Some could say their was a similar situation back in the Transformers Prime animated series. In that show, Wheeljack looked like his G1 counterpart but his personality was different. G1 Wheeljack was an enthusiast engineer while Prime Wheeljack was an angsty warrior.
the problem is not designed itself but for people like me that’s why the fact that bumblebee, Optimus prime, and arcee still look at least for their heads like the ones from bumblebee which this film is ment be a sequel to this isn’t like complaining they redesigned the character for a whole new universe it’s more questioning why the designs for wheeljack head don’t match up between two films in the same universe
This really shouldn't matter for Wheeljack, who had two seconds of screentime and one line in Bumblebee. It makes sense for the actually important characters like Bumblebee and Optimus Prime to still look recognizable from film to film, since they're the lead robots (having Arcee look similar is a bonus). And Transformers already has a history of characters radically changing their designs in the same continuity (Beast Wars/Machines and Unicorn Trilogy)
My problem is wheelJack has one of the most unique heads out of all transformers that being the slinky mouth with the two glowing fins on the side of his head take those away and he’s just another generic robot with goggles if this was just a full unique character or even preceptor, I would’ve been fine, but this is a wheeljack who has I said, has one of the most unique heads out of all that you want cast and take him out away from kind of makes him less unique. It just kind of feels like they made the most generic, nerd looking head, they possibly could. Also, Beast wars didn’t make you wait five years and explained why the characters look different and would sometimes keep the primary things that make them unique and the unicorn trilogy was in my opinion three unrelated toy lines all slept together as a trilogy similar through I don’t think the Cybertron games and prime as a example of changing designs in the same universe because as we all know, those are two different things that Hasbro force to be connected.
@@roguewinters I get what you mean, but wouldn't having a consistent design even for a character that appears for two seconds of the previous movie creates a stronger bond for audience members to recognize him from Bumblebee going in to Rise of the Beasts? With them getting a greater appreciation and background for Wheeljack in general and for the people who only seen Rise of The Beast can go back and see he's in Bumblebee. Allowing them to see two "great" movies and to have paramount and Hasbro to has more money in their pockets.
@@roguewinters The Unicorn trilogy was 3 different shows . Even though connected through the story , they had different animation styles . But it's not correct to compare to a movie . The main point of any movie is to take you into its world , to use some this movie magic . As far as we concerned - everything that happens on the screen is real . Especially when a movie (surprisingly ) has real life shots . But when something similar to WheelJacks head happens , it breaks the illusion of the movie .
True. But saying that we should be happy with new interpretations of characters with different design elements is exactly how we got dark of then moon wheeljack…
It's also how we got Movie Barricade, Prime Breakdown, Prime Knock Out, Animated Prowl, Animated Jetfire, Beast Wars Inferno, Beast Wars Silverbolt, and basically every Unicorn Trilogy character
@@roguewinters that’s precisely my point. We get all these good looking redesigns that are seen by the fandom as good and then eventually when movie character designers and everyone working on the project sees the positive outlook on the designs, they proceed to shit the bed
@@roguewinters You do know that some of those example don't work at all, right? 1 Knock-out and Barricade unthill there appierences didn't have any legacy as characters. Heck, I dare to say they wheren't anything outside of a name to slap on Toys. And they got popular because of the writers that did something interesting with them as characters. (where ealier they didn't do anything regarding characterization) 2 People like Prime Breakdown and Animated Prowl not because they are diffrent from there G1 characters. But because they were written to stand out on there own as characters. Or in short, they like them, because of "done diffrently, but well" mind set, not "diffrent for sake of diffrent". (That, and they didn't look like TF AoE rejeckts).
@@roguewinters It wouldn't bother me if they were nameslaps since I'm once again glad I never grew up with everyone in the comments' precious G1 series, the only good and bad parts that I liked about G1 was the War for Cybertron Trilogy (*both the toyline and the show on Netflix),the Dinobots,Pretenders, and Micromasters, and that's it, nothing else lol.
Well, I would say that the main issue isn’t even the fact that he looks like that, but that in terms of the bumblebee movies design for wheeljack, he looks radically different for no reason.
It's not that they're using a well known name that's the problem, it's the design itself. He looked perfect in the last movie, now he looks like Steve Urkal. Just change the head, and he'll be fine.
It could be like transformers prime where he puts his mouth plate on during battle like it was just a toy design it isn't even confirmed to be 100% accurate
My only gripe is it causes a weird inconsistency between the films him getting an Earth vehicle mode should just completely change how his head looks lol
Why not let Wheeljack be the same Wheeljack we all grown to love. His caricature, origins, personality and cool toy. Why not just be more creative and come up with new caricature traits and new names? It is all in the marketing. They can sell more product just because of the name.
This is clearly Ratchet. Looks nothing like Wheeljack. Imagine I made a new Star Wars movie. I showed you a picture of what looks like a redesign of Darth Vader, and told you it was the new Yoda.
I knew I recognized him. This "Wheeljack" is "Hunt for the Decepticons" Seaspray in bot mode. Look, I grew up on G1 but I actually like changing up designs. The problem is when people lazily name drop onto random characters which this clearly was. Even Bayverse Optimus Prime kept enough of his design cues to be recognizable to casual fans.
