The official story Taylor has given to this song is that it's about a ghost (a dead woman) haunting the man who was obssesed with her in life who is at her wake lamenting she is gone (and in the lyrics it's heavely implied he killed her, so heavy domectic violence themes there).
BUT, as many people have correctly pointed out, this seems like a story she uses as a metaphor to talk about how Scott Borchetta, a man she loved like a father and was with her growing her musical career for 13 years (ages 15-28) betrayed her and "killed" her by not letting her buy her catalogue and sold it instead to a man Taylor hates and with whom there is very little chance of buying her songs from, all because of money.
    The lyrics are pretty clear,
"I didn't have it in myself to go with grace" about her decision to go public with all of this.
"And if I'm on fire, you'll be made of ashes, too" about how maybe she lost her old records, but she has killed Scott's reputation and has made him lose all her future music which will be very lucrative.
"'Cause I loved you, I swear I loved you, 'Til my dying day" About how he really viewed Scott as a father figure until she saw his true colours when he sold her masters to Scooter, that's the dying day.
"Cursing my name, wishing I stayed" Yeah Scott is mad but wishes above all he still had her in his label.
"You wear the same jewels that I gave you, As you bury me" The jewels represent her music that she gave him and how he was wearing it as he was at her metaphorical wake.
"Cause when I'd fight, you used to tell me I was brave" Taylor had to fight Scott A LOT on many artistic decisions. He even forced her 3rd album to be named something different than what it was in the end (she wanted Enchanted, it was named Speak Now) but on the times Taylor fought and won it turned out to be a huge win. Biggest example of this is Taylor going pop, Scott tried to change her mind in any way he could and when she didn't budge tried to convince her to do a few country songs for 1989, make the CDs pictures more country looking for the old fans, even tried to have 1989 as a finished product labelled as country when we all know it's her most pop album so her country fans thought it was like her old stuff and would buy it. Taylor had to fight him every step of the way and ended up making the most awarded pop album in history.
"And I can go anywhere I want, Anywhere I want, just not home" Obviously she is super famous so any label will have her, she can go anywhere except to the label who had her since she was 15 until she was 28, which is home.
"And when you can't sleep at night (You hear my stolen lullabies)" Pretty obvious at this point that the stolen lullabies are her stolen songs, right?
"You had to kill me, but it killed you just the same" Like yeah he may have managed to make bank selling her songs but now his reputation in the industry is destroyed and his career looking forward isn't looking that great.
"You turned into your worst fears" Scott was just starting his label when he signed Taylor, he wasn't super rich or super known back then, she was literally one of the first artists he signed and the only superstar he ever discovered. She MADE him. Pretty sure this refers to fame and money changing Scott into someone who would sell out a friend over a couple of million, since Taylor has said in the past that when she was starting out he helped her and supported her a lot, and with fame and riches he changed and turned into his worst fears, one of those rich executives that care more about money than music.
"And you're tossing out blame, drunk on this pain, Crossing out the good years" When all this came to light Scott tried to blame Taylor any way he could, and crossed out the good years they shared.
So yeah. I don't doubt the story she gave us being true but I am 1000% sure she took this woman ghost's story and used it as a metaphor to talk about her own story

Agree with a lot of this but I think the lyric "When I fight you used to tell me I was brave" has to do with the fact that Scott actually encouraged her to fight for the whole "music has value" campaign that BMR was pushing (remember the jackets he wore with that slogan?) by going up against Spotify and removing her records, penning op-eds about the value of music. They were in that battle together at one point. And she's pointing out that while they used to be on the same team, now the fight is against one another.

She's not only killed his reputation, but with her move to re record her entire catalogue she's making selling/buying her originals a incredibly terrible business move. The fearless re recording broke records all over again and streaming is going well since the fans are favouring streaming the re recorded version over the originals.
Also she owns copyright of the songs, so they can't use it for anything without her permission. She literally trapped them.

Your dissection of the lyrics is incredibly thoughtful and well explained. I too had the thought that this was about he who shall not be named. Solidified by the “stolen lullabies” reference. The lyrical stroke of her pen is truly masterful.

Well said! So proud and happy for her! He was a greedy idiot, I'm sure he was already very wealthy. Hope he thinks the $367 million (approximate) he made selling her albums was worth it.

This song is about Scott Borchetta of Big Machine Records, and how he sold her music out from under her, her stolen lullabies. Jewels she gave him, platinum and diamond album.

My Tears Ricochet is about her stolen lullabies
“I didn’t have it in myself to go with grace”- Red (State of Grace)
“You’re the hero flying around saving face”- Speak Now (Superman)
“And if I'm dead to you, why are you at the wake?”- rep (old Taylor is dead)
“Cursing my name”- Fearless (The Way I Loved You)
“wishing I stayed”- 1989 (All You Had to Do Was Stay)
“Look at how my tears ricochet”- Debut (Teardrops on my Guitar)

I take "crossing out the good years" to indicate that when a relationship has ended bitterly, it's sometimes easier for one to pretend that the entire relationship was bad, a waste of time, etc., and not acknowledge that there was something that once made the relationship worth it (the "good years"). The breakup is all the more sad because it was once earnest and true, and now it's nothing but grief.

