If you think this is confusing you are NOT ready for space age bachelor man. But I think the "thing" is that they're expressing who they dreamt they were/what they wanted to be even if it wasn't realistic. Their songs are about their aspirations and personalities/their TRUE selves. And Noel's whole thing was he craved tragedy because he lived in a place where he was unable to express himself (he's the only gay man in a small rural town) so to him this tragic dramatic life he came up with (influenced by his love of French new wave cinema) is preferable to the apathy he feels being forced to suppress his passions and real personality
Noel is a character who enjoys the concept of a tragic life. He’s the only gay guy in Uranium, and he loves poetry & drama. He wants to live as a French hooker because this persona of his (Monique) has an extremely tragic life that to him has a kind of charm. You really have to watch the musical to understand how the songs fit together, since without context, they make no sense…prepare yourself for Space Age Bachelor Man.
It's even funnier when you realize Space Age Bachelor Man and The Ballad of Jane Doe are back to back, so you get her somber ballad right after all the craziness
Noel’s song is so interesting as it shows how he was so bored by his day-to-day life that he would do anything for just a taste of sorrow or any emotion other than boredom, his wanting to be a hooker in post-war France and how he describes that life shows that his dream is living day to day not knowing if today is his last and choosing not to care he wants to live a life that’s tragic and messy because anything is better then what he has now
Kholby Wardell, who plays Noel, was in the very first iteration of this musical back in 2008! He was Noel in every single professional production up until 2019 plus the official cast recording, and this song was the least changed of all of them. So he perfected this number for over 10 years! He informed the character as much as the writers did by that point.
yeahhh, this musical is WILD without context - i mean, it's pretty wild WITH context too. you essentially got the gist of it: they're all dead, and fighting for who gets to come back to life, by singing about who they truly were in their soul rather than who they ended up being in life. in his life, noel (pronounced like "knoll") was a taco bell worker who was made to repress his more dramatic and flamboyant personality for the sake of fitting in his small town - in his dreams, noel was, as you just witnessed, monique gibeau, an intensely dramatic and tragic character. my personal favourite song from this whole show is "space age bachelor man", though it's... QUITE strange, so brace yourself if you watch that one. "sugar cloud" is another absolute banger, as is "what the world needs". if you're ok with back-to-back reactions, i'm going to gently suggest that you watch "this song is awesome" and "talia", but ONLY if you watch them back to back. they're two different songs sung by the same character, and you absolutely won't get the same effect or understanding of who he is if you only watch one. it's up to you, though, obviously! tl;dr this is probably my favourite musical right now and every single number is absolutely phenomenal, so i'd recommend just watching All Of Them. there's a good few slime tutorials floating around too, if that's something you'd be interested in. i can't recommend this musical enough.
the very first time i was exposed to ride the cyclone was through my friend playing this song is awesome followed by talia,,,, that was the most intense emotional whiplash ive ever experienced, highly recommended
In a way, Noel and Ricky have both submerged themselves in their fantasy lives for their numbers. Ocean and Mischa's songs (or Mischa's FIRST song) are very straightforward "This is why I'm the best" numbers, Jane Doe's is creepy musings on the state of existence, Constance's song is her finding the good in life now that it's over. But Noel wishes his life was a French New Wave tragedy because it's glamorous and fascinating and camp while in real life he's the only gay kid in a tiny nowhere town and works at a Taco Bell. Ricky has made up an entire imaginary universe based on classic pulp Sci-Fi to exist in to make up for his life of disability and neglect. Of all the songs, really only Ocean's "What the World Needs" is an open, straightforward case for her winning the 'competition' of coming back to life (AFTER which Karnak reveals the rest of the rules that the winner needs a unanimous vote). After Mischa's "This Song is Awesome" is performed Karnak starts to prod a little more and get under the surface with them, at times with magical influence that forces them to reveal their secrets and uncover hidden truths, leading to Mischa's SECOND song "Talia" where he's actually vulnerable and goes into what he really dreams about. One really funny part of the cast album is where Karnak mentions that if someone were actually at the show they'd have a better idea what was going on during "Talia", so that's a good motivation to see the show, right?
