    This is once again a great content-constructive video from Tom. Thanks for it. Also, because as a user of a Nammatj 2 I have long been very interested in the Jannu as an alternative. I will describe below why I with 188 cm height chose the Nammatj 2 as a one person tent for comfort ten years ago.
    I knew before buying that even the big tunnel tents (Keron 3/4/GT) from Hilleberg withstand strongest storms in open terrain like Hardangervidda or inland ice Greenland. A test at a big reseller in Hamburg (I’m german) with a six cm thick mat and my winter down sleeping bag showed me that I can just lie on my back in the Nammatj 2 without the foot end of the sleeping bag hitting the inner tent and threatening to get wet. This was not at all guaranteed for me in the Jannu in that side-by-side test, despite the Jannu’s longer floor length remained due to the strong slopes at the ends less usable sleeping length. Footprint wise they both were the same, inner space wise the Nammatj 2 was far better.
    I use the tents Nammatj 2 (in summer with mesh inner tent) as a one-person tent and my older Keron 3 for two in four seasons in Europe including areas as Lapland and Island.
    At the Nammatj I appreciate especially the strength of a Black Label, the small footprint, the very good interior space and the fast setup with only two poles. It is in low wind with four pegs ready in three minutes. I've had the opportunity to set up and spend nights in the Nammatj many times so far ie. on the coast lines in wind force 9 Bft (

      Hey thank you for this awesome and very detailed comment. I always want to learn how to do thinks differently and just gain extra knowledge and comments like yours really help..The experience that you have is amazing and I really appreciate you passing it on by taking the time to write so much. Its also amazing to engage someone like yourself by my video...Great to see the interest here using a two man tent for the purpose of one just like Gary and myself... I have put out a few videos regarding this and had great interest... Another on out today on the Durston x mid 2... Its totally amazing to feel in practice the differences in tent length compared to the on paper measurements...Ha ha about the zippers... The jingling noise doesn't bother me... I actually didn't cut mine off, I only ordered Hilleberg 2mm cord and added it as pulling cord... Mable though it also stops them rattling so much.. I too like the idea of the Black label fabrics and Hilleberg actually state that their strongest tents are Black Label Tunnels with double poles...
      The space difference inside the tents for two people is serious... We really noticed it sitting in the tents. I also had to leave the Jannu due to my back hurting.... so what about that...
      Regarding the tensioner straps it's complicated ha ha. On my Nammatj the strap slips though the buckle for some reason. So on the front straps I just re pegged it with the strap at max length but pulled out for good tension. On the rear as I was double pegging anyway I just put the second peg through the small loop on the strap to prevent it slipping back through the buckle... (I think this is what you are referring to).
      So after all that, my Nammatj will be on eBay tonight in favour of a Jannu as it has enough space for one and that's always how I camp. The tension on the inner is one of the main reasons. I had a good pitch here and have been out in 60mph winds in the Nammatj but the inner is too flappy for me... It flaps so much that the fabric movement caused big rushes of air over the tope of me making the inner tent extremely drafty...
      A black label Jannu gets close to the Tarra... I would make a Jannu and call it the Assault.... Same fabrics but extra pole at the rear and of Cours stretch it a little but keep the weight to 3.5kg....
      ATB and great to have your thoughts...
      Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 disappointing to hear about the tensioner straps slipping like that. I have a Macpac tent that does the same thing in rough weather but I’d assumed the Hillebergs metal tensioners would have solved it since I never hear anyone mention it but obviously not.

    Your channel content is very much appreciated - we have bought a Nammatj 3 and a Jannu in the last 4 months, mainly based on your reviews.
    By the way, 2 large neo xtherm max fit side by side in the Jannu with about 10cm to spare. Looking at the numbers looked like they wouldn’t, but they do. Might be useful info for somebody…

      We have used the Nammatj 3, 4 times camping high, had it in heavy rain and very cold conditions (no snow), not in high winds yet. Very impressed apart from the single pocket each side, but it’s a minor glitch. The sand model disappears into the scenery at 200 to 300 metres, more so than green.
      The Nammatj 3 is about the same weight as the Jannu but more roomy for 2 on longer treks. I will use the Jannu if alone.
      We will use the Jannu for two for winter stuff, where there is a risk of unexpected gnarly conditions. First trip in the Jannu will be early January.
      When I ordered the Jannu I purchased the 10mm poles too, and doubled up on the Nammatj poles in case, plus got the footprints as it makes the vestibule a lot cleaner and dryer.