Couldn't agree more. That, and they showed that they can do this what you described... Aka Arcee re-desighn. Where she has a new look, yet still look's like Arcee from Bumbelbee movie.
I honestly have a problem with Wheeljack because he was praised in the Bumblebee movie, and now they backtracked on the design that a lot of people liked for a design that reminds me of que from DOTM (Yes, he's supposed to be Wheeljack there)
One thing I appricate about orignal/new designs is that they allow the designers to be more free in their work. Especally for toy first designs. So many of the toys lately have felt off for me since they've essentially worked backwards, trying to get the most "G1" accurate look and forcing the tranformation and design into it.
Winter, I know you made this video to help explain the situetion and make people calm down, but I'm gonna be straight with you, you failed at it. 1 The Unicron Trilogy "what about ism". Or to be more specific, the topic of "expectaction". Armada from it start presented it self as an reboot to the series. So going forward, expeckting anything "G1 alike" in it, would been foolish to say the least. That, and the comparison here is nothing more than a strawman excuse. Also what Bumbelbee movie showed us? It showed G1 desighn in movie style. To put it in short, people after this, expeckted to see more of those desighns going forward. Not because of "G1-oners", but because those were the expectations that the movie set. Also, why they couldn't do something similar like with Arcee? She has a diffrent desighn. Yet she still look's similar to her B movie desighn, and unlike Wheeljack, she still looks good. So again, why!? 2 Regardless if Wheeljack showed in Bee movie or not, this desighn (or at least the head) is still ugly. And that's with out mentiening the Bayverse version (and no, I don't belive in "not 100% exackly like the original = BAD" logic. But people forget that when you do something diffrent, YOU STILL NEED TO MAKE IT GOOD ON IT'S OWN . And Bayverse Wheeljack is anything BUT, good looking desighn). 3 Speaking of Bayverse, people are pissed and afraid because this desighn look's a bit too close to what we got in AoE desighns aka transformers as human caricatures. Add the fackt how Hound, Drift, and Crosshairs were written in TF4, and you get a sure-fire way to make people worry. Worry they may come back to writting movies and characters like Bay did. (not saying this will happen, but from what was showed that's far, I'm sorry, but it doesn't look that promesing)
Jeez, I don't honestly know who's annoying in the TF fandom. Wheeljack's or Arcee's simpy fanbases or your Geewunner personality after posting that comment lol.
@@monster-mecha_enthusiast_2002 Honestly, I'm not sure whitch part is dumber. This comment, or you thinking I'm a geewunner. Because that was never my point. Also, calling me annoying when you're whinning at others comments... Get a grip you Hypocrite.
The design isn't bad, but I feel as if I had been lied to. Its like I was watching a TV show and suddenly after the first episode one of the characters gets a completely different height, actor, and and personality yet keeps the same name and everyone else in the show acts as if nothing changed.
Personally, I can accept the idea of a wheeljack redesign but why did he have to have glasses or safety goggles? ... In fact, why does the have to be designed like a typical science character trope? ... I am going to take a wild guess here and say that he is going to be portrayed in the film as a shy, weak, timid, but smart "geek" who doesn't like violence or the war but needs to step up to help the autobots at the most crucial moment in the film. If this is all true I don't think I would like this wheeljack. I think his G1 design didn't really convey him as a scientist at first glance. We only found out about that based on his character and actions. His G1 character and design was more unique. This version of wheeljack basically says that casual fans may not understand or be confused by him so let's change all that and make him what the trope stands for. No.
Scientists wearing goggles/glasses is a common design feature because scientists often have to wear them for safety reasons. Also, don't you think you're being rather presumptuous? You are making a grand judgment about a character we haven't gotten a good look at yet all based on a "wild guess." I'm not trying to convince anyone to like or dislike the new design, but I suggest waiting for the actual movie before making these sorts of statements.
@@roguewinters Don't bother, it's obvious that Wheeljack's the ONLY character the godforsaken TF community cares about, and I thought Bumblebee's fans are the worst for always praising that character even when he loves to take the spotlight away from other characters.
I think there was actually a recurring joke in the IDW comics that a lot of cybertronians have the same/similar names despite looking entirely different. “So many bots, so few names” or something along those lines.
One thing that should also be noted. In the first three Bayverse movies, Optimus has the same face. When AOE came around he got a more humanoid face and a differently shaped head. A more extreme example of this is Barricade. In the 07 movie he had a completely different face when he made his appearance in TLK.
It would have been at least tolerable if he simply looked like this in bumblebee (although the design is terrible imo). Sure G1 fans would have been pissed but it would have atleast been consistent with the and design flow of the other characters. They went out of their way to use a familiar iconic design for wheel jack only to change him to something completely unrecognizable and just not cool. If they were going to redesign him atleast make him striking perfect example dino mirage from the bayverse looks completely different from his G1 counter part but his design was awesome that effect is not felt with wheel jacks design here. All the other transformers look like what they did in bumblebee with some tweaks why is wheel jack completely different? It makes no sense If he were a different character he would have been fine. Wheel jack having only 2 min of screen time is not a good excuse to ignore this drastic change imo. Let's keep that same energy when DC decides to take off batmans ears and remove his bat symbol for his main suit for an entire comic run and see what happens we'd get the same results and DC would lose even more money then they are right now. Here's a serious question should we have bent the knee and embraced that terrible sonic design with open arms to?
