  • Few baits rival the fish-triggering appeal of a squarebill crankbait smashing into everything along its path. Wired2fish's Kyle Peterson shares some lure design nuances and gear tips that make squarebill cranking more productive when targeting bass relating to wood and rock.

    • ROD - 13 Fishing Envy Black 2 Casting Rod, 7'4" MH/Mod Fast: wired2.fish/13...
    • REEL - 13 Fishing Concept Boss, 8.1:1: wired2.fish/13...
    • LINE - Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon, 14-pound: wired2.fish/Su...
    1. Fish the bait with deliberate, moderate retrieve speed that crawls (worms) through, over, and into any available cover.
    2. Use a beefier rod with a moderate taper to assist in driving heavier gauge, premium hooks home. Kyle isn't scared to set the hook when bass are smashing squarebills. A medium-heaving crankbait rod and reel spooled with 14-pound fluorocarbon has the strength to penetrate multiple hooks while allowing you to take control of the fish around cover.
    3. Choose a crankbait with a distinct sound. In addition to vibration, sound can be a powerful trigger. For example, the 13 Fishing Jabber Jaw delivers an excellent metal-on metal clack reminiscent of the ChatterBait JackHammer.

🙋 okay, seeing this Epic and amazing bass right here just makes me want to go and fish for them, like seriously. The thing is I only fish for trout and that's it. But seeing this catch right here, makes me want to. Anyway Congratulations on a very nicely beautiful well caught fish. Also great job on bringing it in.

Love the tips, unfortunately my bodies of water are all grass filled.

You can fish a SQB plenty in grass. Just ride it along the top of submergred grass, or along grass edges. Rip it like a lipless when it gets hung in grass.

Then use a shallow diving sqaure bill. They have them where they go 0-1 ft and 0-3 ft. Also do braid to mono leader and keep your rod tip pointed up to help keep the bait higher in the water. Get used to feeling it when you start hitting the grass and before it completely bogs down stop and give it a quick yank to clear the grass. Rinse and repeat.