    • @CKJPadventures
      @CKJPadventures 7 місяців тому +1

      Since the last comment we have camped a few more times 4000m+ using the Jannu in winter and the Nammatj 3 in better conditions. We do not go out looking for extreme weather but are prepared for it.
      Although the Jannu is "cosy" I would say that it's not an issue for active couples. Switched to 10mm poles in the Jannu and double poled the Nammatj 3 (2 x 10mm) on summits. Also used 4 delta pegs on the quadrant guy lines just in case. I don't mind the extra weight for security in exposed locations.
      The Nammatj 3 is probably a better choice for 2 if there is only a small chance of harsh weather as very roomy. If it is rocky, very cold and or extreme weather is expected the Jannu is a better choice. For 1 person use, I think the Jannu fits all round.
      Both tents are very good for wild camping where flat spots are hard to find. In most of the scenic places (summits and ridges) we target, we find sites are only just big enough to accommodate the Jannu / Nammatj footprints and the additional 1m length in the HG GTs would be an issue. If we were camping in valleys / by lakes etc GTs would work.
      We have a Tarra on order for longer high-altitude trekking trips 1 week+.
      Again, thank you for your excellent reviews which have heavily influenced the above tent choices for mountain camping.

    Great video. It’s always good to see 2 tents like this side by side in challenging conditions. For me the Jannu edges it due to the way it can be pitched from the ground up and the inner tension. The only time my tents have ever sustained any damage is either pitching in high winds or having to take them down in high winds. Thanks and looking forward to your next video.

    I used to own Nammatj however found it bit short length wise (i am 178 - still was an issue for me), and then bought Jannu, incredibly strong tent but still there is downside of porch not really usable in bad weather - I would usually end up cooking inside (boiling water). I ve owned 13 Hilleberg tents total and all I can say there is no perfect tent (cliché!), I ve got Saivo on order which should arrive early 2024, I hope this would raise the bar of "comfort" in prolonged bad weather but will limit how many miles I can do on my usual hiking trips in Lake District... compromises 😀

Very warm and to be regulated superbly in my experience. The Nammatj 2 is more the to go too as an all purpose tent and indeed fot two persons sitting in. Definitely the nammatj in my opinion. My jannu was badly damaged in December on binnian. The issue started with the webbing cutting through from the violent vibration against the pegs. The metal rings on the nammatj would have prevented this. The nammatj is noisier in the wind but in my opinion stronger

      Hey, John I watched your video the other day and will comment on it... I learned quite a lot from it so thank you for posting...really was a great video. No doubt the metal rings are a solution but so is using Tube Stakes that cant damage the straps of guy lines. I use 8 of them here and so does Gary in the Jannu. After both of watching your video we both have ordered more as the Hilleberg Y pegs could also work their way through a guy line in the wrong conditions. I am aware of this happening to others too. I also double peg and back stake so no peg can come loose. Nammatj needs 18. I take 10 extra for conditions like this... I also double poled the Nammatj here. However it was definitely no where near as windy here as on your camp.... ATB Tom

I’ve heard the rear wall can be a weak point if the wind turns in the night and starts hitting it, would be interesting to see you test this. I’ve always wanted a Jannu. After using tunnel tents for the last few years I made the switch to a Soulo. I used it in 50 mph winds (measured with my anemometer) and the difference in flappiness compared to my old Nammatj and Abisko tents was night and day. The Jannu has always looked like a brilliant tent due to the taught pitch, space and strength. Very hard to get hold of at the moment though. Great video 👍👍

