i will put out 5g and all the phone companies do you really think the g o v will allow that
What do you have to say?
as a lvl 3 tower climber that has build these systems for a long time.. this shit can't be safe.. The amount of direct power our phones would need to shit out to TX to the satellite is not the sort of thing you want up against your head all the time.. buckle up and enjoy your cataracts at the very least, and then there's the fear that in an effort to give this feature to more phones they will inevitably cut corners and just make it always on and at higher than ideal power levels to artificially inflate the idea that it works better than it does, so your burning RF into your pocket beside your reproductive organs all day. We will see a spike in people with eye damage in the coming 20 years, and then those people will exhibit higher than usual cancer rates.. mark those words now, and start adding shielding in your homes attic..
That takes some balls brother. I had a friend that did that sort of thing. He said being Infront of the microwave dishes for 10 minutes his insides would start burning. He died at a very early age 43.@@TrueHelpTV
As a starlink user all the way in Jamaica, im very happy about this development
If AT&T doesn't come on board soon, this is the one thing that can get me to change to T-mobile. This is very cool tech and I love that Starlink is pushing the envelope on what can be done with these phones.
Keep on keepin' on, man!
If AT&T did not have direct fiber to the home they would be back in the stoneage banging rocks together, less government contracts.🤣
This will take some time before it is even available.
Att is 🤡in America owned. Elon/Military won’t allow that.
Tmobil is better than AT&T anyways .
I guess you guys haven't heard about t-mobile terms of service, monitoring & fining your free speech. Been with t-mobile like 8yrs because only service available at my house, but will find a different carrier.
As for living in a rural area area our service no matter what provider we go with we might get one bar. The cell towers are located along the interstates to provide service to the cities. It's like, the hell with the country folks....
As a person cruising around the Pacific side of Mexico full time where cellular coverage is very limited, I think this is a tremendous improvement for providing another communication source in the event of an emergency. Of course providing voice and data use would be even better. Direct to satellite communication via my cell phone would be a much better solution than my archaic and buggy IridiumGo! and the limited functionality of my InReach Mini 2.
Absolutely. Perfect use case.
I have starlink maritime on my boat, a inmarsat sat phone and garmin inreach.
Maybe all this just on a mobile phone would be amazing. My 350.00 a month service fee sucks.
@@evinwhiteson4902sounds like you get a heck of a deal for $350 (all things considered). You are in the middle of the ocean. What’s the alternative? Don’t complain
Agreed how about a portable small clean global unit not linked to a person or location
Put it in your backpack put it in your yacht in a intercontinental trip put it in your or a friend's plane for island hopping or to a remote camp. Put it on your van camper work truck for a film
Put it at your base camp for an adventure or docu. Power it by battery packs solar wind kinetic water or wall or 12v
110 220 also piezo electric charging by movement for a little extra kick
Thsts what I want
Om the go for endless options and variety of use scenarios
@@evinwhiteson4902think star link does link to your phone but insure about that working senario is it a hot spot you connect to and disable network and cellular or not even have a sim or e sim. Cuz that would be cool
Thanks!
Steven. That’s so very kind. Truly appreciate your support! Many blessings to you and your family.. Happy New Year.
I am a cross country truck, driver, and through the years. I have tested many different companies and honestly Verizon has the most coverage. Definitely not the cheapest, but they always had the most. I was hoping Elon was going to come out with his phone and I was going to get one to try, yes I have been an apple guy for years but honestly I imagine Elon has a better thought process on the future of technology than Apple, so I was still looking forward to his phone. Also I don’t want to run many different phones honestly, if there could be one phone that did it all, maybe I have to switch to T-Mobile I don’t know only time will tell I do have Starlink at the house, and I also have one in the Philippines
How does star link work in the Philippines? And what part I'm in the mountains region of Paracelis poblacion.
@@wreckum56 it works fantastic because honestly all you do is point it to the open sky. The property that my wife has is in a small providence so nobody else has Wi-Fi at all except for us now there the only reason we have cell phones signal is because of a booster previous two but because of the Starlink, she is now using Wi-Fi calling and when I’m in the United States because she still has a Philippines, phone number, and I have a United States phone number we use WhatsApp
vinniegillotti9347.