I'm hoping the g1 head is like TFP wheeljacks battle mask, but I realised that what's more important is that the characters personality is like or is close to the original.
I don't hate this wheeljack because he doesn't look like wheeljack, in fact I'm one of the few dotm Soundwave fans... What I'm trying to say with this is that I'm all in for change, good changes to be precise, and I think rotb wheeljack isn't good change, and as I was saying before, I don't hate this wheeljack because he doesn't look like wheeljack, I hate it because it's uglier compared to the bb one His head was just beautiful, why replace it with... That one? And I don't like it because is g1 accurate, it's because it actually looks cool, I like wheeljack as character because he's a cool-looking mad scientist/ "nerd", why do they gotta make it too clear that he's a nerd and in the process taking away all of the "cool" from him? Is not necessary and it's insultingly stereotypical Also I just don't think he fits in, all of his autobot partners resemble their past iterations while also been innovative and wheeljack... He's just too innovative... Make them all "g1 accurate" or all different and unique, don't make some of them be one way and some others the other way, that's just weird to me Wouldn't it be weird for example to see in the rotb sequel the classic decepticon foursome (Megatron, starscream, Soundwave and shockwave) and seeing that three of them look like the perfect mix between their bay, g1, animated and prime interpretations while starscream is just a dorito? That's another reason I like dotm Soundwave, he actually fits with bayverse megs, shockwave and screamer, they're all different and unique, meanwhile in rotb wheeljack will be the only weirdo in the team that will actually not look how they all look (taking inspiration from past iterations) making him stand out... In an awful and strange way
I think it has to do with how Wheeljack (or Que) looked in the original Bayverse Trilogy, I legit did realize that Que was meant to be Wheeljack until a week ago when I was trying to remember Que’s name and I had to google it
I just want to know why he's the only one that looks so different. I also am not a big fan of the face because it feels to bay-esk and seems kinda messy. Idk to each their own though.
I mainly dislike it because of in-universe continuity, but I may just need to just see the design in action. The toys make the movie designs look off sometimes. His body is great, and I think the van suits him (maybe a subtle nod to his G1 cybertronian mode?). But overall, if he still acts like Wheeljack (and has good voice talent), I am confident in this adaptation of Wheeljack for ROTB.
One explanation is that he altered himself to resemble earth nerd culture. Also it is a theory that his glass flip out to form his ears and he gets his mouth plate.
Tbh, I'm a bit 50/50 with the new design. While I do like the goggles and body for Jackie, but I feel like that they over exaggerated the design a bit too much for my liking. And while it true that Transformers franchise has been taking existing names and put them into new designs since G2, but the Bumblebee Movie and Rise of the Beasts are in the same universe. Prime, Bee, and Cee's design change bit, but still look recognizable; Wheeljack design change drastically and that what throw fans off.
Lovely video as per usual! I feel that this issue is pretty complicated, and sadly a lot of it gets lost in the screaming. My personal confusion with the change probably comes from the fact that Prime, Bee, and Arcee are all close to their bumblebee movie selves, just tweaked a bit due to some altmode changes and a bit of stylization. So seeing Wheeljack got off in a completly new direction, and him being the only one of the established cast to do so, is a bit odd. That and on a personal note, I am just not a big fan of the look they went with. I like the body and the new vehicle, but I just think the goggles are a bit try-hard. I just don't like it for the same reason I don't like ROTF Skids. Not because he isn't G1, but cause he is ugly for my tastes. I do like the other designs in the film thus far, even some of the new bots like battletrap! Hope the film turns out well, and super glad you are hyped for it too, goggles and all!
That's another valid point if you are going to drastically change him atleast make him look cool perfect example dino mirage looks nothing like his G1 counter part but he looked striking and bad@$$ this wheel jack design does not have that same effect imo.
You could've just agreed with me that I renamed Wheeljack in Rise of the Beasts by his codename "Barcelona" y'know. It's not hard, and besides is there atleast other Autobot characters that you have as favorites besides Wheeljack or no?
Using iconic Transformers name for different designs is not uncommon, which is why I was not fazed by how Wheeljack looked for Rise of the Beasts. While I understand why fans upset with this change, that does not deter me from seeing this as a creative reinvention of the character itself.
To be honest, I thought about renaming Rise of the Beasts' Wheeljack by his codename "Barcelona" since I did see his codename from his Deluxe figure on the listing of the movie's toyline but it's fine if the new name for ROTB's Wheeljack "Barcelona" doesn't work out for you since none of the other fans agreed with or thanked me when I renamed him to "Barcelona" that often.
