  • Am I unreasonably skeptical about the non-miraculous claim that Jesus was buried in a tomb? Michael Jones of Inspiring Philosophy, Mike Winger, and Timothy Barnett of Red Pen Logic with Mr B all think that I am. Let's see what they have to say.

    45:36 - This is why I don't respect IP: his original argument was that the Greek word used for "bury" indicates a proper, tomb-style burial, but now, when he's been shown that this word can also mean a trench grave, he pivots to saying that this wasn't a specific commentary on Roman practices, and he tries to differentiate a "proper" trench grave from an "unceremonious" trench grave, as if the word itself actually speaks to the former, and excludes the latter.

No amount of good works or righteousness (which as an atheist you have no bases for) will save you. It is by the grace of God, through faith, that we are saved. I have a Jehovah's witness background. We had an easy solution for this. Jesus wasn't raised in his body. It dissolved into nothing and Jesus was resurrected as a Spirit, with the same likeness as God himself. That's kind of what the earliest Christians believed to some extent. Paul sure didn't seem to care much about the resurrection of the body. His 1 Corinthians 15 can certainly be read to assume he thought the physical body was useless. And of course he never claimed to see the physical Jesus. He mentions Jesus 'appearing' to people. Even the gospels hint at it.. he gets through locked doors, and isn't recognized by his friends. But, there's no question some parts of the gospels insist he got his body back, and Acts says he literally ascended to heaven in some sort of body. Of course all of this is just interesting nonsense.

We could have had language by then so the oral stories of the disaster could be passed down over the millennia as our species dispersed from Africa.
      Or there were a number of flood stories in the Middle East about the Tigris and Euphrates. If you bothered actually reading Genesis instead of just pissing on it, you might learn it took a lot of stories common in the region and gave them a moral aspect to teach about their god. Read the flood story in context and it ends a period with no law and civil disorder and concludes with humanity being given its first law, the Noahide Law. So hebrews took a common story and turning it into a parable about the importance of humanity having laws to make them civilized. The importance and nature of law is a theme that will repeated again and again in the Bible. The Bible makes more sense once you realize how important Law is to Jews.

    I think the point about "The disciples stole the body" is kind of an interesting one to me. Because I can (and did) experience this as a kid myself. If you're told that this person died, was buried in a tomb, and then three days later some caretakers showed up to find the tomb empty... kind of your first innate reaction is: "Someone took the body". Graverobbing wasn't uncommon in history. Maybe someone was afraid of desecration (Such as Abraham Lincoln's body, it was cracked open an insane number of times over claims that someone might have desecrated it)? This is just kind of a logical assumption you make when you hear "And the tomb was empty". Because someone moving a body? That happens. Gravekeepers trying to resell space. Thieves. Delusional and obsessive people. Etc. "It got up and walked out/was brought to another plane of existence" is... not the first assumption most people would make.
    So back when I was a kid hearing about this for the first time, yes, that was my initial thought: "Someone stole the body". Only to have it hammered in "No no no, that wasn't it!". So it makes sense a gospel would try to go that route once they started adding in the "Empty Tomb" narrative. Preemptively address the likely objections. It's something you do in debates for example. If I can bring up my opponent's point, I can preemptively dismiss them from the audience's mind before they get a chance to example it.

      Grave robbing was indeed extremely common.
      For example, Apuleius's The Golden Ass (2nd century) is a tale of wonders, marvels and supernatural happenings including the main character being turned into a donkey. With that said, it does mention several habits and cultural customs of its day.
      At one point, it mentions how in Thrace, grave robbery was so common- for the purposes of stealing the actual body or body parts to use for magic- that families would hire guards to watch over the bodies of relatives before entombment. This is not the only reference to this either, it was apparently an actual thing.
      I do not know if this practice was that common in Palestine but odds are variations of it, at least, did exist.

      There's honestly the weirdness in the gospels of why are people going to open the tomb a couple days later.
      In Matthew (but only Matthew),the tomb is guarded. In John, Nicodemus already applied like 100 pounds of spices to Jesus's corpse. So why bother opening the tomb back up unless there's some unmentioned plan to move the body in the near future or something. If he's going to stay in the tomb, why bother adding spices at that point?

