Ok that dog was awesome
I just did this to my at4. Pretty tough getting to those bolts. I used a dewalt flexible extension w/ 90 degree angle and another 10” extension on my impact driver. Worked out the best for me. Thanks for the idea! Love your videos
Dang- gonna have to do that too!! Glad to see some Canadian content!!! Looks great!
Looks way better black! Nice job 👍
Thanks Adam! I agree and thank you for watching!
Looks great!
Sanding tip : You may want to use a lower grit such as 100,180 or 220. You need to really rough up the chrome finish so it is dull before paint. The paint I chose does not require a primer or adhesion promotor, but using some could be best!
You could of just gone to a exhaust shop and get a real exhaust tips for your GMC- AT4
@@joeg.1119 not in this small city
Great video. Painted mine with some high heat engine enamel (Rust-Oleum) lasted 6 months now have small area of peeling. Think I'm going to get them powder coated.
Powder coating would be the longest lasting option for sure! So many environmental variables lead to paint chipping and peeling. ✌🏼
Nice 👍
Dan, I have the key fob 2 and thats the one the dealership gave me, I order another key fob from Amazon and I watched few videos how to program the new fob and it doesn't work the way the video shows. Please post a video with better directions, your videos are so easy to understand. Thank you!
Smart dog!
What do you recommend for painting side steppers they are chrome I want to paint the black
Smart dog👍
Hi, how soon can I drive after the last coat?
I went to a exhaust shop and bought some real exhaust tips for my trail boss silverado
Those really look much better than the chrome 😍
Powder coating would be the most durable, but at the time covid restrictions (here) were in full force and in this small city no one was available.
@Donslife Today while at our local GMC dealership, the service manager recommended a tent shop that they send their vehicles to for PPF (this local dealership is doing a courtesy delivery, we ordered our truck from a dealership in TN delivered to CA...anyway) the owner of this tent shop recommended the powder coating when I mentioned that we'd like to black out the chrome. 👍✨️
the ole hot dog in the tail pipe trick....... LOL lol
Hey, Let’s keep the talk clean 🧼
New AT4 on order. May have to try painting after running these through a media blaster
Mine held up and since then I have installed a new exhaust and tips. Media blasting and a primer would be better for the long haul. Honestly if I did it again, I would just use Hyperdip. They don’t get nearly as hot as I thought they would and some people have tried it and told me it works great. No blasting, sanding or scuffing.
@@Donslife thanks for that tip. That sounds easier. I haven’t checked GM parts yet but they did offer the black “HDMI port” tips with the carbon pro package- not sure if they sell as a stand alone item. But hyper dip sounds like a great option
Did the same on my exhaust pipes and paint peeled of in next day, do you think that paint is good for such temperature?
Mine is still holding on. Humidity while painting can play a part in the curing. Honestly since the tips aren’t part of the exhaust, mine don’t seem to get too warm. Based on that, I would probably do the following for a better result:
Sand with 180, scratch them up more. A wire brush drill tip can do wonders too.
Use a direct to metal primer.
Use a paint of your choice for automotive applications. Rustoleum, Tremclad, etc. Depending where you live different brands are available.
Did you have to remove the black steps on bumper to get to the top 2 bolts?
No I didn’t. I was able to get my air ratchet fished in there. Bit of a pain and removing the plastic corner steps would help with access
Why did you chose not to use primer and clearcoat? I was getting ready to paint my attached tailpipes gloss black and wanted to do it in a way that doesn't result in future cracking/peeling.
The paint I used had a built in primer. I would still recommend a primer but you might want a high heat version. Powder coating will be better but more costly
Hey Donslife I did the same as what you did for painting my tips on my 2020 gmc. But after 2 weeks it is starting to peel off I used and done everything you did. Would you know my issue? Any info would be great please. Also I been learning some stuff from you. Great work.
Sorry to hear Jade. Usually paint adhesion issues are from the following: Surface has insufficient surface tension: sand more, try using a 180 or 220 first. A wire brush drill tip can scratch up the surface well too. For any major scratches use a 320 or 400 grit to clean them up so they don’t show through the primer.
Second issue could be the primer isn’t working well on bare metal. A DTM (direct to metal) primer or and etching primer should work.
Also too much humidity will inhibit the paint from coalescing or bonding with strength.
Light coats with the primer first is critical in many cases. If you only have some spots peeling, you can probably sand down or wire brush those then, prime those spots, lightly and all of it, wipe it clean and give it all some new top coats.
Thanks for the info I used the tremclad paint high heat.mind you I waited 5 minutes between coats maybe that wasn't enough? With that paint I probably don't need primer right? Also start with a light coat?
If you are using the same paint, you shouldn’t need a primer. Maybe sand deeper, it certainly won’t hurt. Pay most attention to where the first peeling occurred. Apply some ‘tack’ coats with more dry time in between maybe. You could do a primer still. Might be better for long term. I have my new exhaust coming soon that will eliminate the factory tips, so I probably won’t know if they will last years with that paint.
Nice job , how does it hold up against road salt and snow ?
Not sure. I have an aftermarket exhaust now which replaced the tips.
So how’s the paint? Is it still holding up after this long? Love your vids btw. I have a black sierra AT4 and it definitely needs some more blackening in places but I like the splash of red here and there. Not sure what to do with the badges as blacking them out may be too much.
Thanks for the support! I can’t say for sure how they held up since I replaced the exhaust and tips with a Borla system. If I did it again on the cheap and couldn’t get them powder coated, I would just use HyperDip or PlastiDip. They shrouds don’t seem to get to hot.
@@Donslife thanks for the info. I used some Rustoleum ultra high heat paint on them. Didn’t have an air ratchet so I had to take the step out. But they look way better now. Is there a video with the way the new tips look? I really do like the rectangular tips and it would have to look really good to wanna change them.

