We took all our animation team from the studio to the film yesterday afternoon. Our jaws were on the floor. The art direction. Motion, story and writing. Unbelievable
I wonder do people forget that Miyazaki is still making movies? He is the master.

I actually think the family drama is kinda important because it adds to the weight of the characters and their relationship
Exactly. And it shows that being Spider-Man is not only a tough gig as a super hero but as a normal person
Yeah Chris is kinda off base with that criticism. The plot is driven by Miles’ love of his mom…and especially his dad.
With such a pivotal plot point later in the movie being about his dad (no spoilers), it REALLY made sense as to why there was such a subtle focus on Miles’ parents through the movie.
We need more family interaction in movies.
@@Mexirican017 like that’s how the hero is so relatable to us! Plus it was soooo emotional with his parents I got teary eyed especially being from an immigrant household
I disagree with the thoughts about the family early on - those nuances and conversations were definitely needed in the story and immensely contributed to how Miles was going to be able to stand up for himself and write his own story.
Exactly, if that wasn't there reviewers would still nitpick on it by having payoff that doesn't feel deserved. Also the groundedness is the key to Spider-Man, if not this whole multiverse thing falls flat.
same, that scene when miles is talking to his mom on the roof and she says that nobody is gonna be able to take care of her little boy like her is perfect imo. also the crux of the movie falls apart without the family scenes
Yeah, if anything drags in the movie, I'd say it's the tail end. There's a lot of action scenes, which seem a bit repetitive, and you start to get the feeling, that the movie can't even finish its story in time. (And, it doesn't, since it ends in a cliffhanger.)
not everybody can be a hero or stand up for themseleves. miles has special powers.
@@DarioTheDude spiderman doesn't need groundedness
These spider verse movies are bringing animated films to another level and I love it
Not just Spiderverse movies.. Del Toro has been on a mission recently just preaching that “Animation is cinema” and David Fincher and TJ miller have one of the hardest shows on Netflix.. seems like it’s slowly getting it’s moment again.
While Disney the connoisseur of animated films is just remaking their old classics for quick cash. Shame.
They're great vehicles, but at the end of the day animated films have just been more engrossing and well developed compared to the live action superhero/sequel fatigue we're getting. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was amazing too.

I’m NGL I’ve never really agreed with the whole “It’s gotta be better than the first one” aspect.. if you hold a story by comparison to the first - feels like you’re ignoring a whole lot.. If it just tells a satisfying story and builds on what’s good - that’s enough for me.. I don’t really go in with expectations of “it’s gotta top the first or it’s a flop”
Miles and Gwen rubbing shoulders while upside down and looking at the inverted New York cityscape is a masterpiece of composition and writing. It should win some kind of prize.

That shot on a huge theatre screen was simply beautiful
I think this trilogy may have a big chance of being one of the greatest film trilogies of all time
Given the next one is being made back to back and should be the same quality, I’m pretty much ready to declare that it is one of the best trilogies ever. I really wasn’t worried about them messing this one up and now I’m feeling the same about the next
LOL
@@BishopWalters12 what’s funny
@@CRM-114 then what do you consider great film trilogies? Outside of a few, most have 1 meh or bad movie(Godfather, Alien, Raimi’s Spider-Man)