I became a fan of hers after this one song. I didn't knew anything about her, besides the fact that she is a big star. But then I listened folklore last year (wich I did it only because everyone was talking about it), and I read her wikipedia page after my first listening. When I got to the part of "my stolen lullabies" I got shivers, because I totally conected that to her masters... I decided that I was a fan after this song. Comparing something she didn't actually went through (a divorce or an actual dead of course) with something she did, but being able to put herself in other eyes... And me being able to comprehend both sides, her side and de comparison, without english being my first language... I had no other choice. I'm a huge fan of hers now. Like, I'm pretty close of being a "stan" lmao

Omg you know that movie!! It used to be one of my favorite when I was a teenager!!
Anyway... I was waiting for your next TS video, I am so happy to watch it!
Just for you to know, the song is about Scott Borchetta. Taylor signed with him when she was 15 and they worked together until 2018. He betrayed her by selling his label (and so Taylor's whole catalogue) to Scooter Braun without letting her a chance to buy her own music. Scooter Braun played a huge part in the Kanye West phone call drama (they wanted to end Taylor's career) and Scott Borcheta knew everything that Taylor has been through with him... he wanted to hurt her by selling her music to this man.
But now she is re-recording her old catalogue :)
I can't wait for you to listen to Mirrorball, it's my favorite from folklore! Have a nice day!

The song is said to be about her relationship with her old record label that sold her masters(w/o her permission) to someone who had before tried to dismantle her career. So the stones and jewels she's talking about is her songs and albums(some songs get to the album and become famous and some songs the public doesn't get to see(the thrown stones)), she hints at it when she says stolen lullabies. And it was this huge betrayal thing because the owner of her old record label was like a father figure to her and had been with her since the very starting and she basically made the record label what it is today the label didn't even have an office when she was signed on

  • @keepyourmindopen

The relationship referenced in this song is between her and her former manager who was like a second father to her before he screwed her over in regards to her masters (her stolen lullabies.)

Such a good reaction, I love your deep dive into the lyrics and your interpretations. The first time I heard this song, I understood it in a way that the character committed a suicide and then, as a ghost, watched her partner during a funeral trying to 'save their face' in front of other mourners - because the partner knew deep down that they were to blame for the main character's death. That was a very dark take on it, now I interpret the scene depicted here much more figuratively.
Also, please listen to this song from the album in your spare time, the production really gives me goosebumps every time I hear it because it perfectly reflects the lyrics.
Regarding other artists you could react to, I'd really love to see you listen to Hozier, especially his song 'Talk' or 'Jackie and Wilson'. He's such a talented musician and songwriter, and takes inspiration from blues and jazz.

the reason why these two albums are her best lyrically in my opinion is the because she wrote most of these songs about 1 specific thing and yet everybody have a different interpretation of them ! the song is about her ex label's manager....but it could be interpreted as a a divorce/breakup song, a song about loosing a friend.......!

All her track 5's in her albums are known to be the most vulnerable songs / personal. ( ANOTHER MASTERPIECE OF A TRACK 5 IS 'ALL TOO WELL'. ALSO KNOWN AS THE SWIFTIES NATIONAL ANTHEM HAHA)
She never really said it, but all the swifties know that this is also a metaphor for her broken relationship with her label, SCOTT BORCHETTA. BASICALLY A father figure to her, she's the one he 1st signed as an indie label. She's the one who made the label successful hence the 'jewels' reference. I saw someone explain it in details so I wont explain too much haha
Track 13s in all her albums are also special to her. In FOLKLORE 13th is dedicated to her grandpa. In EVERMORE 13TH track is dedicated to her GRANDMOTHER :)

She’s one of my favourite singer/songwriters (up there with Taylor imo) but unfortunately shes had some issues with her label that meant she isn’t nearly as well known as she should be. When you talked about how a relationship you thought would be brief becomes the biggest of your life it reminded me of her song cruel summer. She hasn’t performed it live yet because of covid but if you checked out the studio version it would be great because it’s one of my fav songs on lover and talks about that. Also for the inevitable tragedy I don’t think she thinks of real life relationships she sees that way, I think that point was going off what she said about superheroes and how the villains are their former best friends.

The whole "go with grace" part and the song gives me suicide imagery. Which would explain the anger and wishing she had stayed at her wake. And would be in line with real life. She had to kill yet another "version" of herself to start this new era of re-recording.

Great analysis. It's a shame Swifties have this 'this song is about this and this only' approach to her music. I don't think she gave Scott bruscetta jewels or told him she loved him til her dying day. For me this song takes place at her funeral, literally her cremation. One of the mourners is her former lover she's been greiving for, wearing the very jewels she gave them as they stand at her coffin. The stolen lullabies are all the songs she's written for this person which now lie in the hands of others. But her tears literally ricochet, like a bullet. As a tear falls it ricochets and hits her former lover and it becomes their tears. But I think she did something to hurt this person first - tossing out blame, drunk on this pain, crossing out the good years. It's such a devastating song about loss and grief using the metaphor of her own funeral. So much more to it than the stolen masters narrative everyone seems to cling to.

did you hear taylor and Jack talking about it in the beginning? several songs from folklore and evermore are about the masters thing... for sure. jack said something about that's what the album is about. also, she is very good about double meanings. especially the folk albums... full of metaphors for the worst heartbreak in her entire life.