I'm in Australia and Telstra is our best coverage provider. Some of the others are not much better than smoke signals. A while ago when I heard that EM was bringing out his own phone and sat provider, I couldn't wait to get one. Now I'm just hanging back to see what happens.
I can't see our Telstra (which is more expensive than all the others, because it IS the best) not getting some sort of deal from EM and then screwing us some more.
Here in Brazil we have a lot of deadzones on roads and starlink DTC would be a solution, we have a lot of celltowers with links provided by satellite (even starling) on rural areas, but still dead zones.
I don’t expect anything over 3G speeds, but just enough to maybe keep a map working and allow to do a emergency call would be enough
Thanks! Garmin GLO 2 GPS and GLONASS Receiver for Precise Position Information on Mobile Devices, Black. Excellent device.
My father had a satellite phone in the 1980s.
Yep. I remember. $1000+
My friend was in St Barts during 2023 New Years Eve and was traveling on a Yacht thru all the islands while Live Streaming on a Starlink for 2 weeks straight. He managed to stream with no problems at all and constantly had a high bitrate. That gave me enough confidence to believe Starlink is the real deal and we should be grateful that Elon is responsible for this and making it easy for people in remote areas to have good reliable internet
Seems currently now starlink is kinda locked to the region you get it for... sure thr mini can work somewhere else but it does say for not more than 2 months ...
What If your a perpetual global nomad like me and you don't want iridium imarsat
Wish there was just global free roam cellular and blockingn404 killer
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support and kindness.. Truly appreciate it as it helps out more than you know!!
Many blessings and Happy New Year!
Field researcher that uses starlink here. It's amazing service and I might have to consider switching my phone service as well.
Getting excited I've been following Starlink satellites connection good I'm with Tmobel can't wait..
Just because the signal is coming from a satellite, it doesn't mean it is a lot of power. Its simply a directional beam antenna pointed down, hence the cones of coverage. Don't need a lot of power to talk from the ground to satellite. The high gain antenna allows the same devices to be used, and compensates for the distance between them. The cell phones don't need to send max power to use them either.
I used your video yesterday to purchase service from a starlink roam system in NC. Thank you for your expertise with starlink, going up in 2 weeks from Florida
Great to hear! Glad to help!!
This sounds like great news!! I moved from Comcast’s/Xfinity internet services to Starlink Satellite Internet and we are MUCH MORE Happier with the speed of service and virtually no buffering at all (once I had moved the dish to its permanent spot on the roof). Even though the speed test say they are slower than what I was receiving via Comcast cable internet I can assure you the user end experience is much faster. I did also add my own modem so I can choose what kinds of internet usage gets priority and believe this helps a lot. I use an ASUS GT-AX11000 PRO and it has many great features for those that have a little more advanced knowledge of computers but don’t let that intimidate you as there are so many useful videos online like many of yours @JCristina!! Keep up the great work!
I have T-Mobile and I’ve traveled to 13 countries in 11 US states this year. My cell phone worked everywhere except Tennessee. I’m planning on moving there so the service might be useful to me.
I worked for AST Space building the bluebird sattelite constellation. They were building 5G sattelites that work with sprint I believe. Don't quote me. I worked on the solar panel and array deployment assembly. I was responsible for mixing adhesives and figuring out what would and wouldn't work. I knew starlink would quickly outpace them.
You mean AT&T. Sprint doesn't exist anymore.
This is a great innovation specially to a place where super typhoons are very common.
In my country, cell towers usually take a few months to be fully operational again after a massive hit by super typhoon.
Life is boring without internet while waiting for the service provider to repair the cell towers..😅
One of the things I like best about joining friends at their West Virginia cabin for quarterly retreats is that NO ONE CAN REACH ME. So I am not distracted by good or bad news, decisions to make or anything to penetrate the serenity of this brief escape. I am Elon's biggest fan. But this will intrude upon our respite. Such is "progress".