It’s not exactly the issue with it being bad, but more so on continuity and logic, for example in prime they changed Jackie’s characteristics he went from inventor to wrecker and at the time it was excepted because of the execution of that change, the same with animated prowl as far as I knew everyone loved the character even tho not only was his design different but so was his character he had a philosophy of his own and because (again) how he was written people loved him, these are examples of good change, q from dotm had characteristics of an inventor and personally was passable, but the design was not recognizable nor was the name I personally only found out he was wheeljack back 2018, recognizability is very important for the fans and I don’t mean that in only design but characteristics as well, and if either is changed or both it has to be done right, now even tho Jackie appears only 2 seconds in bb the fans as dedicated as We are, we seared that design in our minds, the fact that hasbro has released a figure based on that design from bb already set a standard on his design and yes we haven’t seen the film yet but many as of course we all know wonder how exactly this film will explain the sudden and yet very drastic change of this beloved character, wether he is a main character or not, because again he wasn’t the main character in the last adaptation but he stayed true to his design even for a brief moment, then again this is my own opinion on a matter out of our control we can only wait and see what happens, just because controversy over a design is going on, it won’t stop me from seeing the finished product, #TILLALLAREONE
Y'know what? I'm glad I grew up with Armada Rampage and Wrecker Wheeljack more than that lousy G1 scientist you love so much. My honest reason why I hated G1 Wheeljack was becuase he and his annoying flashing ears were a pain in my ass, plus I even liked Steve Blum's voice better as Starscream than that reckless poor excuse for a scientist from that lousy Bumblerbee movie.
In my honest opinion the only that bothers me on the new design is the head, it's just too human-like for me. Otherwise the rest of it looks pretty cool and really like the vw bus alt mode
Lets also not forget that we’re judging the character’s design based on a toy. While the same general design will be the same Wheeljack’s CG model is definitely going to make him look 10x better.
yeah, and if you take a closer look at his chest and compare it to the rotb trailer moment with arcee you can hope that he might end up looking different even if just for a moment (or they just couldn`t get the license from volkswagen to make his alt-mode look like his van)
So I'm not gonna let it ruin the movie for me, I'm pretty hyped for R.o.t.B's. and, I started with the Unicron trilogy, I don't mind Swindle being a race car minicon or, the best Deception, its that we got solid designs for characters that don't get as much attention as they should, (Arcee, Brawn and, yes, Jackie) and I LOVE Arcees new design, just feels like they changed Wheeljacks design cause the director was bored but, I do like the idea of Jackie being a big clunky van, feels more apt for a sciency bot (if that's what they end up doing), not gonna let it ruin the movie for me, keeping an open mind, it just, kind of annoys me after how good his design was in the Bumblebee movie
Ok here’s a valid critic 1: changing wheeljack like this breaks continuity which has already been a problem for the live action movie 2: the name preceptor would suit the design so much more because glasses, perception and the name isn’t used so it doesn’t break continuity and 3 his lips there is no way that no one else has a problem with the lips they just look too organic for a machine. TLDR I think they should have named him preceptor because then the name draws attention to the glasses in a more positive light while still allowing the character to be sciencey.
My TLDR: I think Wheeljack's annoying fans should've renamed him by his codename "Barcelona" like how I did when I saw his design, but sadly they'd be too lazy to do that.
Ima be honest, wheeljacks change was one of my main gripes with the movie, besides the fact that we didn’t get to see more of the big cast (ironhide and ratchet for one). The square glasses are pretty campy to me and just make me think they just turned his design into essentially nerdy big transformer. Wheel jacks design was one of the ones who stood out to me among the group and now that changed.
Yea I didn't mind wheel jack in dark of the moon, and I read the reason why they redesigned him in this one, and I didn't mind the character but wish they had kept that continuity from bee with his design to make it less confusing as to how this happened. Wish they had just introduced a new character because me and my dad loved him in the movie, but it did feel like a waste of time to make him nerdier for nerdiers sake.
yeah honestly reusing names from other bots on a new design has been a thing in the transformers for awhile i feel like we shouldn't hate this design they put creativity to make a new design for wheeljack i like this desgin as wheeljack is an inventory and needs goggles to invent something and it makes sense as well that he is a camper van cause he can store his inventions there and most likely since its robots in disguise so he had to go for a normal looking vehicle mode that you would probably see
Pablo and Que are both welcome in my TF space. In terms of a redesign both Que and Pablo have core aspects of Wheeljack in their design (Being an inventor/science nerd), which is more than can be said for alot of movie and unicron trilogy characters. Also ROTB Wheeljack turning into a van is honestly the best G1 ref I could ask for. The only weird thing is the continuity with Bumblebee but if I can accept FOC preceeding TF Prime, than I can definitely accept a silly little brown dork, especially since I'm a silly little brown dork myself. Just remember no reinterpretation can be as bad as Skids and Mudflap.
I love his design! Except, his face terrifies me and reminds me of “Que” who is better of forgotten. It’s not about how recognisable he is. It’s about giving justice to character designs (Ugly sonic is a great example of how to deal with a design).