@@Donslife I have to quit watching your vids or my ass is gonna end up getting divorced or broke and homeless! And you have the cold air intake I’m looking at as well. Wow, the truck sounds nice! Good to know it’s not crazy loud in the cab as that was a concern. Thanks for the reply Don!
Hi! Do you think I can put exhaust tips into the sandblaster and then paint them? It won't destroy them?
Would depend on the sandblasting method, but it could turn out really good! Mine are holding up but I would use a primer if I did it again and sand heavier.
@@Donslife Thanks!
Hey Don. Love the video. Where did you buy the Tremclad ?
Canadian Tire 😂
For the record, more sanding with a heavier grit is the best prep if you decide to paint. Otherwise a sandblaster and powder coating will last longer but cost more
@Donslife I will keep that in mind. Thank you sir..
Do you have any treats inside those tips😂 beautiful dog
Secrets
@Donslife Do you know rhe size of the exhaust pipe to install an exhaust tip?
2.5" openings hidden behind the HDMI shaped covers (they don't touch either)
we all know you hid a doggie treat in the exhaust to get dog to go after it. lol
Did you take the Sierra badge off of the back?
I have the same truck, Summit White but with the 3.0. Definitely interested in what you have going on with yours.
Yes Sir! I felt it was just too much noise
what size rachet did you use?
You'll need a 7 mm and a 10 mm socket. You'll need a T15 torx to take off the steps on the sides of the bumper.
You’re great man 😂😂😂😂 “epic, fantastic” even
😂 I am a fool
Looks really nice.....how has the paint held up over the past few months? Mind sharing some current pics? If you DM me I can send you my email......I just picked up a Trail Boss and want to do this to the chrome tips but unsure on matte black vs gloss black
I have my channel email in every video description
@@Donslife whoops I missed that. Just sent you an email, thanks!
3/8 or 1/4 inch rachet?
It was a 3/8 air ratchet. You can use a normal ratchet but you’ll hate your life. One tip someone shared on a forum was popping out the side steps from inside the bumper. Then the tips are very accessible
How's are they holding up now??
Impossible to say. They are gone. I replaced the exhaust about 6-8 months later
That’s funny, my dog said the same thing about my exhaust tips. It could have been the 2 kilos of cocaine in my trunk though.
7 months in, can we get an update on how they're holding? Possibly even a picture?
Sorry, I removed them when I installed my Borla exhaust. On the inside of one there was a small amount of wear. It would probably have been due for a touch up this fall
Great video! I belive going for a black round tips would make it look nicer. Those rectangular chrome tips are not for this car
I have quad round tips now with my Borla S-Type exhaust
@@Donslife which tips have you used?

I'm planning on doing the same. The Chrome just doesn't go on this theme
Maybe try plasti dip or hyperdip. I learned after the tips don’t get too hot and you can save yourself some prep time
Don't do this if you use any color than black. I just color matched mine white with clear coat and within a day the hot exhaust burns the paint. THESE TIPS DO GET HOT
Do they make BBQ clear paint?
Or buy the black ones. Not trying to sound rude, just saying that not everyone has the equipment to do this.
For sure! This is intended for people that may want to.
Respectfully..can’t paint on chrome.. I’ve tried everything, it will peel or have rock chip in it..
Better surface area
Even she knows😂😂
Very smart Dog!
I think he put a doggy treat in there! You saw her using her paws trying to pull it out whatever was in there 🤣
You could of just gone to a exhaust shop and get a real exhaust tips for your GMC- AT4
You barely showed us the final result!
I would be glad to share some more via email or something! Sorry about that 😞
@@Donslife all good. Would have liked to seen a better shot of them installed. Great job painting those
I just realized I have a slow motion shot on my phone that didn’t get edited into the video! Live and learn. Thanks for the support!
@@Donslife I like diy videos more than anything. Thanks for the tips to uninstall those exhaust tips.
Anytime, and if you have any requests or questions, let me know!
Take the Hdmi tips off. They don't belong.
Was always the plan. Had to wait 3 months for the exhaust. Here is the video description:

Didn’t even show a good picture of the finished product….🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
I know. Brutal amateur UA-cam creator 🤦🏻♂️ x 4
You did a good job but I will never understand people who black out the chrome on a bright white vehicle. Seems counter-intuitive.