I wonder if part of this is because, I'm not sure the original version of the show features a competition? This show was reworked a LOT before it got to this production - there's video from the 2013 version of the opening (ua-cam.com/video/uUn7yg4rOL4/v-deo.html) where Karnak describes the show as "an apology by way of a concert - the last concert of the St. Cassian Chamber Choir". So there may not have even been a competition storyline when most of the songs were written. More evidence for this is that Ocean's song was the one revised the most. This quote from the Playbill track-by-track breakdown suggests this: "As mentioned earlier, Ocean could have an entire show of songs we cut from the show. She at one point used to sing a Marxist gospel number with a Karl Marx puppet. She’s had a Tin Pan Alley, almost tap routine, but none of it felt like the genre for our modern alpha teen. Brooke and I were on the Navy Pier at Chicago Shakes during the summer rewriting Ocean’s number, again. It was boiling hot in the most touristy part of Chicago, and especially packed because of an airshow, so the sound of fighter jets and pop music rang through the air. Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” was playing and we decided there and then that her song should be T-Swift pop, but with really aggressive lyrics." So while Ocean's song matches up with the competition storyline, the rest were likely conceived as simple experimental self-expression pieces.
4:15 Yeah, according to one of the creators on Noel's Lament, "Oddly enough when we initially wrote this song, I wasn’t sure if it would make it. [...] I was worried that introducing a character who introduces you to another character that they’ve made up might be a bit too meta. And then Kholby Wardell auditioned, and absolutely crushed this tribute to Édith Piaf, Anaïs Nin, and Marlene Dietrich. And so it remained. This is the song that’s probably changed the least since it was first written. It also freed us early on from the constraint that Ride the Cyclone had to be an evening of autobiographical tunes, opening up the possibility that what might be just as engaging are songs that the kids themselves would want to be remembered singing."
you missed the part where he said post war France😂 basically it’s about how he would escape his “boring” life into this fantasy where he was a sex worker in 1940’s ish France. it was a life filled with drama and tragedy which was appealing to him. that’s how I interpret it anyway
This is definitely a show where context is needed and provides a richer experience. Just know that for each song it’d a dive into their true selves so they’re all gonna be radically different cause they were a weird bunch of kids who never really got to know each other till the afterlife, with Jane literally unable to connect due to not having any knowledge about her inner life. Like I said in a previous video, Sugarcloud is a solid track in this regard, when paired with the phenomenal monologue that proceeds/ sets it up, as is This Song is Awesome/Talia (these NEED to be listened together to get a grasp on Mischas character and dichotomy. I’m glad you’re covering more of this. This is such an underrated gem and I’m glad more eyes are coming to it
I recommend watching "fall fair suite" from the same musical, as it sort of explains what happened to the group. it's at the top of the musical, and it was changed in the album to "uranium suite." if I'm honest I'd love to watch you react to the entire show all the way through, simply because it's so genuinely enjoyable :) context is everything here lmao
I think the opening number(s) went through a lot of changes. When I saw the show in 2013, the show opened with "Uranium" and it's very similar, if not almost identical, to the album - well, at least to a point. It changes when it shifts from their 'performance' to, I guess when they first realize they are in limbo and something is off/where they are riding the cyclone. In the version I saw it was called "Tragic Fact" in this one it's "Waiting for the drop" on the album it's just "Uranium Suite". I wouldn't be surprised if there was another opening number that had been used/cut/changed that there aren't any recordings of. You can see the version I saw of "Uranium/Tragic Fact" on UA-cam.
"Is this like an inverse Cats" YOU ARE NOT WRONG. The kids are in theory competing to see which one of them will be brought back to life. Each kid gets a number (or in Mischa's case two numbers back to back that show the dichotomy of his character) to express their character. They start off pretty shallow and get progressively deeper as we go through the cast and learn about their inner selves. The Ballad of Jane Doe is effectively the Memory of the musical- the big show stopper that is just one solid cry for help. I've spent most of my life around Art and Theater kids so Noel's number was the most familiar to me lmao. Boy is just using the fantasy of Drama and Angst to get through the humdrum of small town life. Of course you can dig deeper and unearth more Meaning once you know more about him but that is the gist.
Oh, I can't WAIT for you to hopefully react to the rest of this musical! Sugarcloud is a favorite of mine, and I am positive you'll find Space Age Bachelor Man.... Interesting.
Oh yeah your gonna be absolutely whiplashed when you listen and watch space age bachelor man especially because in the musical it got straight from Talia to space age bachelor man and then straight into the ballad of Jane doe. I was absolutely flabbergasted when i saw space age bachelor man💀
Typhoid Flu is a real disease, but there’s already a cure for it. Also, they somewhat do sing about their dreams. Like for example, Jane Doe wishes to know who she is and everything about herself that she knew before death and while everyone else got to keep the knowledge of who they are, hers was taken away. And the moral of her song is “it’s important to know who you are”.