Listen, if you can just keep your Sonic and Wheeljack to a comparison a minimum and to yourself while I'm trying to enjoy Rise of the Beasts? that would be great lmao.
I like most of the design but the head is just terrible. Blitzwing looks great. Prime designs look great. Movie designs are good. But this head is just ugly to me. The ugly fish lips the and the glasses are to big for me. Also Arcee gets a similar face from bumblebee so why shouldn’t wheeljack. Yes the general audience won’t mind any of this but you can’t use that as a point to say we shouldn’t be angry with it. People can dislike experimentation for more than it doesn’t look like the other thing. If we should be happy with whatever paramount gives us we would have ugly Sonic. Change is a good thing but people can dislike those changes. I think the design is fine except most of the head but films should internal consistency with character designs and we shouldn’t be happy with every change.
“I can’t believe they didn’t name the Porsche Jazz!” And I still can’t! But at least the robot mode confirms that this is Mirage. Plus, it is more practical than say… a formula-1 race car! Good luck blending in with that!
I normally stay well away from commenting but; Rogue Winters is basically saying - You can take Optimus Prime, give him an afro and smiley-face and change his alt-mode into a garbage truck, and whatever backlash that comes of this, Rogue Winters can mock; just like now. News flash - You can't change the design of the character radically in the SAME universe and expect everyone to nod their head to it especially if it departs so far from the acknowledged representation. GOLDEN RULE all good designers know; Never change something that is a classic - Your product will always be shoved aside in memory/nostalgia of the stronger more meaningful coherrant design that set the right precedent. Wheeljack in Bumblebee movie is now checkhov's gun.
After watching the movie I have a theory. I think most people forget that ROTB takes place seven years after Bumblebee. In order to stay hidden they need to blend in. While Bumblebee landed in California, Wheeljack most likely landed somewhere in in a Hispanic area. The first time we saw wheeljack was when everyone went to Peru. And from the area we meet him, it is a lot less developed area explaining his old rusty van style. As for the voice , I think it was due to him staying there for 7 years.. Humans can change accents depending on where we’re for a portion of their life. It might be the same for Cybertonians.
On one way, sure that's make's sence of view things (in case you're wondering, I didn't watched the movie yet). But that's not problem. The problem is regarding his head desighn. Or in short 1 Looks nothing like Wheeljack (movie desighns or not) 2 It just looks ugly, especially in comparison to the B movie desighn.
@@dedalionarts6077 yeah even thought what I said might have been the case I still wished that his Bumblebee design returned. Almost all the other auto bots had their Bumblebee G1 designs mixed with bay verse and I loved it.
I’m open to new takes on Transformer designs and characters, but the new head for Wheeljack ain’t the best. Hopefully it’s not that bad in the actual movie considering this is just the ROTB toy, and not the Studio Series figure or the CGI model.
@@roguewinters yeah I left it last month, it was finally too much for me. I am trying that weird beast Mastodon now, there is a bit of transformers activity over there but it is still pretty quiet. But anyway I am following your YT channel so I should not miss your vids. :)
I usually don't mind new designs for existing characters. I personally liked this design. But the problem is the movie a direct sequel to the Bumblebee Movie and we saw Wheeljack there. Where's the continuity?
I agree, ima just wait until the film cause I don’t wanna judge before I even see the film and this happens every time with transformers movies with the fans. So the head is okay I wish they kept the bumblebee head but is it bad, no and is it gonna stop me from watching the movie, no.
The problem with the ROTB Wheeljack design is that it’s supposed to be the same character as the one in Bumblebee who is supposed to look like the G1 version of the character. Changing his design so drastically to make him look like a stereotypical Steve Urkel nerd makes no sense whatsoever, I think what fans are demanding is consistency. It’s like Marvel giving a character a comic accurate costume and ditch in the sequel for something completely unrecognizable because you wanna take artistic liberties with a character and be imaginative.
(Ignoring the g1 toy a bit) me personally I don't like the redesign because wheeljack looks more like a dork then he did. Like I get he's a scientist, but did they really have to make him look like a fricking emoji? I like the glasses I like the body. If the other transformers can have great redesigns, then so can wheeljack.
...I think it's pretty obvious that there's 0% chance of Transformers fans not thinking about that character since he's the only Autobot you can think about and no one else, there's literally every other Autobot you probably have on your favorite list atleast but not Wheeljack, why couldn't you do that?
So can we have a bee design and call that ironhide, I feel like the name of a character should matter a bit more because if it doesn’t then we can throw any name on anyone and just be okay with it.
It is a bit distracting since all the other characters pay homage to their previous designs for bb yet wheeljack is the only one to have a complete redesign. But since we haven't watched the movie yet i have my own little HEADcanon for the change. His original headsculpt was a helmet. It got crushed by a con. He is working on a new one. There. Sanity restored for now.
