. I followed your advice and some hours later she was able to pad home. Your film helped her. Thank you, from London
Thank you for sharing this information. It's really important to keep our pets cool. Several years ago, our cat started panting. I didn't have the help of this video, but I made a good guess. My kids and I set a box fan near her, got several washcloths and a big bowl of ice water, then sat on the floor with her. We soaked the cloths in the water, wrung them out, and gently petted her with them. At first she hated it, but a few seconds later, she let us wipe her down. She even let us wipe her belly. She checked out fine later.
Very helpful advice and the Australian RSPCA has some great resources on many topics regarding pets, in recent months we have had a Leptospirosis outbreak on the East Coast due to the wet weather we have had over summer and they quickly responded with information resources regarding avoidance and treatment.

We are in the second heatwave in summer this year in the UK and my flat got to 45C indoors last time! My poor cat was panting but would run away if I approached her with a wet towel or ice. I ended up wetting my hands in cold water and stroking her in front of a fan which helped cool her down if anyone is in a similar situation!
Thank you so much! Victorian Australian here. Currently winter, but it does get very hot here. 46c. and we can't afford air con. From the servant of a lovely old cat.
Australians are too tough for air con, I've always thought. When I studied in Sydney I was always surprised how few buildings had AC. In the USA, in a similar climate, every enclosed space including dog kennels would be air conditioned. That's why they have such issues with power outages in hot weather!
There is Cooling Pad for pet, doesn't require battery or electricity. It's working by simple method of surface evaporation. It absorb heat from the part our cat lies on, and evaporate the heat on uncovered surface. Might be useful when the weather is hot.

When I lived in California I used to let my cat outside while I worked in our garden. She would play in the lavender and chase around the butterflies and then would often lay on the black top in direct sun for an hour or so. She was both hot to the touch and lathargic from essentially cooking herself. I kept a kiddy pool of fresh water in the middle of our garden to attract birds for her to watch out the window, so before bringing her in I would dunk her. She was never happy about it lol. She eventually figured out that if she sunned herself in the garden instead of the blacktop that there would be no dunking or being chased around the house with a towel when she bolted back inside after said dunking.

Hi, We were on holiday during a hot period this summer, have twin cats from a litter of four. the temperature went up to 42 C in the shade and the cats became very distressed so we took them outside and covered them with wet towels, after a minute or two they responded and started drinking lots of cold water, after 20 mins they were back to normal and still drinking water. They seem to know what to do to cool down the insides but we cooled their outsides first. We purchased a air conditioner so that the inside of the motorhome remained cool in hot weather.
Dr. Uri: My family and I discovered we have two feral kittens living in the yard of our new home. We are working to socialize them and have appointments to have them fixed and vaccinated in a few weeks. We are reluctant to bring them indoors...we are concerned about how our indoor senior cat will respond. Socializing is happening slowly. Do you have any recommendations on how to handle the kittens? Should we bring them indoors?
I live in an appartement, and my 3 cats can just go on the balcony. 29°c inside, 35°c outside. I have a clim just for one room with a pet door. There is a big cooling mat, a wet towel on the floor in the others rooms... But they go... on the balcony!! 🤔