    *As usual Paul, brilliantly argued!* 😊👍
    I personally find "Inspiring Philosophy's" attempt to cast aspersions on those who don't necessarily accept that Jesus was buried in Joseph of Arimathea's tomb as "choosing a hill to die on" as utterly _ridiculous._
    Firstly, his co-religionists Licona and Habermas disagree with him on the empty tomb.
    Secondly, and more importantly, it's not my job to _disprove_ the resurrection, it's his job to _prove_ it.
    If he choses to "die on the hill" of an empty tomb that then supposedly establishes that the resurrection is certain, then he also must accept that he needs to establish the burial in Joseph's tomb as certain too. Not a mere possibility, but a virtual _certainty._
    _And he hasn't even come close._
    At best the burial in Joseph's tomb is an unlikely possibility, rather a certainty.
    The hill _he's_ chosen to die on is, at best, an unlikely possibility.

      In no other context would an empty tomb lead anyone to conclude the person had resurrected. Special pleading is the only "argument" for this being the one case in which that's what happened.
      I agree, the "empty tomb" is a terrible hill to die on and it is the kind of thing that may seem really appealing if you already believe in the claim that Jesus came back from the dead but to anyone else, it's immensely unconvincing.

    Short highlights why the empty tomb story and surrounding details are probably works of fiction.
    1. Most likely there would have been designated graves already prepared for crucifixion victims. The ludicrous scenario that Joseph was somehow in the position of scrambling on Passover for an available burial plot and the only option was to use his own family tomb, is historically implausible and violates practical sense. If crucifixion was a routine occurrence and burial was of the utmost importance then obviously this would have already been thought of and trench graves for crucifixion victims would have been ready to go. The Mishnah even states there were designated graves for criminals so, most likely, Jesus would have ended up in one of these graves since (if the story is true) he was convicted by the Sanhedrin of being a criminal blasphemer. Since Jesus had been "hung on a pole" then he would have been "cursed" (Deut. 21:23). It is unlikely that Joseph would defile his family tomb with the corpse of a cursed criminal blasphemer. Josephus says blasphemers should be buried "dishonorably and secretly."
    2. There is an obvious reliance on the Old Testament for the Jesus stories beginning with Jesus' entry into Jerusalem (based on Zechariah), the trial and crucifixion (Psalms). What are the chances that they modeled the burial after Isa. 53:8-9 and have Jesus buried in a rich man's tomb? Gosh, we find exactly that don't we!?
    3. Joseph, a rich man, would most likely not have personally taken part in burying Jesus. This grotesque task would have been someone else's job.
    4. In Mark it says Joseph "bought" linen. Buying and selling items on a festival day was illegal - Exodus 12:16, Leviticus 23:6-7, Nehemiah 10:31. Notice how the other evangelists omit the part where Joseph "bought" linen.
    5. The verb for the "rolling" stone apokulio was used to refer to round disc like objects. The archaeologist Amos Kloner found that rolling stone doors in the time of Jesus were ultra rare, reserved for the mega rich (kings and queens). However, after the year 70 CE, rolling stone doors became much more common so we have a likely anachronism here. It is unlikely that the word apokulio was used to refer to a square blocking stone.
    6. The reason for going to the tomb in Mark's story was "to anoint the body." The problem with this is that there would be no reason to go anoint an already dead and buried body so it seems like a contrived plot device created in order for the women to "discover" Jesus' body went missing. Matthew alters the reason to "go see the tomb." John has Jesus correctly anointed *before* burial.
    7. The question the women have in Mark _"Who will roll the stone away?"_ makes them look quite silly. Why would they head to the tomb without thinking of this in the first place? Makes very little sense as history but serves to create tension in the narrative which is released when they reach the tomb and find the door already rolled away.
    8. The remark that the women are invited by the angel to "see where he was laid" (Mk. 16:6) sounds mundane at first but realize previously at 15:47 we are told specifically that _"they saw where he was laid."_ The redundancy sounds very suspicious as if it's been artificially set up. The author is informing the readers that the women see where he was laid *so they cannot be mistaken* that this was the place where Jesus was and is no longer there. See Adela Yarbro Collins' _Mark: A Commentary_ on this.
    9. The description of the tomb and burial evolves more honorable over time as if they're either trying to cover up a dishonorable burial or make it seem like it *really was* empty or both. In Mark it's just a rock hewn tomb. In Matthew it's Joseph's own "new" tomb. In Luke it's a tomb where "no one had ever been laid." In John it's now a "garden tomb" and the burial is accompanied by 75 lbs of myrrh and aloes!
    10. The description of Joseph also evolves. In Mark he is a "distinguished member of the council." Matthew omits this and instead calls him a "disciple" of Jesus. Luke says he was a "good and upright man who did not consent to the Sanhedrin's plan and action." John says he was a "secret disciple for fear of the Jews." In the gospel of Peter he's even called a friend of Pilate! His character is so fluid and the evolution of his character is so apparent that we are justified in questioning whether this figure has any basis in historical fact at all. If the story can evolve this much from 70-100 CE then how much did it evolve from 30-70 CE?
    11. The location of gJohn's "garden tomb" seems to contradict it being Joseph's "own" tomb as in the synoptics. In gJohn the location was chosen out of haste due to the Sabbath fast approaching. It's unlikely the historical Joseph owned a tomb nearby the gruesome site of crucifixion. In gJohn Mary asks the gardener for the body as if it didn't belong there due to being someone else's property. So it seems we have contradictory locations of where Jesus was buried.
    12. There isn't really any independent attestation of the empty tomb since all gospels follow the same burial sequence and discovery from Mark - burial by Joseph, discovery by women, missing body. We know for a fact that Matthew and Luke copied Mark, thus they're not independent and John was written so late that it becomes extremely unlikely that he hadn't ever heard the Markan narrative.
    13. Lastly, the original story in Mark just has Jesus' body miraculously disappear without an appearance report since the original ends at 16:8. This is consistent with other "missing body" stories from antiquity that are employed to signal "this person was special" or that "a miracle has occurred." There were other stories of Jewish prophets and Greco-Roman gods/heroes whose bodies go missing so the Jesus story is just par for the course really. In Dale Allison's new book he even concedes this is the most "formidable" objection to the empty tomb.
    For more reasons see Matti Myllykoski, _'What Happened to the Body of Jesus?'_ in the book Fair Play.