Thank you for another Ride the Cyclone reaction! Like others have said, if you want to, I definitely recommend watching the whole show (recorded or not). Funnily enough, your comment about Noel's song not representing his life as it actually was is something that another character in the show comments on as well. If you need any suggestions, I recommend Fall Fair Suite and This Song is Awesome/Talia. The last two are technically separate songs but I feel they're inextricable as they're sang by the same character and give a broader perspective on him.
Tw; vomit Noel was obsessed with tragedy in his life, relying on french films in his life. He always imagined himself a hooker, and he wanted to die tragically (like in an alley.) He also made earlier statements: “I wanted bad love,” “I wanted to wake up in an alley soaked in my own vomit!” I hope this helped anyone lost with this :)
i vote you listen to "Talia" next! Its my absolute favorite song from the musical though its one of the shorter one i suggest you also listen to "This song is awesome" first because talia is a direct follow up sung by the same guy and adds a bit of context to the last bit of talia music wise
I recommend checking out both This Song is Awesome and Talia in one reaction (Talia is the one everyone is suggesting but it’s a continuation of This Song is Awesome and both are pretty important as they represent the image the character presents and then who he really is)
Just coming back here because I want to add to the storm of people begging you to react to space age bachelor man, the tonal shift is wild considering it’s directly before ballad of Jane doe.
Ohh if you think THIS song is confusing. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY NOT READY FOR SPACE AGE BACHELOR MAN! its seriously so good though!! I hope u watch Ride the Cyclone soon!
Interesting fact like the other songs thier were instrumental playing like in musicals but the act for Ricky knew how to play the accordion so he played the music
If you want some kind of context I’d totally recommend watching Fall Fair suite next! But if you want something even crazier I’d recommend Space Age bachelor man
For any one who wants to know (and I'm sorry if some one already said it in this comment section) the thing their chanting at the end is; Broken hearts a flask of gin Tattooed with a safety pin Teeth all stained with Nicole Running nylons broken dreams Supper crusty holy terror Wild eyes and black mascara
Everyone is saying to do Space Age Bachelor Man next but I think you will only be more confuse... I mean is an amazing song but I am think "What the World Needs" is the one you should do next because is more... Grounded. It can also give you more context
Yeah ride the cyclone is about the kids talking about they're dreams, Karnak says at the start "tonight I wish to show you not who they were perceived to be but who they wished they were" they are all telling their storys but Jane doesn't have a story she doesn't remember her life or her name that's why her song is like that.
yeah without context this number is a bit confusing, and it comes in immediately after ocean's deceptively peppy number "what the world needs" and is followed by mischa's first song (he's the only one in the show who gets two songs focused on him, unless you count "every story has a lesson," which i personally don't bc other characters have lines during it) talking about how awesome he is, followed AGAIN by his song "talia" which is a moving number full of longing for the love he never got to meet in life, followed by space age bachelor man, followed by the ballad of jane doe, and finally sugar cloud the musical is, if you'll forgive the pun, an emotional roller coaster sidenote: if you react to sugar cloud (which is, in my opinion, one of the best songs in the show) i recommend watching it with the monologue constance does before it. it adds an extra layer of depth to the text of the song
Plz react to fall fair suite and talia both from ride the cyclone! Fall fair suite gives much more context to the whole play and talia is a wonderful song abt romance
The uranium suite is also a good context song but it focuses more on the actual town of uranium than of what happened to them both fall fair suite and the uranium suite are great imo tho!
Ride the cyclone is absolutely amazing with how all the songs fit together to tell the story, most of them do not make any sense without context. If you want a song that makes sense with the knowledge you have from watching Ballad of Jane Doe, “What the World Needs” will fit right in with your preconceived concept of what the show’s about.
Honestly I'd recommend just watching/reacting to the show (obviously a full length reaction is not possible because of copyright stuff but still) Most of the songs are like Noel's Lament where they need context or they're enhanced and benefitted by context It's also just such a funny show and a lot of the songs don't put Ride The Cyclone's comedy on display (except for How the World Works, This Song Is Awesome, Space Age Bachelor Man) because the songs are more for emotional beats of the show
the thing is each songs represent the dreams and aspirations of the characters, jane doe is so dramatic and sad cus nobody know who she is so nobody know her dreams and aspirations therefore its just her questioning her death and what it could mean to her, the rest all know who they are and their dreams and personalities, so every other songs in "ride the cyclone" is pretty much "noel's lament" and not close at all to "the ballad of jane doe"
if you think this was chaotic and confusing just wait til you listen to space age bachelor man! and yeah this is definitely a song you need more context to understand fully, but it's also still weird in context. in a good way though. they don't have to sing about anything specific, the songs are to try to convince the others that they're the one who should come back to life, so they mostly sing about their lives, their dreams, their ideologies, and who they wished they had been.
