2024 is sure to be full of intense competition and innovation in the battery sector. What are your predictions for smaller companies? Can they carve out a niche against giants like CATL and BYD?

You do need to do a much more thorough look at the technology of EV batteries. Not just about the chemistry but the key cooling, cell management systems, dimensions of cells, types of cells, and factors relating to energy density. Names of key bits of terminology and relevance of each part would be useful.

That's quite a complex topic, as different EVs use different techniques and detailed information is available only sporadically, if at all. It could be cool to do a more general overview of EV battery technology though. Thanks for the idea!

Yes, I would definitely like to learn more about the new technology with the sodium ion batteries. Hope you can do a video as you suggested.

Yes Yes Yes to having a comparison of battery tech. And can you in please investigate whether manufacturers will ever let third parties build /supply battery packs.. EV depreciation costs will continue to be phenomenal. EV's should last for decades if they are not in a prang. Having to scrap a good vehicle because replacement battery packs are too expensive defeats the purpose of these products that reduce greenhouse gases. If Musk announced that he would provide replacement battery packs and updated software at cost he would take over the world supply.

Hi, thanks for the comment! The battery repair market is just starting to take off, after all every EV has a battery warranty of at least 7-8 years. Until then, no one is addressing this for individual models.
But for the BMW i3 and Nissan Leaf, there are already many repair shops that replace the batteries, or just individual cells and modules. It's going to be a huge market in the future. Personally, I'm very much looking forward to doing power upgrades on my favorite EV.
Realistiacally batteries aren't rocket science, more like a big puzzle. If it's well made (as in if there's an obligation to manufacture it so that it's serviceable), I don't see a reason why all EVs couldn't have battery upgrades and the EU is certainly pushing for it now, similar to mobile phones. 🙂 Bjorn Nyland has nice YT videos from a company where they take a detailed look at battery upgrades in the Nissan Leaf.

@@siasek Thks for reply. I will check out Bjorn's vid. I wish the legislators in Oz were up with the play. The other area you may wish to explore and I realise all countries are different is the cost of insurance and who takes liability for repairs. Plenty of stories on the wire which suggest that damage to battery packs even superficial are not being touched by panel beaters and sparkys. This should all have been sorted out long ago.
