Depends on the country and source. For example in China you can't drink tap water, in Spain it's not as bad, but should also be avoided, other than for showering and washing hands and in Germany you can drink tap water pretty much everywhere.

@@jacobvelasquez562 You should take a sample and do a lab test. There are odorless and tasteless substances which could cause damage. For example lead or arsenic in low, but already harmful, concentrations can't be detected without doing lab tests on the water. Actually those tests are rather basic and if you have access to certain glassware anyone could do those. The most important substances for analytic chemistry are sulphuric acid, sodium hydroxide, hydrocloric acid, potassium chloride and DI water, all which you can order without any certification or stuff like that.
Depending on the experiment you might need more stuff, but usually nothing too extreme. And some stuff needs to be deposed by specialized companies, especially organic solvents or in general some toxic solutions which are either requirements (especially some indicators) or results of the reactions.
At the end of the test sending it to a lab would be a better choice though. Also taste is not nessecarily a good indicator. For example water with a lot of iron tastes awful, but is completely harmless, while there are some odorless and tasteless toxins and especially pathogens.

Back then we used "mineral" water that we get from a nearby store that contains 5 Gallons of water so we get 10 and at this point I'm the only one who drinks them and my family uses tap water and I can actually taste the difference between the "mineral" water versus tap water.
We changed to "mineral" water cause sometimes the water is murky and looks weird especially when there is a storm but now it doesn't look weird.
