HUGE RESIN POUR - Massive SEA MONSTER Cthulhu Rises - Epoxy Resin Diorama Art

  • In this video, I 3d print a MASSIVE CTHULHU model and place it in an epoxy resin incased diorama. The story I tried to capture here was the Great Old One slowly emerging from the ocean floor and breaching the surface of the ocean near a lonely island with only a single lighthouse sitting on it, as a un-expecting ship was sailing by.
    This video was inspired from channels like: Boylei Hobby Time, Thalasso Hobbyer, Uncle Jessy, Neardforge, Miniac Painting, TheDMsCraft, Mini Bricks, Real Terrain Hobbies, Geek Gaming Scenics, and Eric's Hobby Workshop. Hats off to those amazing creators.

    I wanted to mention something I found really neat but is such a minor detail on the project.
    The fact that, during the collaboration piece of Paint to Life discussing the Cthulhu Mythos, he never receives less than 50% of the screen I found to be a really great thing. So often, collaborations give the other person such a bit part, but giving PtL the majority of the screen time during his segment shows a level of respect for the collaboration that I really appreciate, even as someone who never heard of his channel prior. I just wanted to acknowledge it, because I do really appreciate that level of respect for the creator and his time.

      Thank you. I wanted to give him the whole screen haha, but I thought people might want to see me printing/painting the model in this video too. Paint to Life is a great channel, so nice to throw it on and listen to his wonderful stories as he paints miniatures. I recommend everyone check it out. I really am trying to do shout outs in my videos or on my Community Tab to other channels out there, my goal is to help prop up others as I grow as well. It is nice to hear that is apricated by viewers as well.

    I think that build came out amazing, a true nail biter for someone with Thalassophobia! (the fear of the ocean or other large, deep bodies of water). Believe it or not, I think the ultimate size worked out in it's favour, not to mention the opacity of the water is just cloudy enough to play with the mind!
    Thanks for inviting me to narrate a little extra of the Great Old One himself!
    Cheers!

    So much to appreciate and praise in this. I'll start with the video: You have a real talent for making long-videos feel like they're short. You make the modeling look easy through your editing process, while at the same time giving full instruction to a novice like myself. I could do this after watching you (I'm not saying I'd do it as well, but I could tackle such a project). There are countless modelers on YT and you are the only one I subscribe to (at all) and watch every single episode. The videos themselves are relaxing, informative & instructional, as well as being very authentic (nice to see your son sneak in!). Notice I haven't even mentioned the build yet?!? The build was beautiful. I myself loved the opacity of the blue and thought it was perfect. The tips for the spackle (let it dry and then work with it a little more) and for the falling water off the model, oh yeah, and let's not forget making waves with modge-podge and an empty airbrush! Genius! I have a diorama for lizardmen that I wanted to do for the longest time, and now I think I have enough confidence to get in there and try it in all its watery goodness! No doubt this is your finest production to date! Well done!

    • @FacilityD20
      @FacilityD20  2 роки тому +1

      Wow.... thank you for the kind words. It is very motivating to hear that today. People don't get to see the behind the scenes stuff in terms of editing and making a video, this video had over 200 clips and took about 15 hours to edit after a month to make. Trying to put it all together in an entertaining and informative way, while still trying to stay true to myself is hard to do. Taking pictures and making title and thumbnails takes hours to. So when you say you enjoyed the video, along with the actual project, means a lot to me. Thank you.

      With this particular type, it can only do an 1" or so at a time because it gets really hot when it dries and the deeper the resin the hotel it gets and when it cures it will cause it to warp and become malformed.

    Having the water be a little cloudy makes sense since if Cthulhu is just now bursting out of the see floor, he's going to be kicking up a considerable amount of silt...
    I do feel sorry for the poor souls on that ship however, according to the Mythos, just getting close to the Old Ones causes Insanity in humans...the more powerful the Old One, the greater the effect and Cthulhu is supposed to be the most powerful of the Great Old Ones still on Earth so everyone on that ship is now incurably Insane (assuming the shock to their mind didn't kill them outright) and soon to be fish food since Cthulhu is likely going to sink the ship as he continues to thrash about as he finishes emerging from the see floor...

    You could have just left the caulk base coat and gone directly to the painting without the Mod Podge coat...
    Epoxy Resin doesn't care about caulking at all...what you do need to be careful with is water and Depth of Pour...
    Epoxy Resin absolutely HATES water with an Unholy Passion and the pour will crack like crazy during curing...pouring it too thick can also cause cracking because the Resin heats up during curing and if theirs too much Resin, it gets too hot and undergoes an Exothermic Reaction which also results in cracks...
    There are 2 ways to prevent an Exothermic Reaction...1) don't pour too much volume at one time and 2) use fans to cool the Resin as it cures, the fans can dissipate some of the heat and prevent it from reaching the Exothermic point allowing you to pour a little thicker than you really should, but be careful as it's a very delicate line between a good cure and an Exothermic cure...
    If you really need to pour a lot of Resin at one time, there are Resins out there designed for that, they are formulated to generate less heat during the curing process allowing much more volume to be poured at one time, the trade off is both they're more expensive and they take MUCH longer then most slow set Resins to cure - most slow set Resins cure in a day or so but deep pour Resins tend to take 3-4 days to fully cure...

    • @FacilityD20
      @FacilityD20  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the tips on the resin. I will be doing another resin build soon and I will be going with a deep pour product. I am going to set a fan on it as you suggested as well, good idea.

    • @HappilyHomicidalHooligan
      @HappilyHomicidalHooligan 2 роки тому

      @@FacilityD20 Something else you might want to do is when you're building the mould, mask off the edges of the sheets where you're going to glue them to the base and/or each other with tape and spray mould release on the part of the acrylic that will touch the Resin. That should make de-moulding it MUCH easier since the release spray will help keep the Resin from sticking to the Acrylic sheets...