Seeing andrew and toby in projections of captain stacy and uncle ben dying was amazing to see just makes all of the spiderman live action movies tie together. 10/10 film
Really surprised no Tom showed up tho aside from a reference. Understand given the No on screen uncle Ben death or Captain Stacy death at all, but can’t help think they’re saving him for a slightly bigger role/cameo in the third one. That would be brilliant, they’re clearly not shying away of combining live action with animation either with the gamblino prowler and venom lady scenes
@@chriswyatt9869 i saw someone say that miguel didnt want to bring the live actions spidermans to the spider society because of what happened in no way home, migeul knew if he brought them 3 they would side with miles. But i do think Tom at least will appear in the next movie.
These are the kind of movies that bring people together. Not because they're about family or they're animated but because they push the limit of what movies can be and we are stuck in awe of how incredible everything is and we just want to live in this world like a favorite dream.
I am betting Spider-verse trilogy will be better than the dark knight trilogy
I think the family drama was needed. As I was watching the drama, you could see the strain keep increasing as well as the dread that something is going to happen to his dad. They are setting it up. They are highlighting it. In doing so, you can see just how hard Miles tries to not let his parents down and failing and how his parents know something is wrong but not sure how to approach it, putting strain on their relationship, but can see how much they mean to each other, not letting that tension break them apart. Knowing how much they love Miles, if something were to happen to his dad, you know that everything that happened before would truly hurt miles, because that strain was never resolved.
Idk, I'm so tired of the overused plot point where spiderman loses a loved one, its happened like 10 times now, including with Miles. The fact that the whole plot of the movie thats moving the character forward is surrounding Miles' father possibly dying is so frustrating and boring to me. Combine this with Miguel just being a really poorly developed character made this movie a pretty large disappointment, besides the visuals which were once again breathtaking.
Well said.
Maybe its overused, but this movie actually gives it a new spin by giving miles the knowledge that the tragedy happens, all spiderman faces loss, but what if they knew that loss was coming, they can stop it, but at a risk? Will they try to stop it or not? What choice makes you spiderman? At least that's what I got from it
@@jcola2296You completely missed the point of the movie. It's a canon event
@@jcola2296 But this is what Spiderman is. That one person with powers who severely struggles/hurts in their private life and tries to make the best of everything.
Is it overused when it's an integral part of their character? For me, that's like saying Batman being a bat-themed rich dude is overused aswell.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller have that magical touch and the perfect balance of heart, depth, and quirky humor. They seem to just be all around talented storytellers, and to see how far they’ve come from Clone High is pretty great.
They somehow made concept that felt like an underestimation at first with The Lego Movie and an animated Spider Man movie to a big huge incredible movie in execution. That's the testament how great of a talent they have
We should campaign for the miller lord solo cut. We need different genre styles in star wars.

As an animator myself, I have to say this movie is a master class in animation. Balancing so many styles consistently, balancing clean animation and chaotic action, all while still feeling like you can draw it. And not to mention literally every frame is a museum worthy art piece
As an actor (voice and live action), I can't say enough about how hard you guys work on animation side of things. Makes me want to do better even with the small part I get to play. Much respect.
Every frame!
I though animation was all over the place , with no consistency as in too much of it to the point it was off putting/ all over the place
I’m a hobbyist animator too. Whatever they did with this movie, particularly whenever Hobie is on screen. I want to eat it.
The execution of the sequence where Miles realizes that he is not in his universe and Gwen telling Mile’s parents that Miles loves them more than they could ever know was outstanding.
I loved that the writers focused on delivering a story that felt grounded in how being Spiderman puts a strain on family and relationships. That entire sequence where Miles is at his most vulnerable moment and is finally willing to be completely honest with his mom only for his mom to not be “his” mom was so tragic and compelling.
I actually loved how they ended the movie and you just know Beyond the Spiderverse is going to be extremely cathartic for Miles and the audience
'Coming out' to.his mom....and she's not the right one! I felt that!
This film was truly amazing. I haven’t felt this way about a movie in a really long time. Not since Lion king or toy story. 10/10, can’t wait to see it again.

These Spiderverse movies are really setting a standard for superhero movies and I love to see it. Long gone are the days when superhero movies had to be dark or edgy to be seen as masterpieces.

Seriously, most animated movies have been great eye candy, but these movies really respect the story just as much the visuals. Between this and Arcane, as animated movies go, I feel so grateful!
The cold opening with Spider-Gwen is just top notch. I LOVE how all the characters were written, EVEN THE VILLAINS! My favorite is probably Miguel O'Hara. He's a hero but I dug the hell out of how they made him the "villain" of the story. You totally understand all their character motivations here and it all just collides beautifully.
You said it so well. Miguel is not a villain, but the way his motives clash with those of Miles is just so well written imo. Both try to save what is dear to them and both are willing to go far to protect those they care about, as a "Spiderman" would. Can't wait for the big finale with all this tension, haha.
Not only have they captured lightning in a bottle twice with these two movies but the third one was being written alongside the second one as across and beyond were planned as a duo loft which means they will surely capture that lightning a 3rd time
Just saw this at the first screening in VMAX. The first movie has been my favourite since its release and as everyone knows, sequel movies are NEVER as good as the first. This here is an exception, it exceeded expectations and was so well-made. There is so much depth in this film, the story is fast faced and incredible, Miles character development is amazing. I remember watching the first Iron Man as a kid in the cinema and just buzzing over it.. This movie gave me that same feeling, you’re watching something truly special. No movie can ever be 10/10… This movie is 10/10 and is must watch!!!
Never wouldn’t be the right word. There are many sequels people argue being better than the first.

