I love this song so much, somehow it makes me feel Taylor's pain. This song is supposedly about her old record label and Scott Borchetta, the man who sold the label (along with Taylor's original music) to Scooter Braun.
just to add a little bit scott borchetta was with taylor since the beginning and i'm sure she thought they were close as family since he knew her since she was a kid so his betrayal probably hurt her a lot

this and daylight are my favorite songs to date.
this is in my top 3 favourite taylor songs of all time, each lyric is so perfectly emotionally evocative. she said it has two meanings, one is about a bad divorce, and the other is about how her old record label owner, someone she had trusted, betrayed her. the main idea is that it's the people who know you best and who are closest to you, who are the ones who can hurt you the most. the tears ricochet because the pain is not one-sided...both get hurt, and both feel the effect of the deterioration of the close relationship. no one leaves unscathed. in the live version she says "look at all of my tears turning into your tears".
The jewels she gave him (Scott Borchetta) were her Fearless album, which went Platinum and Diamond.
She said that she imagine a divorce, when the situation got ugly and that person who used to be your most loved one is the one who can easily destroy you cause they know your deepest secrets e weakness, but we all know that is about the label, the "stolen lullabies" gave it away
According to Taylor, this reminds her of divorce. But this is about Scott Borchetta, the head of her former label who turned against her. He had to "kill" her, by betraying her. By betraying her, he killed himself just the same. She made him rich. She was his biggest artist.

Yes it's pretty much all but been said it's about Big Machine Records and how that relationship ended with them not giving her the option to buy her masters then them turning around and selling them to Scooter. The hear my stolen lullibies line tells it all.

With what you said afterwards, I think this is the first time the lyrics of this song have really clicked in my mind. Wow it hits hard.
we would love to hear your theories too ! it doesn’t matters if it’s “wrong” lmao. this is my top 1 in her album folklore, it’s about a betrayal (how scott borchetta, the ex owner of her former record label, sold her music to someone who despised her behind her back), but people have different interpretations, a divorce, a dead narrator seeing from the afterlife how her ex is on her grave, someone breaking free from a dysfunctional/abusive family and how hard it is.
no matter the interpretation you can have, this song is one of the best song taylor has ever written, hands down