      Hi... All tents have gains in some areas for sacrifices in others... It depends on your priorities. Like you say the Jannu here has less deformation in wind, not sure about the snow loading as aerodynamic profiles will flatten under snow load so the vestibule in the Jannu will deform more than the steep vestibule in the Nammatj... The Jannu is definitely much quieter in the wind but has much less space here than the Nammatj. The Jannu is also less durable due to thinner fabrics. For me though I prefer the Jannu..... I would like a four season tent to cover the worst conditions, but for that kind of money I would like a tent that would also cope better in warmer weather to get the max use out of it. Only one way to settle this Tom - round 2 in worse weather 🤣. This has the makings of Ali v Frazier 💪. On a serious note, it was really interesting to see both tents side by side in fairly challenging weather. I think both are closely matched for strength; the Jannu being a more rigid structure and the nammatj relying more on the guy lines and flexing with the wind. For 2 person use I’d take the nammatj because of its more usable internal space. For 1 person use I’d take the Jannu, based on its taught inner and more technical design. Two superb shelters, it really comes down to personal preference……do I sense a Jannu joining your fleet 🤔

  • @alaskaraftconnection-alask3397

    Seeking the 1+ person multi-terrain/multi-conditions and 4-seasons-use tent... I'd likely go with the Jannu. Structural integrity (in a versus case by case) may be debatable in terms of attention to detail and overall scenarios on set-ups (plus maintainability aspects during changing demands). The thing worthy of consideration is: The consistency factors favoring the Jannu for set-up/take-down in an all-terrain/any-environment pitch. The only feature I do not like on Jannu is the topper/lid... in truly serious, wind driving rains, snow, silt/sand, etc. this kind of feature can have issues. It's also just another thing to assemble/take-down or get lost. Weight (as modified) would be interesting data-points given Januu went with 10mm poles and Nammatj went double pole strategies.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Рік тому

      Hey thank you for your comments and thoughts... The Jannu is a good call and I agree.. Factors such as simplicity ie two poles and both the same length could be a definitive advantage in some environments... You are right about the ventilation cover having issues although vestibule into the wind reduces these.. yeah I am not sure exactly the fighting weight here of the tents in this format but not too much difference... Once again thank you for your detailed thoughts... Tom

    • @garynesbitt5078
      @garynesbitt5078 Рік тому

      Hi very good points you have raised about the vent cover. I have owned a couple of top vented Hilleberg tents, most recently the Allak. In strong rain it was almost impossible to stop rain getting pushed under the vent cover due to its “floating” design. That’s the main reason I sold it. The Jannu is very different in that the vent cover wraps over front arc pole to create a total seal so nothing can get underneath. This plus the structural strength of arc pole is why Jannu should always be pitched vestibule into wind in strong winds. On the weight query I calculate the Jannu at c. 3.3kg with the 10mm poles. Stock nammatj is 3kg. The extra pole used here probably pushes it to around c. 3.15 kg.

    If the Jannu was being tested as it comes, versus the Nammatj it might have been a different result. If you favour absolute windstability, then a Jannu is probably the better design, but it is a one person tent in real world application, and the angles are unfavourable for both vestibule and cabin. Nammatj has increased strength, durability and most of all space, at the expense of big side panels and some wind stability. But in general it is stable enough. The test seems a little biased given the Jannu has the 10mm poles honestly, somewhat skewers the comparison. If you're doing solo ascents in exposed mountainous areas, Jannu is probably for you, but I'd keep an eye on the weight increase with 10mm poles as you might enter another better tent's territory given the extra investment £££ and weight penalty. Speaking from experience. All the best (I vote Nammatj)