Great news! Go Starlink!!!
🚀🚀
I purchased the iPhone 14 Pro with satellite communications so adding phone calls and video calls would be great and then add internet access and it’s a full service package to help humans create more to help others. 😊❤
😂😂😂 iphone fan boy 👦. The satellite feature on the iPhone will drain your phones battery in minutes.
This is a major reason I switched from AT&T to Tmobile
There you go.
Since I spend a lot of time in the backwoods this would be a major addition to the tools you have for assistance or communication with others. Radios are great but have limitations.
Elon has really accomplished some amazing feats.
Could happen sooner if the regulators would get out of Elon’s way - hopefully more consumers will stand behind him and support him vicariously at the ballot box.
As long as he doesn’t sponsor the criminal trumpet in elections..he will have everything required🇺🇸
Bureaucracy + Deep pockets won’t allow it
Just need to be careful and not allow things to just be rushed through without consideration.
Regulation exists for a reason. You should read up on things like spectrum management. It's easy to do a drive by saying fooey on regulations when you don't have a grasp on what they are and why they're there in the first place.
@@yamahagrand I couldn’t agree with you more. However, who regulates the regulators that are applying inappropriate political bias that is contrary to the common good? When those biases are demonstrated in adversely impact advancements something has to give. I totally agree that some of the regulations are certainly worthy and beneficial - not against them by any means but again, there has to be a “happy middle” that is fair and doesn’t adversely impact advancements.
Direct to cell is fantastic. I’m beginning to feel like I ended up in a Star Trek movie. I’m sure glad I am not in a position of trying to compete with Elon Musk.
This'll be especially useful for those on long cruise ship journies. Soon cruise lines will be able to partner with Starlink and T-Mobile to provide a revolutionary experience in terms of cell sevice and high speed insternet on cruise ships.
Living in New Mexico in the Rocky Mountains means LOTS of very dead spots. This would provide me with a simple and easy way in case of emergencies while camping and hiking. Thanks for the update. Can't wait until it's available for general public.
As a regular traveling grandma that travels through the mountains (camps there too) to see family...this would be awesome! I have T-Mobile .
Wow I didn't knew that about Entel in Chile 😮 greetings from Chile and using Starlink 😌
🚀🚀🚀🚀
Going to be great.such a great deal. Whenever I want from wherever. Love it!
Down on river or up on mtn.
Crazy.. right!
It is possible to use the GPS of a cell phone when not connected to a cellular network. However, you must preload a separate app and maps. The cell signal is only used to speed up GPS acquisition through the SUPL network.
Pretty cool service! First I've heard of it and I am a tech guy.
JC love the way you are on top Starlink and enjoy your shows but please remember that your cell phones have GPS built into them and will still give you navigation with no cellular connectivity. Even in the wilds of Florida.
Yes. Sorry. I was referring to Google maps and alike that if do not have a signal no longer provide direction.
You do have to download offline maps e.g. OsmAnd
@@jcristina For something over 5 years now, if you have asked Google Maps to route you someplace with no cell service, it will ASK YOU if you want to download maps for the dead area. Or you can manually select an area, at any time, and cache the map data. So Google Maps can and will provide navigation without cell service--if you have asked it to.
Other mapping apps are plentiful, that also cache maps, even very large maps, to allow GPS navigation, not just location finding, on Androids.
In the middle of the Atlantic ocean on my sailboat heading N to Bermuda there is no cell service to get GPS coordinates from cell tower triangulation or router triangulation. No problem. My Apple watch and iPhone can be setup to bypass triangulation and talk to the GPS satellites directly. You just have to set up your watch to do a GPS “cold start” downloading the ephemeris GPS data and constellation data ( approximately 30 GPS birds up there) to your watch initially taking bout’ 4 or 5 minutes. Your done watch GPS data comes directly from the birds in real time. I do it all the time.