How was it? I did it with mine on Tuesday:)
Hayao Miyazaki once said "If you animate the ordinary, it will be extraordinary". What i love about this is that the animation during the "ordinary" scenes was not overly exaggerated but were well executed with character nuances that add to their character, unlike some disney or pixar features where i feel they stretch poses too far. Spiderverse really nails the feel of natural movements. And then when they animate action scenes i just bust 🤯
I went to the premiere. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen. If you think the last one was great. This one is even better. The story was great, acting was great, visuals were great. Totally blew my mind!

I agree 100%. I liked the original but wasn't blown away by it like some were but with this movie it immediately became one of my top 5 favorite comic movies of all time and maybe even my top fav 10 films in general. It blew my mind.
This is gonna be another blockbuster movie this summer season for not only fans of it’s franchise but going out to movies enjoying the summertime experiences. That movie looks so amazing since the first film. Well done, Marvel and Sony for making another best Spider-Man movie ever!
It was mediocre
Unless transformers or the flash beats it at the box office I don't believe transformers will but the flash is gonna definitely send spider verse to another dimension! The fact that these movies are still pushing limits is quite the accomplishment. A new standard for superhero movies is made with each of these films. I’m positive the 3rd film will definitely do the same
The family dynamics are arguably the best part of the whole film! It’s one of the core reasons the movie works as well as it does.
I cannot begin to explain how incredible this movie is. We are talking Terminator 2 levels of jump in quality from the original. An absolute game changer for the genre that we will see for years to come.
I think what i loved the most about this movie is the villain. They did such a good job with creating the villain and building him up
The cliffhanger ending is the one thing that prevents this movie from being perfect. Just as the story ramps up for its third act we get a big fat “to be continued”. Unfortunately, across the spider verse is an incomplete experience which will (rightfully) tick off some folks. In 2024, we can look back and say that this move is perfect on the condition that part 2 sticks the landing.
Very true, if they fail to live up to the expectations set here, I guarantee you this movie will not be remembered nearly as fondly as it is right now.
I actually really like the family drama stuff. It made his talk with his mom more beautiful and devastating
All of those moments definitely feel like they’re foreshadowing for something big in the next movie, especially those talks about growing up and letting go

Theres one specific scene between Gwen and her dad that is just jaw dropping. Like holy shit this and Puss in Boots has me so excited for the future, and even though its for something as minute as a movie, its a phrase I haven't said in a long time.

Love the way you speak about knowing how movies are made, and how that can dampen a lot of new movies.
I took an entry level 3D animation course a while back, and there comes a point very early on where enough of the proverbial dots present themselves that the whole process sort of clicks. You don't know exactly how to do it, but you can understand how they get from a simple grey cube to a photorealistic double of Tom Holland leaping over buildings. Y'know?
But watching these movies, and basically any animated movie that took inspiration from Into The Spider-Verse, those dots aren't there anymore. I'm looking at this movie, and I can't wrap my head around how they got from a grey cube to this movie. And that's so awesome to me. There's like an entire second experience I get to have with this movie where I'm not even paying attention to the story or the dialogue, and I'm just in awe of how the fuck they managed to make Gwen look like she's a 3D water colour painting in a world where everything else is made up of halftone dots.

This is one of the best experiences I’ve had at the movies in a very long time. I am simply blown away by every aspect, I can’t believe how stunning and amazing this movie is. I told my friend that it held the emotional weight and tones of a live action drama because that’s how good of a job they did on all fronts. I am inspired, I am in awe, and I cannot wait for the 3rd one!! (Please don’t make us wait another 5 years).
I liked that there were grounded familial drama that that make the cliff-hanger much more urgent and knowing the stakes, and it established the new theme of not letting others define you and all that come with the potential consequences involved. Also, it helps ground Miles character with, as you said it, more relatable scenarios. Having seen Across the Spiderverse, the previous felt like a the tip of the iceberg. By the end of the second, I feel like they've revealed their cards, but before watching Across, I thought I knew what I was getting into, but found so much more. I'm eagerly awaiting Beyond the Spiderverse to see where they take these characters and how things will get resolved or if at all. That not knowing is exciting, and I think that's what I found brilliant so far.