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Рік тому

      Hey you... The Nammatj was double polled at the windward side so neither tents stock or had a particular advantage...its a field test using our tents as we use them not a Lab test where all things are perfectly equal.... I own the Nammatj and selected it a year ago over the Jannu so I should have been biased towards it.... Ha ha I dont mean to be cheeky and great comment thank you. The Nammatj is more durable, spacious, versatile, better vented and ultimately probably stronger in high winds if double poled which is very easy and practical to do. However it flaps so much in the wind and is actually drafty in the inside due to this I find it's not comfortable. Ii use the tent as a one person shelter and this then means the Jannu has a fighting chance in this field test for conditions like this which is 90 percent of the conditions that I encounter.... Maybe I just fancy a chance ha ha.... Thank you once again for this great comment. I appreciate it.... Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 Oh I do agree with all you've said, Nammatj is a bit chilly, due to the increased volume and venting options. Far more liveable in terms of space though I feel. I've tried a Jannu and found it "okay" but I respect that for what you're doing, alone, exposed camps, you'll have the quieter, more wind stable night. But just like your Abisko reviews, you go up in weight and still compromise on the durability/lifetime of the fabric when you pick the red label. Maybe test an Allak 2 also? Simply due to the 100g weight difference...excellent model. I well understand fancying a change!!

I own the Jannu and also had an Allak 2 at the same time as the Jannu. I have since sold Allak. Allak was a great tent in terms of livability. Lots of space and 105 internal height particularly good. I did find some features of it that were not for me. It is also quite a loose inner so flaps a bit in wind. The vent cover let wind driven rain under and through vents. Also the internal doors design with zips close to centre of roof tended to let ice drop into tent in winter. My biggest issue was it’s performance in high wind. The large dome structure with 9mm poles was vulnerable to significant deformation in strong wind. I really did like the tent but not for exposed summit camping I tend to do. I replaced it with kaitum 2. In my view a very under rated tent. Less weight and much stronger if pitched correctly plus even more space 👍

      @@garynesbitt5078 The Kaitum 2 is a lovely tent, wish I'd started there. The height isn't perfect but for someone of average height like myself it's no issue. It's quite low profile which I think lends a lot to the stability. Allak 2 with 10mm poles is a fortress, but the 9's allow it to deform too easily on exposed camps as you say. Great ventilation options, I've never been hit by side wind driven rain issues, cinching the cover down may help but you might have gotten unlucky with the angle. Expensive as hell and on the heavy side, but it ticks a lot more boxes for me with the 10mm poles than the Soulo ever could. One issue with the Kaitum is the flat 4+ metre pitch....thst has been a challenge for me to find on recent excursions so I've been very grateful for the dome design, but I generally prefer everything that comes along with the kaitum/keron series

    Hilleberg has made a video on how to set up Namatj correctly in strong winds: m.ua-cam.com/video/3eFAyKMz314/v-deo.html.
    Looks like you figured it out eventually. I have both Namatj 3 and Keron 3 GT, and chose them precisely because they should be easier to set up alone in strong winds and heavy snowstorms. In the choice between the two tents you have here, I would probably go for Namatj over Jannu due to space. One more thing; I would put the vestibule against the wind with Namatj, it handles the wind better and you avoid the tent cloth pressing against the foot end and the sleeping bag.

      Hey great comments here thank you..The thing that got me here was I double poled the windward end of the tent and have only done this once before but not in a high wind set up. If It was only the one pole then I would have set the pole horizontally to protect it until I was ready to pull the tent out. As there were two poles I knew the poles didn't need protection so tried to get them to stand vertically. It was actually the wind that was pushing them back down and I couldn't get the poles into the pole cups. I checked all other reasons for the pole not seating until I eventually realises it was just the wind pressure. I have pitched vestibule into the wind before and am aware that Hilleberg recommend this... However I wanted to have the vestibule free of wind drafts and dont mind curling up to keep my sleeping bay away from rear which is getting the wind deformation... Great to hear your thoughts as you have two awesome Hillebergs. ATB Tom

      I see! My experience is that with both single and double poling, it is easiest to attach the poles horizontally. If you don't like drafts from the vestibule then you should consider getting Hilleberg to sew storm mats on the tent for you. I got it on my Keron 3 GT, which I mainly use in the winter and harsh condition here in Norway. It adds a few extra grams, but helps both with drafts and a bit with stability as well. And by the way, I like your videos here on YT! 🙂
