    ANVIL CRUCIBLE: I just ran my first batch through the Anvil Crucible (coconut porter). I've been a home brewer for about 5 yrs and worked as an assistant brewer at a commercial brewery/taproom. When the gentlemen states this system mirrors commercial conical fermenters, he is correct. In the past, I had used a plastic carboy with great success. However, the ability to transfer to a keg and rotate the racking arm on the Anvil is a game changer (eg no racking siphon and guessing game). I didn't attempt a yeast harvest or dump and was pleasantly surprised the cone had more than enough room to hold the trub. I did buy a solid stopper to use during cold crashing. And, the stainless steel makes clean up a breeze. I'm looking to now purchase the oxygen free transfer kit. Do your homework for your own needs, but I don't think you will match the quality for the price.

      Happy to share and I have been learning more during fermentation and so far I've be extremely impressed. The stainless is such a good temperature conductor that it was 2 F below what the fermzilla (plastic) was at in the same location with the same brew and same yeast. Looking forward to the cleaning afterwards as from what I've seen it is crazy easy compared to even a plastic carboy.

      Hope temps are too cold in your neck of the woods. I just finished doing a fermentation which will be in a video but it runs about 2 degrees (in F, not C) compared to the plastic fermenters which I wasn't expecting as it is due to the conductivity of the SS for temps. I saw a video on cleaning after a fermentation and it looked crazy easy. Eventually all my fermenters will have some sort of large opening as I am starting to hate fermenters with openings I can't get my hands into for cleaning.

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  2 роки тому

      To be honest I was expecting quality but it is a bit more solid then I had originally expected which was impressive. It also runs about 2 degrees below a plastic fermenter as the SS is very temperature conductive.

I am researching equipment to move into AG brewing and have settled into picking up an Anvil Foundry in the near future. I love the set-up and versatility of the Anvil Crucible, thanks for the complete set-up of the system and other add ones available.

    • @BitterRealityBrewing

      Thank you very much and welcome back to a very enjoyable hobby. I will say if you are looking to get an Anvil before Xmas, get it soon as I expect to see a rush on them just before Xmas like the last few years. Also I was slowly moving from glass and plastic bottle carboys to open mouth carboys and pressure fermenters but am seriously thinking about 2 to 3 SS Anvil Conicals now as this thing has impressed me so far from the unboxing to the actual fermentation. It is a bit tall but I figured I could go to a DIY circulation chiller with or without actual glycol initially. The impressed part has been the quality, it runs about 2 F cooler (due to the SS conductivity of temperatures) compared to a plastic fermenter sitting right next to it, and I've seen a few people clean these after usage and it appears to clean up very easily compared to some other fermenters I use. Once I get into our house we are building I am debating about building a walk-in fermenter for a few reasons beyond having the space and figuring it would be cool for other experiments.

    I have the Anvil 7.5 gallon SS bucket fermenter but would consider the Anvil Crucible with the nice conical bottom for yeast collection. And my bucket fermenter with airlock fits nicely in my chest freezer where I can control the ambient temperature and lager if need be. No need for a cooling kit and constant mess with ice bath and condensation for 2 weeks. And no way this conical fermenter will fit in any chest freezer or mini fridge. I have the Anvil Crucible. I have been waiting to get the yeast harvesting adapter and the cooling system. Both have been sold out every time I look on the website. One thing I did was switch to a 3 peace. The Bubbler style always runs out of water on me. Also a trick with the legs line up the holes before you push The leg in the snaps going a lot easier than what was on short-circuit brewing. The whole system has been redone from my understanding

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  2 роки тому

      The harvesting kit is back in stock but sadly the cooling one isn't and you are probably like me and would prefer to combine to avoid wasting extra money on extra shipping to get them separately. If you see what I did a slow visual of the entire system around the 20 min mark when you get to the top you will see a 3 piece as I prefer them a great deal for ease of cleaning. This was the last few days of a Belgian Rye IPA fermentation going on when I took the photos and the thumbnail. I saw a photo that the pegs for the legs use to be two parts but the ones I got were one part each, so you are probably right on a few things being re-worked. I am dying to do a volume measurement as I totally forgot to check that.

      Thank you for the support. Almost 7 years brewing and this is my first which as I mentioned I didn't buy this one but now I'm thinking I might need a few with a poor mans chiller and eventually a real glycol setup down the road.

      I do regret not verifying that for everyone but will check as soon as my fermentation is 100% as I'm looking to move the brew soon and check that. Supposedly the entire system had been reworked before I got it, so there is a good chance it is already fixed.

      Thank you for the support and this was a concern for me too but I was able to get readings from the fermzilla at up to 20 feet away and from the SS Crucible at about 10 feet away so it did impact it but not a big deal as I usually get pretty close before taking readings.

      Very nice as I am still getting over how easy the SS is to clean compared to plastic or glass. I bet your cleaning days will be a lot easier plus I didn't realize how well this thing conducts temps as it seems to stay about 2 F below a plastic fermzilla sitting right next to it.

