    I flew rented M20J’s and M20K’s for hundreds of hours back in the late 1980s. Fast and efficient, I flew them as far as Montreal and New York. Early in my flying, it was my dream airplane to own though, as it turned out, I never did own one. Thanks for featuring it. As for landing, if you fly it fast, a Mooney will float seemingly forever.

  • @bigdaddie40
    @bigdaddie40 9 місяців тому +6

    It's amazing how most landings in the M20 are three pointers or nearly so. I try to hold it off as long as possible, but you'll never get to that Cessna touchdown attitude. With that said, I land close to three points at times. You think you're flaring the hell out of it and the nose touches down a microsecond after the mains. I love my M20K 231. We average 9-11 GPH and 160kts true at 65% power. Al Mooney had it figured out. Love your videos Rich.

    i had my Mooney for ten years and logged over 1000 hours. just fly the aircraft by the numbers and you will be fine. Not a hard aircraft to land, Just find a good Mooney flight instructor and you will be fine.

    That old push to talk button on the pilots yoke caused an instant flashback!! The 150’s that I learned to fly in back in the late 90’s all had those velcroed on push to talks. Those airplanes were OLD and BEAT UP but they sure were fun!

    Just try to be +3 kts on short final and bleed the energy off over the numbers and just hold it off, hold it, hold it and she'll settle nicely. Speed brakes on this one, aftermarket option for early birds pre 1994 I think.

    I was in a five-member flying club that originally had an M20C (short cabin, 180 hp). We then bought a new M20F with one Narco Navcom for $20,000. What a difference that extra cabin length made for back seat passengers. A great and economical traveling machine. As I recall, it would cruise at 172 mph TAS on 10 gph.

    Love Mooney’s, my Vintage M20E is very fun to fly! N9165V looks like it has the original Dukes landing gear actuator gearing with the AD. Also, the nose landing gear truss pivot bushings and steering bushing look like they may benefit from reaming and over sized replacements (LASAR has a kit). The steering horns are hard to find these days, but VARMA may help with that. Enjoy the airplane! If you are a vintage airplane owner I encourage you to pursue your A&P certificate. Maintenance costs on these special airplanes will negate the benefits of their inherent efficiency unless you can do more than the 12 things the FAA allows pilots to do. Labor is ~$200 hr and the number of A&Ps working in GA who have insurance, pay taxes, and know what they are doing is rapidly shrinking.

    My friend had that plane but must have been 1 or 2 years earlier with just 2 windows and a manual stick landing gear. What I remember the most was flying it was fast and constantly wanting to climb and required effort to hold the nose down.
    Seemed fast for a plane with it's tail on backwards.. :)

    With the recent Mooney crash in Florida is it true what they say that it’s common for Mooney’s baggage door to come off during flight or the door to open?

    • @FlyingNDriving
      @FlyingNDriving 5 місяців тому +1

      It can come off because it's not faired into the wind, but they only pop open if you forget to shut the door. And you only crash with the door open if you get distracted and get to slow

    Mooney started the year I was born. When I was young I was always drawn to the back angle of the rudder, I thought that was so cool. LOL They just look so well built, I love the wood-look panel in that one. With the performance, it's no wonder Daher bought the design, that turned into their Tarbes Mooney project, or TBM. Every time I see a TBM I see a Mooney in there. LOL --gary

    I really like the style of the interior with that white leather, and red instrument panel. It’s pretty snug so I think it would be a very nice airplane to wear, like a good pair of Italian shoes. I noticed what appeared to be speed brakes on the wings, but you did such a good job managing your energy on landing that you didn’t need to use them. The front looked like it had Lopresti speed mods for the air inlets, which look really cool ,too. Was that windscreen original or was that also an aerodynamic mod because it looked like it’s slope angle was a little steeper? Thanks for the cool video. Merry Christmas.