      Very well done.
      You should look into the origins of the fictional Abrahamic god as well.
      *Although the biblical narratives depict Yahweh as the sole creator god, lord of the universe, and god of the Israelites especially, initially he seems to have been Canaanite in origin and subordinate to the supreme god El.* Canaanite inscriptions mention a lesser god Yahweh and even the biblical Book of Deuteronomy stipulates that *“the Most High, El,* gave to the nations their inheritance” and that “Yahweh's portion is his people, Jacob and his allotted heritage” (32:8-9). A passage like this reflects the early beliefs of the Canaanites and Israelites in polytheism or, more accurately, henotheism (the belief in many gods with a focus on a single supreme deity). *The claim that Israel always only acknowledged one god is a later belief cast back on the early days of Israel's development in Canaan.*
      *It is generally accepted in the modern day, however, that Yahweh originated in southern Canaan as a lesser god in the Canaanite pantheon* and the Shasu, as nomads, most likely acquired their worship of him during their time in the Levant.
      *Yahweh in the Canaanite Pantheon*
      The biblical narrative, however, is not as straightforward as it may seem as it also includes reference to the Canaanite god El whose name is directly referenced in `Israel' (He Who Struggles with God or He Who Perseveres with God). *El was the chief deity of the Canaanite pantheon and the god who, according to the Bible, gave Yahweh authority over the Israelites:*
      When the *Most High [El]* gave to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of men, he fixed the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the Sons of God. For Yahweh's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage. (Deuteronomy 32:8-9, Masoretic Text).
      The Canaanites, like all ancient civilizations, worshipped many gods but chief among them was the sky-god El. *In this passage from Deuteronomy, El gives each of the gods authority over a segment of the people of earth and Yahweh is assigned to the Israelites who, in time, will make him their supreme and only deity; but it is clear he existed beforehand as a lesser Canaanite god.*
      Yahweh, according to Amzallag, was transformed from one god among many to the supreme deity by the Israelites in the Iron Age (c.1200-930 BCE) when iron replaced bronze and the copper smelters, whose craft was seen as a kind of transformative magic, lost their unique status. *In this new age, the Israelites in Canaan sought to distance themselves from their neighbors in order to consolidate political and military strength and so elevated Yahweh above El as the supreme being and claimed him as their own.* His association with the forge, and with imagery of fire, smoke, and smiting, worked as well in describing a god of storms and war and so Yahweh's character changed from a deity of transformation to one of conquest.
      *As the Israelites developed their community in Canaan, they sought to distance themselves from their neighbors and, as noted, elevated Yahweh above the traditional Canaanite supreme deity El.* They did not, however, embrace monotheism at this time. The Israelites remained a henotheistic people through the time of the Judges, which predates the rise of the monarchy, and throughout the time of the Kingdom of Israel (c.1080-c. 722).

