I’m a cork native, it breaks my heart how bad things are, I love my city, I love my country and I want to live there. My own government lack of action on housing is sickening and deeply upsetting, I hope this will one day change.

great video sir and you are exactly right in everything you said .. and the most crazy thing of all is that the situation has actually become far worse a year later than when you originally made this video .. Ireland has not had the foresight and the planning to invest in housing .. there simply aren't enough houses and flats .. in dublin for the last 20 years there are more offices under contraction than apartments .. its a terrible situation

I’m also Irish and I cannot believe how ridiculous the rental housing cost is. They better come with a personal chef and floors made from gold for the prices they’re asking. That bubble will burst and God help the people of Ireland when it does.

I live abroad. This is utterly ridiculous!
You should do a video on scammers.
Glad you got such a lovely place.
The greed of landlords is scandalous!!
N parents end up footing bill for students.
All has to change, and that change is coming!
    Best wishes

Hi. I have to reply this video because I have too much to say. As a person who is planning to move to Cork, Ireland with his family, I have to say your video makes me anxious so much on the renting in this city! I could not imaging that I have to pay 1'300 Euro /mth to rent for a flat which worth only 130'000 Euro to buy. While, "only" does not mean that I'm rich to that, but means that the cost ratio between renting and buying a flat are so high. You know, I'm living in Zurich now. As one of the most expensive cities in Europe, people spend CHF 2000/mth for a 2-2.5 room apartment in the city (avoid the most expensive blocks, I mean), however, these apartments, if you buy, each could worth 1 million at least!

Had the same problem (in 2015!!!). Finding apartment/ house/ room in Cork or Ballincollig area was so hard I almost left Ireland first month I arrived. I had money, well payed job, but every time there was something on daft there were 50 people or more on viewing. Not mentioning shitness of those places. Why to bother if you have 90 people ready to rent from you straight away (offering you 100 or more per month just to let them rent)...
Great People, Great Country. But I won't be back because of crazy rent/ houses prices

Congrats on finding a nice place, like you mentioned, the housing crisis in Ireland is ***ed. I've rented places in continental Europe, which is also experiencing a housing crises, but Ireland really is next level.
And your situation just goes to show that if you don't have a car available that you are double **** since public transport is so poor in this country.

There are just too many people in the Country now as more houses are built infrastructure is under big pressure now. There may well be brown out and power cuts this winter due to strain on the power grid.
Rental costs have just gone mad as people fight over the few places to rent the same for people trying to buy.

Unfortunately, it could be another 5 years before we see any sort of relief on housing supply, for many different reasons. One of the biggest reasons is the lack of skilled tradespersons. When the Economic crash happened in 2008-2013, a lot of small trades companies got badly burned, so they downsized to just themselves, happy to make a week's wage, or they emigrated. When the economy started to pick up again, they stayed as they were, so while a lot of these small companies used to take on apprentices, they stopped doing so. That meant that we missed out on an entire layer of people who should now be the backbone of the building industry. There has been a big drive to entice apprentices back into the industry but it's simply going to take time. The government are finally starting to push modular house building, to house the Ukrainian refugees, and this will help but it has been slow to pick up previously. So the answer is unfortunately time. BTW, it's interesting you speak of housing for lower income people, and that problem goes back to the 1980s when the government copied the Thatcher policy of selling off the social housing stock, and got out of building new social housing. Again, the current government have finally realised that we need to build up the social and affordable housing stock, but as with everything else, it takes time to ramp up.

The housing crisis in Ireland is a shit hole. The more you deep dive into it, the worse it looks. And to top it off, this is going on since a couple of years now and the wealthy politicians here couldn't care less. This is a 3rd world problem in a first world country. Cannot recollect Australia, Canada, USA etc. having these problems.

May I follow up on this. How is your stay in there Manuel? How much rent do you pay now..
Base on this info it is better to pay for a rent of a room for a week which cost you around 400 to 600 € a month than to rent for a whole unit for 1.3k to 1.4k €?....
Thank you in advance. I was asking this because in the coming months I may be moving to cork for a job....

We are already in the big crash, Inflation is a catastrophe. This CPI report is a colossal failure. To bring the housing market to a halt, the FED will have to pull all the stops. The unfortunate issue is that other markets are being decimated. If you want to stay green, you have to rely on a lot of diversification. Currently up 14% and being careful. Still a better deal than leaving it in a savings or checking account yielding 0-1 percent interest.....

Why thr Irish people don't construct houses? For for self and rent purpose. It seems that most of irish people go to other advanced countries and make and construct their house over there.
    Why to blame their government?
In my country majority of people rent out their 1 or 2 portions of houses, So their is offcourse some shortage of houses as the population is increasing but not such severe shortage/crisis as in ireland.

It’s so ridiculous people blaming ‘wealthy politicians’ for the housing shortage in Ireland.
Firstly, while well paid, our politicians are ordinary people.
Secondly, Ireland has a strong history supporting the right to private property.
This comes from our heritage and history of being an occupied country.
So, it’s not easy for any Irish politician or Government to just ‘take’ property or land from private citizens and develop it into housing.
Thirdly, we were so badly affected as a country by the international financial collapse of 2008 that we had the IMF bail us out.
That was a very difficult period.
Many of young apprentice building professionals left Ireland during that time and never came back.
Result: we do not have enough people with building skills.
Finally, we have suffered building materials inflation in line with global inflationary trends.
What’s happened is that Ireland has been well managed from a business-development perspective and the economy is doing really well.
But you cannot go from borrowing money and emigration to billions in surplus and immigration in a vague decade and not have growing pains.
    It’s a complex issue.