Being able to use the same network in every country you go to will make travelling cheaper and easier than it is at the moment.
that is not what this is and it wont be that for a long time
Can anyone say *_STAR TREK COMMUNICATOR???_*
The BIG question that I have is, *_HOW MUCH WILL IT COST???_*
Remember this, *_IT WILL BE EXTENDING YOUR ELECTRONIC LEASH TO EVERYPLACE THAT YOU GO!!!_*
This would be good for making an SOS of MAYDAY MAYDAY call if you have an injury or mishap in an empty wild area. Walking on the hills or becoming disorientated in woodland areas. Be good for small boat sailors on the coast and oceans. Mapping would be good too with your location and exit routes.
Your phone doesn't lose GPS connectivity just because it loses cellular connectivity. It just loses data for map downloading and if you had already downloaded the map you wouldn't have that problem
If you have ever seen a 3D map of Starlink satellites, this news sounds huge. This is something from old school sci-fi universe.
Agree!
For those who are not on metrics...550Km is about 341.75 miles.
Here in Big Sur ATT wants to discontinue copper service on the coast... We have so many visitors and emergency prolblems that StarLink would be a life saver....
AT&T with AST SpaceMobile will also be launching D2C service in 2024
@@Ben-fe1ft When SpaceX has hundred of satellites (with DTC) up there, you'll better of with Starlink system (game changer).
as I live the high desert of n/w NM we have many canyons with non existing service & with many hundreds of people working in the oil & gas industry it can be vert dangerous to be out there. I know as I spent a couple decades in it myself. @ 1 point I had the idea of building a network of tethered blimp based antenna areas to allow for service in these type of areas. it could be cheaper in the short term at least. Allowing for the fact that air traffic could avoid hitting the blimps & tethering cables.
I love it, especially for those in rural and undeveloped areas around the world. It'll be a giant leap for those folks who want connectivity like many of us already have, such as my 40 to 120 mbps landline internet. Will I change to satellite Internet any time soon? Probably not, since it will likely be more expensive. But, for many, it'll be a God Send.
I think its a mistake to make new satellites more invisible. Think about it, every time someone posts online "What is that in the ski just after sunset", it causes a natural advertising for StarLink.
This channel is perfect in 2x
I could imagine such a service working outdoors and then indoors with Wi-Fi.
Thanks for this information I appreciate you taking this time to provide it
Sounds amazing! For us internet is not a luxury its a necessity,as out 4 year old daughter us autistic, and when out and about , specilay near beaches etc,the internet is virtually non existence. With out it she gets very stressed . Last time.e this happend we had a 6hr meltdown she got that stressed :( so this is really good news. Can't wait :D
In Australia we have most of the country that "isn't" covered with any mobile service. I have many blank spots just driving to the city some 2 1/2 hours away (let alone around here locally!) I also often travel remotely & have been looking for something that is not only cost effective but reliable (something my HF isn't!!!) let alone the Starlink internet on the go!! WoW! That's definitely NOT cheap!!😥
Motorola was going to do this in the '80s. But they stayed analog when cell phones came out.At that time they had 85% of all mobile phone business. They could of owned the world!
Yep. The IBM building I use to work at in Boca Raton Florida had a massive Motorola plant. Gone! In the 90’s I believe.
JC , We have the smaller dish but used Starmount to install on our Bimini on our boat. Would be great to be able to plug modem directly into our 12v system. Suggest the offer a patch cord to convert. Great show, Chris
I forgot to mention that I love your tech vids! Thanks for doing this......
Using a standard phone to establish a signal at the satellite's altitude is impossible. Three decades ago, we utilized the 450 MHz band in mobile phones, as it proved optimal for covering extensive distances, particularly with widely spaced antennas. Moreover, achieving longer distances demanded a considerable wattage, accompanied by high radiation levels from the phones. I'm curious about the wattage required for data communication to satellites. Contemporary satellite phones feature substantial antennas, and it's worth noting that Starlink satellites orbit at a similar altitude to Leo satellites.
Very Cool. Elon is a hero 💖💖💖
Very exited about data. Considered Dat phone but will gladly sign up for this. Need for property!