please watch space age bachelor man or what the world needs next, trust me I want to see more of the confused bewilderment of someone who's never fully seen RTC before :)
I think you should at least look at the other character specific songs! What The World Needs for Ocean, This Song Is Awesome and Talia for Mischa, Space Age Bachelor Man for Ricky, and Sugar Cloud (preferably with the monologue) for Constance!
we are begging for a reaction to spage age bachelor man please it is so absolutely unhinged I also highly recommend Talia (as its my favorite) it’s basically a ukrainian love ballad and its AMAZING
As much as I want to see you react to What The World Needs or Fall Fair Suite, I feel like what I need is to see you react to Space Age Bachleor Man yxrublrzhvktxj
ride the cyclone is very much a show where you need the full context to truly enjoy it, so i'd recommend watching the whole thing if given the chance- that being said, if you think noel's lament is wild compared to the ballad of jane doe, you simply MUST watch space age bachelor man
So i would like to propose some of the numbers to you but all of them a absolutely fantastic so you should watch all, but the funniest i my opinion are space age bachelor man and this song is awsome
Don't worry, it just gets weirder. I would say react to Space Age Bachelor Man, but you're probably not ready for that, so I would say you should react to What the World Needs or Talia
If you think this is confusing you are NOT ready for space age bachelor man. But I think the "thing" is that they're expressing who they dreamt they were/what they wanted to be even if it wasn't realistic. You really have to watch the musical to understand how the songs fit together, since without context, they make no sense…prepare yourself for Space Age Bachelor Man.
As quoted by Karnak in the musical, “Im under the firm impression that it can always get weirder.”
* cough * Space Age Bachelor Man * cough *
4:27 "It could not be more different from The Ballad of Jane Doe"
Oh but it can, it really can. You haven't seen Space Age Bachelor Man yet.
I WAS LITERALLY SAYING OML- HONESTLY! Like he thinks this is chaotic?? Just wait fr
It's even funnier when you realize Space Age Bachelor Man and The Ballad of Jane Doe are back to back, so you get her somber ballad right after all the craziness
This show gives some supreme whiplash
@@elizabethk007trueeeee 😂😂
Giving "but it CAN get weirder!"
Noel’s song is so interesting as it shows how he was so bored by his day-to-day life that he would do anything for just a taste of sorrow
or any emotion other than boredom, his wanting to be a hooker in post-war France and how he describes that life shows that his dream is living day to day not knowing if today is his last and choosing not to care he wants to live a life that’s tragic and messy because anything is better then what he has now

Basically In this song, Noel doesn’t feel like his life is good enough to sing about, so instead he sings about his fantasy.
yeahhh, this musical is WILD without context - i mean, it's pretty wild WITH context too. you essentially got the gist of it: they're all dead, and fighting for who gets to come back to life, by singing about who they truly were in their soul rather than who they ended up being in life. in his life, noel (pronounced like "knoll") was a taco bell worker who was made to repress his more dramatic and flamboyant personality for the sake of fitting in his small town - in his dreams, noel was, as you just witnessed, monique gibeau, an intensely dramatic and tragic character.

They’re fighting to come back to life? So kinda like cats? Except the opposite concept?
@@sunsetskye483 ...kinda, yeah! "cats but not" is a fairly common way of explaining this musical to people
the very first time i was exposed to ride the cyclone was through my friend playing this song is awesome followed by talia,,,, that was the most intense emotional whiplash ive ever experienced, highly recommended
Everyone telling you to listen to Space Age Bachelor Man is correct. It's the song RIGHT before the Ballad of Jane Doe and the tonal shift is insane.
In a way, Noel and Ricky have both submerged themselves in their fantasy lives for their numbers. This quote from the Playbill track-by-track breakdown suggests this:

Everyone is saying to do Space Age Bachelor Man next but I think you will only be more confuse... I mean is an amazing song but I am think "What the World Needs" is the one you should do next because is more... Grounded. It can also give you more context
omg you gotta do "Talia" next!!!
Stories* Not hating on you, just trying to help.
You really need to see Space Age Bachelor Man! You would love it! It’s chaotic and fun!
