Suggestion: once you've inked the map, scan it in to the computer. That way you can print it out and colour the printed version so you don't mess up the original. Then, if you make a mistake, you can just reprint the map and re-colour.

Tarakona Tohu is a small traditional fruit farm that has been tended by the Stanier family for nearly 390 years. The 122 acre orchard is set in the south eastern corner of the rolling Herefordshire countryside, near Ledbury, close to the Malvern Hills.

Thanks for the great content, that you are making. This hand-draw maps, get me back nice memories, when I was younger and tried to program a rpg games. Based on the gothic world, I have draw a lot of maps, plans, stories, characters. Never finished it, ended up in dreams, mostly because of over scope of those projects, but this video reminds me a lot.

I think it would be fun to name the town something to do with the name of the apples, If you've got a name for the apples already. If not I'd suggest something like Starbite Apples and then you could have some cool folklore surrounding the grove popping up after a fallen star crashed nearby and that being where the apples came from. Then you could call the town something like Starfaln or something. This was a fun little train of thought, I hope you get a kick out of reading this at the very least!
Edit: The star could have fallen in like the river and changed the water in the area and made the apples grow with a cool colouring and maybe some fun magic properties! Okay I need to stop I'm having far too much fun building this up and it's not even my Town!

Great video and great Intro! A name I have for the town could be: Drakenvoss. It roughly translates from Icelandic to mean Dragon's waterfall. Perhaps the town is near this massive waterfall from the mountains where the dragon keeps his true lair and hoard.

to come up with a town name randomly choose words from other languages and mix them together. the languages can either D&D based languages or real life languages. you can also chop up words and rearrange them to create new names.
assigning numbers to word, languages, and syllables, and rolling a dice is a great way to create something interesting and unique for an adventure

Muffins! The dragon wants muffins. When I was a kid there was a book called _The Muffin Dragon_, IIRC. The dragon initially extorted the baker for all the muffins. After the baker went broke, then the dragon worked out a deal where it provided heat for the ovens.
As an adult, it seemed like an underwear gnomes situation, but as a kid I loved it.

My people in this country are all tree-dwellers, they live up in the trees with platforms and bridges drawn in between. How would you translate a home-tree from a top-view? A tree with a spiralling staircase around the truck that leads into the platforms and the bridges?

Here's a list of words that gets me thinking about a riverside town that grows apples.
    Red, Scarlett, Crimson, Ruby, Vermillion
Ford, Stream, River, Bank, Crossing, Brook, Creek
    Orchard, Garden, Grove, Yard
    Apple, fruit
    Town, burg, ville, ton
Somehow I like Ruby Grove and Rubyford best followed by Crimson Creek. The Ruby names evoke the value of the apples for the townsfolk, it could also recall the color of the dragon or its fiery breath. With that said, I really like how Crimson Creek rolls off the tongue. Lastly, Applefort is also simple and evocative and many places where named as such.

A couple thoughts. You might try varying the size of tree outlines. It's hard to suggest different types of trees in this style, but using different sizes at least suggests variety (and makes things like orchards where all the trees are the same size stand out). Remember that where you draw shadows suggests the position of the sun. If the shadows are in the southeast, the sun is to the north and your town is going to be in the southern hemisphere, which may be important in world building.

This is an older video, but a few of these map videos, this one especially, inspired me recently to try it for my next game. I’m really struggling, not so much with the drawing of houses and trees, but with figuring out where to place them and factoring in like, hills. I just can’t seem to do hills and I don’t know how close a house can be to a river. So many things just look awkward due to placement alone ☹️ still having fun doing it.

I scan at 600 dpi (300 for color.) There are several ways of getting rid of the blue lines. I usually just adjust the levels (Image>Adjustments>Levles) in Photoshop. Try looking up "removing non-photo blue" for whatever program you use. Good luck!

    • @JPCoovert
      @JPCoovert  3 роки тому +1

That is tricky! In this case, I think the fort/castle is probably too small and the apple trees too big. I think it's really all about the relationship between stuff. So in the planning phase, figuring out how big trees are or any other sort of natural element can help you determine how big the buildings should be in relation.

Oh! Forgot to suggest a name! How about Dragons Delect? Or if the dragon has a name, ______’s Delect? I am a huge user of alliteration in my maps 🤣 So used for a dragon name generator, something like Delbarro’s Delect? Before the apples were brought up I was thinking Dragons Meet, which would be like a double meaning, the people there meet the dragon for disputes but it also means the townfolk are just meatbags to him 🤷🏼‍♂️

May I ask if these grey pens are special slow drying pens? Because I have the problem that with all the pens I could find i draw darker when I overlap the strokes. Did I do something wrong?

Yeah, alcohol markers can be tricky like that. I recommend looking up some copic tutorial videos, they’ll be able to help more than I can!

Be cool if you would maybe make up an Amazon shop or with list that would have all the pens and such you use a lot of. Would be great to grab some of the things you use.

Great tutorial. These look like broadleaf woods. Can you show how to draw an evergreen forest? Cheers!

Try it out yourself! Test some different approaches on a scrap sheet of paper. Maybe try keeping the general shape round, but instead of little semi circles, the trees are made out of more angular lines?