This is the exactly the reason why I want to get my cat used to water for cases like this and needing to cool my cat who is obviously prone to heatstroke since he's black
Is there ever a problem with cooling a cat down too fast or something and having them catch cold? I have a cat with asthma and I’m never sure if she’s sick or has asthma and we had a (short, luckily) panting incident this summer when the ac froze and didn’t work (it turned into a block of ice from working overtime after not being on for a day) and that was when the panting thing happened. Luckily the ice block had just thawed out and it was night but it was still hotter than normal…I felt like a sneezing cat (almost one year old kitten) that was playing hard might have gotten even more sick going from hot to cold and wet and windy. That was a fluke and I’ll do everything I can to ensure it never happens again but is catching cold something that could possibly happen? I got her chilling out instead of playing and the room got cool fast plus she ate wet food and drank for me. If it had been anything other than that I was ready to do the water because I’m sure catching cold would be far preferable to continued heat stroke. It’s hard not having a vehicle and no way to get to a vet- I’m the one always saying go to the vet! Hurry, don’t wait! It’s always better to be told it’s fine and to go home and relax than to wish you could have done something more! Thank you so much for these videos. Now, if only I could subscribe to getting subcutaneous fluids in the mail LOL PS. I’m helping someone brush out their Norwegian Forrest Cat and there are quite a few dreads- is there anything you can recommend to make the process easier? I generally don’t like using any products on cats since they lick their fur but I’m not sure I’ll be able to tackle this without some help. I see Chris Christensen makes a cat fur spray for static- that’s the only brand I know of that seems to make sure their products don’t harm the cats/animals but I’d feel better if it was unscented. Also, I probably can’t do a bath after the brush out lol I know not to use olive oil and saw other people using cornstarch but I’m not convinced lol I feel like a food type item is bad news but maybe cornstarch is different? Idk, what can I do to help this cat? She’s older, like 9, and all I can think of is feliway maybe. I’ll try to do small sections at a time and see how much she lets me do. Shaving is a no-go as well. At least for now. Is there anything you could recommend to help the process out?
Not at all. If you suspect they are overheating, getting that core body temperature down as fast as possible is essential. As for shaving out dreds, we've recently discovered that nothing beats ahem... male persona grooming clippers. You can google that. They work wonderfully for sensitive skin, and have been getting a lot of use (on our patients) at the clinic!
@@HelpfulVancouverVet thank you so much for always responding with such kind and thoughtful messages. I’ll have to look into that- the guard protects their tissue paper skin from being pulled in right? Hopefully I can work on a few at a time and get them brushed out- maybe I can try one of my comb with the metal teeth with the long metal stick on the end, I’m not sure what it’s called but I bet the long metal stick end might be useful breaking some of the loser dreads:) thanks again!
KGB idk if it's ok but my cat eats a few corn kernels in the a.m. and it doesn't seem to hurt her. Mookie also ears cooked garbonzo beans after she chases them. There are cat videos addressing what cats shouldn't eat. Research it. 😊
Corn is used as a filler in lots of cat food. It's probably not a great thing for them to eat but I think it's okay. I use a cat food that has no fillers in it though to be on the safe side.
What to do when it’s 30C in the shade and the cat demands walkies … I’m the one overheating :) But, I keep a close watch and get us both indoors before it’s needed.
I'm confused on whether you should or should not put a cool wet towels on or under a cat?..a video I watched before this one said not to do that..to prevent shock?.. isn't that the same as cold packs?..
I rehydrated my cat with unflavored peditric Pedialyte as the emergency vet clinic wanted to charge me CAD 1000 for one night on IV. It works to some exend for mild dehydratation.
It definitely didn't and $1000 is a deal for one night in an ICU. At least one doctor, usually two or three nurses staying up all night to care for your pet. Try talking to your lawyer at 4 am and see how much that is per hour.
@@HelpfulVancouverVet Not sure it was for ICU. I just know they charged me CAD 800 for the visit (waited for 8 hours) and the most basic blood tests, all this because his regular vet did not want to see my cat. I call another vet (regular, not emergency) to know how much it would cost to neutered a kitten and they told me about CAD 950-1000. Not sure if this kind of prices are normal in Vancouver but to me, prices in Ottawa right now are insanely high (vet shortage).

Hopefully I can work on a few at a time and get them brushed out- maybe I can try one of my comb with the metal teeth with the long metal stick on the end, I’m not sure what it’s called but I bet the long metal stick end might be useful breaking some of the loser dreads:) thanks again!
Hello, Sir! How is jaundice in cats treated and what is the prognosis of cats affected by it?
My cat likes to eat corn is that bad?
KGB
idk if it's ok but my cat eats a few corn kernels in the a.m. and it doesn't seem to hurt her.

I actually do want people smashing windows on Teslas, but just because Tesla's labor practices.
My wild rabbits seem to be splooting a lot in the heat, so I have been leaving a bowl of fresh water near their warren. I don't know if this helps
I'm sure it does.
Can you make a video on hairballs vs asthma wheezing
What to do when it’s 30C in the shade and the cat demands walkies … I’m the one overheating :) But, I keep a close watch and get us both indoors before it’s needed.
Thumbs up 👍🏽👍🏽
Sometimes they seek out the heat.
I'm confused on whether you should or should not put a cool wet towels on or under a cat?..a video I watched before this one said not to do that..to prevent shock?.. isn't that the same as cold packs?..
Note for me: watch again.
I keep hearing cats are smart so as long as they're not indoor cats that can't escape the heated apartment they'll make sure they stay cool.
Doc, can you talk about anal glands? Why do some cats and dogs need it? What is it and is there a way to ensure the health of them?
I could... but would anyone want to listen?
The doctor is giving a lecture on how to prevent heatstroke while Clawdia is giving a demonstration on how to clean your fingernails.
In retrospect I could have mentioned that she was actually making Mr. Pirate's fur quite damp, effectively demonstrating my advice!
