sounds like he wasnt a pleasant guy to work for... on the other hand it sounds like DW Was using the deal Hendrick offered him to try to goad Junior into giving him a raise
This was an emotional win for DW. He has told this story before. His first daughter was born in 1987. On the morning of this race, there was a flower in a vase and a note that said, ''Win this one for me daddy'' inside the seat of Darrell's car.
In addition to NASCAR, SETN was also in talks with both CART & F1 to air a few races from both of those series. However with F1, the deal was nixed once Bernie Ecclestone found out that SETN would be airing races on tape delay & felt as though sticking with live races on ESPN was the better option in terms of growing F1 in the US. Then with CART, they rejected the SETN deal because they did not want to anger both NBC & ABC (both of which aired CART races at the time) & potentially lose network TV revenue. The failure to get these two deals along with ESPN taking the lions share of motorsports content & poor cash flow are what ultimately killed SETN in 1988.
SETN wasnt a television "network." They were a production company (founded by Pat Patterson i believe) that would syndicate the races to individual TV channels. Like here in Atlanta, they were shown on WUPA Channel 69, which was independant of ant network affiliation.
This is controversial???... 1986 Richmond says "Hi." 😆 Also I wonder how you'd cover the 2006 Nashville Truck race then _(If it ever gets uploaded in full)._
That's the first I have heard of that Network. And I have been watching the sports since the mid 80s. And these fans complain about the TV contract now. LOL
"Terry got a little sideways, and I bumped him, and that was that!" Got the order mixed up there, big guy. You "bumped" him, and then he got a "little" sideways. But a bump into the rear quarter of a car is also known as the precision immobilization technique. The fans want to see drama so nothing was going to be done to curtail this behavior.
Is it just me or does Martinsville always look SUPER wide in all these old telecasts? Did they take a lane or two away when they reconfigured pit road?
Back when racing was boring. Start and parks existed. 3 cars on the lead lap. 4th place 20 laps down. That wasn't racing, that was back when you could get away with running a big block and still credited with the win.
@@GiveMeLibertyOrGiveMeDeath147 You are entitled to your opinion, but you are wrong. The racing now is boring. What are you talking about? It is the same three or four teams winning almost every race now. Back in the 80s, most teams had one or two cars at most. Now, there are four cars for some teams. The big block? Junior Johnson must’ve been pissed seeing Darrell win at Hendrick
If memory serves me right. DW compared driving Juniors and Hendrick cars as like driving a chevy to a Cadilac.

Every source I found said that SETN also did IHRA events too, and promoters were concernd about gate receipts being hurt by live events as well
you'd think with the amount of european races in f1, broadcasting the races on delay in the US would be fine, timezones and all that
The 1987 Monte Carlo SS Aero Coupe was so beautiful! When I think of a NASCAR stock car I think of this car.
I was there! Couldn't hear for a week from ears ringing. That place is Loud!
Learned that lesson when I went in the fall of '21!
And this is why Martinsville will always be legendary (or notorious)