This design is interesting. I like that he turns into a van, could be a nod to his space van mode in the first episode of G1. It also gives that unkempt, eccentric scientist vibe that Wheeljack is known for. I think my only problem is the head. It doesn’t match with the bumblebee movie design at all, which makes a sort of disconnect that shouldn’t be there given that this is a new movie verse. One of your arguments is that Wheeljack wasn’t a prominent character in the BB movie and this it shouldn’t matter, and okay, I guess. But the same could be said for Arcee, and her design while different still keeps design cues from her bb counterpart, they’re connected. I agree that for a franchise all about transformation, it’s fans can be really stagnant and stubborn on topics. But sometimes it’s more nuanced than that, sometimes people aren’t afraid of change in general, they’re afraid of change done wrong. TFA and TFP are beloved, and they take plenty of liberties, TFA especially. We’ll just have to wait and see where this goes, maybe it won’t be as bad as people expect. (Also, I think it vaguely resembles the Rescue Bots design cues, but done much, much worse. Just my opinion tho, maybe I just really love Rescue Bots.) I hope you have a good day!
I’m sorry but they had a g1 design in bumblebee and even the studio series bbm wheeljack was called wheeljack so there should have been no problem with keeping the design. They should have just made this wheeljack a brand new character with a different name and keep wheel jack for when they can actually put him in a movie
I guess we are just not used to see a character getting his design changed this drasticaly in a continuety. Plus for some bayverse fans and in general most Transformers Fans, it looks like a young version of DOTM Einstein Wheeljack and most people didn't liked that look. But who knows, maybe it's only temporary for this movie and he looks more G1ish in the other two upcoming movies of the Trilogy. Never the less we should get used to it for now, so we don't ruin movie for ourselves. And to be honest I kinda...sorta...like this design...just have to get used to it.
Design could have worked if he had turned out to be memorable... he sounds latino, but he explicitely states not being, he is zen but easily offended, becoming passive agressive, and wears glasses for the mere excuse of avoiding being punched in the face... hope we never see him again
Lock the bumblebee movie set the standards of health the transformers movie characters should be designed in a live action movie I know about blitzwing but that is not a can of worms I don't want to open
With how much of the franchise has been based on the aesthetic of the g1 cartoon I actually think it's nice to see a departure from that again with a character that matters. In the last decade we've had lots of Wheeljacks and other characters based on the g1 stuff, so why not play around with him.
I mean, I grew up with Beast Wars more than G1 but yeah good point, however not trying to sound like a G1 elitist but I did call Rise of the Beasts' Wheeljack by his codename "Barcelona" like how he was renamed "Que" in Dark of the Moon because while I was chill with the design? I thought that codename would suit the design better imo.
it's not the fact that wheeljack was changed. it's how i honestly feel you are mising the point on why TF fans are angry and it's that it kinda makes him look ironically dumb, wheeljack looked fine back in bumblebee and most characters in this were pretty close to their original bumblebee designs with only minor differences, but wheeljack is probably the most visually striking in terms of design, and honestly the change is kind of disrespectful as it makes him look like a nerd rather than wheeljack. but tbh I probably forget about it when I see it in the actual movie
Why do superman looks like batman? Why don't they change the design of aquaman's suit to red tornadao? Why not change Optimus design to look like that dorky Wheeljack? Make it make sense!
This is valid. Though if you watched tf3 (directed by Micheal bay) everyone hated on que for looking how he did. And que is wheeljack but with a different name and his design in tf3 was to represent Einstein which since he was a smart inventor fits him it wasn’t that bad. But the glasses make him look like he hit puberty but it failed. So I like his new design but it is one of the saddest changes to a transformer.(also the only person who had 2 seconds of screen time was cliffjumper)
Man, y'know what? I'm glad I didn't act like those angry Bumblebee movie-loving fans when I saw Rise of the Beasts' Wheeljack, cause' I never grew up with G1 and I'm once again glad I never did since the only parts like about the Bumblebee movie was the Decepticons and I also decided to my own right thing about the ROTB design of Wheeljack by renaming him by his Deluxe figure's codename "Barcelona" since I thought that name would suit the design better imo but the problem is that when I told those fans I renamed Wheeljack by his codename "Barcelona" in Rise of the Beasts? they didn't listen since they wasted their time throwing a crappy criticism party about it. It also summed up why I'm only seeing this movie for the Maximals and Terrorcons more than the Autobots after changing faction preferences like preferring the Maximals and Dinobots over the Autobots now.
The head is the reason I hate the Design even while watching this video, if you've already designed an established look for the character specifically on their face, you still stick with the design, heck look at Prime's Head despite the slight redesigns used they still have the G1 feel to them but still give off a new Vibe Wheeljack's unique head design helped him stand out, even for his alt mode it was actually better he transformed into a Combi instead of a Lancia Stratos cause even in early G1 his cybertronian form turned into a Van-Like Vehicle
Some could say their was a similar situation back in the Transformers Prime animated series. In that show, Wheeljack looked like his G1 counterpart but his personality was different. G1 Wheeljack was an enthusiast engineer while Prime Wheeljack was an angsty warrior.
