    Yay soapnuts. I've been using them a lot for washing up lately. I boil them in about a liter of water for about 15 min., then take them off the hob and let them sit for about an hour or sometimes longer to cool down completely, the longer the darker the water gets. Then I strain it and store it in glass jars in the frige, ready to use. You can dry the nuts and reuse them a few times.

    • @kate.arnell
      @kate.arnell  8 років тому

      I think I need to try them again as they didn't work so well as a dish soap. Great to hear they've worked so well for you!

    Would you do a video about where you source your meat and dairy from? I see that you choose organic and sustainable options and I’d love to learn more. I am actually vegan myself, but would like to know the options out there for my friends and family who are not vegan but are making movements to becoming more sustainable. I know it may be a controversial topic, but it could be so informative. Thank you so much! I am a new subscriber and think you’re doing amazing things 😊

    Just a tip: using that kettle on your gas hob must use up quite a bit of energy so maybe if you got an induction hob (to save you hassle and money you can get a portable one from ikea) you could save quite a bit of energy and money in the long run

    On the garlic: If you keep them in dark, cold, and possible ventillated place, they won't change in a year. Best place would be a "spájz" or in german, a "Speisekammer".

    Such a lovely video Kate! I too, am the proud owner of a miniature, non-pinterestable, zero-waste kitchen. Glass jars and stainless steel and wood are everywhere. have you made soap nut liquid with the soap nuts? you can was your dishes in it - it suds up nicely (much better than dr bronners which you really can't wash dishes in). i have a shaker (jar with holes in the metal lid) with bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) in it to shake onto greasy pans for a light abrasive scrub in conjunction with the soap nut liquid.

    • @lauren8627
      @lauren8627 8 років тому

      also i really want to get my hands on horse chestnuts (conkers) because apparently they work like soap nuts. i have yet to find a tree where i live in Australia but i know they are around. unfortunately the soap nut tree is banned from Australia so i can never grow my own.

    You kitchen is #goals. Been wanting to try and brew kombucha for years but thought England is too cold for it to work properly. Have you seen the documentary Cowspiracy? It's on Netflix. As you seem to be into eco living I think it's definitely worth a watch x

    • @kate.arnell
      @kate.arnell  7 років тому +21

      Kombucha brews well in the UK! I have seen Cowspiracy. Honestly, I didn't think it showed true-organic and have since read the facts given aren't accurate. At the point where he drove away with the duck I realised it was more of a pro-vegan documentary than an environmental one. Plant based diets don't suit everyone and are not the only answer in my opinion. I def think we need to move away from industrial farming however and promote organic and biodiverse farming methods more. Thanks for you comment! I really enjoyed watching Cooked on Netflix!

    oooo I did I hear you say worm bin 👀 I have been considering getting one as we only have a small garden and we don't compost anything at the moment! Up here in Nottingham there is a lady/wormologist that transforms a regular size waste bin to a worm bin for about £100 - what do you reckon? I have never heard another soul mention a worm bin, so excited to hear your thoughts!! 👏🏻🌺🏡 Xxx

    • @kate.arnell
      @kate.arnell  8 років тому +1

      Oh I love my worm bins. I have a small balcony so managed to fit a couple of small worm caddies on there. I still end up throwing away some food scraps but they have definitely helped to reduce the amount I throw away. I bought 100 worms from the organic gardening catalogue and they arrive in straw in an envelope. I simply added them to a pile of torn up brown paper with a few tiny pieces of food scraps to get them settled. After a week or two I added some soil I had from a pot plant and some more food and card from egg boxes. Now I have a lot more than I started out with! Good luck if you decide to get some worms in your life! They make a brief appearance in my Christmas video.

      I've taken up low-alcohol beer and enjoying a few sips of wine. Finally growing up....

      ECO BOOST lol, I'm super impressed by the fact you didn't drink - especially given the (I imagine!)glam party circuit in London and tv work! Thanks for the kitchen tour.. This time you've inspired me to clean my fridge!! Hee hee

      ECO BOOST ha, well don't ever change - you've inspired me not just to be greener but to work out what's really important to me and live to my own values - including doing things because I want to rather than following the crowd. Thank you.. Now I'll stop cyber stalking you and go and get the tea on ;)