Grilled was the right word, they will grill the whole earth, and you can't escape.
Great Video, thanks for your hard work and expertise ! Very exciting news !
When you say, “GPS connectivity”, are you referring to maps?
As a cellphone GPS chip engineer, I can tell you with absolute certainty that the phone listens directly to the GPS (actually it’s GNSS) satellites and computes the position, velocity, and time of the phone with or without access to a cellular network. Without a cellular network connection, the initial availability of GNSS may be delayed by 1 to 2 minutes.
The maps are a different story. While they could be kept resident on the phone, they are not. I’m not sure how much space it would take for your state, for instance, but you would also have to download map updates at some frequency.
Has any information been put out that tells us how much this will cost on a monthly basis? Will customers with Starlink service be given priority? Thanks for the videos.
@16:51 Smartphones are equipped with a GPS receiver that can receive signals from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) and have always been able to leverage raw/direct GPS signals without assistance (A-GPS) from local providers.
I hope this is coming to Australia soon,
I carry a Zoleo in the wilderness right now, to use my phone and data would be a dream come true !
Assuming your existing phone can work on PCS (not all phones physically can use those bands and channels) then the phone will still need to have Starlink added as a roaming service provider. That will probably need to be done manually, as cellular providers stop providing OTA upgrades generally after two years.
And there will probably have to be an OS or app upgrade, to tell the phone to use--and pay-- for Starlink roaming.
Not quite automatic coverage. Although 2025 phones may have it built in, and an incentive to upgrade phones.
My thoughts are that I had better buy a Faraday bag for my phone!!!! 😆
The problem I see is can a current cellphone transmit a signal far enough to connect with a satellite or are we all going to have to get new ones such as Tesla's new starlink phones?
It can communicate. No upgrade needed.
Elon being a major player in EVs, solar power, battery storage, Neuralink, SpaceX and Twitter as well as being one of the richest people in the world, he can pretty much control the world. Especially if he'll now have access to everyone who signs up to this. Yes, it can help people out, but it can be used nefariously too.
Garmin InReach devices won't be needed anymore, thats a huge deal. I wonder if an Apple Watch will be able to use the starlink sat network in addition to the phone. Because if thats the case, I see many people feeling quite comfortable going on nature hikes with their IPhone and Apple Watch, knowing that they have 2 devices which serve as navigation, communication and SOS capability.
One question. I understand that a big satellite has enough power to reach your phone. But how can my phone reach a sat which is 540 km away. A mobile phone has about 2 Watt i guess. I suppose this transmission power is not enough to reach 540 km????
A very long time coming, I had a globalstar 12 years ago.
17:30 We don’t need cellular networks for GPS 😅 All we need to have is maps stored locally on mobile phone. iOS 17.1 supports this feature.
After this flooding those maps would lead to dead ends in every direction. Still need live map updates.
But I do remember using those big atlas map books to plan trips. They are still very much needed.
@@amsturgill222 What "live maps" are you talking about? There is no such thing as far as I know. Or you are talking about road closures etc?
I still keep a proper ATLAS with me so I know where the heck I am. It's for the bigger roads, doesn't have every new development (subdivision) in it but man if the power goes down and I'm out in the middle of nowhere I can still get my ass home!
Facts!!
Absolutely fascinating
From radio frequency path loss prospectus the average cell phone is designed to send a signal a few miles. I dont see how it can connect 500 miles up without a directional ground antenna.
I will greatly benefit from this when I’m in the mountains in the Philippines…🤙🏼
Oh for sure.
So mini sat antenna for house and car truck here we go not bad!
How does a phone connect to the satellite? It uses too much power, since it is really far. How does this connection work?
Sounds cool as long as it’s not too pricey
FREE for current t-mobile customers according to representative I spoke with.
@@jcristina AT&T 🥲
I wonder if once it is up and running, rural folks can just aim their weboost antenna into the sky and have connection inside the home.
I guess you would need T-Mobile.
Sounds good sir hopin to hook on from Suva fiji islands
Cool!