“Some people are dissappointed” is a huge understatement on how many people despise this design.
the problem is not designed itself but for people like me that’s why the fact that bumblebee, Optimus prime, and arcee still look at least for their heads like the ones from bumblebee which this film is ment be a sequel to this isn’t like complaining they redesigned the character for a whole new universe it’s more questioning why the designs for wheeljack head don’t match up between two films in the same universe
@@roguewintersand tbf a lot hated the beast machines redesigns and the energon redesigns were at best indifferent
Wheeljack being an inventor and turned into a combi makes sense, he can store the stuff he creates in there
Sure, why not.
That is, if they gonna use him in a movie. And by that I mean use him as an character, and not a caricature like TF4 cast.
(where ealier they didn't do anything regarding characterization)
2 People like Prime Breakdown and Animated Prowl not because they are diffrent from there G1 characters.
My only gripe is it causes a weird inconsistency between the films
him getting an Earth vehicle mode should just completely change how his head looks lol
By your logic, Optimus Prime should be a green frog monster, and everyone should be happy with it...get out of here man.
Why not let Wheeljack be the same Wheeljack we all grown to love. His caricature, origins, personality and cool toy. Why not just be more creative and come up with new caricature traits and new names? It is all in the marketing. They can sell more product just because of the name.
Ok I give up, I'm just gonna call him wheelchuck
I mean I don't hate the design, but the face really gets mr angry but it's fine
I honestly have a problem with Wheeljack because he was praised in the Bumblebee movie, and now they backtracked on the design that a lot of people liked for a design that reminds me of que from DOTM (Yes, he's supposed to be Wheeljack there)
True, Wheeljack wasn't even a good G1 character to begin with lol.
@@monster-mecha_enthusiast_2002 and I thought your comment in responce to me was brain dead.
One thing I appricate about orignal/new designs is that they allow the designers to be more free in their work. Especally for toy first designs. So many of the toys lately have felt off for me since they've essentially worked backwards, trying to get the most "G1" accurate look and forcing the tranformation and design into it.
It's just that they did it so well in bumblebee and he's genuinely ugly
Dude, just admit you love Wheeljack so much and no one else.

@@dedalionarts6077 Alright fine.
Wow! A trans Transformers fan! You dont see those every day! This means an automatic sub!
This re-design is one of the worst in history 💀☠️
The design isn't bad, but I feel as if I had been lied to. Its like I was watching a TV show and suddenly after the first episode one of the characters gets a completely different height, actor, and and personality yet keeps the same name and everyone else in the show acts as if nothing changed.
Remember wheeljack from dotm, aka “Q”
Dude, they gave us hardcore fans G1 accurate bots! Accurate G1. Why such a drastic change to the head? Why? "Artistic Liberty" he says.
Yeah right, you so-called "hardcore" fans are a joke.
And people keep forgetting, that besides different universe possibilities, cybertronians can rescan to change their alt modes.
Nerd emoji wheeljack grows up to be Einstein based cryptid Que!
I don't hate this wheeljack because he doesn't look like wheeljack, in fact I'm one of the few dotm Soundwave fans... What I'm trying to say with this is that I'm all in for change, good changes to be precise, and I think rotb wheeljack isn't good change, and as I was saying before, I don't hate this wheeljack because he doesn't look like wheeljack, I hate it because it's uglier compared to the bb one
His head was just beautiful, why replace it with... That one? And I don't like it because is g1 accurate, it's because it actually looks cool, I like wheeljack as character because he's a cool-looking mad scientist/ "nerd", why do they gotta make it too clear that he's a nerd and in the process taking away all of the "cool" from him? Is not necessary and it's insultingly stereotypical
Also I just don't think he fits in, all of his autobot partners resemble their past iterations while also been innovative and wheeljack... He's just too innovative... Make them all "g1 accurate" or all different and unique, don't make some of them be one way and some others the other way, that's just weird to me
Wouldn't it be weird for example to see in the rotb sequel the classic decepticon foursome (Megatron, starscream, Soundwave and shockwave) and seeing that three of them look like the perfect mix between their bay, g1, animated and prime interpretations while starscream is just a dorito? That's another reason I like dotm Soundwave, he actually fits with bayverse megs, shockwave and screamer, they're all different and unique, meanwhile in rotb wheeljack will be the only weirdo in the team that will actually not look how they all look (taking inspiration from past iterations) making him stand out... In an awful and strange way
It's actually starting to grow on me. I still love the glowing fins look, but this is neat
Wheel if paramount can change sonic design less than 6 months, why can't for wheeljack
Nerdjack
Bruh, just call ROTB Wheeljack by his codename "Barcelona" already, it's not hard.
Take my advice, focus on other Autobot or Maximal characters instead of Wheeljack because he sucks lol.
I hate the glasses, that’s it. Get rid of the glasses and maybe put on some ears and I’ll be happy.
Wheeljack was such a badass they ruined him he was a wrecker who loves explosives
Lets also not forget that we’re judging the character’s design based on a toy. While the same general design will be the same Wheeljack’s CG model is definitely going to make him look 10x better.
As long they don’t make Optimus Primal the wrong animal
yeah, and if you take a closer look at his chest and compare it to the rotb trailer moment with arcee you can hope that he might end up looking different even if just for a moment (or they just couldn`t get the license from volkswagen to make his alt-mode look like his van)
My TLDR:
I think Wheeljack's annoying fans should've renamed him by his codename "Barcelona" like how I did when I saw his design, but sadly they'd be too lazy to do that.
