How to remove NASTY ROAD TAR from car paint!

  • Am I a hack? I couldn't figure out how to remove road tar, so I kept going after different formulas. Super Clean; Meguiar's Wheel Brightener; even Iron X . . . nothing was making a dent. But then, the skies parted, and down from above came a miracle! Lol -- what do you guys think? What do YOU use for road tar?!

    Citrial 266! I have it in the aerosol can and I just spray it on and come back in about two minutes and the tar is literally melting away and running down the car panel was one of the craziest things the first time I did was in shock. You gotta try it. I haven’t cleaned this much tar off a vehicle before but I’m telling you right now that’s your best choice. I think it’s like 18$ on amazon. I use it for tar or even adhesive on the paint little to no effort! I’m actually getting low I’m about to buy it by the gallon it’s that good.

    Odorless mineral spirits doesn't soften clear coat. It's the same active ingredient in many wax and grease removers, and some waxes and sealants.
    Also lacquer thinner is clear coat safe as well. Clear coat is highly, highly, chemical resistant. You can test this with a test hood.

    Here in Brazil we have some called "óleo de linhaça".
    I tried google translate and it gives me
    "linseed oil" as result, but I'm not sure.

    Did you use the odorless mineral spirits on the wheel well and the black plastics? I have a similar situation and got it off the paint with clay bar ( I also have PPF), now it’s still in wheel well and on/under running board.

    • @HawkProDetailing
      @HawkProDetailing  2 роки тому

      You might try a product called "Eulex" from koch chemie. Worth buying on a site like autoality.com or detailed image and waiting a week for it to ship to you. It's smelly but amazing. Tar is a beast and I've never found a better product. Mineral spirits work but...it's a lot of work lol

      @@HawkProDetailing Thanks for the quick response. I guess I should also ask what tool should I use? The PPF was difficult, but cleaned with clay bar..now it’s the scrubbing of the wheel well and the under side/hard plastic of the running boards..it’s a 21 GLE 350.

    Would a magic eraser work or would it be too harsh?

    • @HawkProDetailing
      @HawkProDetailing  5 років тому

      a magic eraser COULD work, but it's basically a very mild sandpaper. there's a decent chance you could leave something behind visually that would need polishing out. so I guess I wouldn't start there but use it at your own risk if you decide...

    Your not a hack broski, the dedicated tar removers are no match for tar like that....not even close. You'd be there for days, and still probably wont get it all off. What you used was the correct product. Stuff like mineral spirits, laquer thinner, acetone is what you use to get that off. You just have to be mindful and rinse it off completely as soon as you can.
    The black plastic trim is a whole other problem. In that situation, all you can really use are those tar products, and maybe a plastic razor blade. Either way, you damage the trim no matter what chemical or method you use.

    • @HawkProDetailing
      @HawkProDetailing  5 років тому +1

      Thanks so much for the feedback!! I knew that was a special kind of nasty tar job lol...the customer wanted the stuff out of the wheel arches and off of the trim but she ultimately understood I had to charge extra.

      totally! I talked to scott from Dallas paint correction about this too. he said as long as you're doing no harm and doing what you need to do to take care of your family, you should be okay:) Apparently some guys use lacquer thinner for this kind of job and that's even more aggressive...

    What works the best is persistence. Even concentrated Dawn soap would work but you would be there for a while..I know this because I've done it to my own car which had more road tar than that. Took me a few days of persistence but I did it with really hot water
