  • On the day Patrick Valenzuela retires we remember one of the most dominant wins in Santa Anita Derby history as Horse of the Year winner Sunday Silence won the Santa Anita Derby. Patrick Valenzuela and Sunday Silence went on to win the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness that year.

This horse was always considered 2nd class by the snobs in Kentucky. Also most felt Easy Goer was the better horse. Sunday Silence beat him 3 out of 4 times and became the most valuable race horse in history as a sire.

The one win Easy Goer got in the Belmont by 8 lengths was larger than the 3 wins Sunday Silence got combined LOL. I think Easy Goer had the most impressive performances between the two but still lost the head to head 3-1. First race Sunday Silence liked the mud but Easy Goer didn't, 2nd race Sunday Silence just plain old beat him in a super close race. 3rd race Easy Goer 4estroyed him. Their 4th and final meeting Easy Goer was ridden badly and way to far back and had no chance of catching Sunday Silence.

It's ironic that the very day that Sunday Silence put forth this spectacular performance in the Santa Anita Derby that his old nemesis, Easy Goer, broke Secretariat's stakes record in the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct by a full second and came within a fifth of a second of breaking Dr Fager's world record for the mile. Both incredible horses, IMO.

SS ran the turns as well as any horse I've ever seen.

This may have been the dumbest, most abusive, cocaine filled ride ever! Why? P-Val has a lead in the stretch by a city block and is profusely whipping and beating SS the whole length of the stretch with a huge, huge lead. After the race, Whittingham was furious, he told him he was crazy for doing this, and let him train the horse. Whittingham said, after this race, is why SS started to detest the whip, and would duck and prop, like he did in the Swaps-G2 loss and Derby.

Wow, they didn't wait for the race to be declared "official", before draping the flowers over Sunday Silence. And well, they shouldn't have. What a horse, what a rider.

PVal has his personal demons no doubt. But he is one helluva rider.
