  • The New Balance 880 v14 is the latest version of the Boston-based brand's no-frills everyday running shoe. It uses a basic EVA foam in the midsole, has a moderate 33mm stack and an inoffensive 8mm drop. Here are my thoughts on where it fits into the market in 2024 and how it performs out there on the run.

    Just picked up a pair of 880v14s and also found the toe box a bit narrower. Ended up loosening the lower portion of the laces while keeping up the upper tighter and it worked great for me! Appreciate the in depth review!

    I love the look of the new 880v14 especially in black/white. The previous models were too heavy and I’m glad they trimmed the v14 down

    Yup, I bought the 880 as my first pair of running shoes and I think that's their purpose, as once I was able to expand my workouts and bought the Triumph 20 and Rebel V3 (LOVE both of them), the 880 immediately became a walking / working shoe. They are too dead now to run, but if I had a fresh pair, it would probably be my traveling / vacation shoe. I also see a lot of senior park runners using them. They are kind of specialized in a roundabout way.

    I've enjoyed my pair so far after two runs. "No frills" is a great way to describe it - its refreshing to have some ground feel! I suspect the midsole will be more flexible after 30+ miles. It is listed at 8mm drop, but I felt like it was lower (in a good way) as the heel doesn't seem to interrupt my natural running mechanics. Just a decent cushioned no BS shoe which stands out in the world of high stack rocker shoes!

    Thank-you. 880v12 is my DT and I don't plan to buy this in 2024 but a curious as I might buy it in 2025. What's the motivation for the 880? You're going to get 500 miles out of it and you can pick it up for $70 after one year and $40-$45 after two years if they still have your size. I need 4E width and the Fielcell line only goes up to 2E. I have a much harder time finding the 1080 on deep discount in my size.

    I am not a runner at all. But instead I use runners for walking and everyday life. I tried the rebel v3 and i found that the heel was way to “thin”/unstable for day to day errands. 1080v12 was good but worth 210+tax Canadian? 880 felt the most “normal”. Nike peg is a legend, but honestly Nike are too slim and tight for me.

    I have this shoe, and it's ok. But it feels a lot thinner than it looks. I usually like those kind of shoes, but the 880v14 is just not fitting me well. Had to go up 0,5 a size to not have the toebumper hurt my toes, and I almost never go up 0,5 size.

      @MiracleWarriors 5 місяців тому

      I ended ordering the Asics Gel-Cumulus 26 instead of the 880 v14. But I might get the Rebel v4 to pair it with my 1080 v13. For the same price, I found that the Gel-Cumulus is lighter, more bounce , and stable ( with a soft middlesole) and more modern.
      Anyways, with new colors and price drop , I might finally try my first 880 later this year.

    Making me feel old with the Pegasus reference. I started running cross country in middle school, Fall of '82, in Nike running shoes (maybe the Cortez?). I can't remember if I ran in the Air Pegasus the following season ('83), but, the Pegasus was definitely my daily trainer in high school. Depending on the course, we either raced in the Waffle Racer (non spiked) or the track version with spikes.

    Not everyone likes the softness of the new 1080, so I think the 880 will cater those guys. I think it would be a good replacement for those who like the 1080v12 but in a slightly lower stack and a bit lighter weight. Less hype too! Which means easily discounted soon 😊.

    Nice review, thanks for that! I've been wearing NB 880s since version 9 or 10, usually switching off with Brooks Adrenaline, 4 x 10K runs weekly, just getting out there, nothing complicated. Both of these shoes have always been decent for straight-ahead no frills everyday runs. However, I'm disappointed in the latest NB 880v14 for some of the reasons you mention. Narrower toe box than previous models, which is strange for NB. Quite firm and rigid, which is different than most recent versions. Also more of a flared base on the front of these than past versions, giving them a wider footprint but in combination with that narrower toe box - weird, in my opinion. They also got rid of a set of eyelets in v14 or v13, which I don't like the feel of. Not sure, but seems like the 860, 880 and 1080 have all consolidated to same price point (eur 160 over here in Europe) where there used to be a price spread among them. Not sure I'd buy another pair of 880v14 due to that narrower toe box - after a few months on the road with these, I can feel it. Perhaps something changes for v15. Thanks again for your considered and detailed review!

      i wasn't blown away by the 880v14 so wouldn't recommend it. saucony ride 17 would be a good option for you - 8mm drop and uses a fun foam that's also super durable. i haven't run it yet but i ran in the saucony triumph which has the same foam and i absolutely loved that shoe. my only complaint about the triumph was the 10mm drop felt too high so the ride 17 with the 8mm drop should be in the sweet spot www.runningwarehouse.com/Saucony_Ride_17/descpage-S17RM01.html?from=supwell

    • @supwell
      @supwell  5 місяців тому +3

      the current version of the adizero SL competes with all those ones i pulled out but it's a lot firmer and less forgiving than any of those other options - i liked it as well but as you probably know it's not a crowd pleaser hahah adidas introduced the supernova rise as a more comfort-oriented daily and the price of that at $140 is on par with pegasus, 880, velocity nitro 3. in SL2 adidas is putting a lot more of the lightstrike pro foam, so it seems they are positioning the SL as their fast daily (similar to rebel) and supernova rise as their mainstream/comfortable daily

    I have 2 pairs of the 880 V12 and 2 pairs of the 880V13 and what sets them apart from this "new improved" 880V14 is that the previous 2 versions had a dual layer midsole foam of freshfoamX and fuel cell, so you got great toe off for faster runs. I know we're all hobby joggers here, but I just can't wrap my head around anyone wanting a shoe that is only a "6 of 10" in every category. Let's say you're running 25 miles a week. That's a pretty average parkrunner's weekly mileage. That's 100 miles a month and enough to wear out a part of daily trainers in 3-5 months (depending on how much life you can get out of them). Most of us watching shoetubers probably run a lot more than that. For anyone who is in hobby for longer than one pair of shoes last, there's a false economy in trying to have one pair of shoes that does it all.
    If you're going to wear through 2-3 pairs of shoes every year anyways, why not have a rotation where each shoe can be really good at it's job? You're not gonna be spending any more money, you're going to have better tools for the job, and there are other benefits of having a rotation (shoes last more miles if not run in everyday, lower injury risk, etc...) I get buying an "all-rounder" if you're trying to find out if you enjoy the hobby, but after that, it's time to build a rotation and leave this boring daily trainers on the shelf.

    • @supwell
      @supwell  5 місяців тому

      yeah i agree with this - if you're going to buy two shoes this immediately becomes obsolete hahaha but for the one shoe runner, shoes like this make sense. the example i keep thinking about is a high school cross country athlete who can only get one shoe at a time. this would be a great shoe for that. for any hobby jogger probably not 😂
