  • The Bullet Journal Pocket is a welcome addition to the BuJo lineup. The vertical layout is really clever and I like how it matches the layout of the standard A5. Mentally it might take a little getting used to, but I see the intention behind the design. I also like how you could lay it flat and smuggle in the back of the standard A5 notebook. The cover has a bit of flex to it, not as much as a Field Notes, but not a rigid hard cover. Kinda like what Moleskine's soft covers are like. Paper has good weight and thickness to it, no bleeding with standard ink pens, like the Bullet Journal pen. I also used the Squire pen and the paper held up well.
Only nit to pick - missing the cover grids that I love so much on the Bullet Journal 2nd edition that tells me how many dots each direction, where the page half and third is, etc. I counted and there are 38 dots in each direction. I just like the visual prompts that are in the A5 notebook.
Overall, big fan of the Bullet Journal Pocket edition, I'll be filling it up this summer!

You forgot that pocket Bujo has smart grid. So to divide page to halfs and thirds you don’t need to count dots. It’s already marked for you. It visible in video around time 6:50.

It’s pretty, but pricey. I couldn’t tell if it lays flat when open. I think that would be an incentive for horizontal writing and price point. Think I’ll stick with my log&jotter and FN. the artwork is a tad more inspiring than minimalistic black and white. Thanks for the walkthrough Matt!

Pricey even as a 3 pack? I didn’t make that clear.

Looks like it *can* lay flat, but doesn't stay that way without a weight? Maybe this one was self-closing because it just came out of the package, but I don't see any pocket-sized notebook having the substance to keep itself open.

I Bullet Journal in the Field Notes size. I have a rotation going between Field Notes brand and Log & Jotter. My books last about a month and the variety of cover designs help it to always feel fresh.

I like it. The Field Notes designs are fantastic, I do really like that. Going to put stickers on the bujo for some flair.

@@MattRagland Speaking of stickers, where do you get the stickers that you have on your bujo? I love the "Get your head out of your apps" sticker.

Just got mine today. This may be a game changer for me. I struggle with messing up my A5 Bullet Journal, and even though it isn’t artistic like some I have seen, I do like to keep it neat with some simple creative layouts. I also like to include some more personal journaling at the end of my week and have worried about losing it when I am out. Now I can use the pocket edition for my rapid logging and notes and not worry about how messy it gets. I can transfer anything I put in my pocket edition to my A5 later.

In graduate school I used a Leuchtturmn 1917 for in class note taking with the book turned sideways so that I was writing notes on the equivalent of a5 paper. It worked really well for that application. I can see that it would work well here too.

Great review, Matt. This is my new Goldilocks size (A6) and just in time for the usual Spring lighten-up.

I'm definitely a fan of pocket size but I think writing horizontally would be a big adjustment for me. I currently use 3.5x5.5 size slim notebooks to plan in, and I especially enjoy choosing a different artsy cover every time. It's lovely having a fresh start every month or so.

I use a pocket size as a daily, usually a leuchtturm and i use it both horizontal and vertical so I may have to check it out. Thank you

I don’t think I really have a use for these at the price point. They’d probably only last me about two to three weeks at work. But I think I could use them for collections that take a month per page in my Bullet Journal. Like a vehicle log and a supplement record. The smaller size means that they could stay where they are needed.

I'd have to adjust to writing in it horizontally. Otherwise, its pocket size makes it convenient to take anywhere without weighing you down. Thanks for the review, Matt!

Fun fact: A5 is exactly half of A4 is exactly half of A3, etc. Also, the relationship between height and width of euro paper sizes is the square root of 2, roughly 1 :1.414

You can use any grid or plain A6 notebook that lays flat the exact same way and where the grid somehow reasonably aligns. I liked to use the A6 Jottbooks by Leuchtturm1917. Now I am using A6 ringbinders and for carry puposes I fold the A6 into A7 and stick them into my wallet. Because the A sizes always half or double one size up or down.
What is the ultimate bullet journal? Future log plus maybe monthly / weekly plus yesterdays page and todays page and maybe the pages you need in the coming days. Optionally trackers, notes & ideas. Maybe 10 to 15 pages. Why carry an archive? Why carry additional emtpy pages you don't need on the move? 🙂

I'm not sure. I like the idea of buklet journaling, but i suck at it. I forget to use it because I work outside for the railroad and I don't have time to write. I also don't carry it around to restaurants or wherever because I have no where to put it. This seems like a good idea, but all the notebooks that I try to carry in my back pocket gets destroyed from sitting and from sweating at work. I can't seem to find anything that works for me. It's so frustrating.

    • @MattRagland
      @MattRagland  Місяць тому +1

Pocket might be a good fit then, but maybe not in the back pocket? Whenever I get stuck in a rut with planning, I just go back to making lists. What do I want to do, need to do, reminders, etc.

Love the idea, the quality from what I see, and the size but I cannot justify the cost of the BUJO pocket edition. The Field Note fits my needs and most certainly my price range. Maybe that will change if the need changes.