🚀
Will that mean that our cell service plan will go up? I hope not. Mr. Joseph, I enjoyed your video and commented on the satellite in orbit, our internet service will more faster. Thanks have a nice n blessed day. Take care.
Thank you for this informative post!
Excellent! Think of the possibilities in disaster areas. Satellite phones are outdated and bulky. Military and civil first responders will be given the gift of communication and aid worldwide. Bring this onboard ASAP.
it can only serve a few people in 200 square mile area at one time its just for people who find themselves in a pickle with no normal service. But a starlink dish could already do what you are talking about and aid disaster areas in staying connected.
You wouldn’t be able to access service from indoors I would imagine. So you would need either to couple it with cell service, or starlink indoors
Correcr
@@jcristina do you believe it will be partnered with cell service? Or with starlink home internet service only? I know they’re partnered with T-Mobile for trials, but I wonder if that will become the norm
I'm here in the Arizona desert where I have had no TMobile service. After watching your video I turned of the wifi (Starlink) and got a 4g four bar signal and made a phone call to my wife on her Verizon with not problems. I don't know if this was a fluke or are the satellites starting to work. Thanks
So will the phones have to transmit at a higher power output reducing battery life when communicating with a satellite.
What do I think? Hurry it up!
Adderral.
I live in a mountainous rural area and have no cell service on my road, so it would be nice to have a cell connection once again, especially for emergency use. I lose my power and landline phone several times a year from falling trees. It would be nice to have radio & TV reception too, but that doesn't seem as likely. The bottom line will be the additional cost.
I have a Iridium Satellite phone and ham radio/license for grid down situations. Had these for over a decade and only needed them twice.
@@ChatGPT1111 I was going to do a HAM but the friend I had that was really into the hobby died last year. I'm kind of hoping that the SpaceX system solves the problem. So far, I have only lost my landline twice in 4 years. I even have a vintage slimline type of phone made with a teak shell that doesn't require power so I can check the lines if the generators aren't available.
@@ChatGPT1111 Maybe SpaceX will solve these issues in the near future.
This sounds awesome, previously when I was using my cellphone GPS i lost signal and the cellphone GPS was worthless.
Will there be a service fee to use this service?
I'm excited. I'm in an area that has a LOT of dead zones for cell service. But as an old guy who is technologically challenged ... would this work in the house if I had an external cell antenna? Or is it only direct to phone?
Bit more to a proper GPS in am 18 wheeler vs software available to a phone... Route matters, the software on your phone doesnt know where trucks arent allowed, where the GPS us truckers do. Its not just connectivity.
Amazing news. Thanks.
So I wonder if 911 (or equivalent emergency numbers worldwide) will work the same way as terrestrial networks? That would mean you can call for help even if you're not a T-mobile customer, or don't even have a SIM card in the phone. That's definitely a great public service.
While your phone won't know the difference between ground and sat links but a human will. Cell towers are instant transmission while sats will have the lag that comes with distance that the signal has to travel. It won't be as bad as to GEOS located sats but it still will happen.
As for warnings about radiation, our portable/base unit sat phone had a warning label on the front of the antenna section warning not to stand in front of it when in use. The phone looked like a laptop with the number keys like a laptop and the antenna being the part where the screen would have been.
And on the Comm Car for the President there was a warning sign as soon as you got on the roof of it. There there was an output of 3kW of RF signal so it could cook you like a microwave.
Absolutely amazing tech! I wonder what they will do with pricing, if anything. Voice communications will be interesting. Will it always grab the satellite over a tower if you are outdoors? Will it be able to switch from tower to satellite to tower and vice versa with no detectable difference? If Musk's companies are in the game I have no doubt it will come to fruition, just not as fast as he or us would like. Great work and thank you for a great channel.
Good questions. Looking forward to seeing the answers, especially whether it will be affordable to the average user.
Ive had GPS on my phone for years. Im off grid often. No comm but it does locate
But what existing phones have the necessary radios to connect to the service?
Thank you so much for thjis info.