I suggest if you do the song "sugarcloud" try too find a video that has the monologue before the song
someone get this man to watch space age bachelor man
yeah without context this number is a bit confusing, and it comes in immediately after ocean's deceptively peppy number "what the world needs" and is followed by mischa's first song (he's the only one in the show who gets two songs focused on him, unless you count "every story has a lesson," which i personally don't bc other characters have lines during it) talking about how awesome he is, followed AGAIN by his song "talia" which is a moving number full of longing for the love he never got to meet in life, followed by space age bachelor man, followed by the ballad of jane doe, and finally sugar cloud
the musical is, if you'll forgive the pun, an emotional roller coaster
sidenote: if you react to sugar cloud (which is, in my opinion, one of the best songs in the show) i recommend watching it with the monologue constance does before it. it adds an extra layer of depth to the text of the song
Reverse cats is a good way to describe it, yeah. They can all sing about whatever they want
giggling so hard at my name being censored
you have to watch the entire show please, it's so good
Space age bachelor man is one you definitely need to see it’s wild !
Ride the cyclone is absolutely amazing with how all the songs fit together to tell the story, most of them do not make any sense without context. If you want a song that makes sense with the knowledge you have from watching Ballad of Jane Doe, “What the World Needs” will fit right in with your preconceived concept of what the show’s about.
you should react to what the world needs! or fall fair suite! they’re two of the best songs.
Definitely need to listen to space bachelor man and talia. Talia and the ballad of Jane doe are somewhat similar
POV: you check the comments and EVERYBODY is begging for a space age bachelor man reaction lol
8:20 Space age bachelor man is way more chaotic dont worry
Please do more!! If u think that this is wild space age bachelor man is ever crazier
Pls do Space Age Bachelor Man next. I love the show and the songs and characters.
believe anyone who suggests talia or sugar cloud next those songs are SPLENDID
You should watch Fall fair suite, it is the opening number and gives the basic premise
please watch space age bachelor man or what the world needs next, trust me I want to see more of the confused bewilderment of someone who's never fully seen RTC before :)
I think you should at least look at the other character specific songs! What The World Needs for Ocean, This Song Is Awesome and Talia for Mischa, Space Age Bachelor Man for Ricky, and Sugar Cloud (preferably with the monologue) for Constance!
I need you to react to talia, that song gets me sobbing every time
You NEED to react to Fall Fair suite from ride the Cyclone
I agree that you should very much either watch fall fair suite or what the world needs!! it could provide a better context to what you're watching!!
please do space age bachelor man or what the world needs
i pray for the day he watches space age bachelor man
“This could not be any more different” you haven’t heard space bachelor man and this song is awesome yet 💀💀
Definitely listen to talia and this some is awesome next. Sang by the same character yet they couldn’t be any more different it’s hilarious
You should react to Fall Fair Suit before Space Age Bachelor Man, a little breath of "seriousness" before the craziness again
You should watch this song is awesome and talia in one video!!
we are begging for a reaction to spage age bachelor man please it is so absolutely unhinged
I also highly recommend Talia (as its my favorite) it’s basically a ukrainian love ballad and its AMAZING
As much as I want to see you react to What The World Needs or Fall Fair Suite, I feel like what I need is to see you react to Space Age Bachleor Man yxrublrzhvktxj
You should react to the opening song "fall fair suite" its the introduction to what's happening
ride the cyclone is very much a show where you need the full context to truly enjoy it, so i'd recommend watching the whole thing if given the chance-
that being said, if you think noel's lament is wild compared to the ballad of jane doe, you simply MUST watch space age bachelor man
please react to Dpace Age Bachelor Man, or Talia. Both are really worth a watch
So i would like to propose some of the numbers to you but all of them a absolutely fantastic so you should watch all, but the funniest i my opinion are space age bachelor man and this song is awsome
Watch space age batcholor man from the same musical
listen to "space age bachlor man"! it's even weirder than noel's lament!
you should react to what the world needs from rtc lmao
Too bad you didn't make the "Reverse -Cats" connection while reacting to Space Age Bachelor Man. That would've been great.
sugar cloud do sugar cloud please i am begging
Don't worry, it just gets weirder. I would say react to Space Age Bachelor Man, but you're probably not ready for that, so I would say you should react to What the World Needs or Talia
PLEASE react to space age bachelor man..Cause that song TRULY is the opposite of the ballad of jane doe
Please do Talia from ride the cyclone next!!
Can u pls react to the song Talia in this show, it is a rlly good song
space age bachelor man is very… well… hm
If I’m being totally honest you should watch the whole show and cut it up into different videos
can you please react to glee singing i believe i can fly it is really good.
Maaaan, you think THIS was confusing? Watch Space Age Bachelor Man. Thet's what REALLY confusing! You won't regret it (or maybe you will, who knows)