    The whole POINT of crucifixion was to humiliate a person by 1) subjecting them to agonizing torture, 2) treat their body with the utmost contempt by allowing it to rot in public and be eaten by animals, and 3) deprive them of a dignified burial. This is typical of a brutal regime like that of the Roman Empire. In a society in which death was ever present in the form of famine, disease, war, and accident, in which few people lived past 40, threatening death was merely a traffic-ticket level punishment. Real punishment was to humiliate and degrade people in their death. This attitude continued in most societies until modern times --- for example, medieval Christians considered being "denied Christian burial" to be a dishonour more humiliating than death, and people convicted of witchcraft were buried unmarked beneath a crossroad to damn them -- the idea being that they would have no proper grave and that their remains would be casually trod upon by as many people as possible. In the Roman Empire, being thrown into an unmarked grave was not just a common, but an integral part of the punishment.

    • @Nocturnalux
      @Nocturnalux 2 роки тому +7

      Remnants of this kind of thinking survived well into the modern era, here and there. For example, the Catholic Church refusal to bury suicides on "hallowed ground". And as late as the 19th century, in my very Catholic country of Portugal, there was a peasant riot in the Northern and more conservative region over the authorities finally transitioning to burials in graveyards as opposed to burials inside the church building as had been routinely done for centuries on end. The peasants were furious because in their mind, a graveyard was not consecrated ground and thus all burials there represented a grave offence.

    • @KaiHenningsen
      @KaiHenningsen 2 роки тому +1

      Most of this is correct, except the "past 40" part. This arises out of confusion about how average life spans are calculated. Those go over _all_ people, everyone who is born. Given how many children died in the very first years, once you pass that limit, your average lifespan rapidly rises.

    • @bertrandrussell7138

      @@KaiHenningsen As a historian, I'm quite aware of the childhood death factor in calculating average life spans. I'm also well aware that this "correction" has been grossly and uncritically over-used by secondary sources and popular history books. It does not help that often studies have focused on "ideal" samples from specialized contexts ---- e.g. age studies taken in graveyards in which only relatively secure and prosperous groups are represented. Yes, in the Roman Empire, in respectable urban graveyards serving the equivalent of the "comfortable middle class" who were regularly fed by the state with food produced by slaves on the latifundia, and the recipients of vast resources taken from conquered territories, you get average lifespans that are not bad for pre-industrial societies. These are not even remotely typical conditions. On the very few occasions when we've been able to study the skeletons of slaves (not the relatively well-off domestic ones, but the far more numerous water carriers and hard-labour slaves owned by consortia) we find average lifespans of 30-35. The average survival time of slaves in the mines was about a year --- and millions of people were rapidly terminated in these death-pits. We simply have no reliable information for the overwhelming majority of humanity, which was scattered in the countryside, but we have plenty of parallel examples of similar peasant populations in more modern times. The chances of the average person, even after passing through the childhood mortality filter, managing to dodge famines, wars, plagues, and accidents in a lifetime of physically dangerous work were very poor. Those who did get past forty were not only lucky, but they knew they were lucky, and we have plenty of records of them saying so.

