Wolf made the Grendel offering, but they are becoming hard to find. I wish that someone would make the Grendel and the 5.45x39 in cheap steel, Comblok varieties. My Ruger American Predator seems to like the steel cased Wolf. Ultra-Mega-MAGA
Very entertaining test TGD, I personally like the six.five round better than the 7.62x39. And to be honest I doubt a deer hit by either round would know the difference.😂😂
Great video. Glad the variables were as consistent as possible. A lot of these videos will have bias/favoritism and/or at least not be a fair comparison with one barrel being several inches longer than the other, or two different bullet constructions or something else. Woulda been cool to see a 16” 6.8 SPC with a 120 grain SST in there as well.
Thank you, I try to make things as fair as I can, sometimes it’s not possible to be as close as these two were, but I try to be close and point out any advantages in variables if there are any. 6.8 is a round I haven’t gotten into, I may have to cause I like the numbers it produces.
Nice! Both were devastating lol. I just ordered a 6.5 Grendel upper for pig hunting. This video was perfect timing. I like the extra penetration of the 6.5 but both would do the job. Awesome stuff as always my friend 👍🇺🇸
I can speak from experience, the 120g gold dot will full pass through both shoulders of a white tail with 6.5 Grendel. Be a good one to look at if you hand load
@@thegundungeon …. That’s awesome. I do load most of the calibers I own so this should be a fun one to work up some spicy loads to hunt with. I appreciate all the work you put in for us watching and responding to us. 👍🇺🇸
Deer hunted with the Grendel and x39 both. Grendel way outperformed. Grendel will do distance way better. The SST is a shallow round it blows up quickly and doesn’t penetrate that well.
The 6.5 Grendel had more power at any range and it gets even more prevalent at distance There’s anatomically no comparison, different constructed rounds function differently but it doesn’t change the fact that the 6.5 Grendel shouldn’t even be in the class with the 7.62x39. How is even a debate?
In the house of the woods Old 7.62x39 is hard to beet up to 150 yards But after that the 6.5 Grendel runs away with it I’m partial to the old Russian myself but do have a couple Grendel’s that come out to play in the winter time Great video
From the same barrel lengths, 7.62x39 has no ballistic advantage. A 10.5" Grendel will walk away from 7.62x39 by 100yds, and stay supersonic almost twice as far.
Great comparison. Just picked up a Ruger mini 30. Also have a 6.5 grendel. Going to use both for what i feel the need for. Keep that young fella participating in your videos!
Great video guys, you chose excellent pairings. I am a fan of both cartridges, and agree that the Grendel is better at distance. At close range, the 7.62 is going to make a bigger hole and dump its energy rapidly. I bet little man knows the difference between an AK and an AR. Bringing the young ones up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and that includes bullet launchers and propane accessories! A little Hank Hill, for those in the know. 🙌🏼
The biggest reason (in the past) to buy 7.62x39 was for either for an AK type platform, cheap Russian ammo, or both. Sans that, there is no reason to buy a new gun in 7.62x39 anymore, especially if you pay factory American ammo prices. Nice video.
X39 is surprisingly fun to play with on the reloading bench even with having to use the odd ball .310” bullets. Sst and Speer gold dots are good for deer, and I have some varmageddon bullets that are specifically for defense, catastrophic expansion
7.62 choices were plentiful in early 2021 and early 2022 at Outdoor Limited. So I moved on that . Lots of Barnaul soft points. At the same time I got a couple ar uppers. Unless Trump can get in and he lifts the Russian embargo, its bang for the buck package is stalled.
As a Lover of the 39 I have to admit the Grendel gets more trigger time on my bench It’s a very accurate caliber and it will kill anything I’ll ever shoot at in the Southern States Great video
I've always wondered, do you clean these and make chicken salad out of them? It ain't like it wouldn't be the same as shootin a live one. Except it's already defeathered
I'll still go with the Grendel as it's made for distances farther than ten yards or less, and for medium game, or for self-defense in which it does crazy damage. For extreme close quarters, there are 5.56/.223 rounds in the defensive 62 and 64 grain realm much better suited (e.g. silver-tip, not the military green tip).
It took the gold in this one. I’d be curious to see how they match up at 100-150 yards with the Grendel retaining more velocity at distance. Maybe a video soon to come
6.5 Grendel has around 500 more ft lbs of energy than the 7.62 At the muzzle 6.5 Grendel 1919 ft lbs energy at the muzzle and 7.62x39 1508 ft lbs at the muzzle. Them looks at the bc and all the rest they’re really no comparison whatsoever
At the muzzle? I’d have to see evidence of that, reloading data is the least biased of published information and the best loads I can find for each put both pushing a 123g bullet around the 2500 fps mark from a 20” barrel.
Don’t know what I love more. The quality of the video or seeing someone be a great role model for their kid. Awesome👍
Thank you so much, means a lot.
@@thegundungeon My pleasure boss. Thanks for raising little man right 👍
You are a very fortunate man having such a fine little buddy/assistant!! God bless both of you!
Thank you, he’s dads boy for sure lol
The reaction from the chickens were more dramtic with the 7.62x39. I think it dumped more energy into them. Thats why the 6.5 had more penetration.
Awesome that you are teaching your son about shooting. He’s going to have such great memories hanging out with his dad! God bless.
Thank you! He’s growing up too quick on me lol
Appreciate the demo. Both are dynamic performance. But I agree that at this range the 7.62x39 is more damaging in initial impact. Thank you.
I really like both rounds for sure.
Love both rounds and shoot both a ton.But the price of 6.5 is crazy right now.
Handloading is the only relief lol
You can literally buy it online for 80 cents a pop.

Yes the velocities are very similar. Around the 2400 mark