      @BitterRealityBrewing  2 роки тому +1

      If you decide to go that way I will tell you that during fermentation the Anvil Crucible ran 2 F degrees cooler than the All Rounder Plastic fermenter sitting side by side. I'll have those videos out over the next few weeks with the first part coming out tomorrow.

    Nice review of the Anvil Crucible...do you plan to passivate the fermenter and the new kettle? Very interested to see how you will control temps on this as well.

      Thank you for the support and yep. I cleaned both with PBW with 20 minute soaks and then cleaned out with StarSan after the fact which I also let sock for almost 20 minutes. Sadly the first fermentation which looks like it is about done as of today was at room temp. The Crucible actually ran about 2 F cooler compared to a plastic fermzilla sitting right next to it. So of course the fermentation took longer and I had to ramp the temp up 2 F to get it to hurry up as I was getting restless. Considering moving the brews to a keg for dry hopping but haven't decided.

      Maybe we will get lucky and someone can do a comparison side by side. I do know the Anvil is a bit lower in costs but I also know the Brewtech seem to have a wider range of offerings at this time.

    With something like the Anvil Crucible looks a lot more proffesionall then a bucket or glass carboy. Is it also easyer? My bucket taps leak constantly, not the seal but the part where you turn it to pour out the beer. Its annoying to the point to change over to something like this. 😝

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  2 роки тому +1

      Wow, Sorry to hear that as I've never had that issue but I also don't use bucket fermenters but I do have one big mouth bubbler that has the spigot on the bottom but I guess I've been very lucky.

    Anvil Crucible is nice but I don’t have a way to control temp in something that size.

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  2 роки тому

      I just did a test with it against a pressure fermentation of the same brew and it ran 2 F Degrees cooler compared to the plastic fermenter which was nice. I was doing a Belgian Rye IPA and it stayed at 72 F while the Fermzilla was at 74 F and room temp was 71 F the majority of the time. I did eventually wrap a heating pad to the Anvil Crucible just to warm it up a bit to get the fermentation completed a bit faster and push the yeast to do its clean up process. The SS is VERY conductive.

  • @SlimeAfterHours
    @SlimeAfterHours 2 роки тому +1

    Serious question here sir, wouldn't it make more sense to install the butterfly valve above the elbow? Otherwise, wouldn't most of your yeast get stuck in the elbow and have very little contact with the wort? I put mine together blindly and it seemed to make sense to me to install the flow regulator above the elbow. I haven't used mine yet, so I'm genuinely curious if there's a reason not to do this.

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  2 роки тому +1

      That is a great question and I like the idea behind it but there are two problems: One you would need the extended legs to avoid having the elbow almost rub the floor and the second reason would be that your average yeast cake aka trub would block your spigot creating issues. As for the yeast, the majority will do its work and the dead cells will fall to the bottom and out of the way. This will allow for enough room to capture the trub/old yeast without blocking the spigot (at least most of the time as we all know there are always exceptions).

    I need to buy an Anvil Crucible. Still watching the video, but how are you going to maintain your temperature for fermenting?

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for the support and for the first one I did a room temp to compare it to a plastic fermzilla right next to it. It ran at 72F while the fermzilla stayed at 74 F with a Ardennes Wyeast yeast which was underpitched intentionally. I'm either going to need to get the chiller add-on or see if they will sell me shorter legs 😂 to help it fit into my fementor as it is a bit too tight at the current height by almost 1".

    This may be a stupid question but I want to get one of these with the leg extensions so gravity can do its thing when kegging, but......how the hell can I get a 5 gallon bucket up that high to dump the wort in lmfao

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  8 місяців тому +1

      Looks like you need a table or ladder. Lately, to help verify my total wort, I've been pulling my wort with a one-gallon measuring pitcher. amzn.to/3MLfYfK I bought this thing just over 2 years ago, and I use it all the time, but originally, it was to help measure my exact water as I quickly realized that 1-gallon jugs of water usually contain a good percentage more based on where you buy them from. Which on a big batch can easily add up to another 3/4 of a gallon of extra water. I will say, keep it away from kids as if someone ran into it while it was full, it is a bit more top-heavy with the longer legs and could easily get knocked over. Plus, use a tiny bit of coconut or olive oil to put the leg extensions on as they are very tight fitting.

      Fully understand but you may want to check a video I have coming up doing a direct head to head comparison of the same beer being fermented under pressure and not under pressure. The experiment isn't even over and I've learned a lot already but the final brew will tell everything. I will give you some insight to the experiment that will be in the final video - First the SS Conical was exactly 2 F Degrees cooler compared to the plastic fermzilla pressure fermenter the entire time sitting side by side. Now of course 2 F warmer temps helped but the pressure fermenter actually fermented at a much faster rate to the point that 2 F degrees temperature couldn't be the only part at play in my opinion. So there is a pro and a con but I will have a lot more info in a future video as it is just finishing fermentation as I write this.