    • @philpaine3068
      @philpaine3068 2 роки тому +2

      @@Nocturnalux Most interesting. In England, the distinction was between the "churchyard" as hallowed ground and elsewhere as unhallowed. In many English country villages, one still has to walk through a yard full of old graves to reach the Church door, and the "lychgate" [literally "corpse gate"] marks the boundary between hallowed and unhallowed ground. In Canada, this was apparently never the practice, and separate graveyards were maintained from the earliest settlements. However, in Toronto only Anglicans and Catholics were permitted such burial, and other denominations had to find a spot outside of the city limits. Jews had to go as far as Montreal to find a graveyard. A giant cemetery, open to all, was built in 1876, and it was expressly intended to put an end to the sectarian snobbery and squabbles that had plagued the city. Today it has 168,000 residents (if that's the appropriate word). But down the street from my apartment there is the old Necropolis, which is filled with the graves of many historical figures of early Upper Canada.... mostly with Scottish names. Too many, alas, were buried young, swept away by cholora and typhoid fever. Even in the city, it could be a hard life. In the country frontier settlements it was harder. In one community of early Gaelic-speaking Highland Scottish settlers that I studied, a quarter of the settlement was wiped out by malaria in the first year.

No amount of good works or righteousness (which as an atheist you have no bases for) will save you. It is by the grace of God, through faith, that we are saved. Great job, Paul. And it's been my experience - admittedly, more limited than yours - that Christians nearly _always_ want to argue against a position I don't hold. Even after I tell them my position, they'd rather pretend that I hold some _other_ position, apparently because they think they'll have an easier job arguing against that one.
    I don't have your patience. So it's a good thing - for that and many other reasons, too - that _you're_ the one making the videos. :)

      Read the text, idiots. The text explains what happened to the body, why legs were broken, why legs weren't broken, why the bodies were removed by sunset.
      But no, you don't believe the text, so you would be contaminated to actually read it and find out why your supposed gotchas are utterly lame.
      You don't have to believe the text; you don't have to disbelieve. But if you're going to criticize it, at least read it.
      Under Jewish law hanged bodies had to brought down before the sabbath which begins at sunset. To kill the thieves before sunset their legs were broken so they would suffocate. Asking stupid questions answered in the text is stupid.
      What would be a smart question is what do records say about Romans honoring Jewish law? They honored some Jewish laws. Any record they honored Jewish laws on executions in Judea with all the Jews watching? I don't know, but unlike you this isn't the hill I want to die on.

    Here is the problem with an argument from silence: there is no reason to expect that any of the relevant authorities would have looked at the tiny cult of one apocalyptic preacher (numbering in only the few thousands, and scattered across large parts of the Roman Empire) and thought that they needed to address any of the claims of the cult in the first century. The Jewish leaders of Jerusalem certainly had bigger problems by the time that the gospels were being written, what with the destruction of Jerusalem and such. The fact that the tiny cult eventually grew into a dominant religion could not have been foretold in the first century, so the silence is expected.

    I have a very simple response to most aplogetics, "Sure that's possible, but is it PLAUSIBLE." so many Christian arguments boil down to, "If we can have a possible explanation, then it proves the skeptic wrong." regardless of how plausible it is.
    AKA is it possible that you can line up all the gossples that contradict each other up, sure or is it more plausible that they were individuals writing the gospels that never intended for them to be read side by side and can't really be put together.

    • @JohnSmith-fz1ih
      @JohnSmith-fz1ih 2 роки тому

      You are right to question and ask for evidence.
      Something I see a lot though is, in the mind of the theist, claims of miracles don’t need to be plausible. They’ve already accepted that there exists a being that is all-powerful. It can literally do anything it wants. So to a theist it’s not a problem if something is incredibly unlikely. By definition, the being they already believe in can do incredibly unlikely things at will. They have no qualms at all with implausible things being done.
      I find it can be useful to name this up and question why they believe an all-powerful being exists. “If an all-powerful God exists then obviously He can resurrect dead humans if he wants to. I’m interested in why you came to believe an all-powerful God does exist though. I assume it was compelling evidence that led you to this belief so I’m interested in knowing what that evidence is.” This is likely to be much harder for the theist to justify because an implausible reason won’t do here. It would be irrational to believe in an all-powerful God for unlikely/implausible reasons so if they want to be seen as having a rational belief then they need to give a good reason in response to this question. Which is something you and I both know they cannot do, because there is no evidence that justifies belief in al all-powerful being.