As a story teller, I can see twists and character beats from a mile away. But this, idk how they wrote EVERY character and relationship so well. It was so nostalgic yet refreshing how they tackled it all. I’m really keen to see how they wrap things up in the third and I’m super inspired to push what I thought I knew about writing.
Just the way you're describing this makes me emotional. Can’t wait for this one, the first one really was fantastic. Great to hear this spoiler free review from you.
When does Shelby Oaks hit theaters???
The first one to me felt like staring at a beautiful painting with all its shades & nuances, this one to me felt like going around an exhibit and being mesmerized by different pieces of art.
I’ve already bought my ticket for tomorrow. So excited for this one.
It would be SO EASY to just make these bombastic visual spectacles but they do inject so much heart and love for the characters. I'm sssooo anxious for the 3rd movie
Yeah. I’m glad it has an actual story rather than just fully focusing on the art direction as if it’s a “tech demo.” Looking at you Good Dinosaur
@@BallisticGhast6 I never doubted that there would be a good story but it's kinda like Terminator 2, after such a peak, it's so easy to just say "we'll feed then spectacle" and hope it works. They really seem to care about these characters and the story they wanna tell.
@@chrissullivan6572 Exactly, man. Glad these writers are passionate for these characters and all of the world building they’ve been doing since the first movie
Didn't look at the review yet but finally you came with the heat before Jeremy. You two are the best.
I did watch it tonight in my local theater. I trully love everything of this masterpiece. His animation is perfect, there's emotions, the stakes are high and full of surprises I wasn't expecting. It was perfection for me. The best Spiderman film ever made since Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2. But there was a lot of teenagers who booed the cliffhanger of the movie. It is the first time I've ever experience such a worst reaction from an audience. It was disturbing.
There's nothing more satisfying to hear than Across the Spider-verse living up to the extremely high expectations the 1st movie had set
Honestly loved the family drama at the beginning. It was great on its own and really enhanced the film as it went multiversal. As a part 1, definitely doesn't feel like too much for me.
This is why I will watch a review from Jeremy or you then go straight to the other guys channel, If you don't say it, he will If he misses it you,ll find and say it. The two of you are my personal movie reviewers. Thanks for what you do and keep up the great work brother.
I'm a person who watches movies with an eye for visuals above anything else, but the only competition this movie has is with itself. I genuinely cannot think of another film that looks this good (except the first spider-verse) and it instantly became my favorite film of all time. It may just be my favorite piece of media ever.
This movie is incredible. I’m so happy they topped the first film and I’m so excited to see what the third film brings!!
They also need to do this with X-Men. Just feel like X-Men is made to be animated to get full impact.
That would be super cool!
The X-mem animated show was underrated. They definitely could revive it and expand the storylines.
Great review, Chris.
I'll watch it in IMAX this weekend.
I think the animation over shadows the music just a bit, but man the music was also really damn good.
*Spider-Man: No Way Home is the best Spider-Man Sequel Ever!!!*
Across The Spider-Verse: Hold my goober...
omg just finished watching this.. truly one of the best comic films ever made just like the first one. I am very overwhelmed throughout watching the film.. It's visual madness with great depth😭 they definitely did it again with this one
Spoil for me idc, so miles and Gwen get together?? Lol
@@TimeWillTell651 nah😊
@@DrHg lol
@@DrHg bro did u watch the movie? If yes....was the Indian spiderman cool? Did he get enough screen time?...and did andrew appear
@@dhyanesh87 for me I think spiderman india is O.K, and yes there is a scene from TASM showing andrew 🔥
Chris!
I’m a huge fan and have been watching your videos since as far back as 2016. I wanted to ask, what made you stop doing letter grades for movies?
Much love and I’m SO ready for Shelby Oaks!
This movie is a masterpiece of epic proportion. Every single frame blew my mind. I felt the same, Chris. At 43 very little feels "new" anymore. This did. Speaking on the family drama - I felt it was important, and made the latter parts of the film hit that much harder. Who are you, when there are multiple versions of you across the universe? How are you set apart? Those themes drove this. And it was DARK! Especially the last hour - gut wrenchingly so, but I get what you meant by saying MAYBE they could've cut the family stuff down by a few minutes. Even still, 10/10 for me - instant classic. The animation is one thing, but the storytelling here and the threads woven from the first movie through is beyond incredible - the weight of it. Like you said, real people going through real things. This might be my very favorite superhero film of all-time - which is no small task. Can't wait to see it again. Just absolutely spellbinding on all fronts. Great no-spoiler review, as always, brother! Thank you!
Can't wait to see how Miles matures both as Spiderman in this film and the upcoming game Spiderman 2.
The fact that Chris didn't review The Little Mermaid is telling...
👀👀
I was so hyped the whole time that I didn't notice it's over. I'm very excited to see the next Beyond the Spider Verse.
Absolutely loved this movie. Loved hearing you articulate all the wonderful things about this movie (as always).