4:56 Yes, yes it is
Ima be honest, wheeljacks change was one of my main gripes with the movie, besides the fact that we didn’t get to see more of the big cast (ironhide and ratchet for one). The square glasses are pretty campy to me and just make me think they just turned his design into essentially nerdy big transformer. Wheel jacks design was one of the ones who stood out to me among the group and now that changed.
This is ironhide with glasses
Yea I didn't mind wheel jack in dark of the moon, and I read the reason why they redesigned him in this one, and I didn't mind the character but wish they had kept that continuity from bee with his design to make it less confusing as to how this happened. Wish they had just introduced a new character because me and my dad loved him in the movie, but it did feel like a waste of time to make him nerdier for nerdiers sake.
yeah honestly reusing names from other bots on a new design has been a thing in the transformers for awhile i feel like we shouldn't hate this design they put creativity to make a new design for wheeljack i like this desgin as wheeljack is an inventory and needs goggles to invent something and it makes sense as well that he is a camper van cause he can store his inventions there and most likely since its robots in disguise so he had to go for a normal looking vehicle mode that you would probably see
I like to pretend the studio series bublebee wheeljack is a wave filler and downshift was the one in the movie
Whatever man, nobody really cares if you have a crush on Wheeljack.

Wheeljack in Bumblebee movie is now checkhov's gun.
the design isnt necessarily bad but i think the problem is that its wheeljack, its just like DoTM again
I kindaa wish they didn't change his design but then again his form in dark of the moon was more ridiculous so?
Or in short
1 Looks nothing like Wheeljack (movie desighns or not)
2 It just looks ugly, especially in comparison to the B movie desighn.
@@dedalionarts6077 yeah even thought what I said might have been the case I still wished that his Bumblebee design returned. Almost all the other auto bots had their Bumblebee G1 designs mixed with bay verse and I loved it.
@@ZachNohKap same
I’m open to new takes on Transformer designs and characters, but the new head for Wheeljack ain’t the best. Hopefully it’s not that bad in the actual movie considering this is just the ROTB toy, and not the Studio Series figure or the CGI model.
Rogue, is there other places to follow you instead of twitter? (good vid too)
Thanks! Honestly, Twitter is the only social media website I actively use (even though it is absolutely crumbling to ruins before our eyes)
So the head is okay I wish they kept the bumblebee head but is it bad, no and is it gonna stop me from watching the movie, no.
same here homie
At least it’s not bay verse wheel-jack.
Just change his name and problem solved.Actually just make him a totally different character.
it’s a new design and I accept that! I’m all for new designs. My problem with it is that this design sucks! 😅
How’s about changing Optimus Prime into a green dump truck since it makes no difference 🤷🏽♂️ let’s see how much the fans would appreciate that
I guess we are just not used to see a character getting his design changed this drasticaly in a continuety.
We all know wheeljack design is trash I’m surprised you like it
Lock the bumblebee movie set the standards of health the transformers movie characters should be designed in a live action movie I know about blitzwing but that is not a can of worms I don't want to open
We did it with sonic, well do it with wheeljack!
Jk idc as long as the movie is good
With how much of the franchise has been based on the aesthetic of the g1 cartoon I actually think it's nice to see a departure from that again with a character that matters.
And also weljack hasglases
... I like the ROTB design
:>
I don't blame you, besides I'm so glad to remain casual.
based
I think it's Awesome it's wheeljack new form what's the problem with that. Stop complaining people live with it.
it's not the fact that wheeljack was changed. it's how
i honestly feel you are mising the point on why TF fans are angry and it's that it kinda makes him look ironically dumb, wheeljack looked fine back in bumblebee and most characters in this were pretty close to their original bumblebee designs with only minor differences, but wheeljack is probably the most visually striking in terms of design, and honestly the change is kind of disrespectful as it makes him look like a nerd rather than wheeljack. but tbh I probably forget about it when I see it in the actual movie
the original Wheeljack in general was just dumb to begin with anyway, grow up and move on.
Finally someone agrees with me
Why do superman looks like batman?
Thank you!!!someone that isn’t a asshole about this design
Agreed, like I don't really get why's everyone else so passionate about Wheeljack??
Do they have a crush on him or what..??
You're coping so hard lol
You only like it because you want to be different, don't you.
@@kade-qt1zu Yeah, because like I said I never grew up with G1 to begin with, deal with it lmao.
Do I honestly need to repeat myself again?
Are you trans gender no ofense i respect you ok and also thank you for explaining wy weljack is difrent
The head is the reason I hate the Design even while watching this video, if you've already designed an established look for the character specifically on their face, you still stick with the design, heck look at Prime's Head despite the slight redesigns used they still have the G1 feel to them but still give off a new Vibe
Wheeljack's unique head design helped him stand out, even for his alt mode it was actually better he transformed into a Combi instead of a Lancia Stratos cause even in early G1 his cybertronian form turned into a Van-Like Vehicle
